A cool 44 in santa rosa. 46 los gatos. 51 bookends morgan hill and gilroy. Upper 40s, low 50s for many of us. Some of that rain. Thats the trend this week. Thats High Pressure. Its moving towards us. It will be here starting tomorrow. Clouds, sun, lingering rain in the morning. Inland fog as well. Chilly morning. Highs starting off 40s, 50s. Alex, 7 01. Busy a bit. Its calmed down a bit. I think we are okay here, especially for this time of the morning. The toll plaza is where i want to go first. Its backed up through the maze as we give you a live look this morning. If you are making that ride westbound on interstate 80 heading towards the maze and trying to get into San Francisco, it is slow but we are not we are only seeing it backed up about into the albany area this morning. So thats pretty good, i would say. Now i will take you over to the Golden Gate Bridge. The traffic is pretty light am coming in from marin county this morning. An earlier crash near the Robin Williams tunnel in the southbound lanes of 101 is cleared up. Smooth sailing now south on 101 into San Francisco. I will show you on the maps here what the peninsula looks like. The ride looks pretty good on highway 101 in both directions, except for a pocket of slowing we see there 101 northbound in the san mateo area just north of 92. You can also see there that if you are coming across the san mateo bridge westbound towards the peninsula, its going to be slow to about midspan or so. In the south bay we have we had a crash earlier 101 northbound just north of the 880 connector. That has been cleared out of the way. But you can see a lot of residual slowing in that particular area. So 101 northbound heading up towards 880 fairly slow here at 7 02 this morning. Gasia, over to you. Thank you, alex. Right now pg e crews are repairing a broken gas line. This break happened during Stormy Weather over the weekend. Specifically, yesterday afternoon. Ktvus janine de la vega live in moraga. Hundreds of people are still without gas service right now . Reporter gasia, about 2,500 customers are affected by this, and this morning you can see crews are working to repair a gas line. You can see they are crouched over that hole that they actually had to cut into the boulevard near center street. The actual sinkhole is to the left there on the sidewalk. That hole opened up yesterday afternoon during the storm. A few hours later, traffic light pole that was unstable in the pavement fell seven feet down in the sinkhole. It pierced a gas pipe. Pg e turned off the gas at one this morning. So these residents and nearby businesses are dealing with that this morning. About 200 pg e representatives are coming to the neighborhood in the next hour to go door to door to customers to help them. Now, we asked when service would be restored, but heres what a spokeswoman told us. Its a little hard to say with gas because customers have to be home in order for service to be turned back on. If they are not home, we are going to try again and they are always more than welcome to call us directly. We are also going to have folks on hand here that are going to be talking to our customers and giving them updates and answering questions. Reporter the sinkhole hasnt been repaired yet. Right now pg e has the lead on this, and thats why this intersection is closed right now. Once the line is fixed, repairs will be done to that sinkhole. We havent been given a time when that will all happen. Just asking customers to be patient. And its a possibility that some businesses may not be able to open because they wont have gas. It really just depends on what they decide to do. Back to you. Janine, thank you. 7 05. Now. A deadly crash overnight near discovery bay. A car ended up in the creek off highway 4. The chp says two cars crashed head on. One car was forced off the road and into a creek. Three adults and three children were in that car. Witnesses say some Good Samaritans jumped into the water and rescued the three children. All the children are fine. Suffered minor injuries. Ben lohman over 18. Cazadero and the Russian River 15. San francisco 6. 24 officially. Thats pretty good. But its time for a little break. We are not completely done. There is a little bit in the south bay. Looks like its zipped on by. San jose has had some. Saratoga, los gatos as well, Santa Cruz Mountains. There is not a lot left. Occasionally some of this can cruise through. See the direction out of the west. Even though High Pressure is on the way, occasionally partly to mostly cloudies. It moves quick. So some lingering rain for today. Overall though we are looking for a pattern that shows some lingering rain and temperatures upper 50s, low 60s. All right. Alex, 7 31. Things picked up or gotten better on the screens . Depends where you are. You can say that about anything almost. True. Exactly. We are doing pretty good for much of the bay area. But as i glance over at the maps here, i want to first take you out here and show you a live picture on the bay bridge. The eastern span of the bay bridge because the traffic heading into the city looks particularly heavy. We saw some flashing lights a short time ago in one of the shots there. I am not showing any accidents or stalls or anything like that on span itself. But just keep in mind that even once you get past the backup at the toll plaza. Its going to be quite a slow ride across the eastern span of the bridge. To the south bay now. 280 and 880 in san jose, and there is thats pretty good traffic right now. I will show you on the maps the big picture. You do see the normal slowing there at highway 101 to the 880 interchange. Now let me slide the maps up here because i do want to show you we have one issue here than is, as i move the maps here, you can see traffic is beginning to build southbound 101. There is a big crash at grand avenue. It involves a big rig and maybe some other cars. The three right lanes are blocked. You can see that right where this crash is there, have you traffic building. That is southbound 101 at grand avenue. Three lanes are blocked. Be careful if you are heading through that area. You want to give yourself plenty of extra time. San francisco fire crews are still