KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am February 2, 2016

Thats right. Punxsutawney phil not seeing his shadow, which means an early spring. Thats right. At least on the east coast, its done, right . Maybe not here. We did have the rain this morning, although its stopped here. Little choppy on the ferry but ran into a friend of mine. Never know who youre going to meet. Nice ride. Lets talk about where we are. We are at super bowl city in San Francisco. Well be here all week long and yesterday i ran into nothing but locals. I imagine in the coming days thats going to change. So its best if everyone coming to town, what would you tell the out of towners coming to our city . Dont call it san fran. Or frisco. I mean, you can. But if you dont want to sound like a tourist, dont say san fran. Maybe were talking about what you want them to go and see, what they should avoid. Tell us so we can tell them. Tvuthe9 and well check those all morning. And we are also doing super fan of the day. Send us your pictures if you want to be considered for super fan of the day. Leonard is a jets fan who moved here from new york, one of our super fans of the day. We are asking for pictures of people in gear and use tvuthe9. And alex, i actually was there when you took that shot. Hes a real fan. Alex has been at super bowl city all morning long, now at the chevron stem zone, science, technology, engineering and math. Reporter absolutely. We have been talking all morning long act how important science and technology is to the game of football and how it will play a role in the big game. This is a football helmet from the 1950s. Think about how far weve come and this is what the gear looks like these days. Bigger elements, better protect the players. Thats part of what youll see if you come down to the stem zone here at super bowl city. You can learn all act how science plays a role and trying to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Check this out. Ive only been here a couple hours and i have my own locker here. Thats pretty cool for me. Something else thats neat, they will let you control this sky cam. These are the cameras up on the cables that you see when youre watching a game there. Its an aerial view here, so you can control that with a remote and come down to the fan zone. So, you can come in here and this area is netted off. You can test out your arm strength a little bit, see what you got. Whats the Science Behind a perfect pass . A lot of science. Ideally you want to create a spiral because that allows air to travel around the ball rather than hitting it and knocking it down. Okay. 23 . I hear you can really throw it. Lets find out. 31. Ive got to beat that. Get some momentum behind it. Nice. Very good. Appreciate that. So this is all here at the stem zone inside super bowl city. Remember, it is free to the public and opens up here at 11 00 this morning. By the way, we have a special guest coming up on the 9 this morning. Ill give you a hint here. Check this out. Perfect pass. He caught it. Way to miss. Look at this. Thanks a lot. Coming up at 9 45, the one and only dwight clark. Nice. And speaking of super bowl city, well bring in spokesman pj johnson for super bowl city. How is it going . This is day two of the week before the super bowl. Have you had more people from out of town coming in . Yes, theyre starting to roll in from all around the country. I think it will really pick up around thursday or friday. Huge crowds and it was packed here, maybe 150,000 over the course of the weekend. Its raining now but its supposed to clear up by 11 00 when we open. We are encouraging folks to come on down. The idea of running it for the full nine days was really to give people in the bay area, locals a head start on all the activities. It will fill up pretty good thursday and friday. Talk about the ebb and flow during the day. Ive only seen it from opening to mid to late afternoon. Talk about the second half of the day for super bowl city. As you probably saw, during the day its kids everywhere, doing all the fan zone activities, throwing footballs like alex and doing cool stuff. Then at night well have concerts and the stage is to the left after you enter into super bowl city. On Opening Night and last night we had huge crowds. We expect that to continue. We have great bands coming up, and alicia keys saturday night. Thats probably the highlight of the nighttime. People doing all the fun stuff all day, all evening long. The zip line, the Fan Energy Zone where they do the cycles and compete with each other. Its very cool. Lets talk about game day. I know the Host Committee is organize, shuttle buses to get down to the stadium. Are you selling ticketings for those . Yeah, were trying to give people a number of options. Public transit is a good option. The local Host Committee is not encouraging driving private automobiles. Wed rather get you in a bus. We have the fan express, for 55 a round trip ticket with stops all over the bay area to pick people up and take them to the game. We have an app that you can use that could give you all the information and fill you in on that. Its not sold out or anything, the fan express . No, its not. Again, its a way to put as many people on coaches and get them down there first timely. Friends coming in from downtown booked it from colorado. Like i said, were trying to give people owe number of options so theres not one overloaded system. It helps on the west coast in the afternoon, on a sunday, theres traffic but hopefully wont be too bad. What are you hearing in regards to favorite attractions, favorite food . You know, ive been working the last few days. I havent gotten into much. But the wood house grill looks awfully good and generating a lot of lines. Ive noticed a few beer sales moving as well. Really . I know, its shocking. Also we are encouraging people to eat and drink and enjoy town all around here. The restaurants are doing great. As far as business goes, that crepes place on the inside of the plaza, a regular takeout place that operates all the time, it is doing huge business. I also heard that the petes coffee at the Ferry Building did its single largest day of any petes coffee in the country. Doing great business. So really everyone seems to be seeing a lot of business now. Thank you for coming in. Have a great rest of the week. Another big story this tuesday morning, the iowa caucuses. