KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am July 6, 2016

Rising from what used to be that structure there. And very, very busy wednesday morning to you. Thanks for joining us here on the 9. Sal castaneda, mike mibach. A lot of people who were driving by in the early hours of the fire so they could feel the heat coming from that massive fire. Kow see it. I get to work very early in the morning and i was driving on interstate 880 and you could see a glow from the sky. Everyone in the east bay was able to see it. It you could see flames. The battle for those firefighters, tip your cap to them for containing that area. No one hurt. It was a sixalarm fire that is now fully contained that happened at a residential building under construction near emeryville. Its happening just a block or twoway away from the home depot shopping center. We have been on this breaking news through mornings on 2 since we first went on the air at 4 a. M. Dozens of firefighters and 25 fire engines have been on the scene trying to put the flames out. The big picture on the left hand side is the fire at its height. Flames roaring from that complexion that was under construction. The heat from this fire next to interstate 580 could be felt by drivers on the highway. The fire spread to a nearby building burning five townhomes and an auto body shop. Its not the flames that were pushed by wind. In fact, it was just the radiant heat coming from the massive fire itself that set the townhomes on fire. Mike. In addition to those buildings, several vehicles also caught fire. While we were on air earlier this morning one of the tires on the vehicle actually exploded. Reporter good morning. This fire started roughly around 2 45 this morning. Were whoa loud bang coming from this construction. That explosion happened during one of brian flores live reports. Amazingly, no one was injured as we reported there in any of the fire. This morning we have live team coverage. Brian flores is talking to people forced from their homes by this massive fire. We begin with ktvus alex savidge. Reporter good morning. Firefighters will be out here for a good portion of the day to keep an eye on all the hot spots here with this fire. And there, of course, are many of them. This massive fire took nearly five hours to contain. Its no longer spreading. A live look here at the spot where this fire originally began. Its a building again that was under construction. A fivestory Apartment Building right at 3800 san pablo avenue. This is what caught fire early this morning. Can you see really from this live picture all thats left. Just the scaffolding that was around this building. Pretty incredible to see. We will take you to pictures from early this morning. This fire started just about 2 45 in the morning. It lit up the Early Morning sky. It could be seen from all over. Firefighters came here from across the east bay. This fire, the building itself is on the border, sort of sits on emeryville land and also on land that is in the city of oakland. We had crews here from the Alameda County Fire Department. We had crews here from berkeley, oakland, hayward and other spots in the east bay as well. A sixalarm fire. Many resources from all over to try to contain the flames. Again because of the heat from this fire, the flames, they spread to some nearby buildings, including those five townhomes that burned this morning. The good news is everyone in those townhomes, they were all evacuated early on and so nobody was hurt there. But again five townhomes did burn. A lot of other people who live in the neighborhood nearby, they woke up to see a wall of flames. I talked with one man who was worried about his house catching fire. Embers were raining down, basically, you know . I was worried about houses catching fire down wind. Reporter and this was a hightech firefight this morning. We are showing you some pictures that show the drone that was used by the Alameda County Fire Department this morning to help in this battle against this massive fire. This is the drone that actually belongs to the Alameda County sheriffs office. They put that drone up in the area. It has a thermal imaging camera. They can get a clear picture of where the hot spots are and how the fire is spreading. Thats how they were able to know that the fire was spreading to neighboring buildings. An interesting technique they use. We reported 50 people or so had to be evacuated from that unit of townhomes just next door to this massive fire. All of them sent to a nearby evacuation center, and thats where my colleague brian flores is standing by with their story. Good morning to you. Reporter hey, alex, good morning to you. We continue to be here along san pablo avenue where we do see some evacuees nearby. The red cross is helping them out this morning. Earlier we were at the Emeryville Senior Center where they tell us about 40 evacuees were also along with 10 pets. But those people have been sent home. But as we go to video now, this fire, as you mentioned, alex, was very intense. Lots of people talking about how the radiant heat affected some townhomes. In fact, damaged some townhomes. About five of them. Also some homes along yerba buena street. A woman says her backyard was affected. A tree caught on fire in her backyard, and then nearby there was a shed that housed a car as well that also burned. In total, we counted at least four cars damaged also from this fire this morning. But certainly a lot of people were evacuated were scared because these flames were just huge coming out from this fire that started at 2 45 this morning. Hear from a couple of people who say they were just picking up whatever they could to get out of the building. I came out and it was just orange everywhere. So