KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 430am July 6, 2016

West macarthur and 39th ad as well and the report from 4 00 this morning, you heard a pretty loud explosion because three cars caught on fire as well. If we have that, go ahead and take a listen. This fire started roughly around 2 45 this morning. And there is a loud bang coming from this construction as well. That was pretty loud there, guys. That caught us off guard there. But this fire here in emeryville. It is being the people in charge, the firefighters in charge, almeda county fire, mutual aid, oakland fire crews are here as well. Again, this has gone to five alarms. We understand that an apartment complex right next to this one that is burning on 39th and adeline, all of those tenants have been evacuated so far. We see a lot of people out here on the street. A lot of people heard what happened. And george singh who lives in emeryville, good morning to you. Can you describe what you saw. I heard a big bang in my apartment. And a lot of us were here. I live on the third floor here. And then i saw the flames. And then i just came down, and to see what is going on here. And i saw this building, it is burning, and big flames. You mentioned to me that you heard a loud bang at first. And what happened after that . It lit up. He just lit up. And then i just heard that, and then the flames. You were saying that you saw this apartment complex, what we understand, an apartment complex, how long ago was it starting to be built here . This starts like three months ago. And i am seeing this, since the beginning of, you know, of every day, and i was so happy, you know, it is going up. And so beautiful. And it just makes me sad, you know, what happened to this building. And i just live across the street right here. Live across the street. Thank you for your time. We are glad youre safe. We havent heard any reports of any injuries at this point. We hope to get an update from almeda fire here shortly. The fire continues to burn. Technically in emeryville, again, san pablo avenue and west measure arthur where were standing but you see cross streets as well. 39th is nearby and 35th as well. And we continue to stay updated on ktvu as well as online. Brian, before you go, quick question, i was going to ask you, and i was looking, standing in front of the store where the lights are on. And i was wondering, the fire is so close to power lines, and whether any power has been cut out in the area. From what we understand, at least looking at the street, and the stores as you mentioned, it doesnt appear that power has been cut out. But you mentioned power lines. Within the past 15 minutes, i would say some electrical lines that were i guess installed in the building previously, there was a large explosion, a large bang, and then a large spark that came out of that as well. So at least those lines, at least inside the building, are affected as well. But at least according here, to the street here on san pablo avenue, it doesnt appear electricity or electric power was affected. We will stay on top of that and get you an update in the next half hour. Brian, we will talk to you later. Thank you, brian at the Oakland Emeryville border. Lets go to sal now. Sal youre watching traffic there and everyplace else. You will see the fire crews arriving from all over almeda county. A couple of engines and trucks, at least one engine and one Truck Company came from hayward. To give you an idea how big the fire is. So you are going to see units on the freeway. In fact when i was driving to work, the fire truck passed me, on the freeway, so they are coming from all over the place, here. And a very good point is even though the lanes are not blocked and we are looking at video sent in by people who have seen the fire, on social media, and even though the freeway lanes are not affected, it is clearly visible from the freeway and it will be a distraction for drivers. This is one of the pictures where you can clearly see how visible it is from the freeway. This was take an little while ago. The flames were a little bigger. But you can clearly still see activity from the freeway, and it is going to have an impact on traffic. Lets take a look at some of these other commutes as we transition. This is a look now, at the commute from vacaville, fairfield, vallejo, a nice looking commute with no major issues as you drive through. The bay bridge toll plaza has not been affected. And traffic is still light getting into San Francisco. And lets go to steve now, with todays weather. Thank you, sal. Very good morning. Very cool morning, i might add. There are a few 40s here in the mix. Calistoga and nevada and woodside with upper 40s. And i think we will see more here, before everything is said and done. Our good friend john berelli. Good morning, mr. B. Nice and cool. 52. Marvelous temperatures. And this week, for sure. And i have no problem keeping these Cool Temperatures here. The fog, i suspect, it and i think we get a little northwest breeze and the water temperatures go down. They did. This is actually right where they should be this time of the year. Bodega bay should be 51. They are 51. And the fog has no problem forming even though the inland temperatures are coming down, down, down. A pretty good breeze for many. Local over San Pablo Bay and fairfield. And turbocharged lately. And 40s and 50s, with one 60 in brentwood. That is not too bad. And 48 in novato. What about the peninsula . 