KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am March 4, 2017

And more important, will you unplug today . I guess today is national unplug day. Yes, kind of dont want you to unplug during our show and we want to maybe make you still plug into some of our apps because we have weather coming, but, yeah, frank is on his phone right now. Can he put it down . Can you put it down . Do you want to put it down . I like to give myself a little bit of time. Not only put it down, lock it up. Put it away. Whats the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning . Check my phone, sure. Ktvu live stream or check my e mail or, yeah, check the weather. Alexa, whats in the news and ktvu tells me. Its hard to stay unplugged. Its tough. Today is the national day if you care to partake. Yeah. Until sunset tonight. Byebye. If you are hoping to maybe get outside and ditch the electronics, well, bring along the umbrella. Giving you a live look here at what is going on. We are covered in clouds this morning, partly sunny, plowed, we will see partly cloudy, we will see an increase in cloud cover, chance for rain coming our way. Already seeing a little bit of wet weather here on this screen, as we look towards San Francisco this morning, over the oakland estuary and you can see our lens there has a little bit of water on it. Right now San Francisco 51, 43 santa rosa, oakland 54, upper 40s livermore as well as san jose, because of the cloud cover, temperatures are up by 10 degrees in oakland, by 14 in livermore, so fur getting out, you may notice doesnt feel as chilly, although we dont have as much sunshine out there and again stormtracker 2 showing you showing you we are mainly dry at the moment but more on the way. For the first half of the day calling for scattered showers but by the evening hours it is going to pick up. Heres a look as we roll through your morning hours, notice a lot of cloud cover, a few sprinkles embedded within this cloud cover as well as we get into the second half of the day, it picks up just a little bit. But really it looks like about the dinner hour, 4 00, 5 00, its over the north bay and then as we slide into 7 00 notice we have a pretty good band of rain here that moves to the central, south bay by 9 00, 10 00 its into the areas of the south bay and then pushing out with scattered showers remaining in the forecast. If youre headed to the sierra, there are advisories in place for the west slope as well as for tahoe today, detail this more when we come back as well as what you can expect here at home, how long this wet weather is going to last and how much rainfall i expect we will get coming up. Sounds good. Thanks so much, rosemary. Go to the Traffic Alert we are watching in the peninsula, an Early Morning crash blocking a major road happening in menlo park. And theres no word yet on when that road might reopen. Christien kafton joins us live from menlo park with more on that. Good morning. Reporter yeah, good morning frank and claudine. One lane of bay front expressway just reopened. Just now starting to let traffic flow through. You can see that there is a tow truck, they have just started towing away a white vehicle that was in the ditch. That was at least one of the vehicles that was involved in this incident. Menlo park police shutting down bay front near willow with one of the main access routes to the dumbarton bridge at around 4 00 this morning, sometime before 4 00 this incident happened. Not clear at this point on just how serious that accident was, how many injuries or what exactly happened out here, including how many vehicles were involved. Now, as we were here, we saw just the one white sedan that was in the ditch. At this point, though, still having a major traffic impact. You can see that two of the three lanes on bay front expressway closed down at this time. They are just now starting to reopen to allow vehicles to make their way towards the dumbarton bridge. Menlo park police still out here investigating this incident, investigating this accident, we are trying to find out more information about this incident including who was involved, what may have happened out here, the extent of the injuries. But at this point it does look as if they are beginning the process of clearing this accident. The latest estimate that we had was they hoped to have all three lanes of the bay front expressway open by 8 00 this morning. We are hoping to talk with Menlo Park Police to get more detail on that and also get a better time line on when all three lanes will be reopened, frank and claudine. We will keep an eye on it. Thanks so much. And new this morning, explosive accusations from President Trump, in a series of tweets he accused former president obama of a watergate plot to hack his phone at campaign headquarters. The first tweet said terrible, found out obama had my wires tapped at trump tower before the victory. Nothing found. This is mccarthyism. A followup tweet, is it legal for a sitting president to be tapping a race for president ial prior to an election, a new low. The last tweet said how low has president obama gone to tap my phones during the election process. This is nixon watergate bad or sick guy. It appears President Trump is referring to an article yesterday in the conservative website, bright breitbart which claimed that the Obama Administration asked the intelligence court last year to