KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am July 4, 2016

Sal castaneda enjoying the morning off. I am sure that sal is already tweeting about the fact that golden state is getting a new member. Yes. That is our breaking news we begin with. A bombshell for bay area basketball fans. Superstar kevin durant reportedly joining the Golden State Warriors as he made that amountains. Earlier this morning. Nba sources saying he will sign a twoyear 54 million deal with the warriors. The warriors executive jerry west making a final pitch to durant in a phone call saturday night. Joining us from his vacation, ktvu sports anchor jason applebaum. Jason, thanks for joining us. Your reaction to the news. Wow well, first of all, talk about fireworks on the 4th of july. I mean, this is the biggest free agent signing in warriors history. This is a really, really big deal for this team who already are a great team, obviously. But i will say that, you know, the rich just got a whole lot richer. Kevin durant is a former raiders mvp. Former mvp. Curry is the best player in the world. This guy is top three, top four in the world. I mean, he could come out and have a season next year and he could win the mvp. This is a really, really big deal for this franchise. If you look at the report, two year, 54 million deal, jason, i mean, this is obviously a message to the rest of the nba that the warriors, they want back in the championship this year and next year, and they won two titles here. Exactly. They were so close. Kevin durant was so close to beating the warriors. I mean, the thunder were up three games to one. I think it just, you know, for him it came down to he can become a better player. He has a better chance to win with the warriors. He is at the point in his career where he has gotten all the individual accolades. You know, he signs the twoyear deal. There is a player option for that second year. There is going to be more money coming in from this 24 billion tv contract. So he may go one year and then, if all goes well and they win the title and it goes, you know, the way he wants it to go, sign a longer term deal. But the warriors are always serious. The owner, you know, from the moment he got here six years ago when he pointed up to the rafters and said thats a lonely banner, we want more, he has been serious about making this team a winner. If you are a warriors fan, he is one of those players that he gets along with everybody in the locker room. He is just such a great player on the court. They have four stars now starting. They are probably going to have to it means goodbye to harrison barnes. It means good buy to festus ezeli probably, and probably goodbye to andrew bogut. They cant afford to keep all of those guys. Bogut will probably be trade and the other two guys will leave Via Free Agency most likely. Do you expect fans to be a little bit upset by todays developments . You know, in the old world, yeah. Some Old School Fans might because you never see Magic Johnson joining larry bird. You know, and part of me feels the same way. I mean, when you when the thunder lost, they were up three games to one to the warriors and they blew the last three games, the warriors came back and won, part of me thought, hey, if im kevin durant, i want to beat these guys. I want to come back and beat them this year with my current year. The new nba with free agency, we see players change teams so often. Now its about, if you dont get better, you get worse. And the warriors it was unfathomable to a lot of us who followed the team all year that they even lost. They didnt win the championship. But thats how the margin is in the nba. I mean, there is teams nipping at your heels. There is the cavs. There is the thunder. The warriors felt like, hey, if we can make our team better and get a guy like this who is so clearly one of the best players in the league, we have to do it. But i get what youre saying because a lot of people dont want to see the band broken up, so to speak, right . Exactly. Does he make steph curry even better . Yes. Yes. Thats a great point because hell draw attention away. And he makes everybody better. He is a good passer. He is a good shooter. He is a good rebounder. I mean, this guy is 611. Hes got a wingspan that makes him play like a 71 player. He can shoot threes. He can drive the lane. He is in his prime. I mean he is a good teammate. He is a good guy, from what we are teammates have said. Yeah. And what we should know is that the warriors have really been courting this guy for like three years. This has been a longterm plan for them. You cant actually do it, you know, with the collective bargaining agreement. The owners cant reach out. The players can text. They can talk. They were on the team u. S. A. Team that went to the world cup and won it. And the three guys that stayed after on the court during those times a year ago was kevin durant, steph curry, and klay thompson. And they would, im sure, talk hey wouldnt it be great if you play with us . In the end durant knows the locker room is great with the warriors. He knows how good the warriors are. I am guessing it was a struggle for him because he said that Oklahoma City is his home and he made his name. Thats the only team he ever played for. But i think this opportunity at this point in his career and then when you have jerry west, you know, the