KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am October 28, 2016

Thank goodness weve had you and steve helping us out. Yeah. People know the rain is coming and it will be tough, but we need the rain. What are you going to do. Thats right. We talked about it all week. It is here. In addition to the rain, there is a huge problem on the east eastbound bay bridge. It will take hours to clear the crash scene. Christien kafton is at the scene with the latest. Christian. Christian. Reporter yeah. Good morning. Weve been out here since shortly after 5 00. We can tell you a great deal of progress has been made. Still more work to do. It looks like a lost the vehicles have been cleared or is getting ready to be cleared. It doesnt mean that the work is over. Good morning. Thats correct. Were cleaning up right now from the aftermath of the big rig that jackknifed eastbound, east of 1st street. Shortly we will see the rig and the trailer itself hauled off. After that is done, theyre going to need to come in, clean up all of the debris on the roadway. As you can see on the roadway itself, especially in the 1, 2, and 3 lanes, there is a lot of oil on there that is slick right now. What needs to happen is there needs to be laid down and swept away in order to secure the road. More importantly because of the type of spill that we had, which was the diesel fuel from the rig, we have to bring in hazmat specialists to make sure that the scene is secure before that happens. Were talking about the hazmat crew coming in and checking the Environmental Impact and having sand and some kind of means of absorbing the diesel and oil on the roadway. Correct. You can see the sand being laid down by the fire department. More of that has to be laid down. Then that will need to be swept up before we can open this up to traffic. Reporter all right. The investigation is still underway about this accident. The driver says he may have been cut off by another vehicle. That was the claim at the time. We have not been able to develop any additional witnesses or information that indicates thats the case. So we continue to investigate that. Reporter all right. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Looking at a couple more hours. They have made a great deal of progress. The big rig truck is hitched up. Theyre ready to haul that out of there. Theyre ready to haul the truck out. But, guys, i showed you how slick the road is out here. Theres a lot of work that needs to be done to make sure that the road is safe for drivers to drive on. It will be a couple of hours before they completely open all lanes eastbound on the lower deck of the bay bridge. Christien kafton in San Francisco. Just about that traffic he is talking about. If we look at the map of 101, it is backed up, it was backed up at one point all the way to south city. It is backed up near oyster point there. That exit on that old candlestick causeway and the exit. Which the exit is still there, but the park is not as you know. Northbound 101 as you drive up to the lower deck of the bay bridge and the eastbound 80 connector, that could take you an hour to two hours if youre at the end of the line. 280 is not a good alternate. Give yourself plenty of extra time. Really unfortunate stay home if you can. It takes ten minutes when there is no traffic. The weather is obviously a big reason why the traffic is so bad. Lets go to Rosemary Orozco who is in the weather center. Rosemary. Yes. The main event right now. The heaviest steadiest rain going on this morning. It will taper off as we get into the afternoon. Lets take a look live outside where we continue with gray with skies. We will go straight to the radar. Notice the yellows and oranges south of san jose. Thats where the steady rain continues at this time. Well start in the south bay from the Santa Cruz Mountains. You can see morgan hill, as well as gilroy seeing very heavy rain, along highway 101 and into san jose, san ramon and fremont to the east. If we move farther east, pleasanton, livermore, 880, all wet at this moment. Oakland and alameda getting a break. If we move farther inland east, it is a wet drive. We have steady rain through santa rosa, petaluma and highway 101 and inverness. As i mentioned before, this is going to be moving out and we will be left with isolated showers for the rest of the day. In fact if you look to the west here, you can see behind it over the pacific not a lot going on. So with that said, we are looking at a wet afternoon, but not as bad as we saw this morning. Here is a look at some of the 24hour rainfall totals so far. I am he is i have in a lot impressive in a lot of areas. San jose picking up three quarters of an inch thus far. As we move through the morning, notice by noon time, a big drop off in the rain. In the afternoon commute, looking mostly dry. Mainly cloudy. Maybe a few sprinkles. But thats how the rest of your friday will go. When i come back, we will have a look at the numbers for today and a lot of events going on this weekend, all the way into monday where we have trickor treaters out and about. We have more rain coming but it will miss halloween. I want to talk about what is happening in the north bay. Got an advisory from napa county publics works. There is a rock slide and a tree down blocking Spring Mountain road. Crews are on it. Avoid the area. Spring Mountain Road down because of a rock slide and tree which sounds like wet weather. Yes. It is making it slow throughout the bay area. Throughout the south bay, there were fender benders everywhere you looked. This is near 10th street in san jose. The driver of a pickup truck says a driver cut him off and he hit a puddle and went over the guardrail. Another car was hit and the air bag deployed. Fortunately both drivers were not hurt. Now to scary moments last night when a Campaign Plane carrying mike pence careened off of a runway in new york. People on board the plane said it landed after a bumpy approach. The plane started to slide sideways. It tore through an area meant to stop plane thats overshoot the runway and the