KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am May 10, 2017

The oval office. He said because he was not doing a good job. Who did he say that to. Henry kissingg. R was in the office. Interesting. Did you see your twitter timelines explode when this happened. Yes. It was incredible. I was on there talking about our giants. And it did go down. It kept going. It kept going. And it was just and it keeps going today. Yes. Obviously a lot of interest in what is going to happen next. There is a lot of talk on twitter and disbelief and anger by lawmakers in the bay area and beyond. Some lawmakers are showing support for the president today following his sudden firing of the fbi director james comey. The action came in a onepage letter yesterday. In it the president said he was following requests from his attorney general and Deputy Attorney general who criticized how comey handled the Hillary Clinton investigation. It is a sharp contrast to comments that the president made in november while on the campaign trail. And i have to give the fbi credit. That was so bad what happened originally. And it took guts for director comey to make the move that he made in light of the kind of opposition that he had where theyre trying to protect her from criminal prosecution. Ecution. You know that. It took a lot of guts. And now the question is who will replace comey and what will happen to the investigation into russias alleged involvement in the 2016 election . Ktvus allie rasmus has been following the story. And the call for the independent investigation. Allie. Mike, you referenced it but just a few minutes ago, President Trump making his first comments on this firing. You can see in this video were about to show you, he was meeting with henry kissingger in the oval office. An unexpected meeting between the two men. When asked at the beginning of the photo op why comey was fired, mr. Trump told them simply quote because he was not doing a good job. He didnt say anything more than that to the press pool in the room. You could hear in the background the people in the room telling the reporters thank you and pushing them out of the way. There are calls for an independent special prosecutor to now take over the russia election investigation. Those calls coming from mostly democratic lawmakers but also a few republicans. Up until he was fired yesterday, james comey had been the top official leading a criminal investigation into whether there were any ties between the russian government and the Trump Campaign during the election. Comey apparently found out that he lost his job on tv before he received his official termination letter. Mr. Trump said in that letter it was attorney general Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney general who wanted to fire comey. Why did they recommend he be fired . In a separate letter he explains comey was wrong to speak publicly about the email investigation back in july. Thats when comey announced he would not seek criminal charges against clinton. Because of that unconventional announcement, the fbis credible suffered substantial damage. It is something that mike pence referenced when he first spoke about comeys firing. Back to a place where we move past the difficult politics of the last year that have swirled around director comeys leadership. And we can move back to a place where every american can know that the fbi is able to do its job. Then the question becomes why didnt the president fire comb knee january . As soon as he became president . Well, democratic lawmakers say this is about comey investigating the Trump Administration for possible ties to russia. At a minimum, the decision to fire comey raises questions about the appropriateness and timing of firing the person in charge of an investigation that could i wont say would but could implicate the administration. Now, some republican senators also raising questions about the timing. Burr a republican on the Senate Committee put out a statement saying i am troubled by the timing and reasoning of jim comeys termination. It further confuses an already difficult investigation by our committee. Now, in response to this uproar, President Trump sent out several tweets over the last 12 hours defending his decision. The being doctors had said some of the worst things about james comey, including the fact that he should be fired. Now they play so sad. In another tweet, mr. Trump says james comey will be replaced by somebody who will do a better job bringing back the spirit and prestige of the fbi. Now, comey coincidentally was to testify before the Judiciary Committee tomorrow not on the Russian Investigation specifically. Now it wont happen anymore. White house Officials Say President Trump will fill the vacancy quickly with an announcement possibly coming out as late as as early as the end of this week. Back to you guys. Allie rasmus live in the news room. Thank you, allie. The white house is keeping quiet about who could replace comey. There is a list of potential candidate former new York Police Commissioner kelly is one much. New jersey governor chris christie. He prides himself as a law and order republican. Tray gouty chaired the house investigation into benghazi. Political analysts say david clarke is a wild card. He campaigned for donald trump during the election and appears regularly on conservative talk shows. Joining us right now is brian sobel. Good morning to you. Good morning, mike. Another day, another development. Exactly. Ive got a question. Sally yates gets fired. James comey gets fired. Is there a pattern, do you think, that is developing that if you cross or question the president maybe too much, your job is in jeopardy here . Well, i would say those are two different situations. Yates was a holdover from the obama administration. They typically are oftentimes removed. Obviously the fbi director being removed is a very interesting turn. Of course, mike, you know, speculation by insiders in washington, d. C. Was that had Hillary Clinton been elected, she would have fired him as well. Regardless of how we got to the firings, in the end many see this as a con salutations of power. Power consolidation of power. Well, the directorship of the fbi has always been a pretty controversial thing. Going back to the first director of the fbi, hoover who was highly political and served under six president s. Probably five of whom really disliked him. So its going to be interesting to see where we go with this, gasia. I dont know that it is a consolidation of power as much as it is that the president