KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am December 9, 2016

Very long week for a number of reasons and more than ever we are thankful that you are joining us and starting your day on ktvu the 9. You have been busy. It has been a tough traffic day. Im interesting trouble speakings. Im having problems with the ws and the ss. Im having a problem with airlines considering allowing phone calls on airlines. I have a problem with that. Remember 15, 20 years ago, there used to abe phone there. It was cool because you could put your card in. For 15 you could have a minute. Now all of a sudden people will be on the phone. We will hear a lot of peoples conversations im afraid. Im afraid too. Lets talk about the weather. It will be impacting your weekend. Maybe weekend plans. Steve is here with that. The snow report is not so much really the snow. There hasnt been that much. The snow level is way up. It is getting windy up there already. The wind advisory starts at 1 00 p. M. Good gusts already. Be advised if you are heading up there. You dont have to worry about the snow but worry about the wind. Gusts 70 to 90 Miles Per Hour over some of the higher passes. So the wind advisory for the mountains, at least for tahoe, truckee, northeast california goes from 1 00 p. M. To 1 00 a. M. Again, the wind is already cranking up. Weve had light rain, drizzle, whatever you want to call it. It is moving across San Francisco. Now over to oakland, san leandro, parts of the east bay and richmond, hercules, now over to orinda as well, heading to moraga. So it just keeps going. There are still some parts of marin county as well. And Half Moon Bay and over towards 280. La honda, skyline, highway 35. So underneath this, the high and mid level clouds have cleared out. A few sun breaks in there. 50s to 60 degrees already in san jose. Hayward already 60. So if you can get a little sun, you might get to about 64, 65. Theres just so much cloud cover streaming across. Our next system will be here late tonight and more likely through saturday. Cooler on sunday. Look at all of the moisture streaming up from the hawaiian islands. So much out there. 60s on most of the temperatures. Kind of a mild and muggy pattern. If you get the sun, it will feel tropical like. A mix of drizzle, cloud and sun. Rain on saturday. A break sunday and monday. Another system by tuesday. A big system this time next friday. I love it. Sounds good. Following developing news from San Francisco. City crews are still working to repair a water main break that has shut down a busy intersection. The 12inch water main broke around 3 00 this morning at 4th and howard streets in San Francisco. South of market. Thats right next to the center and right around the corner from westfield shopping center. Ktvus Christien Kafton joins us live from the scene with more on when they expect to reopen the busy intersection. Reporter yeah, sal. All morning long, you and i have been going back and forth on this to make sure that people are aware of this. You can see that traffic is still shut down through the intersection of 4th and howard. What they are doing right now is if caring are coming southbound on howard, they are turning them right on to howard. If theyre coming down 4th street, right on to howard. Take a look to our right. If you take a look, they have a big hole here open. One of the workers just explained to us that we are looking at a water main. That is not be the water main that broke this morning. But it gives you a sense of how complex the job is. Different pipes flowing through the area. That is a water main but not the one that broke this morning. They will be capping that off and changing the water supply and trying to repair that leak there as well. The latest news also is that this will not be a sink hole because the water main was, again, four feet underground. Now that crews are working in the area to control the flow of water and shoring up weak spots. The 12inch water main broke at 3 00 this morning, sending water out on to the intersection of 4th and howard. Public utilities commissions confirming that the pipe was put in place in 1895. And they say that age is likely a factor for it failing. Crews will have to repair that line. Still the road repave. And all of that work is expected to take hours. Right now our best estimate is that we will be doing work right through later this afternoon. Crews have mobilized. They are begun to make repairs. They are going to expose the broken main and replace that section of broken main. Then they will do significant road rehabilitation. Reporter so you can see that you can see that they have really completed the first part of this task. Exposing the water mains, trying to get access to them. They still have to work on repairing the maybes and work on refilling that hole. And then trying to repave it in time for the evening commute. That work is expected to take hours. We will stay on top of this to keep you apprised of whether they get this repaired in time for the evening commute. Keep in mind, it is not just commuters using this stretch of road. If you look behind me, you can see that target is behind me, also the 5th and Mission Garage where a lot of people park when they do their shopping down here in the south of market area. You can expect this will be a major impact for anybody parking, shopping or commuting through this area. Thank you, christian. We will move to our continuing coverage of the deadly warehouse fire. Federal investigators are sending a special team to the fire to find a cause. The atf says the team will create a diagram of the warehouse and try to pinpoint where the fire started. Another atf team of electrical engineers is trying to identify the cause. They believe the cause was electrical but they havent been able to determine the exact cause. Later today, the atf will release more information about its investigation. The deputy says that all 36 victims have been identified. As we have been reporting, some of the people who died in the fire were transgender. The Alameda County Sheriffs Department took the step of bringing in a transgender consultant to help authorities handle sensitive matters as they relate to the victims and families. Joining us this morning is the consultant, Tiffany Woods with transvision working with authorities on the ghost ship warehouse fire. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for having us. A lot of your work involves the name that we use to identify the victims. Sometimes the given name is not what theyre going by now. Unless you have had a legal name change in the documentation, it becomes difficult in situations like this where youre trying to and youre doing everything respectful and to totally represent who this person was and live their life and who they are still and how we want to remember them always. And thats where it gets a little difficult when , you know, one of our three transgender women who, you know, pereshed in the fire, she had changed her name. There was no issue. Two had not. Can i say off the bat. Please. Send my condolences to all of the family members and the victims. Families and the communities and friends in this horrible tragedy. You know, this is not the circumstances that i like to come on television and talk about. But these are critical issues. I want to let everybody know that everybody involved with the recovery scene and the recovery operation, all agencies involved from the beginning have been absolutely incredibly respectful. And it was never a question of not doing it. It is how do we do this. What is the right thing to do. What is the language, you know. And so i just want to put that out from the beginning. Tiffany, have you found any, i dont know, maybe the authorities not being able to know what to do in a situation like this . Do they you know, if someones legal name was Something Else . Do they stick with it . How have they been treating this. Everybody has been treating this absolutely sensitivity and with the respect that these situations deserve. Even if you change the law, we have the respect after death act that was changed a few years ago allowing to reflect the true identity after death. You know, there are instances where bottom line is if there is no corresponding documentation we have the policy and we make sure that we follow it. It is up to the family. You know, if there is no decisionmaking, if there is no document if someone cant produce a document at the time of reporting, here is a legal name change, then it falls back on the family. Thats what happened this time. With farrell pines, riley fritz, the family, she had two chosen names. The community knew her as riley and some communities in the bay area knew her as farrell. So youre trying to be respectful to both sides. The family did choose the chosen name riley. I have been reached out on twitter about those who knew her as farrell and only wanted farrell to be released. When we did that, the family pushed back. This is an emotional subject. Id changes cannot a critical step for transpeople. It is a critical step. It is necessary at transition. It is the next logical step in your transition. It is used for everything, from your identification, drivers license going into a club, insurances, getting a loan. Right. All of that stuff, you know. You need that accurate documentation that reflects who you are. With the gender marker and a name. Its not easy to get there. 450 Court Filing Fee in a community that is economically impacted. If you fill out the waiver form and the court doesnt accept that, where do you get the money. Tons of legal organizations around the country are donating time and resources to pay for the name changes so we can avoid situations like this. It appears to be an emerging issue. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. I want to thank the First Responders, the city of oakland and the sheriffs and Fire Department for bringing me and allowing to address the situation sensitively. We wont always do the right thing and not everyone is going to feel like we did the best job. But we did from the beginning. We will continue on. Thank you for keeping these issues in the media. Absolutely. Thank you, tiffany. It has been an emotional seven days for the victims families, for First Responders and the entire oakland community. And while questions remain about how this happened and how we can stop it from happening again, the one thing that is known is that the 36 victims will never be forgotten. [music] i was watching flames come out of my windows. Everything is gone. Everything is burned up. So many people died. I havent seen him. And there have been flames shooting out of the building for the past 30 minutes. A terrible tragedy took place. In a space, in a building that is permitted as a warehouse. I spent my morning doing what is our priority, and that is focusing on the families. I just dont understand what im doing here. Like i want to go over there. I want to find my brother. I dont know how many more people are left in there. We have no idea. We have no idea. We have no idea how many people were in the building that night. A lot of our firefighters are still kind of getting a sense of the enormity of what just happened. I was driven this morning to come back and just be in that space. Not only with the other people who are here grieving, but just the last place where my friend alex drew his last breath. It looks like the male was trying to protect the female from the fire and the smoke. The male had his arm underneath the female as if they were hugging. It hurts. It hurts. It just takes one careless mistake to make Something Like this happen, man. And i dont understand. I dont understand. [music] i will remember you will you remember me dont let your life pass you by [music] president elect donald trump has angered democrats with his latest nominees for cabinet. The first controversial is scott pruitt to head the epa. Pruitt has been an outspoken critic of the epa. Even filing several lawsuits against the agency. The other controversial pick is andy as labor secretary. As ceo of fast food changes hardys and carls, jr. He opposed raising the minimum wage. Preparations are underway for the inauguration of president elect donald trump in washington, d. C. Crews are busy constructing the inaugural platform where the ceremony will take place. They say everything is on time and on budget. There will be almost 250,000 people that will be ticketed. 