KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 6am May 31, 2017

Lets go over to sal. Steve, we have a look at some of the busy traffic we have seen, especially at the bay bridge. One of the things i want to tell you, the bay bridge is slow and ill tell you why. If you look at this picture, if youre brushing your teeth, look at this. This is what youre dealing with at the bay bridge and its because of a crash in San Francisco that slowed the meet are lights down at the toll plaza, slowing traffic on the bridge and so theres a backup there. It was not the worst thing in the world but it caused slow traffic and i would say you can add another 10 minutes to your commute, 10 or 15, and you should be fine. Again, it was not out there for that long but it definitely did a bit of damage to the morning commute getting in to San Francisco. This is a look at interstate 880. Right now is a good time for you, in case you say, i dont want to use the bay bridge, i could go down to the san mateo bridge and get myself a decent commute, that is not looking bad heading out to the high rise. We have to talk about how very slow it is on the tracy commute, another day on 205 and 580. 680 is not as bad. The san mateo bridge looks go and so does the bridge here. 6 02. Back to you. A jetblue flight bound for sfo forced to land in grand rapids, michigan, after a passengers laptop caught fire. Ktvu is at sfo now. Item us more about what happened. Reporter good morning, dave and pam. We have a jetblue plane here behind us. We asked the duty manager here at the airport if in fact that was the plane that was involved in last nights incident and its got clear if this is the plane that was forced to land here at sfo after about midnight last night. That, after making an unscheduled landing in michigan. Jetblue flight 915 was scheduled to fly from jfk to San Francisco, but about an hour into the flight, crew members and passengers saw smoke coming from an overhead bin. Apparently a battery or charger for a laptop computer was smoldering. The crew decided to reroute and land in grand rapids, just to make sure everything was okay. The official twitter feed from the airport in grand rapids confirms their fire crews responded to a lithium fire on board but the fire had been put out. Some passengers who spoke with ktvu earlier this morning say they smelled smoke and saw thatburned backpack. Im not exactly sure what it was. I know it was a backpack and it was [inaudible] and it was not on. I believe it was overheated, something else, but the backpack was partially burned. Reporter the faa has some guidelines recording the lithiumion batteries. The batteries are okay to bring on board and you can bring on spares in your carryon luggage and its okay to have them in they are in a device that you are checked, but the faa does have a ban on spare batteries in checked luggage. As for the passengers, they were tired after arriving here in San Francisco after the unscheduled delay and landing in grand rapids but they were in generally good spirits, just happy to be here safe and on the ground in San Francisco, and to complete the long trip. Thank you very much. We continue to follow developing news out of afghanistan where a suicide bomber killed 80 people and injured another 350. A car bomb wind off near the German Embassy in the capital city of kabul during the morning rush hour. Workers from the german and pakistan embassies are among those injured. China, india and japan also report damage to some of their buildings. Here at home, Oakland Police gave us an update on an overnight surge for a homicide suspect. The search was called off. The suspect got away. Authorities responded to reports of a shooting yesterday afternoon near 51st avenue and international boulevard and skyfox flew over that area. Police found a man who had been shot inside of a car. That man later died at a hospital. Investigators say the shooter was tracked to a home on that very same street where the victim was found and there was a standoff with police that lasted into the night. The shooter was not found. This reportedly was oaklands 26th homicide of the year. This time last year, there was 17. New this morning, the woman at the center of Oakland Police scandal will be speaking out today after the city Council Voted to settle her claim. Early this morning the Council Agreed to pay her 989,000. The 19yearold was a teen prostitute and initially said she had sex with as many as 30 bay area officers. She says they exemployeded her some while she was still she says they exploited her, some while she was 16 years old. She can put this behind her because it was quite emotional and traumatic, the event, to be involved with the Oakland Police officers. Criminal activity happened under the watch of the city of oakland and, you know, whatever jasmine gets, more power to her in that way. The taxpayers have to pay for that and thats why its really important that we have proper oversight. There is still a criminal case pending by the Alameda County district attorney, along with four other claims of exploitation by officers in richmond, livermore, San Francisco, and Alameda County. If you are just waking up and checking out your social media, you might see something unusual trending this morning, the word covfefe with many different pronunciations. Its from President Trumps twitter count, appearing to be a misspelling. This latenight message comes as the white house is trying to revamp its communication efforts. We are live from washington with doug. You know more about this and even know how to stay it. Good morning. Reporter good morning. I dont know much more about it. The pronunciation is still kind of in the eye of the pronouncer, i guess, but this was a very unusual tweet to come up from the president last night, shows you the degree to which people hang