KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am February 1, 2016

Security clearances and badges and cards and that sort of thing. We feel safe. We are so happy to be here. You can come see us. There was a lady who came by. Here is my story about getting here this morning. You took the ferry. You and i took bart from oakland. How many times was this guy recognized on bart . I cant even count. You have to say hi to the people. What was it like taking the system upon which you report every day . Its a lot more crowded. I am sitting there in the studio doing traffic and people are doing it and taking bart. Very crowded. The ferries have been crowded. Yeah. We are going to talk about transportation in a minute because youre going to help break to down. But first we have to talk super bowl. Yeah. We have our reporters spread out. Janine de la vega is outside the s. A. P. Center where there is a big night tonight with the media day. We will check in with her in labor day. First lets talk to scott with the broncos outside the santa clara marriott. Good morning, scott. Reporter good morning, mike. And, yeah, we had to make the command decision on whether to set up shop first at the broncos team hotel or the Panthers Team hotel. We decided in deference to the veteran Peyton Manning. Lets do it here. The broncos inside. They are Milling Around. Some having some breakfast, some coffee. They will have Team Meetings during the day. Not a lot of fans here now. Yesterday after the Team Arrivals it was crawling in orange clad football freaks. And speaking of the arrivals yesterday, it was the broncos with the first touchdown at san jose airport. About 3 00 or so yesterday afternoon. Kind of cool. The united jet adorned with broncos logos, flags. The taxi was very dramatic. Of course, as expected one of the first to emerge was the head coach, gary kubiak, along with his wife rhonda. We saw john elway, former bronco and stanford great. Then of course the current bronco quarterback who is pretty good in his own right, Peyton Manning. All smiles as he strolled across the tarmac. Maybe doing this dance for the final time. 39 years old. Could be his final season as a player. Got a glimpse of vernon davis as well. The former 49er who still lives here in the south bay. And then about 50 minutes after that it was the panthers turn. They flew american airlines, by the way. Yes, head coach ron rivera made his early exit from the plane. Ron rivera played his College Football at cal. And then the man that everybody wanted to see, cam newton, and boy he did not disappoint. The versace zebra striped pants that everybodys been talking about. Pretty much broke twitter yesterday afternoon. You could tell how excited cam was. He splinted at a point sprinted across the tarmac. Photo bombed a couple of teammates. We talked about the hugeness of this experience fort meade and the fans. But for the fans its more so. Yesterday was their first taste, mike and gasia, of what this is all about. Scott, let me ask you in regards to the practice. Do you expect the panthers, the broncos to suit up . Will they be in full pads this week, or just tshirts and shorts . Reporter no, no, no. Theyll go. I dont know that it will be full pads every day. I dont have an official wardrobe schedule for the practices. But i imagine that certainly the first couple of days it will be. I mean, this is serious. This is a Football Game. Its an event obviously. But, i mean, at the end of the day both teams are here to win. They are going like any normal game week, they are going to prep the next four days in practice like any other sunday of regular season football. Thats scott reiss, our ktvu sports anchor, one of them down with the broncos in santa clara. You know one of the biggest events is media day for super bowl. Its always been on a tuesday. Right. But this year. They are making it monday night. Its going to be televised on the nfl network. Its a big deal because this is super bowl 50. Lets go life to janine de la vega who is outside s. A. P. Center getting ready already for media day today. Janine. Reporter yeah, they started getting ready hours and hours ago. People were here early in the morning. S. A. P. Center behind me. Black and gold super bowl 50 signs up. The staff from s. A. P. Center is here making sure that only the designated people enter. I also want to show you the police presence. Just in the last couple of minutes as we were waiting to go on, we saw police here starting to put up barricades on autumn street here. You can see they are also putting up those orange pylons there. The nfl is inside. Also preparing for this event we were also told that the Fire Department hazmat team is around, too, prepared for any sort of emergency that might happen. Tonights event starts at 5 p. M. , and thats a departure for the nfl. Typically, the media day is held on tuesday morning, but the nfl is now dubbing the event where the press gets to interview all the players super bowl 50 Opening Night. Now, its going to be broadcast during prime time on the nfl network. Thats also a first. Thousands of journalists are here