St. Helena reported a little snow. Well look at the rainfall totals for our area and where we go from here forward now that the rain is out of here. Well folk out cold again. New, police say excessive speed and wet roads led to a deadly accident in san jose. It happened around 12 30. Police say the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree. Two lanes were shut down while crews cleaned up the damage. Efforts are being made to provide supplies and shelter to as many Homeless People as possible. Four men in the south bay died from hypothermia during this weeks cold snap. Three of them were homeless. The office of Emergency Services provided 600 blanketses to the agency ehc life builders. Last night volunteers hit the streets passing out those blankets and other supplies to many of the bay areas homeless encampments. In this community where we have so much wealth, we had several people lose their lives because tfer too cold. That should not happen. Volunteers will continue passing out the blankets and supplies throughout the weekend. Ehc life builders will be bringing in additional beds at three of its shelters. 375 beds can be found at ehcs Santa Clara County shelters. Snow and some pockets in the bay area are proming caltrans to pull out the snowplows. Yesterday it had the flow plows and sand trucks out in the urban corridors which is unusual. Caltrans said its crews were patroling to make sure snow and ice dont stick on the roads. Pg e crews worked through the night to restore power it to hundreds of bay area can customers. The biggest outage was in oakland, more than 1100 people were forced to deal with the cold without power. A power outage in san anselmo left more than 600 homes and businesses in the dark. Power has been restored for nearly all of the customers. Power is restored for 3600 homes and businesss in benicia. Pg e says the power outage was reported thursday night just as temperatures were dropping to their lowest levels. Pg e says an underground cable is to blame for the power outage. Just after 7 30 last night a 12inch wide main burst sending water gushing into a half dozen homes near seven hills road and santa maria avenue. Water three to four feet deep flooded living rooms, garages and yards. 20 people were forced out of their homes. We were just in our living room and just heard this rushing and thought it was pouring rain or something was happening. We looked out here and the water was rushing. We came out pretty quickly. It just was nonstop for probably a halfhour. That water main break also created a sinkhole. Were following developing news. Merrill newman, the 85yearold palo alto man who was detained in north korea for six weeks, is right now on a plane headed to sfo. He will land in a couple of hours. Its sure to be a warm welcome for the korean war veteran who has been away from his wife, family and friends for more than a month now. We have video of Merrill Newman in china last night on his way home. The ordeal started when Merrill Newman visited north korea in october. Just as he was about to board a flight for china, he was detained on october 26 and charged with hostile acts against the state. The Associated Press says Merrill Newman served in a it Top Secret Military unit that trained South Koreans to sneak into north korea during the war. During his time in custody in north korea, they released a video of the veteran apologizing for his actions. The north korean government does have a history of coercesing statements from detainees. We may learn more about the circumstances surrounding the statement as he returns to u. S. Soil. He spoke with reporters briefly in china. Im very glad to be on my way home. One woman is dead, another hurt, after a shooting at a hiphop concert in vallejo last night. It happened at Dan Foley Park just before midnight. Police say multiple shooters got into a gun battle in the parking lot and say two women caught in the crossfire were innocent bystanders. A 34yearoldyearold woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim was treated and released. The the sheriffs deputy who shot and killed andy lopez is going back to work next week. This fall the private Catholic School began weekly alcohol testing. Using hair samples the tests can reveal if a student has had more than an occasional glass of wine in the past 90 days.