at 22nd and Mission Street where there was a big fire overnight in a vacant building. Ktvus allie rasmus, you have been out there since early this morning. The cause of the fire, thats just one of the questions investigators want answered . Reporter yes. The building were talking about, 22nd and mission, right here behind us on this corner, can you see there is a fire crew that has been out here since this fire started 11 30 last night. Now, the fire is completely out, but we have through the morning periodically seen firefighters getting access to the roof and checking out to make sure any hot spots dont flare up. Now, no one was living in the building when the fire broke out last night. The building itself has been vacant for more than a year and there was no gas or electricity connected to the building when the fire happened last night. So the cause of this fire is definitely under investigation. Again, it started 11 30. Took an hour and a half to get under control. People who live and worked in the area smelled the smoke and came out of their nearby apartments and bars to take the pictures and videos to post on social media. Firefighters kept the fire spreading to nearby buildings. Some people were evacuated as a precaution. Everyone was allowed to go back home. The building was vacant. It was boarded up. There shouldnt have been any heat source. Probably had squatters inside. Probably had some kind of heat source. Reporter now, the building was vacant because in january of last year a deadly and destructive fire happened right here in the same building. That fire a year ago killed one resident and injured seven others. 60 people who lived in the building were displaced. Last month a building inspector told the owner of the building to tear it down because of safety concerns and some of the tenants who previously lived here, they wanted the city to take over the building and convert it to affordable housing. In the next report, what the division chief had to say about the challenges the firefighters had in tackling this fire. Back to you guys. All right. Allie rasmus in San Francisco. Thank you. And now to the east bay where the storm caused a huge eucalyptus tree to come crashing down into the home of an 87yearold woman who lived in the Oakland Hills for 55 years. It landed in her laundry room and kitch am. Neilsen says she sand her family were always worried about the trees. She says the neighbor who owns that property never did anything about them. You know, all these years all we can do is look up, you know, and see them. Oh my gosh, they are really growing. We have enjoyed living here all these years. So im i am sorry it has to end this way. Here neighbors worry their homes may be next to be damaged by falling trees. They say the ground has been dry so long that the recent rain soaked in quickly and stay could be weakening other roots. In moraga a landslide forced two families out of their homes and one of the homes railing gave way in the foundation and floors have buckled. The municipal district owns the land below the homes. People who live in the area say the utility knew about erosion on the hillside for a while but didnt do anything about it. East bay mud says there is no way it could have prevented that slide. And while the Russian River isnt expected to flood, it is getting close. Take a look at the river flow near monte rio and guerneville. There were concerns over the weekend. The demolition in pacifica of an Apartment Building sitting on the edge of a crumbling cliff thats expected to be completed today. Crews are trying to get the job done before the next round of storms or gravity sends the building tumbling into the ocean. Ktvus brian flores is live in pacifica with some challenges the crews are facing. Reporter in terms. Rainstorm, i spoke with the superintendent moments ago. He said it was a positive and negative. Positive because it kept the dust down. Usually the workers spray water from hoses to keep the dust down. But in terms of this project, it was delayed several days. As you can see, this is whats left of 320 esplanade avenue here in pacifica. Really nothing more than a pile of debris. Crews began working on this on saturday. They recently brought in a couple of excavators strategically place sod it wouldnt be too close to the edge of the cliff. This cliff is very unstablable the complex was on the verge of falling below. Again, we spoke with the superintendent of this demolition crew. Says things are running smoothly besides a few minor challenges, including handling the Hazardous Material inside of the complex. The next difficult thing is we have to crane down and get the debris thats fallen over the side 100 feet below us in the rocks. So we have to gather all that debris and pull it up with a crane and remove it from the beach. Reporter now, the city says the buildings owner had opportunities over the years to shore up the cliff, but he decided not do so. Since then the build something a hazard to people who walk on the beach below, an environmental hazard to the ocean. The demolition costing more than 200,000 and the city of pacifica is looking at recouping that money from the owner who recently filed for bankruptcy. Officials say for the rest of the el nino season crews will be working to keep the cliff from eroding any further and making sure the utility lines underground are shored up as well. But as you take it back out live here again, crews are working on clearing out 320 esplanade. As you heard from the superintendent, after this work is done they are going to bring in a large crane to get the debris. So thats the next phase of it. In terms of timing when this will be completely cleared out, they say sometime on wednesday. In terms of the building right next door to it, those buildings have been yellow tagged. All right. Coming up we will have the latest on the investigation and a possibility cause for the fire. Plus, we are still tracking slow traffic in many spots around the bay area this morning. In particular, i want to show you the east bay commute and tell you about a clash is still being worked on in the walnut creek area coming up. Looks like a break from the rain. We have had plenty here. A good stretch in march and some totals of impressive. But next couple of days you can expect more sunshine. Welcome back to mornings on 2. 