to interview the players. They are going to be interviewing the players from the broncos and the panthers while fans will get to watch it all from the stands. Now, some locals are happy that this event is being held in san jose since San Francisco is getting a lot of attention with super bowl city and all the events planned there. I think for a lot of people its going to be very, very interesting to see what the nfl brings as far as the whole experience with the San Francisco and san jose trying to unite them together and everything in between. It is exciting. It kind of opens up new avenues for everyone to kind of see what nfl brings to the city. Reporter on the nfls website the tickets are sold out, but you can find some on secondary websites like stubhub. We found some for this Opening Night as low as 34. Thats in the nosebleed section. But they go on all up to a couple hundred dollars if you want to pay some more. All the fans are going to be given gift bags with a radio inside so they can listen to the interviews happening on the floor live. Also musical performances and as well as appearances by cheerleaders. Expect a lot of security. You can see they have metal detectors that are out here right in front of the s. A. P. Center. As well, we have seen a lot of officers sort of Milling Around as well as locals who i have seen on their way to work and they are snapping pictures with their cell phone because, you know, this is they are not used to seeing the banners and excitement here in downtown san jose. Reporter all right. Janine, thank you. We will check back in later on. Lets bring it back to San Francisco. Janine mentioned security in the south bay. The same story here in San Francisco. Joining us live on the nine, San Francisco Police Captain david lazar, Commanding Officer for super bowl city. Things are just getting started. Give us an update on how its been the last couple of days. We are well prepared. We put a good plan in place. We are working with the local, state, and federal partners. This is a very secured area. And so we want to ensure that the people come down and have a good time and feel safe. They are going to see a large police presence. In this day and age, those are the things we think about and we are prepared. When we came in we went on saturday. We had to go through airportstyle security. You have to put your bag on the thing like if you are going to the airport. What kind of people do you have looking for, you know, extra band of showers couldnt cant ra band there . There is officers in regular uniform. Officers intactcal gear. We are very high profile and watching everyone coming through and we have a long list of prohibited items. We are checking bags. We are making sure when you get inside you are safe and everyone around you is as well. When i got off the ferry on saturday thats one of the first things i noticed was your officers intactcal gear. Was there any debate about not showing them in full Tactical Gear . We had a discussion about what kind of presence we want to have. In this day and age if what happened in paris and other parts of the country, we are going to show a visable presence and show the public we are prepared for any possible problems that may occur here. When i was here on saturday with these guys i breezed through security. I made a point of not bringing a purse, not bringing a bag, no stroller. You mentioned prohibited items. What are some of the items people think they can get through, but they actually cant . Well, its interesting you say that because people think that they can get through with their knives and with their different types of pepper spray. Youre kidding . And stun guns and poles and sticks. You have seen this stuff coming through . Well, people have been turned away already at the gates. With this sort of thing . Well take it, go on in. Well, we see that they have brought it and we say you cant bring this in. If you can possess it legally, like pepper spray, for example, you could possess it legally, but not in our venue. Is our biggest concern a softer target outside of the city . Super bowl city. Your muni lines that go elsewhere . We are paying close attention to absolutely everything. Its not just about super bowl city. Its what we are doing at nfl experience. Its what were watching through the city. Now, our Emergency Operations center is up and running. Our department Operations Center is up and running. Its all hands on deck. We are watching. We have our finger on the pulse citywide and regionally and working with federal, state partners. We are looking at the bay area and what is hang in san jose. I guess this is a city thats done big events before. Did you learn from the other cities that have donesuper bowl . I know, mike, you went to super bowl last year. Did you learn anything from them, the other cities best practices, those kinds of things, as to what to do for a big event like this . Thats what we do. We had a whole contingent of Police Officers who went to the last super bowl and watched their Law Enforcement and we took notes and it was part of our planning. There are Law Enforcement