KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 7am June 20, 2017

Hot today or you would say it feels cooler. You take the dog out. It feels cooler. Christopher says it looks like the fog is trying to come in over San Francisco. It is. It is a beautiful morning. I agree. Most locations have a more of a marine influence fog. Cooler for most. 60s, 70s, 80s, coast and bay. 100s inland but cooled off most inland locations to mid to upper 90s. Theres a lot of fog, especially San Francisco south patchy. There is a west southwest breeze at the delta. Nothing too strong. 50sand 60s. Temperatures running a little cooler. Anywhere from a couple degrees to five to six for some. If it feels cooler, it is compared to a few hours ago. Now it looks like a northerly breeze on the sonoma coast. On shore for many all the way down to southern california. Peninsula temps 50s and 60s. Redwood city 60. Menlo park at 59 degrees. Slight cooldown today. What about tomorrow . Ill talk about that in ten minutes. There will still be 100s but you have to be far inland. Sal, 7 02. What is on the screens, my friend. Were looking at the bay bridge toll plaza and everything in between. We will start off with interstate 280 driving in from downtown to your job in sunnyvale or cupertino. You will see some slow traffic here. And it stays that way. I can show you the maps and show you the traffic is going to be slow on 280 west going into the west valley. 101 and 85, which is not unusual but we thought we might get a little bit of a break. 880 between hayward and union city is slow. San mateo bridge slows across. Something that is a new slowdown in the last year or so, it has become pronounced would be southbound 680 coming down towards the fremont area. This is the east shore freeway. It is slow all the way down to berkeley. By the time you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, we do have about a 20, maybe a 25minute delay before you make it on to the span. Back to the desk. Thank you, sal. The power is out for 2,000 pg e customers in the bay area. In the meantime the heat wave is causing a surge in demand for electricity especially as you know for airconditioning. Cal iso issued a flex alert for today and tomorrow. Ktvus Leigh Martinez staying cool at the home depot in concord. People are buying anything to help them stay cool. Good morning, leigh. Reporter good morning, dave. I have bad news. They sold out of fans and air conditioners over the weekend. It has picked up some speed and there was no breeze out there. Im nice and comfortable right now. I run cool. But home depot sold out over the weekend of air conditioners and fans. They got an emergency shipment in on monday. Well, that has sold out. They have gotten calls from people asking for air conditioners and they have to tell them they dont have them and theyre not sure when the next shipment will be back in. For san rafael and concord, it has been 12 years since they experienced this kind of heat. The high temperatures and solar radiation overheats the system, making it lessee fishent. Add to that the demand to run the electricity, mostly for air conditioning units and we have the potential for a blackout. We havent experienced temperatures like that in quite some time. A longer heat event is, the more problematic it can be from a number of perspectives. Reporter although California Independent system operator believes it can meet the Energy Demand this week, it wants to avoid the potential for blackouts. Homes and businesses are being asked to conserve energy between 2 00 this afternoon to 9 00 at night this afternoon. Turn off all lights, electric devices and equipment not in use. Wait until 9 00 to use large appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers and adjust the airconditioning unit if you have one to 78 degrees. Back out here live, we were told that they are trying to get another shipment of air conditioners in. But they do have some of those units already on hold. So just going to be another hot one. And youre going to have to be a little more creative if you cant get an air conditioner or a fan to cool yourself off today. Wow. Leigh martinez, thank you. The time is 7 05. Here are the latest power outage numbers from pg e. 1800 around the bay have no lek trace. In the south bay, 1350 customers, most in san jose. 451 customers without power in the north bay. 42 homes and businesses in the east bay have no power. No outages in San Francisco or on the peninsula. If you are heading to the coast for a cooldown, officials warn people to be careful. Fire crews from alameda and contra costa counties were called in to help battle the flames. A shelter in place was issued for parts of the neighborhood when that fire started. Then it moved. It moved back again. So they came down quicklyand told us to evacuate. The flames burned several acres above the schools football stadium. As a precaution, the campus was closed yesterday. But the fire did not damage the school. Still no word on how that fire started. The largest active fire