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders in a dead heat, and on the republican side ted cruz took the victory last night. Well bring in our political analyst. Brian is in our studios in oakland. Sometimes people dont remember who finished in second. This time its donald trump. Any shock about this . The poll numbers going in had trump up in iowa. Yes, they did but at the end of the day, cruz had a great ground game. Thousands of volunteers out there working very hard, trying to get out of the gate quickly. So cruz did very well. I think the real winner, even though you dont get a prize for third, is marco rubio, who didnt spend a lot of time in the state but really came on strong into the night. Do you think these results have anything to do with the fact that trump skipped that last debate . Theyre polling on that. It will be interesting to see whether people in iowa thought he disrespected them in some way. The bottom line, he didnt have the ground game in iowa that ted cruz did. And frankly, we knew that going into it, that cruz has been working the state for a long time. Reporter and New Hampshire is a lot different from iowa. Caucuses are different from a regular primary. Is that going to help someone like rubio in just a straight primary . Well see what happens with rubio in New Hampshire. Hes got some momentum. And i think on that side of the aisle, its a very interesting dynamic with three people. Youll see as weve been talking about, huckabee left the race only republican side and omalley on the democratic side. And in sort of a super bowl theme, Bernie Sanders made the political catch, catching Hillary Clinton last night. That was unexpected three months ago, where he was so far down in the polls. In regards to that, you told me over the summer the results in iowa could be shocking. Was the Biggest Surprise that clinton lost that big of a lead or that sanders actually gained on her . I think you have to credit sanders as much as you have to say clinton was losing momentum. When you think act it, sanders is really resonating with young people, people disaffected around the government, people in an Economic Situation where they really dont want to try and relate to millionaires and billionaires. And Bernie Sanders is really connecting on all of that. I think it was a combination that delivered that viral tie last night. As you know, sanders may have lost by two tenths of a point and is this morning working very hard on seeing if there were other votes out there to put him over the top. We look next to New Hampshire. Thank you for joining us again on the 9. Still to come, fire in the Oakland Hills. What firefighters actually had to deal with that made this one especially tough. And another snow survey held today. After all the rain weve seen, what officials are saying about the snow pack, next. Panccoffee and oj, baand a killer price. Thats a win, win, win, win, win. Dennys grand slam slugger, part of the 2, 4, 6, 8 value menu. Dennys. Welcome to americas diner. Welcome back to the 9. Awesome introduction, guys. Take it away. All right. Well see you in a few minutes. Good morning, everybody. Some of the top stories we are following this morning it is being reported that yahoo could announce major layoffs. There are several reports out suggesting the ceo will lay out a plan to restructure the company to cut costs and reportedly about a thousand jobs will be cut. This after yahoo announced it was spinning off its main Internet Business in december. An official announcement is scheduled at 2 00 p. M. This afternoon, when the Company Releases its Quarterly Earnings error. A fire gutted a house in the Oakland Hills overnight. Investigators plan to return to the home later today to try and determine a cause. The chief says no one was there at the time of the fire but the home was undergoing renovations an had more wood and other Flammable Materials than an average house. The fbi is looking into the San Francisco Police Department after the controversial shooting of stabbing suspect mario woods. This is the wrong video there. Protestors have been calling for a federal investigation since police shot and killed woods in december. The review will likely only include recommendations and not Court Ordered reforms. The police chief says he welcomes the review to look for alternatives to deadly force. Those are your Morning Headlines from the studio. Coming up on mornings on 2, ktvu was at media day, one of the biggest events of the year for nfl fans. Hear what it was like. We got to talk to cam newton and others, coming up when we return. Everyone needs a bff. Even your smile. Colgate optic white express White Toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide. For whiter teeth in 3 days. Think of it as your smile bff. Colgate optic white express white. Whiter teeth in 3 days just by brushing. Forget about sunday. The big game for these guys are monday night. Its awesome. We have a lot of athletic ability, a lot of joking, and some dont even play football. Reporter several pro players crowned four teams. Able to make a guy miss or woman miss or a woman making another miss. Its unreal the skill set at this age. Thats somebodys daddy. Reporter they are all 9 to 14, considered the best of the best in the country. Brian picked up the win over ohio. Felt so awesome. It was the greatest feeling in the world. Reporter losing can be a tough lesson, but like a true quarterback, ryan stayed