nba logo and the warriors executive calling you and, like you said, in that final push, you know, you pick up the phone and listen. I think he afield him and said you are going to be a better player. You are going to become the player that you can be and youre also going to play for a team that could win two, three, four championships if you sign a longterm agreement. Lets hope its a magical fit. Nine seasons with okc. Time for a new adventure as kevin durant is coming out west to play for the Golden State Warriors. Happy 4th of july. The 4th of july parade in Pleasant Hill will go on after crews finished repairs on a sinkhole that opened up on the parade route. This is what contra costa boulevard looked like this morning. Smooth, ready for a parade. Over the past two days crews have been busy pushing to fix water damage to the road where the parade is getting underway. Water flowed down contra costa boulevard at woods worth right where the parade starts. As we said, it is better than new right now. Coming up here on mornings on 2 the 9, a touching rescue on this 4th of july. And two women making history by playing for a bay area mens professional baseball league. They will join us a little bit later in the newscast. Breyers natural vanilla. Milk and fresh cream and only sustainably farmed vanilla. Breyers has fresh cream, sugar and milk. Breyers. The good vanilla. Our milk and cream come from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones. This is so good first you start with this. Then add this. And this face. Wait, we can do better. Yeah. Thats the one. And fresh brewed lipton iced tea. A lipton meal is what you bring to it. And the bright refreshing taste of lipton iced tea. We love to check twitter when we have got a great topic like we do today. Breaking news earlier on mornings on 2. We talked about it on the 9. Kevin durant coming to the Golden State Warriors. Thomas tweets warriors lost the championship but just won the offseason. Joining the warriors should bring championships for years to come. Golden boy 30. Its on now. This team is looking deadly right now. Also steve, as we welcome kevin durant, lets take a moment to thank the players who will no longer be with the warriors. Of course, they have to let a couple of people go to be able to afford kevin durant. Donna said good job doing the weather, mike. Kind of off topic. I am not taking rosemarys job. Also Andre Igodala is tweeting saying, hey, good time. I turn on the go go wifi at the right time to find this news. Some of the players already chatting about the big signing. Interesting. We will keep talking about it. We love your tweets, especially when you use the hashtag tvuthe9. A las vegas collector with a rare piece of history. He stumbled upon a copy of the declaration of independence. I found it in one of the boxes. Every time i do this, i am nervous as hell. Reporter he wasnt expecting to land something so significant in a small package. I was extremely surprised. Reporter costner regularly buys antiques from auctions and recently bought a box of old documents. He says among the old pieces of paper there was one that stood out. It was a folded up stained old piece of paper in there. And when i unfolded it, of course, i realized it was an old copy of the declaration. It connects you to the founding of the country. Reporter a connection only 50 people in the world are known to have. Its wonderful to see it. You dont see these. They are known. The original 201 that were printed, a little over 50 are known today. Reporter mark haul patton is the museums administrator for clark county. He also authenticates artifacts. I have had 35 declaration of independences come in over the last 15 to 20 years. This is the second one that has any collector value that is, in fact, an early printing. Reporter as the story goes, our Founding Fathers penned the original in 1776. It wasnt until 1820 when John Quincy Adams asked the printer to make exact copies on copper plates. Hall patton says certain markings help authenticate each copy. In this version, William Stone misspelled his middle name. His name was william i. Stone. Not william j. Reporter it marks the start of something great. This is where we said, okay, were on our own. Great britain, were not a part of you any more. When you think about it in those terms, this is what created us. Reporter if you are wondering what costner plans to do. It will be conservation framed. Its gonna be on my wall for a very long time. I love the nice tweets nice is getting for doing a good job with weather. Far from it. Not because he is learning a new skill. Rosemary is out and about on this 4th of july holiday. She is actually in alameda right across the estuary. Thats where a big parade is set to begin in minutes, rosemary. Reporter yeah. Perhaps one of the best parades in the east bay. We are here right along park street in alameda. Get a load of this vehicle. Wow id love to cruise along in this as the parade gets underway. Starts about 10 00. So you still have to come out. Folks are beginning to line up. We are looking at a huge parade. From what i understand, perhaps one of the largest and longest they claim in the nation. Its about three miles long from what i understand. Close to 20,000 spectators come on out. I am going to step back here. We will talk to some folks who actually know what is going