Transcripts For KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am 20161117

Weeks. Im a sissy when it comes to the cold. I havent pulled the trigger. Maybe tonight. I know we have weather on the way to the bay area over the weekend. A lot of wind associated. I keep thinking Power Outages. We already have a power outage to talk about. San ramon police say there is a power outage in the san ramon area. 26,000 customers are affected. Pg e crews are on scene. Road closures. Yeah. Crow canyon road is closed heading out eastbound away from the freeway. Our alex savidge is showing up. But we do have pretty extreme closures there. Avoid the area if you can because there are big traffic problems there. I talked with my friends yesterday about tom brady. The patriots are in town to take on the 49ers this weekend. The san mateo native tom brady poking fun about deflategate. The controversy. He was suspended four games this season because of it. Theres a new ad for foot lockers week of greatness holiday kind of shopping promotion. Some are debating if this is more of a punch to the nfl commissioner Roger Goodell. Want to give you a setup. Overhearing two shoppers in a cafe questioning how it can get better year after year. Take a look. For the fifth year. Is it possible to keep Getting Better after all of these years. It makes you think what foot locker is up to. Thats an unfortunate mind set that you have there. Just because something is great year after year doesnt mean that something is going on. Questions turn into assumptions and then assumptions turn be into vacation. Why would you punish the weak of greatness for something that never happened. As i mentioned he served a fourgame suspension earlier this season imposed after the nfl said the team intentionally underinflated the footballs in the championship game. Brady never admitted it. He said he was innocent. The debate we were having, do you think it is funny or do you think that Roger Goodell is sitting back and thinking im not a fan of this. It is funny and cute. It hits the right note. Im for it. Let bygones be bygones. I hope Roger Goodell is not thinking that. To me, it means that brady is over it. I dont know if Roger Goodell is a fan. I mentioned the Power Outages and the weather on the way. Lets check in with Steve Paulson right now. Cold start, steve. Mike, you and i had something in common. Click the heater on. I might pull the trigger. You will tonight, sal. We have clear skies. It looks good unless youre up north. Many, many 30s this morning. We will end up with 60s around the bay. Oakland, berkeley, probably one of the warmest. Oakland already 52. Sfo getting off shore breeze. There will be a few that will recover. The temperature difference is pretty extreme. Santa rosa is plus one. Minus 8 compared to 24 hours ago for concord. Down 6 for san jose. You can see a little bit of cloud cover sneaking into the north. If youre up in Mendocino County and lake county, you will see it. There is enough of a breeze that we get that off shore wind. That will help some near the bay. Still 30s. Kelseyville made it to 30 this morning. I saw 44 at bodega bay. Napa was 33. Now 45. There is the rain maker coming in. But not until late friday. And everybody on saturday. We will finetune the details tomorrow. A cold morning. Sunny to mostly sunny. 60s on your temps. I would plan on an okay friday. Then we cloud up and rain moves in on the weekend. Thank you, steve. Youre welcome. President obama is in germany this morning meeting with the german chancellor in berlin. The two leaders right now holding a news conference, part of which we showed you live earlier on mornings on 2. During a news conference, president obama was asked if he is concerned about president elect trumps commitment to nato. I am encouraged by the president elects insistence that nato is a commitment that does not change. And his full commitment to nato as the foundation for International Security i think is very important. President obama has a full day of meetings with the german chancellor today. Tomorrow in berlin, the president will meet with the leaders of france, italy, spain and britain. It is a sixday overseas trip, his final foreign tour of his presidency. Today president elect trump will meet in new york with japanese Prime Minister abe. At the airport in tokyo before flying to the united states, the japanese Prime Minister says he wants to build trust with president elect trump. During the campaign, donald trump threatened to withdraw u. S. Troops from japan and south korea unless they paid more of the cost of keeping u. S. Troops based in their country. This will be trumps first meeting with a foreign leader as the president elect. Now, the japanese Prime Minister will join the other high profile people seen coming and going from trump tower where the Transition Team is putting together his cabinet. Trumps team says reports that the transition process is in disarray is not true and they are taking the time necessary to make good decisions. Joe biden reflected on the difficulty of setting up ad in administration with mike pence in washington. No administration is ready on day one. We werent ready on day one. Ive never met one that was ready on day one. Im confident on day one, everything will be in good hands and will be handled. The most recent speculation is cotton is thought to be in the running for defense secretary. Hillary clinton gave her first speech since conceding the president ial election. She spoke in washington, d. C. I know many of you are deeply disappointed about the results of the election. I am too. More than i can ever express. But as i said last week, our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was about the country we love and about building an america that is hopeful, inclusive, and