plane ended up in a grassy area. No one was hurt and just this morning, pence said he is grateful for the quick action of his pilot and first responders. In the meantime theres a report this morning that Hillary Clinton is considering Vice President joe biden as a possible secretary of state. And the Clinton Campaign is getting some help from the first family. Michelle obama campaigned with clinton yesterday in north carolina. Today president obama will appear at a Campaign Rally for clinton in orlando. We are 11 days away from the election. There are 17 propositions for california voters on the ballot, ranging from marijuana to soda tax sales. Do you wand your option do you understand what your options are . Here is paul. Welcome. Thank you for coming in. I brought in my voter information guide. All 223 pages of it. Your homework. Yes. I have actually done my homework. You mentioned the propositions, 17 of them. 64, whether or not to legalize marijuana. People should go for every proposition. So the idea of these proposition parties, is it to focus in on all of them or get dialed in on to three or four people. It matters how many people you can gather together. What is cool about the website is you can go on there and the reality is if you just educate yourself for an hour or two before you show up at a party, you have five propositions that you understand a little bet. This is something that has been happening around the dinner table, between spouses in bed at night. This is a formalization of something that we have been doing for years. Yeah. People show up and say we study these things. What can we do. It helps to cultivate more community. Nonpartisan, we bring people together. Some parties you dont know each other. Take an hour during the week to study it, do research. And we have tons of resources on the page that you can check out. Come to the party and give us your two, three minutes, maybe five minutes depend how much time there is and have a drink. Yeah. Food is drink food and drink has to be involved. They see this commercial or just cursorily go through it. Do minds get changed sometimes. Yeah. There is an emphasis on representative democracy. So we go in and mark the arrow and walk over the rest of it fumbling over the propositions because we dont have the time to research it. It is encouraging a more informed voter. What happens is you i think for me, you want to vote yes on something and then you do the research and you say i think im going to vote no on this one. Speaking of voting yes. I mentioned prop 64. The yet vote is obviously winning. Do these proposition parties turn into debates . I havent seen that. It could be different parties. You could be a republican or a democrat. It doesnt turn into an argument. No. It is a good time to hang out with people. And someone says here is my two to three minutes. This is what i discovered. Obviously its theres always opportunity for bias. Its not necessarily people giving their bias. Theyre saying this is the research that i have done. I have done the research and this is what i found. After being educated, are people asked to vote . Is there a ballot within the propositional party. 54, 56, the cigarette tax. Lets take a vote after what we have been informed. Thats a good idea. Okay. Not that evening. Thats a great idea. Okay. Perhaps a coorganizer for you, paul. Thank you so much for joining us. Cubs or indians. Cubs all the way. Okay. All right. Thank you for joining us. If you want to learn more about it, go over to ktvu. Com. We have been reporting on the dmv outages across california. Coming up, the only Bay Area Office with problems this morning. The acutrimly rare bacteria found on bart and the municipal the rare bacteria found on bart and the muni. Honeyis the internet back yet . Yesssssssss i need to let her know that i like this. I like like like like. I havent seen a movie based on a comic book in so long. I know. Were over here internet people get at t internet with over 99 reliability. And an everyday price with no extra monthly fees. Keep calm. Your internets on. The mae gave her Top Executive managed aa huge pay raiseet, and a lavish car allowance, run up a deficit, then cut jos for local teenagers, and cut afterschool program. No wonder tchronicle called Mae Torlakson flatout unprepared for the assembly. They endorse tim grayson. As mayor of concord, grayson balanced the budget every yer while doing more for kids. Tim grayson for assembly. All morning long we have been showing you green on the radar because of the heavy rain. Here we have green on the stock market as well. The dow up 70 points. The story is similar on the s p and nasdaq. For the first time a rare bacteria has been found right where passengers sit. Ktvu Investigative Reporter ross palombo has more on what was discovered. So many people on it. Reporter every day thousands pay up to swipe through, step on, reach up and sit down on mass transit. Moving through more than half a million trips back and forth across the bay area. And along the way, its mile after mile of touching and grabbing and scratching and tapping on just about everything. So many folks interact and touch surface snooze also traveling unseen on every surface. You have a lot of transmission occurring. Reporter could be just about anything coming along for the ride. We dont want the spread of diseases happening. Reporter nor thanmore than six months, to discover the down and dirty on the seats, we teamed up with sfu researchers. In general, do you feel these seats are relatively clean . I would think so. Reporter 13 collected samples to scientifically capture, contain, and culture everything and anything for analysis. Thats your sample. Its not just weather. There is bacteria. How much bacteria. How much and what kind. What dont you want to see. This could make someone really sick. It can. And on muni, it can possibly too. These are easy to clean. So, again, they capture. , cultured and contained several samples. Before bringing all of them back to sfsu. And this is not darlene franklins first interesting