Firefighters in vallejo still at the scene of a late night fire, one that destroyed a building that used to House School District offices. Alex savidge is in vallejo to tell us why there were people inside that abandoned building. Alex . Reporter well, dave, for years, according to firefighters, squatters had been living in this abandoned building. It once housed the main offices for the vallejo unified School District. But recently, it was owned by a private company. According to one report, this building was set to be demolished next month. Now, as you can see, even more reason to tear it down. It was simply gutted by this fire late last night. There has been a fire crew out here throughout the night to keep an eye on any flareups. This fire caught fire at 10 00 last night and there were a number of people inside at the time. In fact, when vallejo firefighters first got out here, they got reports from a number of witnesses about a man and his dog still trapped inside that burning building. Crews, though, could not go inside right away. It took about an hour to knock down the fire. Thats when firefighters went to do a roombyroom search. They didnt find any victims inside. Firefighters say this search of the building was made quite challenging by the fact that this building has been very well lived in. Theres trash and human waste everywhere from all of the People Living here. The building is a Vacant School Building with known transients in it. We got multiple calls of the fire and reports of people still inside while the fire was actively burning. Reporter and over the past few years, Vallejo Police have been to this building a number of times to remove Homeless People from the place. But, again, according to one report, squatters continue to break back into this building and continue to live here. There were two minor injuries related to last nights fire. One of them a firefighter who suffered a puncture wound, im told. The other was a person who got out of this building who suffered minor smoke inhalation but refused to be treated here at the scene. Again, this building that once belonged to the vallejo School District and housed its main offices now owned by a private company. It was set to be demolished next month and that may still well be the case after this fire last night. By the way, we do expect a fire investigator to come out here at some point this morning to gather evidence and try to figure out exactly what started the fire. Alex savidge live in vallejo. All of this follows the controversial shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown which triggered protests around the nation and right here in the bay area. Ktvu fox 2s katie utehs is live in the newsroom. And you have more on that report, katie. Dave, good morning. The report shows a pattern and practice of discrimination involving both the Police Department and the court system in ferguson. Expected to be released in full today, the report ordered by attorney general eric holder reviewed some 35,000 pages of police records. The d. O. J. Found police there routinely violated the Constitutional Rights of africanamericans. The report says officers used Excessive Force against black people and too often charged them with petty offenses. Now, some are calling for the chief of police to resign. That demands a certain level of accountability. I think the chief out there has to resign. Its the only way this community can move forward. The report also points to problems within the court system with racist jokes circulating amongst emails. Africanamericans also were less likely to have their cases dismissed by municipal judges. So what changes can come from this report . The Justice Department can negotiate policy changes with ferguson officials. If that doesnt work, the department could sue the city to force change. Now, the city of ferguson released a statement saying, it a received the d. O. J. Report and that city leaders are currently reviewing it. Dave . Thank you.