positive. We think we can come back next year and win. Reporter and they will be rooting for the same team sunday. Panthers. Carolina panthers. I love cam newton. It was Opening Night for the super bowl and media day last night. There were some unusual characters in the crowd as well. Reporter somewhere along the line, super bowl media day or Opening Night became almost as much about the people covering the spectacle as those who perform in the spectacle. They just let me in. Thats the only credential i need right there. Who are you . Big boy from nickelodeon. Ever knows that. Were here here from austria. Ive heard the slolem course here is tough. Is there a slolem course . How would you be received at home if the primary colors youre wearing right now were silver and black . I might be booed out of dia, Denver International airport. Reporter athletic young men are more likely to want to be interviewed by Miss Universe than a more traditional sports reporter. You think Miss Universe might help you get answers other people arent able to get . With my charm, i hope so. Everyone is fighting for attention, so i thought, sexy referee could work. You know ed . No. Has anybody committed a personal foul against you yet . Not yet but theres still time. This is kind of, you know, my professional subdued outfit for some of the others i have planned for the week. This is your most conservative approach today . Yes, it is. For 33 years ive been leading the cheers at mile high stadium, and this is my seventh super bowl. [i talking in spanish i] did you understand what she was saying . When people get exuberant and happy like that and say cam newton, i pretty much get what theyre talking about. I think the conclusion you can make after all these years of media day and Opening Night, is that the people who were originally there to cover the proceedings now want to be part of the proceedings. Thats kind of whats interesting. Is it getting too crazy . Do you think the message is lost . The message has been lost for 20 years now. No one wants to break down the 43 defense . No. And the super bowl is such a spectacle, so why not . But the nfl is all act staging. Its not a casual thing with a little plaque. It gets bigger and bigger and its about staging. I think the old days of media day are gone. Is this because the nfl wants to pull in everybody . Growing up, i didnt know anything about the super bowl except maybe when the niners were in it. They are looking to get people like me in on the fun who maybe dont care so much about the sport. Absolutely and thats what the commercial is about. Youre supposed to not leave your seat during the commercials an halftime shows. You know beyonce, and youll watch so youll be tuning in. Your first super bowl, i have to say, you said it was 15 . The first one i ever covered. I went to one live, number 11 at the rose bowl. That was the first one the raiders won, the minnesota vikings. Funny story about that. I was a college kid and my roommate was the son of a long time 49er. He had tickets and mark said, want to go with me . My grandparents had a motor home. College kids, lets get the motor home and drive down to pasadena and go to the super bowl. We have free tickets and we can sleep on the side of the road. We did. We parked in the parking lot in pasadena, spent the night there, woke up no questions asked, go to the super bowl. Wow. And we were incensed that it cost like 25 to fill up the tank with gas. Then we get there and we had great seats. We look around, theres lamar hunt, owner of the kansas chiefs on one side. Theyre going, what are these college kids doing with these great seats . Its nice to have it back in super bowl. First time here in Northern California in more than 30 years. Are people talking about that . So much press about having the super bowl in the bay area. I think they would like to have, certainly the 49ers and people at levi stadium would love to have it in the regular rotation. L. A. Used to be and they dont have enough any longer. So this is a chance for california to get back in the rotation. I think they are all hoping, this is probably okay. But a deluge would not be okay on sunday. We have had nice clear days this week. So keep our if i think, crossed for those. And then let the el nino resume. Do you still get excited to cover super bowl . I dont know if excited is the right word. But ive never lost track of the fact that i get paid to go to media day and go to ball game. So the Biggest Development in addition to the people that want to perform on media day is the fact that the first super bowl i covered, which i believe was in new orleans, 300 credentialed media. Now its over 3000. You can imagine the security and stuff just to get in. Its way more of a hassle than it was in the old days. When you drove your motor home down and parked in the parking lot. Dwight clark is going to join us, so stay with us. Still to come on the 9, we are talking about Punxsutawney Phil. Its groundhog day. Well be right back. Is our partnership with habitat for humanity. Pg e is committed to clean energy and part of that commitment our mission is to build homes, community and hope. Our homeowners are lowincome families, so the ability for them to have Lower Energy Cost is wonderful. We have been able to provide about 600 families with solar on their homes. Thats over nine and a half Million Dollars of investment by pg e, and that allows us to provide clean energy for everyone here. Its been a great partnership. Together, were building a better california. We have a tweet here that says, dont call it frisco, and tip bartenders and servers. Give the city a little love. A lot of good responses from your guys. Use ktvuthe9 and well look at these on the air. Now lets check with meteorologist steve paulson. The rain has stopped, at least for the most part. We have another system wednesday, then everything pointing toward a dry and super we weekend