experiment. Five years ago, in her sterile lab, she tested barts seats back when they were cloth and find high concentration of nine types of bacteria, including Fecal Bacteria and mersa, which can cause lethal infections. It was enough to get the attention of the new york times. But now, five years later, she wanted to know if new seats and new materials would lead to new results. I think its really important when it comes to Public Health that we need to know what micros are traveling out there that can make anyone potentially sick. Reporter six months later, after all of the gathering and growing. How accurate is all of this . Reporter the complete exhaustive results are finally in. I think this is very accurate. How do they compare with the results from 2011. We didnt find any Fecal Bacteria. Reporter what they found was a common bacteria. Is it dangerous. No. Its a common skin microbe. Reporter it comes from bart members sweeping and scrubbing. All cars are lightly cleaned every night. And every four months, all the cars are completely sanitized like this. But the biggest change may be from switching the coverings from wool to vinyl. It is a great move that they did that. Reporter but on muni, there appears to be some sort of movement in the opposite direction. Bacteria again common and relatively harmless. But there was something else. We found this one strain which was difficult to identify at first. Reporter this is it. After analysis, they were finally able to recognize it. We were able to identify it as pigmented. I had never heard of that one. Reporter franklin says it was only found before in the south korea an sea and once in a sick canadian girl. You found unusual and rarishian bacteria on muni. Thats what it sounds like. Could that bacteria be dangerous. We dont know. Isnt that scary . Well, it could be scary depending on your perspective on it. Is that concerning to you . Anything like that is of course a concern. Reporter john is the man at muni responsible for the cleaning of 1,000 cable cars and trains and approximate buses. Munis 800 buses are lightly cleaned every night. Deeply cleaned every 30 days. Yet this and rare bacteria was found. At this point in time, do you feel that those seats are clean enough . Is it enough . We can always do more. Probably provide us an opportunity to do more cleaning. Reporter muni will work with researchers to see if this bacteria is dangerous. How do we get rid of it. What is the exposure. Reporter until then, the bay areas largest Transportation System will still snake through the streets, carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers every day. Trying to hold the part that are less eyed. Reporter both seen and unseen. More research has to be done on it. This is something that we have to keep an eye on in the bay area. I think we should. On a level of 1 to 10, where is your concern . I would say its a concern. So are these buses clean enough to be safe . They are definitely safe. Reporter im ross palombo, ktvu fox 2 news. We did hear back from muni. They say they based their analysis there is no danger based on their analysis is what im trying to say. But San Francisco State University says they will continue to study the bacteria to make sure there is no problem down the road. I have to tell you, if youre a germaphobe, Public Transportation can create a challenge. There are things that you can see with your eyes. Besides germs, we have been asking you throughout the morning on mornings on 2 what is the craziest thing that you have seen on Public Transit . A facebook viewer, joel pascal says, quote, a friend who rides bart every day says her favorite gross thing is the person who takes off his shoes every day and cleans his toes. Pablo tweeted me directlyand told me i literally saw a passenger take out a bottle of tequila and take shots. He followed that with a cigarette. Omg. At least that is not unsanitary. Here is a good one from jason kyle. Two weeks ago, bart was running on time. Bizarre. Get it. So many good responses on facebook and twitter. Keep them coming up. We will share more with you at 9 30. Students returning back to school after the devastated Oakland Hills fire. Coming up, the headlines that ktvu was covering 25 years ago in this weeks flash back friday. Getting behind the wheel for a good cause. Confronted by someone or some people he did not know. The man was shot and died right on his front porch. At this point police are asking for the neighbors help in finding the killer. Specifically theyre hoping there may be Surveillance Video taken in the neighborhood that can help with their investigation and certainly whatever the police have to say we will bring it to you here. Most bay area dmv offices are back to normal after outages that lasted most of the week. Concord is still reporting problems. The dmv updated its website and said that office still cannot do vehicle registration. No word if the office will open later today. Five days ago, 122 of the dmvs 188 offices were affected by the central Computer Software failure. In the past few weeks, we have brought you stories on how cancer has affected lives in different ways. During the cancer treatment, transportation can be a problem. Volunteer drivers provide rides to Cancer Patients. And it is all free. Reporter this blue honda is no ambulance but it is something of a lifesaver. The woman behind the wheel is a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. I feel like i can help people right now. Reporter she is on her way to the san jose home of a woman battling Breast Cancer. On this day, the patient who didnt want us to show her face had an important medical appointment ten miles away but wouldnt have a way to get there and back if it wasnt for the volunteer drivers. I cant explain it. They are good. You feel like theyre your family. Yes. A lot of patients really appreciate what im doing. But actually this is rewarding. Reporter she is one of about 250 drivers in the bay area who use their own cars and drive Cancer Patients to their medical appointments, wait and d