on. Hi. Hi. Reporter how are you doing . Fine. Reporter she is the committee chair. And so were talking a little bit about the parade getting underway. You have been doing this for several years, and i asked why do you do it, and you said, well, nobody else will . Thats right. Thats right. Or you talk to some of my family, they think i am crazy. Reporter what makes this parade so special . Its truly a communitywide event. We have half the town in it. The other half watches it. We get a lot of participation from everybody. We have so many horses. We have the wells fargo stagecoach this year and we have got dancing horses. We have thee mariachi units. Reporter are you responsible for how the parade is lined up . I am. A small group of volunteers spends three and a half hours putting the lineup together so its hopefully exciting from start to end. Reporter its not random . No. For you trying to get in in september, we have our first application for this year in september. It doesnt go by when you put your application in. Reporter all right. Looking forward to this. We have some beautiful antique cars out here. Its a Huge Community event. You said these are all volunteers . Absolutely. Reporter all right. I want stand by just one moment. I want to introduce you to michelle. She is from the east bay. Michelle, you are a resident who has come year after year after year. You said your parents brought you when you were a kid . Yes. Reporter talk about how its changed and what you love about it and why you come here year after year. Because i keep on the tradition for my mom. Now i bring my grandsons. Reporter i see. I like it. I was born and raised in alameda. I moved to hayward and now i come back once a year for the 4th of july. Reporter you sound like you are getting choked up. I think for a lot of folks 4th of july is an emotional day and a prideful day. It reminds me of my mom. And now i bring my sons. Reporter and your grandson . Yes. Reporter well, doesnt he look festive. You are just cute. Are you ready for a parade . Umhmm. Say yes. You ready to see the horseys . Reporter there he goes. Thanks, michelle. You have a great day. So again this just getting ready to get underway. They are going to be there are going to be antique cars, live bands, there are going to be equestrian. Of course, the dancers and a lot of fun going on out here. And on cue, the sun is coming out as well. Low clouds over the east bay. Now we are going to see mostly sunny skies for the rest of the day. But those clouds are going to be back a little bit later. So for folks out just inside the bay for the fireworks, maybe plan for the low clouds as we get into the evening hours. Back to you guys. Thank you, rosemary. One of our Family Traditions is going to the Alameda County fair. Is that is one of yours as well, today is the last day. The fair is expecting the largest crowds today. Organizers say many families make the fair their 4th of july tradition. In addition to all the fried foods on a stick you can find, plus the carnival rides, plus the livestock, which i like to walk through, the destruction derby, the bands, the motocross show, plus the pig races, there are fireworks tonight. Fireworks start at 9 30 p. M. A nineyearold girl in minnesota is helping the homeless. She opened up a popup beauty shop to raise money for the homeless. She offered to do hair, nails outside the home for a dollar to help raise money. At first she had a tough time getting anyone to take her seriously, but right when she was about to call it quits she got her first customer and things just took off from there. I said, really . And so i did them. And then she posted this thing on facebook and now im technically famous. My friends had already posted or had already shared it on their page, and i was like, wait a minute. I read through it and im like, oh, what a sweet story. Then im huge, im like thats my daughter thats my daughter. So that thing that mom posted on facebook has gone viral and been shared thousands and thousands of times. She has raised about a 100 and received some donations about the hair and nails. We are hearing from people behind a new fox tv show set to debut this fall about women in sports. Pitch. Its go a character who becomes the first woman to play major league baseball. The shows executive producers says the series was inspired by mone davis. The first girl to win a Little League world series game. We need more things on tv to inspire and give us hope and that motivate and empower people. I think that this is what the show does. And you can watch the Series Premiere of pitch september 22nd right here on ktvu fox 2 . Last week here on the 9 we talked about stacy filipino and kelsie whitmore. They became out first two women to play for a mens professional week. How do you feel being held up as a role model for so many . I definitely feel like we are for younger girls. A lot of younger girls have come to the game and been like super excited and it makes them want to keep harder. What was it like the first game with the stompers playing together and being in the dugout and take the field . You are in the outfield, right . I was on the mound. It was really exciting. I tried to treat it like any other game and relax. You cant let the hype and media get to you. I was relaxing, pitching like i usually do. I had gotten there that day. It was a great