KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am August 11, 2016

A few 60s. Leaving behind 60s, 70s by water. 80s, 90s inland. Sal, 7 01. What do you have . I have a macarthur maze issue, steve. I wanted to show you the macarthur maze and the bay bridge toll plaza because we have a commute that has become very slow. One of the reasons why its become slow, there were a couple of earlier incidents on the bridge on the San Francisco side of the span that were cleared, but the traffic is very slow. Its slower than usual. Look at that stopandgo traffic. Thats a sign the metering lights were on, very slow at the toll plaza bees and toll plaza, and you are waiting for a bit. If you are in one of the regular cash lanes, it varies of course. This is a terrible commute into San Francisco. The accidents were not that serious, but they caused delays. These delays tend to multiply as the morning goes on. A live look now from our toll plaza camera, and you can see the traffic is not moving very well through this area at all. We have been taking a close look at the san mateo and at the dumbarton bridges as alternates. The san mateo bridge is very heavy as a lot of people have figured this out. They are heading over there. Getting over to the dumbarton on 880 is going to be slow. A word to the wise. Barts a good option and you also could add extra time to your commute. San Francisco Police are searching for a killer after a mans body was discovered inside the westfield Shopping Center. Ktvus alex savidge live now with the clues investigators have to go on here. Alex. Reporter good morning to you. First off, the San Francisco police are going over Surveillance Footage from the mall. As you can well imagine there are a lot of cameras in and around this building here. Now, that body was discovered near an entrance to the Shopping Center thats just down this alleyway here. This is jesse street near the intersection of mission and 4th. Now, take a look at some video. This discovery was made after 10 00 in the morning yesterday, and police will only say that the victim in this case was a white man in his 30s. The medical examiner ruled that the man was the victim of a homicide. Its unclear though exactly how he was killed. The body reportedly was found in a mall stairway. We did see some crews yesterday in that area doing some clean up work. Now, one man who works nearby told us this morning that he saw this scene yesterday, and police had the entire alleyway blocked off. A lot of stuff happens around here every day. So, yeah, dont like to see that because i work here. It makes you a little nervous when you see someone killed. Doesnt make you feel comfort. You another, its the city. Reporter its unclear at this point who exactly discovered the body or alerted the police. We also dont know what condition the victim was in or how long he had been in that spot. But again police are working, going over Surveillance Footage from the Shopping Center, also talking to witnesses and trying to get some leads in this investigation and hopefully identify the person responsible for this killing. Gasia. And alex, i was in that area yesterday around market and powell. No sign of anything happening in the areas where people usually go to that mall. Reporter yeah. You know, this is sort of tucked away here. Frankly, i come here to the Shopping Center from time to time as well. This is not one of the entrances i have come in, ive used in the past, but it is an entrance tucked at the back end of this alleyway. There is a Public Entrance in that area, but not where you usually see visit he is going in and out. To the south bay where police are searching for a woman suspected of kidnapping her baby son. Investigators say she vanished july nine the day she was told she no longer had custody of the bay bridge. Authorities believe pernell and the baby boy are in Santa Clara County. They say daeveion has a serious medical condition and needs treatment but they wont be more specific. We dont know yet. We dont know the extend of the severity of his medical issues and we are desperate to find out. San jose police say pernell may be driving an older silver fourdoor hyundai with california license plate 6bxn572. Officials say pernell also uses the last name clark. Time is now 7 05. Developing news from maryland where fire Officials Say as many as seven people are still unaccounted for after a huge fire at an apartment complex overnight. That fire destroyed at least two Apartment Buildings in silver spring, maryland. Several people were rescued from the upper floors. More than 30 people were hurt. Most of them jumped out of windows to get away from those flames. Three firefighters were also hurt. The fire chief says search crews are going to stay out there through the day. Crews will be in the area for quite an extended period of time today dealing with the search and our efforts to locate those five to seven folks and determine their whereabouts and conditions. The fire chief says the fire station a mild away heard an explosion before getting a call for help. More than 160 fire and rescue crews responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Federal and Contra Costa County agents say there was an arrest of several gang members. They seized guns, drugs, cars, and a speed boat along with 15,000. Some of the suspects are believed to be responsible for some of the shootings along highway 4 that started last year. Antiochs police chief says interagency cooperation is what made this operation a success. By working collaboratively, getting these individuals in custody, the fbi was involved in these arrests. The 24 arrested will face