in california continues to burn northeast of big bear. The socold holcomb fired started in the San Bernardino national forest. So far it has burned 850 acres and 0 containment. The San Bernardino county Sheriffs Office says several campgrounds were also evacuated and sections of highway 189 were closed. Fire crews brought in a night flying air attack to try to battle the fire overnight. The time is now 7 08. It is brutally hot in the southwest. That will continue today. In fact American Airlines has canceled dozens of flights out of phoenix. Temperatures expected to reach 120 degrees today in the phoenix area. American Airlines Says smaller jets just cant properly take off when it is so hot. The problem is the air is less dense and some of the planes need too much runway just to get off the ground. Dont forget you can get all of the latest information about the heat wave by downloading ktvus wealth app. We will give you updates on ktvu. Com and on our facebook and twitter pages. The time is 7 17 on the clock. Time to head to sal and see how the traffic is behaving in this morning commute. Hello there, sal. Good morning, Claudine Wong and dave clark. Yep. Were going to start at highway 17. I keep starting there because it is very slow. This is somewhat unusual for it to be this slow this early coming around the corner into the west valley. Im not sure what well, i guess im sure what is going on. Everybody is going to work at the same time. 101 is slow. We havent had a lot of crashes along the way. Weve had some. I can show you the traffic is going to be affected by some of these crashes. But for the most part, it is just slow traffic. This say look at interstate 880 as you drive from hayward down into fremont. 680 is very slow. This freeway here has become kind of a chore for people pleasing pleasanton heading down to fremont and the south bay. Down to 7 Miles Per Hour on some of the stretches here. 80 westbound is also slow. The bay bridge, we dont have much too there. There is the bay bridge toll plaza camera. I assume it will come around the fourth of july when people are away. It hasnt come yet. Can i share something on that. Yes. A good friend of ours, max, he has a restaurant. He told me that he used to take august off. He says now everything is different. Schools start earlier, people come back earlier. Youre seeing something similar to that. It used to be june, july august. We had light traffic. We dont get it anymore. He said the same thing. Shoutout for max. Very good tennis player. He really is. We will play sometime, max. Trust me. We will get to it here. A little bit of a cooldown today. You know, if youre in the Restaurant Business or something, you can maybe write us and tell us is that true . Brutal for everybody. Late sunday night, early monday morning, we had thunderstorms roll through. You can see them going crazy over the sierra. What the heck happened here . There wasnt moisture coming up from the spine of the sierra which is what you usually see in the monsoon season. You will get advanced notice. You have to remember theres a tremendous amount of snow in some of the higher elevations. You get tremendous heat like we had, you get rapid evaporation, you get cooling, condensing, tremendous lapse rates as well and a trigger in the atmosphere. The flow around the high took a lot of the moisture. It came up from the east southeast. Yesterday there were still some. Things have calmed down because the pattern has changed. The high repositioned itself. Thats why we had the cloud cover and the humidity and the rapid evaporation over the sierra. Make sense . I hope so. Dont see that very often where you get temperatures 90 degrees with a decent snow pack up in tahoe. Thats what tahoe was yesterday, 90 degrees. Theres not a lot on the delta breeze. But it is there. 50s and 60s on the temps. Most locations running cooler. It wont take long to warm up away from the coast. Concord, livermore, minus 5 in san jose. The fog continues to ramp up, especially south of about point reyes. North of that, there is a slight off shore breeze. Then south of that, theres a lot of fog with more of an on shore. Same for southern california. Dealing with the june gloom. 60 gilroy. Morgan hill 58. Mid60s santa clara valley. It looks cooler today. The problem or the issue, i should say, the high. Instead of being over land as we had on sunday and monday, it is easing off. It will reposition itself off shore. As it does, starting on wednesday, we will start to get a little northerly breeze. If everything comes in as advertised, a northeast. As you know if youve lived here long enough, that means it could get very hot on thursday. Then a gradual cooling trend taking us into the weekend and next week. Today, 60s to 100s. Up in lake county and vacaville, contra costa. Others, livermore, should come down a few degrees. Four or five. Same for san jose. East san jose yesterday was 99. I dont think it will be that hot today. 93, 94. 60s on the coast. Upper 70s on the peninsula. Tomorrow, a little warmer.