time. The guys on the team have been so amazing and very helpful. Lets talk about the fact you both started playing when you were five or six years old. In those early years it doesnt matter, if you will, boys and girls can play together on the same team. When is it, oh, youre a girl, you cant play on my team . I mean, id say high school. When the guys get older, they really start thinking, wow, you know, this is my territory. This is my area. Like they start to get, you know i dont know. They just they feel like its their world and having a girl in a mans world is kind of different and its gonna be a lot tougher. So, i mean, growing up with any being competitive, any guy or girl its always gonna be that way. Its expected and i see it that way. Similar experience . Right. Usually around the teenage, after that they kind of start getting like kelsie said, a little more things are more serious with that. I think similar with me and kelsie. We were both very fortunate to have gotten the chance to play with the same guys. We grew up with the same guys. They took that brother role. So i think for them we kind of lucked out because they viewed us as a player. We were lucky to get to play with the same guys. You have known each other prior to playing for the stompers and you have worn the red, white, and blue. You have represented our country. You are doing it again this year. What is that like on in 4th of july to wear u. S. A. On your jersey and play baseball for the country . Oh, i mean, being a part of the Womens National team has made me so much more patriotic. I love playing and representing my country. There is no better feeling than doing that. I mean, yeah. You have a fan base thats the whole country thats with you. Nothing matters than we are here together playing for our country. I was going to ask how would you like to see the world of professional sports for women change . I think it definitely needs to change. I think that especially now we have got more women just playing athletics in general. You know, growing up from talking to whether it be my mom or a teammates mom and they were saying when we were younger we didnt have these opportunities. I think its amazing that were growing and we love to play sports just as much as the guys. I think that that would be really ideal. It would just be its great to have the options for the females to play what sport they want to play. You are paving the way. Any thoughts on kevin durant joining the warriors . I dont know if you are a warriors fan . I am from florida. Not in basketball. Thanks for coming in. You play tonight. Taking on pittsburg in sonoma . Home game. Get out there. Thats at 5 00 or 6 00 . 5 00. Go see the stompers. Congratulations again. Thank you. Thank you. Stacy and kelsie. Coming up after a quick break, we are serving up 4th of july ideas for your celebration. Stay with us. Mornings on 2 continues. Es. So many of us are going to be serving up great food, and maybe you are already in the preparing mode. We are working on a gorgeous red, white, and blue themed dessert and a couple of extra ideas for your party that will keep you partying along with your gusts. Say good morning to olivia colt. Thanks for coming in on this 4th of july. We are going to make a dessert that i have never tried because i am intimidated. It involves egg whites and when i get to that point in the recipe i freeze. You tell me i shouldnt be intimidated . No, you shouldnt. Egg whites are the least of your issues. Believe me. But what we have here egg whites. Four egg whites. Cornstarch and a couple and a quarter of sugar. Weve gone ahead and beaten that to soft peaks. It looks like marshmellows. Do you want to help me with the last ingredients . I do. I have never made one of these areas. I have never heard of it until this morning. Mike, if you want to dump in the vinegar. We have a teaspoon of vinegar and a half of teaspoon of vanilla bean paste. Smell that. I like it. It makes the pavlova even better. Whats the vinegar for . It creates a really awesome gooey like squishy marshmellow inside. Its crisp on the outside and smooth on the inside. I am always about easy entertaining. Most of the people say you need to draw a circle and do all this stuff to your pavlova. I dump it in the center of the cookie seat. Based on my stirring . I figured i am going to take it off the plate here. I like to dot the corners of my parchment paper to make sure that my parchment paper doesnt move anywhere. I put this into a 350degree oven preheated and drop it to 300 when this guy goes in. No peekk. 