There is a house fire reported by the Fire Department at 42nd and judah. Its actually on 42nd street and im looking for the address as we speak here but it is not affecting traffic so much but theres a lot of fire activity here so roughly the area of 42nd and judah, thats good enough now to avoid. The rest of San Francisco and really the rest of the bay bridge is becoming a lot lighter as the morning wears on. The bay bridge does have a little bit of a backup but its not a huge one. It definitely is lighter than usual. Remember chp is doing maximum enforcement. That means theyll be looking for speeders. Lets move along and take a look at a picture of 880 north and southbound. Some people saying despite all the talk people werent expecting the crowd there today. We were taken a little bit by surprise when we were driving toward the airport at 4 00 this morning, there were a lot of cars on higenburger. At 5 00 id say thats when it was really busy in here. People were getting ready for the 6 00 and 7 00 flights. Now you can see the midmorning rush has sort of died down a little bit. Seems to be a little bit of a lull here. Not too many cars behind us. At one point the security line around 5 30 stretched out from the middle of the terminal in to the baggage claim area but even when it was busy, those security lines were moving pretty quickly. People seemed to be in good spirits. Oakland airport has become a more popular place to fly from. Air travel is up 9 compared to a year ago and last year it was up 6 from the year before that. Expect your flight today to be pretty full. We left our house at 4 30 so there was no traffic but i was surprised that so many people were already here. Especially in the morning, i was like oh, wow, i didnt think people would wake up this morning to fly. The things we do for green bean casserole. The Transportation Security Administration says its stepped up security for this period in the wake of the paris attacks. Tsa spokespersons say you can expect more hand swapping, shoe removes, even those with tsa precheck status so give yourself extra time if you plan to get on a flight today. Connecter, years ago, a couple years ago it was a bus that would take you from the coliseum to the airport. You dont have to leave the station. Then you take it here to the airport. It has been pretty popular. 1 Million People have ridden it in the last year. B. A. R. T. Longterm parking costs 5 to 7 a day and you have to reserve your space online. Santa clara county opened its emergency cold weather shelters early. Is it filling up . It wasnt full just yet because people just dont know that its actually open. I want to show you some of the people who did spend the night here in front of the bicardo reception center. Theyre just waking up right now. Its registering 39, 40 degrees. It dropped even lower overnight. I want to mention a couple years ago four people died on the streets here in Santa Clara County because of hypothermia. And county leaders, they dont want that to happen again. Surprisingly, as i mentioned, the cold weather shelters at the gilroy armory and ricardo reception center, there was still beds left. There are about 100 beds at each facility. Originally the homeless were told the shelters werent opening up until november 30th but county leaders decided to change that because of the forecast. Temperatures are expected to dip in to the 30s through sunday. They opened up the shelters nearly a week ahead of schedule. We found one man outside who didnt realize the shelters were taking dropins and he had such despair in his voice. My plan is to just weather it out. Just walk the streets and just be a regular person. Thats it. We told that man about the shelters and he walked in to get some more information and he plans on spending the night at the reception center. Theres an estimated 7,000 Homeless People here in Santa Clara County. Even though these cold weather shelters are here for the people to use, its still not enough for everybody. We asked the staff inside, are you short on anything . They said yes, they desperately need twin sized sheets, blankets, comforters and rain ponchos. It rained earlier this morning. The streets here are still wet. They said the people here you see milling about outside really could use them to take them out when it rains again, possibly next week. And you and i were talking earlier. Its cold where youre standing now. We can see the puffs of air coming out of your mouth when you speak. Its cold. It is. I know its going to get colder. Its not too bad now. Im always naturally cold but i have the long johns on and all these layers. With the sidewalks wet, we know people sleep in tents on the sleep and those just cant be comfortable. Its good these opened a week early. Time now 7 08. It appears a long battle in palo alto over the citys last mobile home park, its not over yet. The owners of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park with el camino have city approval to sell the property to a developer if they paid their tenants to help relocate. Those payments could reach 8 million. The owners are going to federal court saying the payment requirement is excessive. The parks 400 low income residents say theyre going to need some help finding a new place to live in one of the most expensive cities in the nation. Protest in chicago overnight mostly peaceful. Hundreds of people filled the streets after the release of a video showing an officer shooting and killing a teenager. Jason van dyke is charged in first degree murder in the death of 17yearold laquan mcdonald. The video youre about to see may be disturbing and hard to watch. Mcdonald appeared to be veering away from the officer when he was shot. Mcdonald is shot. He goes down. The officer keeps shooting. He shot him 16 times according to the video. Police say mcdonald was carrying a knife. This shooting occurred in october of last year. Last night there were protests across chicago. People upset about what was shown, what they saw in that video. Some have criticized the states attorney general for taking 13 months to charge the Police Officer and release that dashcam video. In the end the states attorney general decided to charge van dyke with murder because it was determined the teenager did not pose an immediate threat to grave bodily harm to that Police Officer. Of the eight or more officers on the scene, it was only the defendant who fired his weapon. The city of chicago has already agreed to a 5 million settlement with Laquan Mcdonalds family. Meantime, in minneapolis people continued protesting a Police Shooting there of an African American man even after five protesters were injured by gunfire monday night. Hundreds of demonstrators held this silent protest yesterday including people lying in the street. Protesters say they want video released of the deadly Police Shooting of 24yearold jamar clark 10 days ago. Monday night three white men in ski masks fired shots at the demonstrators. Police have arrested three suspects in connection with that shooting. Time is 7 16. Cal trans is calling the demolition of an old bay bridge pier a success. All environmental goals were met or exceeded. Cal trans says no birds or sea mammals were harmed. It shows fish placed in nets 150 feet away from the implosion survived. The report said the impact to Water Quality was much less than expected. Cal trans says there are more assessments to come and this will help with plans for other pier demolitions which could happen next november. A Service Technician at a texas mercedes dealership is being praised because he did the right thing after he found a bag full of cash in a car that had just been traded in. That technician is juan ibarra. He found a bag with stacks of 100 bills. 50,000. He immediately took the money to one of his bosses. They were able to track down the moneys owner, a bail bondsman, who received the money from a client. Ibarra said he just wanted to do the right thing and never thought about taking that money for himself. Money never belonged to me so never thought about keeping the money. Youre caught in that moment where you want to do the right thing. I got stuck on that. The bail bondsman was very grateful to get that money back. The pilot who surviferbd, hes refuting claims by turkey that turkey repeatedly warned the russian plane it was violating russian air space. The pilot said there was no warning before the plane was shot down. The other pilot died in the incident. Russia says it will not go to war with turkey but is calling the downing of the plane a provocation. Turkey announced the two countries will be meeting to talk in hopes of settling the matter. Turning now to the paris terror investigation. Police revealing the suspected mastermind was planning a suicide bombing targeting the financial district in paris just days after the initial attacks. Authorities tracked down the suspected ring leader Abdelhamid Abaaoud at a hideout north of paris last week. Police say he and another man who intended to take part in the suicide bombing of the financial district, they were killed in that raid. The police arent giving us any other specifics but say the plan to attack was set for last tuesday or wednesday.