agencies that are in San Francisco right now in anticipation of the next super bowl. Super bowl li. So, yeah, we are studying these plans and have put them together. You get a chance as a native, someone who has been on the force for 25 years, to take a step back and soak it all in that this is happening . We havent had a super bowl in Northern California for more than 30 years. This is great. I mean, we as Police Officers are excited. I have to tell you that. We have Something Big like this. We are a city that knows how in San Francisco between world series parades. We have looked at what we have done good and the things we needed to improve on and put together a good plan for in. Thanks, captain. Have a great week. Thank you very much. Pleasure to be here. Taking a short break. Staying here on the 9. We are going to turn to the news of the day in a moment and the fact that there is a federal review expected to be announced today. The San Francisco actions when it comes to the shooting death of mario woods. We will have that in a moment. Also, in iowa we are going to take you live out there to ktvus ross polumbo. Let go live now to des moines, iowa, ktvu political reporter ross polumbo is joining us live this morning. Good morning, ross. Reporter good morning, everyone. We are in the fox news headquarters here in Downtown Des Moines right now. I want to give you a look at the news channel setup here. This is the set that you have seen anchor brett bear come to you live 24 hours a day for the past week. Over here, take a look at this. This is where you see all those people that are in boxes when they are talking to the apingers. Thats the interview set over there. That is what the person being interviewed sees. This is a little look of the behind the scenes. It takes a lot of technology to bring all of this to you. Lets get to the candidates. Donald trump has been campaigning across the state. He was in sioux city, iowa just last night until late into the night. He was there with Jerry Fallwell jr. Campaigning. He is shoring up support somewhere evangelicals. 50 of gop caucus goers are evangelicals. A key group there. He came out yesterday saying he would appoint Supreme Supreme Court justice to reverse gay marriage. Ton ted cruz. He has been losing support. He was in davenport last night to reverse all of that. And all of this coming as controversy of his mailers claiming voter violations. The secretary of state here says they look like official tickets and are inappropriate. Cruz says hell do, though, what it takes to get the votes. And we are going to continue to use every tool we can to encourage the men and women of iowa to come out, to caucus on monday night and to stand together as one. Reporter we caught up with Carly Fiorina at the fox news headquarters. She didnt want it to talk to us this morning, even though she is doing 2 in the polling. She doesnt believe those polls are accurate. On to the democrats. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders in a statistical dead heat. They held rallies in des moines here late last night. Hillary made her closing arguments with husband bill and her daughter chelsea by her side. This is her email scandal continuing to plague her. Friday 22 new classified emails arrived. She says they werent classified when she sent them. Finally, Bernie Sanders in des moines making his final argument. He is still not attacking hillary on her emails, but he is speaking out still against wall street, big business and corporate america. Again one more time, the caucuses are just eight hours away here. We will be here all day long to keep you covered from beginning to end. Now, unlike california, the polls dont open during the day. They are not open all day long. People show up at the caucuses. Thats going to be happening at 5 p. M. Bay area time. And thats when it really all starts, about an hour and a half people get together and start casting the votes. As soon as the returns come in we will bring you the very latest. Back to you. Thank you, ross. Now time to check some of the headlines around the bay. Lets go to dave clark in our ktvu studios with the headlines. Sal, thank you. They will be out looking for drivers who speed, make illegal turns, or dont stop for people crossing the streets. Those officers will also ticket pedestrians who cross the street illegally. Now, Oakland Police say they investigated almost 900 traffic crashes involving pedestrians over the past three years. And a program that would give condoms to San Francisco middle school students, it will be debated today. It was introduced by the superintendent of the San Francisco unified school district. The San Francisco examiner reports students would need to meet with a school nurse for a social worker before they would get that condom. A School Board Committee will talk about this proposal at their meeting tonight at 6 00. Those are just a couple of your morning headlines. Gas yeah, mike and sal, back to you. All right. Dave, thank you very much. As i mentioned, i took the ferry in. I was going to get some work done. Then i ran into an old college friend.