murder, attempted murder and drugs and weapons charges in state court. We will be talking more about this case and what comes next coming up on the 9 with henry lee. A Police Sergeant in San Franciscos tenderloin station is among the first of 70 San Francisco Police Officers to wear the departments new body cameras out on the street. Sergeant john conway says there are some activation issues and the cameras dont always capture everything the officers suspect. Overall, the sergeant says he looks forward to help train the rest of the police force on how to use these new cameras. The goal is to increase accountability from a police force that has been criticized for the shooting deaths of three people since last december. In an hour San Franciscos acting police chief Toney Chaplin will address prominent religious and Community Leaders talking about Public Safety and about his desire to be the Permanent Police chief. Reverend aimous brown will be hearing from chief chaplin. Last week reverend brown appeared on ktvu. We will have live coverage of this mornings meeting in our next hour on mornings on 2. Time is 7 08. Everyone knows the cost of living in the bay area is very high. Housing costs are a main reason for that. Ktvus janine de la vega live in palo alto where a former city official is now publicly criticizing the lack of leadership the city provides in this aspect. Janine. Reporter gasia, this woman, she posted her Resignation Letter online, and some people are empathizing with her, but some disagree with her saying that the good schools justify the high cost of living. We are talking about kate downing. She was a member of palo altos planning and Transportation Commission and she told the city her family can no longer afford to live in palo alto and they are moving to santa cruz. This isnt the first time we have reported about the lack of Affordable Housing in palo alto. We followed the story of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park where the residents were fighting to keep it from closing because it was the only affordable place they could find in the city. Downing says she rents a home with another couple for 6,200 a month and they wanted to buy the home. The minimum wage would be more than 12,000 a month. Heres what many people said about what downing had posted in her letter. I think there is a lot of longtime families and people who have grown up and lived in this area and they are being pushed out. I get that there is a lot of great opportunity and innovation in this area but we are not doing anything to cultivate the communities that were originally here and that really makes she very sad. Reporter and there are others who dont agree with her, saying if people want to live in palo alto they need to work harder. Now, downing says she has seen dozens of people come to city meetings asking the city council to make housing a top priority, but downing says the council has ignored that request and in her letter she is critical of city Officials Say they are not addressing housing. We have reached out to downing and we are still waiting to hear back from her. Hopefully, we will within the next hour. Thank you. In the meantime, the south Bay Real Estate market has crossed the Million Dollar mark. The National Association of realtors issued the latest report on median home prices in the metro area which includes san jose, sunnyvale and santa clara. Its a jump of 10 . The high cost of housing is the topic for our question of the day. Many people are doing whatever they can to make it work. We want to know, what are you doing to make it in the bay area . Are you working two, maybe three jobs . Choosing to do staycations instead of big vacations . Let us know what you are doing make it work by posting a comment to our ktvu Facebook Page or tweet us. All right. If you are caught in the morning commute, listen to this. A state lawmaker from glendale wants california to use technology that may be able to power millions of cars as they drive over tiny little sensors installed in the road. Its already being used in israel and japan. The sensors about the size of a quarter or a tiny watch battery. Supporters say the power would be generated from the vibration of a car going over the road. Could use your roads to generate power. That power could be sold and god forbid we pave those roads. Governor brown vetoed the original bill to pay for this technology. The California Energy Commission Said they wanted to at least check it out. There are now several pilot programs underway. Supporters say caltrans could sell the power to homes that are near highways and lease freeways to power generating utility companies. Thieves targeting pokemon go players in berkeley. In minutes the advice from police as this type of crime is becoming more and more common. Another controversial comment from donald trump and Hillary Clinton is about to release her economic plan. We will have the latest from the campaign trail next. This morning we have a tough bay bridge commute, and that is beginning to affect other commutes like this one on eastshore freeway. We will tell you a little bit more about that straight ahead. Pretty good fog bank out there, but it is coming down the bases. High pressure isled abouting High Pressure is building in. More on that coming up. Welcome back to mornings on 2. In Donald Trumps Campaign Appearance yesterday in florida he blamed president obama for the rise of isis in iraq and syria. Isis is honoring president obama. He is the founder of isis. He is the founder of isis. Okay . He is the founder. He founded isis. Now, trump also called Hillary Clinton the cofounder of isis. So