on his twitter account to see exactly where he stands, and the amazing thing, this tweet sat there, almost all night, before it was finally deleted and replaced this morning. We never really see donald trump with his smartphone but its apparently never far away. Just around midnight last night here in washington, came this tweet, despite the constant negative press covfefe perhaps trying to write coverage but the incomplete tweet stood overnight. Fake news. Fake news. Reporter theres little question that trump is probably his best advocate and that can leave the white house communication shop playing catchup and the tension is real. Sean spicer abruptly ended the briefing yesterday, leaving reporters stunned. While spicers did he my as press secretary has beenpredicted, Communications Director dubke is leaving. Mike is a pros pro, a long term Strategic Communication thinker. This white house is on hyper drive in terms of making news and its hard to plan in an environment like this. Reporter this is a president who is used to calls his own shots, even this morning reports that trump has given his personal cell phone number to a number of world leaders, an unusual move by a president who defies convention. Reporter as far as the meaning of last nights tweet, the president addressed this in another tweet this morning although it doesnt exactly clear things up. Who can figure out the true meaning of covfefe, he asks. Enjoy, he says. Back to you. Something else we know its happening today, the va secretary will be at a rare White House Briefing today. What can we expect there . Reporter we say its rare because certainly White House Briefings of common but to have a cabinet secretary carry out the briefing is unusual. He is in the spotlight, given the kind of commitments that the president made in. Seventy twoing the va care through the course of the campaign. We dont know specifically what hes there to announce, if anything, today. The va certainly has been a controversy, as well. 6 10, new environmental policy gaining steam across california, now city leaders in berkeley are considering it, what it means for restaurants in berkeley. Questions about airline safety, as United Airlines is being accused of flying planes that should have been grounded. We had rain overnight, yes, not a lot. We have a combination of low clouds and some higher clouds, but theres breaks in the clouds so a little sun in the wednesday forecast. Welcome back to mornings on 2. The time, 6 13. Today a jury in san jose is scheduled to begin deliberating the sentence for the man convicted of killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. Garciatorres was sentenced to either life in prison or given the Death Penalty. The prosecutor argued for the Death Penalty saying Garcia Torres forever silenced lamar when he killed her five years ago. But the defense argued the jury should consider that Garcia Torres grew up in a climate of poverty, neglect and abuse and remember he has a child of his own who will be affected by their decision. He went on to say that either way, garciatorres will die in prison. Sentencing has been set for july 27th for a napa woman and her boyfriend convicted in the torture and killing of the womans 3yearold daughter. The verdict against kruger and warner were announced yesterday. Prosecutors say they beat 3 yearold Kayleigh Slusher to death and hid her body in a freezer. They both face life prison sentences without the possibility of parole. Reports indicate the port of San Francisco is considering building a hotel near fishermans warf. The idea faces many hurdles. City voters would have to repeal a measure approved back in 1990 that banned Hotel Constructionon the pier. In a poll conducted, only 17 favored repealing the ban. 71 opposed Hotel Construction along the waterfront. Time, 6 15, fewer americans are going out to lunch and the Restaurant Industry is hurting because of it. According to a new survey, americans made 400 million fewer trips to restaurants at lunchtime last year, more than 3 billion in lost business. The workers blame higher restaurant prices and less free time at work. Casual sitdown restaurants like applebees, they are getting hit the hardest. Food suppliers, including tyson foods, are also seeing a drop in their income. 6 15. Lets check in with sal for a look at traffic. Any problems . Nothing major. Traffic is slow. A lot of people eat at their desks now. Any of my friends who have like the traditional 9 00 to 5 00, we have a hard time meeting for coffee, they are so business. Right. They are eating at their computers. I eat here. I have to clean this up. Lets do the traffic report. Theres not a lot going on but theres slow traffic out there, westbound 24, moderately heavy. 680, getting slow. So is highway 4, bay point, coming over the hill to concord. The macarthur maze, a big backup because of an earlier crash off the bridge in San Francisco on the skyway. It was not that serious but we did have slow traffic and just a little bit slower, another 10 minutes you need an extra 10 minutes or so, extra 10 or 15 minutes at the bay bridge toll plaza to stay on schedule. Again, it could be a lot worse. This is a look at interstate 880, looking good in both directions here, near high street, downtown oakland. 580, slow on the altamount pass. 680, a bit heavy through pleasanton. A rockslide at the altamount pass, train number 3, delayed 40 minutes because of that. Lets bring steve in. We had light rain overnight, not much, but the last day of may and some of the rain buckets were clicking along, and livermore, many reports of. 04. I went with the. 05. Blackhawk,. 04. San jose,. 03. Danville,. 