monitor communications and a computer server at trump tower due to possible links with russian banks. No evidence was found. A spokesman for former president obama has not responded for a comment. And the city of berkeley is bracing for what may be dueling demonstrations later today. A rally in support of President Trump is planned as well as a counter protest and both happening at Civic Center Park. Ktvus Deborah Villalon reports police are aware the two groups could clash. Reporter the plaza outside city hall is always a scene, a mix of the best and worst berkeley has to offer. On saturday homeless folks make way for the Farmers Market and something more. Its a handful of, you know, Tea Party Types waving their flags, whatever, it is no big deal. Reporter protest groups arent sure what to expect from the march for trump event, a show of support for the new administration. The local gathering billed as the freedom march on berkeley has a few hundred people expressing interest on facebook, but the makeup of the crowd, even their opponents arent sure. We are coming out and we are hopefully coming out in big numbers to make clear that if youre a white supremacist or a neonazi, youre not welcome here in berkeley. Reporter on the edge of the plaza the Police Department which has been making plans to keep the two factions apart and the afternoon peaceful. Neither group applied for a permit so planning is vague. We will see who comes and how they come and we will be ready, preparing for a number of different contingencies. Reporter worst case scenario, fullon fighting like the scene in sacramento last summer when white nationalists tried to march at the State Capitol but were met head on by hundreds of protesters. Several people went to hospitals with stab wounds. Will this get physical . Its not up to us. Its if the fascists are here to attack people, the movement is going to defend itself. Reporter a statement from the local pro trump organizer promises a peaceful march and disavows neo nazis writing if they come they will be ejected immediately. They are not welcome to this event. This is not a fascist gathering. Still, the prospect of two warring camps coming face to face has this cafe, a block away, shutting down for the day. The owner plans to open for the evening theater crowd once the protests are gone. Hes more concerned with the clashes and if everything doesnt turn out so good, hes afraid that people might get angry and violent. He doesnt want any of the windows to be broken down. The march for trump is supposed to run from 2 00 until 6 00, the counter protest is scheduled to start at noon at the mlk Civic Center Park in berkeley. Time now is 7 09. Fran police are asking for the publics help in finding a man who is accused of trying to rob a china town Jewelry Store. Police releasing this High Resolution image of the suspect, all of them were recorded by surveillance cameras along grant avenue. Investigators say the man wore a hoodie, a surgical mask and then tried to rob the luck fu Jewelry Store there. An assistant manager tells us the suspect tried to break display cases with a hammer but couldnt because it is made with a special material. It happened at noontime, right at lunchtime, a lot of people out on the streets and this probably is quite brazen because the suspect goes into the store and even knocks over one of the employees before trying to commit the robbery. The assistant store manager says the suspect was seen on the street watching the business for about 10 minutes before rushing in and then ordering three workers to the ground, described as 20 to 25 years of age with a slender build. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. An in Santa Cruz Police help surveillance images will help them catch a bank robber here. A man dressed in black storms into the u. S. Bank about 1 00 in the afternoon. Jumped over the counter, pointed a gun at the employees at the bank and demanded money. The tellers complied and the robber left with an undisclosed amount of cash, all stuffed inside a black bag. While his face was covered, witnesses say he looked to be in his 20s, 59 tall with a medium build. Two Santa Clara County correctional deputies arrested and two in two unrelated cases according to the San Jose Mercury news, deputy leonel grobea was arrested for allegedly hitting an inmate in the face without justification and Sergeant Robert little was arrested or lightle, rather, was arrested on suspicion of making a secrets recording of the supervisor and trying to get them to Say Something they could use as leverage in the future. Both men are free on bail. Santa clara county Sheriffs Office releasing a statement that says in part arresting one of your own is never a proud moment but in these circumstances its necessary to maintain the communitys trust and integrity of the Sheriffs Office. Pse g is blaming pg e gas leak in a san jose neighborhood. A gas line ruptured yesterday and it forced people in three homes to evacuate. Residents in 10 other homes had to shelter in place. A landscaper first noticed the natural gas line buckling the pavement. It sent dirt and debris in the air. Residents could smell the strong ordore of natural odor of natural gas. The utility says this neighborhood is up in the East Foothills and its prone to sliding. Erosion from recent storms likely damaged the underground line. This neighborhood