45 minutes. Leave the oven open for two hours, let it cool down and then you have this guy. Its fallen. Now, is this what its supposed to do . Ia. Or is this an oops . This is definitely not an oops. You dont have to be perfect. This is easy entertaining. Can i touch it . Its like crispy rock hard and other side is gooey. Yeah. Oh, wow, it is. Keep going. So put that guy down. After i finish this, you go ahead and try this. I have one for you. Already to go and one four. Thank you. Did mike make this right before the 9 started . Yes, he took his time. When clients have these, do you say sprinkle your own flavor in . Its a collaboration between the two of us. Its their ideas and their inspiration and us putting into action. If they want Something Special and unique, we are down to do it for them. I am down to eat this. This is right. I am a huge home cook. I can do this ahead, the morning of so i am not running around the kitchen when my guests are here. Yeah. If you want to start plopping berries on here. Start decorating it. I am going to watch you. A little plop or a sprinkle . You have fun with it. Its all about having fun. This is great for kids, too. In honor of kevin durant. Side from the whipped cream, this is relatively lowfat, right, because its egg whites, its berries . Yeah, its glutenfree, which is awesome. Its not sugarfree, obviously. Yeah, you can, you know, just make in the night before or you can even freeze it up to a month in your freezer. Thats good. You can make them individual size. [ applause ] should we do more . I mean, however much you want. One for the road. Lets talk about we talk more about getting home cooks out in the Party Instead of stuck in the kitchen. This is something i have never seen. What we did, you know, its 4th of july, obviously. We made red, white, and blue lemonade stand. We used store bought lemonade and took strawberry puree and added it. If the guests are coming over, dump the condiments in a jar and they can build their own hot dogs. And you can do chips and salsa, but red, white, and blue. How fun is that . I love the size of the hot dogs, you know. I made hamburgers similar size last night for the family. It was different. Yeah. Its great. Everybody loves something in a mini, right . Is that a cocktail lemonade . You can make it that way. Thank you so much. We have all these recipes on ktvu. Com. We do hope you look for it under the web links section when you get to our home page. This looks and smells delicious. Thank you so much. Salt and honey catering. Happy 4th of july we will be right back. All right. Still getting a lot of responses regarding the news. Kevin durant will be joining the Golden State Warriors. Oakland mayor libby schaaf tweeted, welcome to oakland. The best fans in the world welcome you with open arms. Of course, our twitter question to you, this morning was how do you feel about this move . We are getting responses on twitter. I will take a moment here and read a couple more. I just lost the one i said. Dawn tweets, love it. The big four. Dynasty in the making. And then change saying, tweets best move, best news. Welcome to the bay durant. Vanessa tweeted kevin durant and welcomed him to the warriors. Exciting. Warriors fans reaching out to him on twitter. Right. One more response i want to read. Not about this question, but from jay who tweeted, mike, so you know, you got egg whites in your white coat sleeve when decorating with berries. If you are not messy, youre not really a cook, right . I was into it. I liked that segment. We should do more of that. We have another story. An army veteran in minnesota helped rescue a bald eagle trapped into a tree. They saw an eagle hanging upside down from a tree branch. Here is a photo. The birds leg was caught in a piece of rope wrapped around the branch. They called police. Then the fire department. Then the States Department of Natural Resources for some help, but they were all told that the rescue was too risky to try by the officials. Jason decided to step in after getting permission from the States Department of Natural Resources. Everybody said they have been aware for two and a half days, but unfortunately to wasnt within their jurisdiction and Safety Measures were going to be compromised. Took after hour and a half. I had to bust down a few barns. Finally, it started chipping the rope away. Galvin says he was nervous, but also patient because, of course, he didnt want to shoot the bird. A neighbor and a conservation officer helped with the rescue. They named the eagle freedom. The eagle is doing okay. It is the 4th of july and in coney island, new york, that means hot dogs. And a lot of them. The 100th nathans famous hot dog eating contest is underway. San joses own Joey Chestnut is back to reclaim his title. He was undefeated eight years before being beaten by matt stonie, who also lives in san jose. Last near stonie eight 62 dogs in the tenminute long contest. That was two more than chestnut. So last year worked for me. The last time it worked for me. I did the same thing this year. Joey is changing up a lot this year. Thats because he didnt win last year. I am gonna come out with a vicious, vicious speed and im gonna maintain it for a long time. So in my capacity, its just, oh, its scary. When i was practicing i was like, oh my god, i have never eaten this much. There is a lot at stake in this years hot dog eating contest. For the competitors, the first place finisher will win 10,000. One is good. Two is my limit. After that its not a pretty sight. Happy 4th of july to you, gasia, and you at home. Have a safe and enjoyable morning. Pancake breakfast. Start the barbecue early. Whatever it may be. We leave you with a live shot of the American Flag on this Independence Day. A little u. S. Blues from the good old grateful dead. Gasia and i will see you back here at noon. At noon. Hey they go ooh ooh. Hey they go ohoohooooh. Sitting, watching, waiting, wishing. I tell you one thing, you never knew it. At the back of the bus there is so much to give, so dream big. Yeah. And when they screaming get out, get out. All i wanna hear is get down, get down. Get full on summer at target.