far the white house has not responded to trumps accusations. Meantime, today in michigan Hillary Clinton will take aim the Donald Trumps economic plan. At a speech at a Manufacturing Company she is going to call his proposals to cut taxes and regulations the trump loophole for the rich. Now, clintons economic plan includes investing in public works projects and creating more educational opportunities. She also adds that more republicans are being turned off by donald trump and is supporting her. Humbled and moved by the republicans who are willing to stand up and say that donald trump doesnt represent their values. In other news, some newly released emails are raising questions about the close relationship between the state department with Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and the clinton foundation. A Watchdog Group says a Foundation Official lobbied the state department to hire a close friend. We watched a bizarre scene unfolded in new york city yesterday as a 20yearold man climbed up trump tower in new york with suction cups. He made it 21 floors up as a huge crowd gathered below. There was a Massive Police response as officers deployed large airbags underneath as a precaution. They removed parts of the windows to talk with the climber. Finally, they were able to pull him inside, essentially grabbed him as he was climbing and pulled him through a window. You are watching that happen right now. There are two officers leaning over the ledge, grabbing hold of the climber, who does not want to let go of the suction cups, but eventually that climber is pulled in by those officers. After talking with him, police said the man told them he just wanted to meet donald trump. At no time did he express he wanted to hurt anybody. His sole intention was to meet with mr. Trump. Took three hours to get him in custody. He explained the same thing, that he wanted mr. Trumps attention and he wanted a meeting with him. Now, donald trump has a home and an office in that building. The tower serves as his campaign headquarters, but donald trump wasnt there yesterday. He was campaigning in virginia and florida. One of the most beautiful monuments in the nations capitol is getting some attention for an unwanted reason. The appearance of the Jefferson Memorial there, its changing. The National Parks service says bacteria is forming, creating a biofilm on the soft marble surface of the memorial. Now, Power Washing or bleaching it would hurt it. They are testing other possible treatments on one side of the building. So far scientists cant agree on what caused the problem or the best way to clean it up and fix it. Time is 7 18. Lets help get you out the door. We have one major problem, and how is that affecting everything else, sal . Well, it is that problem with the bay bridge that youre mentioning, gasia and dave, and that is because of earlier issues. Its very slow at the bay bridge. Right now we are going to show you a picture of the carquinez bridge to macarthur maze commute. Taking almost 40 minutes, and thats directly because of the traffic at the bay bridge has been so busy. Its beginning to effect a lower eastshore traffic and also going to be slowing traffic at the macarthur maze. So when you get to the bay bridge, you will be waiting there for about a half hour. Maybe even 40 minutes as well because of the earlier accidents. The bridge lanes are clear, but a backup developed on the span, and then they had to clear that out and turn the metering lights on extra slow. Today is the morning where you have to give yourself an extra ten or 15 minutes or you might want to decide to go bart or use the carpool lanes, get into a legitimate door pool and use that instead. Lets take a look at some other commutes. On the peninsula we had some slow traffic because of an earlier accident at menlo park. Thats gone. If you are driving into the Silicon Valley, northbound 101, 280 to 85, those are moderate commutes. Thats more of a normal looking commute getting into sunnyvale, cupertino and palo alto. 7 19. Lets go to steve. Sal. Yes . You notice that fog getting a little bit lower through the morning . Thats right. Whats going on with that . The warmer air is coming in aloft. I see. Starting to squash it a little bit. Thank you. Some areas are already clear. Some fog has made it even for some inland areas. It is pretty thick here. Some reports of really reduced visibility. San jose a little haze there. Temperatures are poised to start warming up away from the coast. If it isnt today, it will definitely be tomorrow. A foggy morning friday. Warmer inland. It does look warm to hot for some away from the coast as we head into the weekend. Fog is there. Plenty up and down the coast. Some has moved inland, more so in the east bay. Westsouthwest, westsouthwest, north, west of napa. Saw some gusts earlier 25 port chicago and chicago. Southeast breeze all week long in the santa clara valley. That continues today for some. 30s, 40s, 50s to 70s. 70 up in redding. 37 truckee to 39 south lake tahoe. Incline warmer at 51. Norton warmer at 58 degrees. In the desert southwest, down in Southern California thats some fog. Thats it. Big time thunderstorms erupted yesterday phoenix, scottsdale. Any travel plans there, they are dealing with a lot of moisture. Same for new mexico and also now up into colorado and even into utah. The system has pushed that out of california. We dont have to worry about that. The fog is definitely starting to thicken up a little bit and thats going to translate into reduced visibility i think the next couple of nights and mornings. 60s to 90s. Inland 90s. Closer to the coast, 60s and 70s. By the wa