has several active faults which means it sees more Land Movement than any other areas and with the recent storms in the saturated and the saturated soil, any Significant Movement can compromise underground facilities. Pg e says a 4inch steel line had ruptured. Crews turned off the gas to 20 customers and then service was restored last night. Coming up fbi agents taking a man into custody in connection with threats against Jewish Centers all across the country. In our next half hour, we will tell you what we have learned about the suspect and a possible motive behind those threats. Giving you a live look there over the east bay where the clouds are covering up this morning and rain is on the way. Ill have a look at what you can expect for your bay area weekend coming up. Thank you, rosemary. Crews at the oroville dam have restarted part of that power lant with all the water that overspilled earlier last month. Still a mess. That allowed the hiatt power plant to be turned back on yesterday. Getting the power plant online allows the release of water behind the dam without sending it over the spillway. People plan to unplug from their phones and social media today. They pledge not to use the web or any digital device for the annual national day of unplugging. It started yesterday, lasts until sundown today. Organizers say its about seeing what you have been missing in the real world. People have been posting photos of themselves with signs on social media to show how they plan to spend their time while they are unplugged. I think its funny. You get the you see them with their chalkboards so they go back to the basics and they have to do it with their digital phone and take a picture and then put it on facebook. They are like, look, we are on chalkboards and also on social media and i did take this picture with my phone. It is very hard these days to get unplugged. Embrace the rain today, maybe put your phone away. Maybe read a book, take a walk, watch a movie. People read books on their phone. Yes, watch movies on their phones. You put the phone away and you go, gosh, what did you do before phones . I know. Or smartphones, i guess i should say. Smartphones. A bit of a challenge. And will rain keep us inside today . Rain could especially as we get into the evening hours. Out and about for your dinner hour, be aware, its going to be picking up and its going to be a little bit more steady as we get into the evening hours. Outside our doors right now, waking up with a cloudy start over oakland and just a few sprinkles reported here and there but you can see from stormtracker 2 the bay area still mainly dry, the main band of rain still to the north of us and it looks like its just north of areas of ukiah along fort bragg with we are seeing fort bragg we are seeing a few scattered showers here. Could be mountain could get Cobb Mountain could get out a little bit of snow out of here. A winter storm warning for the west slope all the way down to about 3000 feet. We are talking a few inches down to about blue canyon and below that and then as we get into the Higher Elevations by the end of the weekend, we could see two to 3 feet above 7000 feet. So thats going to be another good storm for the sierra. Meanwhile, the Flood Warning continues in lake port as well. Flood stage about 9 feet and it has not receded below that yet so flooding continues there. Take a look at the system that will come in later today, as we get into the 5 00 hour, thats the main band of rain so expected scattered showers as we get into the afternoon but the main band of rain will move into the north bay, it looks right about dinnertime, then by 7 00, 8 00 its sweeping across the central bay and then as we get into 9 00, 10 00 its into the south bay and then behind it we have scattered showers, here we are into sunday morning, we get a second round on sunday and then looks like monday morning could actually be a bit wet as we start out the morning drive and then we dry out and then we are done but its going to take us a few days. Heres a look at what you can expect with today. We are looking at, oh, a little bit less than quarter inch for most areas. As we get into your sunday night, now up to about a third of an inch. And all said and done we are looking at 1 2 or less for most areas. Some of the north bay, some of our hills will pick up more than that but 1 2 or less for most of our urban areas over the course of the next few days. Temperaturewise, 43 degrees right now in santa rosa, 52 in San Francisco and 49 for san jose, afternoon highs for today, on the cool side, upper 50s to low 60s, 57 San Francisco, 59 in oakland and the extended forecast here, again, showers developing this morning, turning into rain, scattered showers a little rain in the forecast for sunday, a chance on monday before we dry out, its going to be cool out there. We are talking low to mid50s for the afternoon on sunday. Still winter. As we get into wednesday, thursday, we are back to the upper 60s, so we are going to bounce back and forth a little while as we get closer to spring. Should i put an extra dog on my sled going up to the sierra tomorrow . Yes, youre going to need it. Really a tough way up, i guess. Yeah, when they put out the advisories, they are specifically for the drivers saying like be prepared for that of all days and on monday its going to snow like a son of a gun. Its all good.