8 30. This morning San Francisco fire investigators searching for the cause of an overnight fire in a vacant building. That building was also the scene of a deadly fire last year. Ktvus allie rasmus reports work done after the earlier fire made it tougher for fire crews this morning. Reporter the fact that there had already been a fire in this same building more than year ago created unique challenges for firefighters last night. More on that in a minute. First the building where this happened. 22nd and mission. You can tell its a vacant building because the windows are boarded up. And the fire started here at 11 30 last night. It took an hour and a half to get under control. Ever since then there has been a fire crew on standby to check on hot spots. We have seen them periodically go up the ladder to check on the roof and make sure nothing flares back up again. Arson investigators were called out late last night. Thats always what is the protocol any time a fire goes to a second alarm. Now, people who live and work in the area smelled the smoke last night. They came out of nearby apartments and bars to take videos and pictures to post to social media. In 2013 a deadly and does strength tough fire happened in the same building. It killed one and injured seven others. Now, the building had been in disrepair ever since then. That made things tough for firefighters tackling the fire last night. All the doors were boarded up and windows were boarded up from the previous fire. We had it cut our way in. The stairwell was filled with debris. We couldnt make it through the interior stairwell. So we had to climb the fire escape and go in over the fire escape and make our entry that way. Reporter last month a building the inner told the told the opener of the building to tear it down because of safety concerns. Some of the tenants who lived here before that january 2015 fire had been asking the city to take over the building and convert to it affordable housing. The building had no electricity, no gas, no heat source inside. We are hoping to get an update from the Public Information officer who is expected to be out here a little later this morning. In San Francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2. We will check weather and traffic for you. Head back over to steve. Things are changing as we speak . It will be quieter this weekend, gasia and dave. Same for saratoga. Still you can see the airflow, the wind direction bringing in cloud cover. So we are not complete ledone. We are almost done. 40s on the temps. Santa rosa says, hey, we are cool at 43 degrees. Wife expect 30s i would expect 30s. West at 10. Thats not something we see. We see more of a south southeast breeze for a long time. High pressure will be here tomorrow. Clouds and sun. Could be lingering rain scooting through. Inland fog. Partly cloudy. Partly sunny. Chilly morning though. Upper 50s. Low 60s on the temps. Alex savidge has been busy. Sal will be back wednesday, is that correct . Thats my understanding. Yes. Sal is back. He will be well rested, i am sure. I would hope. Unlike the rest of us slogging through. That time change does a number on you. I know a lot of folks have been tweeting me and letting me know they are feeling the effects of the time change. Overall, pretty good looking traffic. I have one significant issue that we are still tracking over in the walnut creek area and you see it there on your screen. 680 southbound at treat boulevard. This is a crash that the chp and First Responders are working on. Its involving a motorcycle and car and it caused a pretty good backup there. Southbound 680 at treat boulevard. You can also see there on the map westbound 80 slow traffic out of the richmond area heading towards the macarthur maze. But it seems to be freeing up just a bit here as we move later in the morning. I will give you a live look here at the situation on eastshore freeway and you can see slow traffic there towards the maze and obviously you will experience pretty good backup getting up towards the toll plaza. But getting across the bay bridge, its actually a pretty good looking ride once you get onthe span itself. Now the san mateo bridge. That is looking pretty good overall across the across to the peninsula this morning. Its a pretty good looking ride. It slows just a bit past the toll plaza. Beyond that, you should be okay. 8 35 is the time. Gasia, over to you. Thank you. In oakland the home of an 87yearold woman was severely damaged by a falling tree. She has lived there 55 years now. Now there is a new report on the investigation and this is having an impact on Public Safety and privacy, pam. Yes. It is sparking a debate over doctorpatient confidentiality versus keeping the public safe. All 150 people on board that Germanwings Flight were killed when the plane slammed into the french alps. The investigation showed the copilot was fighting depression when he locked himself in the cockpit and deliberately flew the plane into a mountain. Now, this new report reveals a doctor recommended two weeks before that crash that the copilot should be checked into a psychiatric hospital. That information was not given to the airline because of doctorpatient confidentiality. The report was presented by a French Investigation Agency and recommends new rules that would require doctors to warn authorities when a pilots Mental Health could affect Public Safety. This is why i think that more specific clear regulations are necessary to explain when doctors could be required to break secret medical records to preserve public security, in particular when pilots or people are carrying passengers. The report also recommendation more regular evaluations of pilots with histories of mental illness, and investigators are suggesting european governments encourage pilots to be more open about what antidepressant medications they are taking. The report states that the 27yearold pilot had notes from two different doctors stating he should be off work and he was given anti antidepressants. Neither doctor had informed the airline.