02. Napa, the same. There was other locations. Charles says, signs of rain in brentwood overnight, yes. Thank you for that. Michael, up in the santa cruz mountains, a cool 51, damp, no measurable rain, a light northwest breeze. Well get breaks though, and sun and clouds coming out, but breezy, and some of the rain moves out of the picture, morgan hill, hollister, and this is now out to the valley, heading to the sierra nevada. But still a breeze in place, but not howling like yesterday. I draw your attention to this, the cold sea surface temperatures, San Francisco buoy, a brisk 49 degrees, 1 degree colder than bodega bay. Look, listen, seriously, if these water temperatures stay in cold, theres no way San Francisco, the coast, much of the bay will have a warm summer. If they go up to 58 or 59, then all bets are off. As long as we have the series of little system coming in, that enhances that and fog forms rapidly, as we have already seen. 52 up in truckee. Some of that rain is moving in up there, right there, and not a lot, but a little bit. A system went through monday, and heres the tuesday, low clouds, and overnight, clearing taking place, the High Pressure coming in, but still low clouds, but temperatures will rebound tomorrow. 60s on the temperatures, 70s inland. Well get breaks in the clouds, partly sunny later on after a mostly cloudy morning. Warmer inland friday. I think theres too much fog and too cold temperatures and another system comes in for another cooldown. I know theres graduations coming up. Temperatures will go, but then drop, and go up, and drops, all the way up to the 15th of june. But not really rain . A lot of fog, cool. Thank you very much. 6 20, the time, state lawmakers up against the clock, coming up, the rush to get bills off the ground and how one could affect the timing of when kids go to school. Southwester airlines testing a faster way to get you off a plane, how the Company Wants to eliminate that long wait at the gate. Where each drop was formulated to be smarter. Even smarter than that. So if a color didnt go on evenly, it would balance itself out to reveal its truest, richest state. If a paint could realize the fullest potential of any color. You have to wonder. Is it still paint . Aura interior from benjamin moo®e. Only available at independently owned paint and hardware stores. Welcome back to mornings on 2. 6 23. United airlines is facing a 400,000 fine for allegedly flying an unsafe plane. The faa says the airline replaced a fuel pump pressure switch on one of the carriers boeing 747, but the faa said they did tot complete a required inspection of the repair before the plane flew again. United faces a fine of 435,000. Today, a group of education advocates in the south bay are heading to sacramento. Its their 15th annual bus trip, pushing for Public Education funding and ktvu is there in san jose. Look at all the activity behind you, over your shoulder. They are getting ready to hit the road. Reporter yes. The bus arrived a couple of minutes ago. The crowd is gathered, and they are expecting about 150 people to be part of this trip up to sacramento and they will be talking to lawmakers there, not just about Education Funding but a number of other issues, Public Education and education issues overall, affecting the state of california. I have the organizers of the trip. What are the big issues you hope to speak with lawmakers about today . One of the big issues, we continue to push on, equalization of funding. Theres Many School District in Santa Clara County but they dont all get the same amount of perstudent funding. Reporter why is that . Its old formulas based on property tax assessments that go back before 1979, before prop 13 was enacted, and that formula was never adjusted or changed. We think we made a difference the last few years because the governor has taken some of the constraints off of funding so School Districts can increase their perpeople funding and it makes a big difference, you know, if youre getting two times the amount of money in different counties. Reporter you have nonprofit groups, students, in fact a couple of students here about to head off to college. One. Some of the most vocal people on this trip has been students. In one episode a couple of years ago, the students walked into a room when they were talking about the upcoming budget and demanded to be heard and said they didnt want the same disparities and the same lack of funding for their younger brothers and sisters that they had experienced. It was passionate and we think it made a difference. And the legislatures were struggling to get enough money down here for the schools. Reporter is there a concern at the state and local level about how federal education policies under the trump administration, funding being affected for local communities and schools, a lot of talk about School Vouchers and its impact. Were dealing with changes, you know, in the white house, the threats to the federal budget. We consider them threats. When you talk about cutting 30 of the healthcare, for students, you know, its hard to go to school with tooth aches and illness and succeed and a lot of kids will just stay home if they dont have health insurance. Thats the kind of examples were dealing with, not to mention theres a big push to take more money away from public educates for vouchers. Thank you very much. Well let you and everybody else here get on board. Youll be leaving pretty soon. Thanks for talking with us this morning. Thank you. Reporter important issues and topics for the people taking part in this trip to discuss with their state lawmakers in sacramento, spending the day there and hopefully meeting facetoface with the people talking about Education Funding. Well stay on that story all day. Ahead, theres fallout about the fight between the giants and the nationals, the two players involved are appealing their suspension, but another giants player will also miss time on the field. A jury in the south bay will begin deliberating the sentence for gar