47 at woodside. Very cool for atherton. Menlo park and stanford, Holding Steady at 50. They may sneak in later. What about mon tarot, 54. And mid50s san carlos. The system will continue to work its way to the north. Even though it is very weak. A stronger one is poised to dig in and move in to Northern California by friday and saturday. I dont think we will get rain out of it. We may get drizzle. But there may be rain northward, ukia, friday into saturday. And in the meantime, a cool pattern, 60s and 70s. And a few 80s. Back to pam and dave for more news. All right, steve, thank you. Time is 4 36. We are learning more this morning, about how bad the problem withle illegal fireworks was, in san jose. On the fourth of july. This is cell phone video shot by a man who lives in east san jose. That was one example. People who live on ever glade avenue say the illegal explosives were so loud, and so frequent, the noise set off car alarms. Then minutes later, there were sounds of people screaming. As you can see, people rushing, look in the middle of the screen, rushing to help a man down on the ground. The man who shot the video doesnt want us to tell you his name. But he says the man appeared to be hurt badly. I would say his face is probably he probably lost an eye. His shoulder got hurt pretty bad. His knee was pretty much all blood on his knee. His face got blood. Police say the injured man and another man who was also hurt, they were rushed to the hospital. Their names and their conditions have not been made public. As yet. One neighbor says he hopes people will think twice about setting off illegal fireworks. After watching that video from monday night. Well, some illegal fireworks in oakland set a tree on fire. And the fire threatened the home of a disabled woman. Ktvu christian captain spoke to a man who rushed in to that home, to save the woman. Everyone at 76 and hillside in oakland reported hearing nonstop fireworks, after dark, on july 4th. Neighbors say one of those fireworks shot across the street, and set this tree on fire. You can see deshawn holecomb rushing into the blaze after he heard that people were still inside the building. I heard the lady screaming as i was coming around the corner and by the time i got around here, i confirmed that it was still somebody in the house. So lets go in there and get them out thereof. Holecomb returned to the home by daylight and this womans daughter has multiple sclerosis was not leaving without her daughter. And the two families who lived around the corner from each other met formally for the first time. I am forever thankful. Just the right place, right time. Including deshawns mother. Who you could hear in the video calling out to her son. When i saw him go in, i was a little worried. I thought gee, i hope he is going to be okay first of all, and he was in there for so long, and i thought am i going to have to run in . Oh, gosh. With flames in the front of the house, holecomb and another man who rushed in were forced to use a side ex toit get everyone to safety. They came in and they picked her up and they were concerned if it was anybody else in the house. And they were just wonderful. Holecome says he was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. And he hopes in the future, others will rush in to help when called. I got four young children. So you know, them seeing this, and seeing something besides all the other stuff that goes on around here, hopefully this will stick with them for a lifetime. All that is left is a burned tree. Melted plastic. And the bond of neighbors looking out for one another, which brought these families together. In oakland, christian captain, ktvu, fox 2 news. Well, there were protests in baton rouge, louisiana, overnight. Following the deadly shooting of an africanamerican man by a police officer. Police say they were called to a Convenience Store, early yesterday morning, and after someone reported a man selling cds, had threatened him with a gun. The two officers responded. He had some sort of confrontation with the suspect. 37yearold antoine sterling. The owner of the Convenience Store says one officer used a taser on sterling and the second officer tackled him. And the first officer shot him when the second officer was trying to tackle him. Self employed and contract workers coming up at 5 00, a task force just set up in San Francisco to monitor the rise of the socalled gig economy. And a huge fire in the east bay. Near the Oakland Emeryville border. May affect traffic. It is very close or very visible from the freeway. And as traffic gets busier, we will see some backups. Cool, cool pattern here for july. Thats for sure. Some upper 40s for lows. And another solid fog bank. We will talk about this pattern and see how long it is going to last. Good morning, we are looking at a fire in the emeryville area. The east bay bridge shopping center. Some of the businesses around there, the home depot, and the nordstrom rack. This started about 2 30 this morning. The cameras panning around. You can see the flames. And the flames were able to be seen from interstate 580, 880, and highway 24. As pam just said, brian flores has been out there since early this morning. He will bring us another report, coming up at 5 00. Time now is 4 45. In other news this morning, an iraq war veteran with ptsd is heart broken. Her service dog is missing in the east bay. Ktvu christina rendone went out with friends of the veteran as they searched for her beloved pet. We think he is afraid enough of the water that he wouldnt have tried to swim across to the other side. Chris pierson is not giving up help. This is the third day he boarded a boat in search of the service dog leo. They were calling for him up and down the channel. And all over the area where we were looking. Peterson is scanning the shoreline of sherman island. He is like a golden ciao. A shepherd size. Reddish hair. You havent seen anything . He brought us to the point where leo vanished on sunday. Leo . Come on, boy. He was with a group of people on the island, baby sitting leo, when after no more than 15 minutes, leo was gone. He believes the dog got spooked by fireworks. Someone saw him heading off into the woods right there, which is where the tent was. And we think he went to the tent site but thats the last anybody saw him. He was looking for chris or looking for me. Speaking via skype in texas, the owner nicollette says she left the service dog behind because he doesnt do well on planes. He has been with leo for three years. He has been the best service dog, he is my best friend. Anybody that meets leo knows how important he is to me. She says leo is trained to sense emotions and has saved her life many times. That is why she wants to save his. I cant imagine my life without him. And so like knowing that he is out there, by himself, it is terrifying. Peterson searched the island again on foot. He was like a member of the