i woke up my sister who i live with and my roommate and we all just started gathering everything. And then, yeah, we came out and that whole structure was on fire. Tons of people were out here. I mean, it was just like i grabbed my work bag and my fiancee got her purse and thats all we could grab. We had to get out of there as soon as possible. Reporter the gentleman you just heard from lives in an apartment complex next to the one that was under construction. Many of those people were awoken by the apartment manager who was knocking on doors telling people to get out as quickly as they could and gather their belongings. The building next door, the apartment complex was on fire. As we take it back out here live, crews again from oakland fire, Alameda County, hayward, albany all were here this morning trying to put out this six alarm fire. This was contained roughly about an hour ago, guys. Portions of it, as we saw on mornings on 2, collapsed. There is also concern from the crane as well that you saw earlier. It appears that it is stable for now. But crews will be keeping an eye on that, make sure it stays that way. We talked to some construction crews as well, guys, that say that they spent long hours to put this back together. There is nothing left to do except demolish it, start over again. A very busy morning for firefighters, residents in this area. Thank you very much. For that. Joining us now from the scene is alameda fire deputy chief jim call. Thanks for joining us. You pull up on the scene. You see what you have before you. Can you kind of take us through the thought process of how you guys attacked this fire this morning . Yeah. Well, First Arriving crews experienced huge volume of fire. Sixstory building under construction. So they had a large fire volume. They immediately started calling additional alarms because they knew they were going to need a lot of people. Then our number one priority is just making sure we had life hazards taken care of, started evacuating the buildings. Thats what crews initially concentrated on, making sure we evacuated and getting our large hose streams and aerial ladders into service. Talk about those hose streams. You talk about your ladder trucks. At any time this morning did you have an issue in regards to water pressure and getting enough water in that vicinity on the fire . Yeah. There was a time we were flowing so many, we call them master streams. Large hose streams, you know, flowing thousands of gallons a minute. It overwhelmed the system. We were able to contact east bay mud and get the hydrant pressure boosted up. It really didnt affect the fire operation. It occurred very quickly. The increase in pressure. Chief, when you have a big fire like this and you pull units i know that you had units from as far as hayward and albany and berkeley. Even an Engine Company from alameda come in. The rest of theeast bay is stretched a little thin, correct . Well, this is something we train on. You see if from the large fires, wild land fires. We have a mutual aid system that works very well in this county and our state. We train on that. When we send companies out, most departments start recalling offduty personnel to come in and staff apparatus to cover in their stations. But staffing, you know, will move companies around within the organization to make sure districts are covered. I cant imagine anyone was supposed to be in this building at 2 45 this morning. Any thoughts on what may have started the fire . And talk about all the fuel that was available in what was burning. Yeah, the fire is still under investigation right now. Weve contacted outside agencies. The atf. Our investigators. We are forming up a team to do a thorough investigation just because this was such a large fire. Right now we really dont know until we investigate. But the fire grew in intensity because it was all under construction. It was stick framed. Wood exposed. So once the fire got started, it just took off. Chief call, one thing i noticed, i dont think i have ever seen before, is that crane that was there and that the flames were touching the crane and starting to burn it. Did that change the way you attacked this fire at all, and how big of a deal was that . As soon as you guys saw that, my goodness, we have a crane that is in the midst of this fire. I dont hear anything. Looks like we have lost the chief. I was asking him about that because the concern of the firefighters and crew on scene pulling the hose lines and all of a sudden you look up and youre like, uhoh. There is a crane up there. Its such a dense area. I mean, this is building next to building next to building. So certainly that was a concern. And san pablo avenue was closed and still is closed in that area. Also, we had the freeway traffic that was temporarily slowed when the flames were big this morning. People were actually stopping to look at the fire because it was plainly plainly visible. The freeway traffic right there, 980 24 still looking pretty good here. Its moving by the scene. But this morning when i was driving to work i could see the big glow in the sky from this fire. It was clearly visible. Steve told me as he came out of the caldecott, he could see a ball of flames. We are looking at a map as to where the fire is. This is basically on san pablo avenue near west macarthur, and there is still a lot of fire equipment. We have highlighted home depot and ikea to give you a Reference Point as to where the fire is. So our camera was looking back at interstate 980 and 580. Those freeways are doing okay. The traffic is moving well. We will have continuing coverage of this story all day long right here on ktvu, online at ktvu. Com, as well as on our ktvu mobile app. Didnt have a chance to thank them.
