Officials say the water has been drained but it is still unclear whether any rods were damaged. Demolition of the original eastern span of the bay bridge is moving along. Crews are taking apart the 78 yearold bridge in roughly the reverse order of how it was built. Demolition started back in april. So far about 800 feet of the bridge has been taken down. One person reported killed in the crash that happened about an hour ago, almost an hour and a half ago on northbound 680 before pacheco. One overturned vehicle. Westbound bay bridge, this is backed up for a little bit. But not a huge delay coming into the city. Were looking at the commute here on 880 northbound. Riders who normally take the ferry between marin county in San Francisco<\/a> are out of luck today. Actually, the people who are technically on strike are the 16 ferry captains asking for a better contract. You can see that engineers and deck hands are standing in solidarity with him. 9,000 people from the north bay had to scramble to find another way to work this morning. The reason, the captains are angry that the Golden Gate Bridge<\/a> district is offering 9 raises over three years. Captains want 12 . They say that they will have to pay more for healthcare anyway. The district argues that its captains make 83,000 a year and outearn those others by far. Commuters are taking it in stride. One man biked it to work. I think a lot of my coworkers will choose to work from home or take an alternate route. Some people will take the bus. Reporter are reporter are you frustrated at all . No. Its friday. Its an easy day. Reporter the district is not planning to have any extra buses because it says fridays are typically light. There are no more buses running from the larkspur ferry. The San Francisco<\/a> chronicle reports several of the steel rods that anchor the new span may have corroded due to water leaks on the bridge. Caltrans found the water last week and they believe the leaks may date back to 2010 before the tower was lowered into position. Airport duty managers throughout the country, held a teleconference call about the situation in chicago. Now at last check here at sfo, there were five departure cancellations and four arrival cancellations from either chicago open hair or midway airports. This is in response to the suspicious fire that broke out at the faa radar center in aurora, illinois, a western suburb of chicago earlier this morning. At the American Airlines<\/a> terminal back here at sfo, several passengers were left wondering what what to do the next. Pretty frustrated because we i looked on my emails this morning and nobody let me know that this had happened. So we came in, you know, got up superearly, came to the airport and then find this out. Reporter along with the fire police in aurora, there was a man with selfinflicted wounds, the ap is reporting that this man was a contract employee with the faa. Without air Traffic Control<\/a> monitoring the space, other flights are having to divert around that area and thats causing delays. San franciscos fire chief is now getting a strong show of support. Earlier this week, groups representing rank and file firefighters called for joanne hayeswhite to step down. They pointed to what they called a crisis in confidence in her ability to lead the department. But a number of chief supporters came to her defense during the commission meeting. They included the heads of other city departments. Shes a role model to all, and to young girls like my own daughters in particular that have more confidence that anybody is possible. The Fire Commission<\/a> heard several hours of testimony but it did not take any action regarding her future as San Francisco<\/a>s fire chief. Ktvus cameras went inside an oakland apartment complex described by the city of oakland as a public nuisance. Now, the Hillside Apartments<\/a> in east oakland tenants complained the units are badly maintained and the area is controlled by gangs and drug dealers. One tenant showed us a window broken last june. He said the owners and Property Managers<\/a> still will not fix. A woman showed us photos of her son covered in bug bites. She says the apartment complex is infected infested with insects. I got kid, teenagers with bite marks. They go to school. Now they are fighting because somebody is picking on them because in class, they got a fleabite mark or its not right. Last weekend, there was a Fatal Shooting<\/a> outside of the complex. The oakland City Attorneys Office<\/a> is suing the buildings owner, allegations of unsafe living conditions. An historic plg in redwood City Building<\/a> in redwood city is going up for sale for one dollar. There is a catch. A small queen anne victorian. This is from googles street view. You can see traffic moving through this area. But the chp is continuing to investigate this deadly crash that happened about 7 00 this morning. It involved the van you just saw there alongside [audio difficulties] a man riding inside that car was thrown from the car. He was not wearing his seat belt and he died here at the scene. I want to bring in chp officer daniel hill to give us more information about this accident. We received calls about an erratic driver. We got reports of witnesses that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed making erratic lane changes. He eventually made an erratic lane change to the left and struck the van. That van overturned. The sedan driving erratically slammed in the Center Divide<\/a> and veered off the lanes struck a roadway sign and fence, overturned and was ultimately ejected. Reporter this gentleman was not wearing a seat belt. Whats the take away from a crash like this. The majority of rollover crashes that the Highway Patrol<\/a> responds to are noninjury crashes provided the person wears their seat belt. Thats often the situation in lifeordeath situations. The fire is now of 68 conned. Dash dash the fire is now 68 contained. Homes are still threatened. Yesterday, thousands were threatened. Reporter the rain is great news in terms of increasing relative humidities and lowering temperatures allowing firefighters to definitely make additional headway on the fire. Six people have been hurt. A dozen homes have burned since the fire started almost two weeks ago. Some San Francisco<\/a> firefighters who helped battle the king fire are now back home and we were there as they unpacked their gear last night after nearly a week on the fire lines. No firefighters from San Francisco<\/a> were hurt in the fire. The city of pleasanton will reduce penalties on people who use too much water. Earlier, the city imposed tough tynes for people who didnt reduce water use by 25 . But after the Community Came<\/a> together and slashed water use by more than a third over the summer, well, the city will now ease those fines. According to the contra costa times, pleasantons Water Conservation<\/a> rate is among the top ten in the state. Want to check in with sal. Good news. That person was ejected and died at the scene. Other people were injured but not as seriously. We have a lot of slow traffic in the area. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. You can see traffic is moderate. Its backed up for a five, ten minute delay coming into San Francisco<\/a>. We have a little more traffic than usual. Theres no golden gate ferry service. Some people may be driving instead. Traffic through marinwood is heading down to san rafael. A little bit slow, usually on fridays, we dont have any friday. So there is an effect it seems from the ferries not being in operation. Lets go back to the desk. The actions of some pretty alert neighbors are paying off in a san jose neighborhood thats been plagued with recent burglaries. But theres still concerns because theres low police arriving. Janine de la vega has more. Reporter were here on white road in the area in thier green area of in the evergreen area of san jose. Police say a neighbor called police after watching a break in and it led to three arrests. In another neighbor, officers captured three more burglars. They are investigating whether they are responsible for other thefts. Heres video when San Jose Police<\/a> took down burglary suspects accused of victimizing a neighborhood in the evergreen district. It was an alert neighbor who called police after observing suspicious activity. When officers arrived, they found one man serving as a lackout and two others lookout and two others in a home breaking into a safe. Police are encouraging residents to form watch groups. The Police Officers<\/a> Association Says<\/a> in 2010, 47 million was reported stolen property. The latest number show its up to 76 million. We dont have the staffing that we would like to have to address the issues. Were partnering with the community, working with Neighborhood Watch<\/a> groups and other community leaders, so they can help us. Really be the eyes and ears of their particular neighborhood. People are concerned because of the budget cuts, the lack of police presence, what not. Its nice to know at least that they are around. It literally is hey, web surfer, run this program that allows me to completely take over your computer. The bug was exposed wednesday night. Since then, people widespread have been rushing to install patches. Windows computers are not affected because they dont run the bash software. They are picketing at the larkspur Ferry Terminal<\/a>. Some have been out there for four years. They want a pay raids be a they want no pay raise and no increase in their healthcare premiums. Instead of taking the ferry weve noticed some people have taken their bikes into work. These are the strikers out here. They are getting a lot of honks of support. There are 16 ferry captains. You can see that engineers and deck hands are standing in solidarity with them. 9,000 people from the north bay had to scramble to find another way to work this morning. The reason, ferry captains are angry that the golden gate Transit District<\/a> is offering 9 raises over three years. Captains want 12 because they say they are gonna have to pay more for healthcare. The district argues that its captains at 83,000 a year outearn those in other fleets by far. Is this an inconvenience for you . A little bit, actually, yes. Were not very happy about that but were supportive of them. Reporter do you normally take the ferry every morning . We love it. Reporter the district is not planning to have any extra buses because it says fridays are typically light. There are no buses running from the larkspur ferry.