big hearted. Clinton began her career as an intern for the Childrens Defense Fund that helps kids around the world. Most of her speech focused on the work of that organization. Well, on tuesday, women from the San Francisco based group the young Womens Freedom Center were in washington, d. C. Thats right. Part of a panel called young women leading the way, breaking barriers for girls and by girls. Joining us this morning fresh from their trip to dc is Jessica Nolan and layla, 17 years old. You spoke at that panel. Thank you for joining us both. You filled in the sentence, i dream of a world where what did you tell the white house . I dream of a world where you are heard. Where young women of color, we, you know, we dont have to worry about walking out of the house, depending on others or worrying about being compared to, you know, the other girls out there. You know, where i can walk out the door and not worry about the next person saying you cant do this because thats a mans job or you cant do this because youre a girl. What was that experience like . It was a really great experience. I got to work with a lot of young women there. And i got to chat with them from all over. Like from las vegas, from florida, even maine. So it was a great experience. And jessica, what was your involvement in this . Not just this but the program itself in the bay area. Sure. I have been involved in the young Womens Freedom Center since 1996. I was hired out of Juvenile Hall when i was 16. This Organization Works to lift the voices of young women and girl whos have been marginalized and excluded. Women of color, transgender women, immigrant young women. And we create a space for young women, develop their voice and build collective power to really transform the system that keeps all young women from being free. Can you tell me what challenges young women who perhaps are living in poverty or dont have parents who are helping out, what kind of challenges do those women have just doing normal things, like staying in school, getting a job, things that middle class families take for granted. Uhhuh. Well, theres a multitude of issues. Often young women who find themselves on their own end up in systems, juvenile justice system, foster care systems, and dont have the support and access that they need to thrive. Housing is a huge issue for many of the young women that we work with. Last year nearly 100 of the young women we worked with were homeless. Homeless because they ran away from home . Or why on the streets . At that age. Yeah. When you dont have a lot of opportunities, and you end up in the system, we find that a lot of girls end up in the juvenile and criminal justice system, many have been abused. And simply for acting out in normal response that people do when youve been hurt, trying to survive every day, looking for food, housing. And that many end up working on the underground street economy and being criminalized for trying to figure out how to survive. Your visit to the white house in d. C. Came at a time that your fellow teens in the bay area were walking out of class, marching in the streets, protesting over president elect Donald Trumps plans for the country. You were at the white house at a very interesting time of transition. How did that factor . Im assuming as you were planning the trip, you didnt know who was going to be the next president. When you were there, you did. Did that factor at all into your discussion with your peers . Not really. I mean, when you bring up the walkout, i think of it is a really powerful thing, especially because its youth acting. When it comes down to it, our voices dont really matter in the election. In that you cannot cast a vote . Yeah. It doesnt really matter when it comes down to the vote. I feel like its a powerful thing for the youth, like the students and all to act upon it. Especially because our voices arent you know, we dont count when it comes to voting. We can just act on it and speak up. Can you tell me about your path to the young Womens Freedom Center and what help they gave you . Yeah. So i first learned about the young Womens Freedom Center when i was 15. I was in Juvenile Hall myself. And i learned about it i was still 15, but except this time i was in a group home. And then i recently reconnected with them about a month ago, through my school, which is Life Learning Academy on treasure island. Im really thankful to be working with them. Its a great experience. Like i said, i recently reconnected with them a month ago and im experiencing all of these great things. For you, did you ever imagine making full circle . Now youre helping people where you were when you were 16 . I dont think i imagined that when i was 16 or 17. But it shows the power. Yeah. Of what this program can do. This program is amazing. Growing up in the system, i was in tons of programs. This was the first place where i really learned that i am powerful. My voice does matter. As a director, im glad to be here and make sure that we can continue to lift the voices of marginalized and excluded young girls. Thank you both. Congratulations to your trip to d. C. Your voices are being heard. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having us. No problem. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9. A young woman diagnosed with a rare form of Breast Cancer most people dont know about. Coming up, her story and the hospital she credits for saving her and her unborn son. And a new device that can detect if a person has been smoking marijuana and how one uc berkeley researcher says it can help Law Enforcement and pot smokers. New at 9 00, were learning new detail below zero a fiery crash that jammed up the commute in milpitas today. We brought you live coverage of the crash throughout the morning. The car caught fire after colliding with another car on 880 near a street. We learned actually that was near 237. Pardon me. We learned that three Good Samaritans pulled the driver of the car to safety. One of the people suffered burns during the rescue. The driver sustained serious burns and other injuries. The chp says it is not clear if he will survive. With the crab season officially underway, this was the scene this morning at a crab wholesale distributor in hayward. It is being moved to stores and restaurants in time for thanksgiving next week. Thousands of pounds of crab delivered to the distributor this morning. This is exciting. Really exciting. This is good. This is good for everybody. Especially the bay area and crab feeds. Last year the season was delayed by a toxic algae that led to high levels of domoic acid. Fishers went out with the pods and came back with the crab. Californians approved the use of Recreational Marijuana but it will not be allowed on stanford campus. It must comply with federal law including current drug laws. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law. It will remain prohibited on stanford property, including off campus housing. A lab is creating a buzz with the breathalyzer that can detect both alcohol and marijuana when the person taking it exhales. Ben has more on how it works. Reporter most of us see pot like this. Or like this. But uc berkeley chemist matt francis sees it like this. So this is the thc molecule. Reporter francis has spent the last year and a half looking for pot, looking for it someplace that no one has ever found it before. In a users breath. We had to develop some new chemistry that can actually be done. It was not obvious when we started we could tag this. Reporter it can be affect to a street cop when somebody is driving stoned. I think for most of our officers impaired is impaired. They can see that based on training and experience. Reporter according to the union that represents highway patrol, being able to make an arrest and get a conviction are two different things. Because they dont have a tool like with alcohol, its very difficult for them to say, okay, all of these things that you saw, thats wonderful and you may have been right, officer, but we need to convince a jury. Reporter that would be hound labs buzzing in with an answer. Its a breath test that can detect both alcohol and pot when the person taking it exhales. And thats important because there are already plenty of ways to tell if somebody uses marijuana. But to tell if they smoked pottery sently, if theyre stoned, breath is much better than urine or blood. Thc resides in the mooa for a long time. Sometimes days or even a month. So you cannot use those methods very well to determine if someone has recently ingested marijuana or smoked marijuana. You cant tell how long its been. Reporter dr. Francis has been working on the problem for a year and a half. Mike lynn, the ceo of hound labs, and the guy demonstrating the breathalyzer for us, has been working on this for much longer. We have tremendous interest from not only Law Enforcement and employers who are struggling with this problem, but also the cannabis industry who knows that you cant drive stoned. Everybody really accepts that. Reporter lynn argues that the breathlizer wont be the best defense for pot users who are not stoned at the time that theyre pulled over. And thank you for voting on while we were running that story, we were asking you would you blow into a pot breathalyzer. Many dont blow into a breathalyzer when drinking. 64 said no. how reliable is it. Approximate 6 said sure why not. A lot of questions circling the legalization of marijuana in california. Will smoking marijuana be legal in public areas . And what will the law be for smoking while driving . Our question to you has been throughout mornings on 2, what type of regulations around Recreational Marijuana would you like to see go into effect . So many people talking to us on twitter and facebook. Barbara says not to be able to grow and harvest within so many feet of your neighborhood. Same as cigarettes. Nothing beyond that. Another individual chimed in over 18 sold only at dispen saar s. Thats it. Let the money flow into the schools. You cant smoke it in a restaurant because you cant smoke a cigarette. But can you eat an edible . Thats one of my questions. Let us know your questions and thoughts. We will check them throughout the morning and share them with you at 9 30. The trash hag is ktvu. Brown s and then cheetos. The raiders will take the field on mexico. A junior version of the silver and black. My mother is watching. Your mother is watching. My mother is watching. Back to you, gasia. His mother is watching. Imagine a world where the holidays were about people again. Where doorbusters referred to loved ones pouring through the front door. And the fourletter word that defined the season was love and not sale. What if the only reason to wake up at 3 a. M. Was to spot a reindeer in the sky . And coupons were only used to redeem one more kiss . Thats the world t. J. Maxx, marshalls and Homegoods Stores live in. This morning were meeting a woman diagnosed with the Breast Cancer of the nipple. At the time of the diagnosis, she was 40 years old and six months pregnant. She says she and her healthy baby boy are here today because of the care she received at the Avon Breast Center in San Francisco general hospital. This morning, we are thrilled to welcome her to the 9. Talk about good health. Not just for you but your little boy as well. Yes. Did you ever think that you would see this day, when you got your diagnosis and you hear that you have this belly with the baby inside already . I was hopeful. And i saw a lot of hope at zuckerberg, San Francisco general. You already had three children at home pulling for yo
