Public pressure proved too great following the latest officerinvolved shooting in which a Police Sergeant shot and killed a 20yearold stolen car suspect, she was African American and apparently unarmed. Reporter suhr has not yet commented from hisdeparture, a 30 year veteran the San Francisco Police Department. A number of officers told ktvu he is a great leader and say they are sad hes gone. The mayor and Police Commission will now begin a nationwide search for San Franciscos next top cop aol though a number of officers within the department say they dont want to see an outsider brought here but that could happen. Greg suhr was the chief since 2011, ousted yesterday. Suhr came up through the ranks, a longtime captain of the bay view station but he has faced mounting pressure and growing protests over several controversial shootings by officers, including the killing of mario woods. Yesterdays deadly shooting in the bay view seemed to force the mayors hand. He asked for the chiefs resignation. The department will now begin to look for new permanent replacement for suhr. City leaders say it must be someone who reforms the department and repair strained relationships with minority communities. Do you think it takes bold and courageous leadership with a fresh slate that is able to extend their hand and be able to unite all of our community. In this solemn moment, we have to, we must put aside politics and begin to heal the city. After yesterdays announcement, the Police Officers association put out a statement praising the ousted police chief. Here is the man who will replace greg suhr, interim chief toneey cha palestine. The Police Association statement said, his retirement under pressure is an extremely loss to the department and the city as well. Chief suhr at the core was and always will be a cops cop and dedicated to the men and women who don the uniform every day to serve and pro tech. Suhrs resignation, we understand, was quite devastating to many within the department. Many officers tell ktvu he was well liked, highly respect, was there with the department a long time and many people are sad to see him go. Alex, thanks. In the meantime, last night a big crowd gathered at the scene of yesterdays shooting in the Bay View District. You can see them here. They held signs and flowers in memory of the 27yearold woman who was shot. The Police Report says that officers spotted her in a stolen car about 9 45 yesterday morning and that she sped away crashing into a truck. One witness says that as police moved in to detain her, she started revving the car going back and forth. Thats when the Police Sergeant fired one shot killing her. Among other things, investigators want to know if that sergeant was trying to protect his partner. Black women are being gunned down and we are not telling our whole story, if we are not telling our whole story, then we cannot achieve full liberation. This was the third Deadly Police shooting in San Francisco in the past six months. Remember, mario woods was killed in a confrontation in december and luis gongoria, a homeless man who had a knife was shot and killed last month. The mayor announced he will add two more San Francisco Police Academy classes this year trying to hire 100 more officers over the next couple of years. Inside bay area reports that the number of Million Dollar homes has quadrupled. Half of the Housing Inventory in the bay area city are in that seven figure range.