family. And having him missing was pretty tough. He is hoping someone spotted leo over the weekend. Maybe picked him up on their boat. And doesnt know who to call. Leo. Our hope is that someone will spot him, somebody will recognize him and we will get a call. Christina rendone, ktvu, fox 2 news. Christina, thank you. The owner of leo posted a craigslist ad offering a 1,000 reward for his return. You can get more information on the web link section, of ktvu. Com. Hopefully he is safe with somebody. I know. Somebody picked him up. We will keep updated on that. 47 is the time right now. Sal is 4 47 is the time right now. Sal is looking at updates on the fire in the area. We are talking about possible Power Outages. Maybe traffic lights around emeryville, oakland, what can you tell us, sal . I am just listening to them draw resources from all of the Engine Companies that have arrived on the scene. This has grown to a six alarm fire and you can clearly see it from the freeway. And you can also see emergency vehicles coming in, from all over almeda county. As they have units from hayward, and almeda county, and this fire in emeryville, but oakland has a big response, and albany fire department, is there, and Berkeley Fire Department is there. And all of the Fire Departments that have sent units, and almeda sent a unit and this is putting just a lot of emergency vehicles on the freeway. And also, people may actually be people are curious, they are going to stop or at least slow down, to see what is going on and that could be a hazard, and pay attention, heads up, the guy in front of you may be slowing way down to take a look and could cause an incident. Just be on your most alert driving behavior. If youre driving anywhere near 580, 24 interchange. In this area. And emeryville. And the macarthur maze, et cetera. Lets move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. We do not have any major delays reported here. At the bay bridge. In fact, it looks very light. And if youre taking the Altamont Pass, the Altamont Pass pass has been okay. The tracy commute is very normal. 580 is backed up. Off of 205. 205 is backed up for a mile before mountain house. A normal looking commute, which is slow over the Altamont Pass. Lets go to steve now, with the forecast. Sal, im not a lookyloo but when i came through the caldecott it was easy to see. It is hard to avoid. You saw how big it was. I mean you are going to slow down a little bit. And some of that smoke, as our director jeff green just imagined, is kind of meanders around here. So that will play into it as well. Thank you, sal. It will be a traffic hazard, yes. Would he have a really solid fog bank again. Water temperatures came down a little bit. Right where they should be this time of the year. 51, 57, 58. They warmed up a teeny bit and comed down the last 24 hours. A mix of fog and some smoke in there and a big fog bank out there and it continues to ramp up. It is losing its support. And i mean the cool air aloft, and the cooler inland temperatures, really are not beneficial to a fog bank. But this one has no problem. And you get the low pressure to the north and colder temperatures, and that certainly helps and thats what is happening here. We get some pretty chilly lows though. And blustery conditions. A breezy day, even if you dont get the fog, and a little bit cooler. West of sfo and west of hayward and livermore and san jose and down to morgan hill, a southeast breeze and i mean san jose has an east southeast at 13. And Mountain View has a southeast breeze. So that can be a refreshing one for some. And it might even bring up some of the garlic from gilroy, from san jose, and the southeast breeze can do that. 49 novato. And san rafael at 51. So cool there. And 50s for others. And brentwood, clicked under 60. And 53 the morning trifecta. San martin and gilroy. And checking in at 53. And 52 scotts valley. And look at cupertino, a chilly 50 degrees. And santa clara at 53. And so it feels a little cool to you, it is. 57 book ends, ukia and sacramento. And very thick fog has made it along the Salinas River valley and almost to san luis obispo. A teeny weak system to the north. And a much stronger one poised to move. In it will dig in to Northern California. It will keep us cool. And breezy and windy. And maybe give us a little drizzle here as we head to late friday and saturday. And i would think any rain would be confined to ukia north and i will deal with it friday and into friday. And 60s or 70s. And upper 70s, mid70s. Santa rosa. 77. And san jose, 75. And livermore and concord at 79 and fairfield. And antioch, and brentwood and clear lake and in the 80s. And morgan hill and gilroy has cooled off. So fog will be with us on thursday and the system moves to the north and increasing low clouds. And breezy and windy in the weekend. And it looks a little warmer on sunday but staying on the cool side for many. It is cool this morning. Chilly this morning. Steve, thank you. You bet. Time is 4 52. Some bay area drivers apparently have to worry about a lot more than just traffic. Up next, the local freeway, where the most animals are killed. And what researchers say can be done to change that. Good morning. Welcome back to mornings on 2. We will go right back out to our developing story. We have been following all morning. The big fire right on the Oakland Emeryville border. Here is a live picture right now of that fire. It is still burning. Pretty strong. The area, we understand some buildings may have been evacuationed in this area. Firefighters from several departments are now working on the fire. And we understand that it was a building under construction. This is on san pablo avenue. Near interstate 580. And i know like at about 3 00 this morning, you can see it is a pretty tall structure, and now, on the other side, as brian told us, part of this building has collapsed. And heavy flames, smoke can be seen from there, and the area, as well as the freeway, interstate 80 and highway 24. And brian flores out there on the scene, we will check in with him, for all of the updates, on the fire, and possible powerballs, we saw a lot Power Outages we saw a lot of people standing in front of busines