1600 of them on the platform. Maybe a thousand in the bleacher area. And then another 240,000 or so that will come through. Construction of the platform is expected to complete by january 15th. Inauguration day of course is january 20th. Even after he becomes president , donald trump will apparently remain involved with his hit tv show Celebrity Apprentice. While he wont host the program, he wants to stay on as executive producer. Political advisor Kellyanne Conway announced this morning that trump is conferring with legal experts to determine if that would be an ethics violation. Conway says it is doubtful that he would accept money for the job. Arnold schwarzenegger, former can california governor, will sit in the board room and fire contestants. Donald trump was elected because of his Business World experience. But many want him to leave that behind. Do you think these potential conflict of interests would impact Donald Trumps performance as president. A number of responses on twitter which is where champagne city says yes, i also believe that trump doesnt have the countrys best interest at heart. He is more interested in how his he and his business benefits. No. Im sure he thought out what if i won f it does, im sure that media will blow it out of proportion. Scott says i worry because of the contrast in resume versus position like scott pruitt for epa director and Wendy Williams in a library. We will share your responses. The hashtag to use is tvuthe9. The San Jose Sharks are teaming up with the San Francisco giants. The special giveaway to fans attending tomorrow nights game. How a teen was able to meet his idol, steph curry. After all come join us this season, at the all new festival of holidays event. Including the new world of color season of light show. Now at the disneyland resort. Golden state warriors pulled out a win over the jazz. They led by as many as 25 points. But the jazz chipped away at the lead. At one point it was a five point lead in the 4th quarter. Then durant took over. Scoring 25 in the 4th, compared to stephs 26. They continue the road trip tomorrow night facing the grizzlies. Steph curry is a hero for a lot of people, especially children. For one los angeles teenager in particular with an unusually difficult life, steph is his everything. Ktvus scott reese has a story about a warriors star making a childs dream come true. Reporter brandon was a healthy baby boy for about six weeks. He started having these movements and reflexes that didnt seem right. We were told it is just a reflection. Babies doing that. Not a big deal. They escalated to a point where there was clearly something going on. What were going on were infantile spasms. The most catastrophic seizures an infant can have. The worst thing for a parent is to watch your off spring suffer and know that you cant do anything about it. The only solution at the time seemed to be what is removing half of his brain. They cant perform brain surgery on a four month old. They wanted him to be stronger. They gave him a medicine to slow the seizures down. Thats all it was supposed to do. I have doctors to this day are scratching their head not only did it slow them down, it stopped them. We got extremely lucky. However because of the malformation he developed cognitive delays. His entire life he struggled. Such was the back drop for brandons childhood. But the family persevered. In time, the kid who was not expected to walk or talk did both. And so much more. To watch him keep developing with the never say never attitude, it has inspired the heck out of myself, my kids, my neighborhood. People are amazed at where he has come from where he should be and where he is now. Sports were not a part of brandons life as a small child. Didnt play them. Didnt watch them. That is until his younger brother jack showed him a video from the internet. Curry, when he started making these unbelievable half court shots. Curry pushes it the other way and got it. I found a video and i showed brandon. And he looked at it and his eyes glowed up the second he saw the video. Ever since then he has tracked every basketball game of curry. He knows all of the players on the warriors. Cognitively we didnt think he was able to comprehend and understand. I was blown away. Curry became a healthy obsession you might say. And then something even more amazing happened. That obsession gave way to i amlation. He came to me and said i want to shoot baskets. He couldnt catch. His balance was off. It was difficult. The ball would bounce and get away from him. It wasnt really easy for me. He kept practicing and practicing and practicing. All of a sudden my kid is playing basketball. I dribble the ball. I cant do it with two hands but i try. I want to be like steph curry. My kid was enjoying a sport and living lifelike a 14year old playing basketball outside with his brothers. I never would have dreamed in a million years. We were told that it wouldnt be possible. Basketball and curry became brandons world. In that world unlike most that of live in, his idol is readily accessible. He said my only wish is to meet steph curry. Might as well say i want to meet president obama. I went on a mission to let him meet his hero. I was connected to the warriors and here we are. He is huge. Glad to meet you. How are you doing . Good. Where do you want to shoot from . Oh. Om . Oh. Im going to play defense one time. Shoot it from right there . Get in there. There it is right there. This was kind of your dream, right . It came true right now. I saw him. I didnt think i would ever see him. Baa i saw him. You played one on one. Who won. Maybe me. I saw you make more shots than he did. For a kid like brandon to be able to get out and play and overcome a lot of obstacles, that means a lot. It gives me more motivation. Keep fighting and keep doing it. I cant believe it. Im having an out of body experience watching my kid throw the ball with steph curry and make it. He had a few great shots. It gives him the sense that he can be normal. The self confidence that he gained today is priceless for me. Absolutely priceless. It restores my faith in humanity to be able to give my child a gift that he