does have the right a political appointee to have the fbi director of his or her choice. A lot of people are saying the president and his staff were thrown off or surprised by the reaction this had when it came out. How did is that possible . How did they not know it would cause this reaction . Is there anyone on the president s staff who has the guts to say, mr. President , maybe right now is not the right time to do this . Well, to the first part of your question, so Many Democrats were calling for comey to be fired. Perhaps the administration thought, okay, you know, we will be able to fire comby and move on. And there will be some uproar but it will be confined to a few people. Well, i think the democrats have looked at this as an opportunity to say what the president was doing was trying to close off a probe. Thats not going to happen. I mean, the probe is going to go on. And sal, it is just it is one of those things where its you know, the timing of it is curious. But i guess maybe there was no right time. Timing curious. I mean President Trump said today in the oval office he was asked why he did it. He said because comey was not doing a good job. I mean, was the president s belief that the fbi was just digging a little too deep into this potential connection between, you know, trumps associates during the campaign and russia . Well, time will tell, mike. But at the end of the day, theres theres so much focus on this probe that i dont know that one person and the person of james comey is the determinant on this. And so if anything, President Trump may have raised the you know, the level of inquiry. This may result in a in a special counsel that will take a look at it. Should the president come forward and to the American People and give more specifics about why he terminated the fbi director . Or is he just not going to talk about it . Well, i think the release of the of the letter from the deputy ag talking about why comey was released, i think that is probably the administrations answer to this. But, you know, the president has to come out and spend a little more time talking about this. Absolutely, mike. Thank you for joining us on the phone, brian. We will move to the question of the day which is do you agree with the president s decision to fire the fbi director, james comey, yes or no. Lets look at the poll results. Overwhelmingly we saw in the 8 00 hour and here during the 9 most of you, 77 of you say no, you do not agree. 23 at this moment say yes you do. Just yesterday the left wanted him fired. Now theyre having a meltdown. They want to complain about everything trump. Tess says question back. Can comey now talk freely about what he knows . If so, number 45 should be shaking in his shoes about now. Eric says no one has faith in him doing the right thing. He had to go. We will keep taking your responses throughout the day and share them at 9 30. Thanks for using ktvuthe9. Dont forget to meet us at noon. The Investigation Continues today after the body of a missing College Student was found in the river of center county. It was found sunday. Yesterday authorities identified her as 20yearold allie yoman from yuba counsel too who was last seen near the feather river. Her pickup truck was found not far from where the body was found. Family and friends are devastated by the news. It is so heart breaking because you grew up with that person. You share memories and you end up loving that person as part of your own family. So far authorities are not saying whether or not she was a victim of foul play. It was about this time yesterday that we brought you breaking news on the 9 that a jury had found garciatorres guilty of kidnapping and killing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. Right now jurors have about a week off before they return for the penalty phase that starts next tuesday. Garciatorres was con subjected on all counts, including first degree murder and found guilty of attacking three other women in 2009. Sierra lamars parents say the guilty verdicts bring a sense of relief after sierra disappeared five years ago. Were just grateful and blessed that the jury came up with a verdict that they did. And its going to be a safer world because of them. Sierra lamar vanished on her way to school in march of 2012. Prosecutors told the jury that her dna was found on a robe in garciatorres car and his dna was found on her clothes found abandoned in a field near her home. Sierra lamars body has not been found. Her father joined us yesterday on the 4 on 2 and talked with our heather holmes. We talk a lot about in these cases closure much does this verdict bring you some closure . Not really closure. I dont think we will ever have closure. But but, you know, it helps it helps a lot. But, yeah, i dont think we would ever have closure. Not without sierra. Garciatorres showed no reaction when the veries were read. His family and his attorney refused to talk to reporters. The jury will decide if he gets the Death Penalty or life in prison without patrol. It is relatively easy for officers to figure out if a person has had too much to drink. Now the chp is rolling out technology that will help get drugged drivers off of the roads. Alex savidge is live with how that works. Alex. Reporter good morning, sal. Uncharted territory in a lot of ways. A lot of Police Departments across california right now are training officers on the best ways to spot potential drivers who are under the influence. And later today, the chp are going to demonstrate new technology that can be used to test possible drugged drivers. These are called portable saliva tests. They screen for at least six different types of drugs. Later today in sacramento, the chp and the Sacramento Police department will be doing a demonstration outside of the capital to show exactly how these tests work and to show how officers possibly screen for drivers who may be under the influence of drugs. Things potentially could get more complicated in our state because voters, remember, legalized the Recreational Use of marijuana just last year. The trouble is theres no presumed level of intoxication for drugs unlike the. 08 blood level that we have for alcohol. And i asked the chp this morning about that issue. The challenge might be later on. For us as law enforcement, were not concerned with that. Our job is when we find somebody driving under the influence we pull them over and arrest them and remove them from the roadway. Even for alcohol right now we may not know what the blood alcohol level is when we arrest with you you but we believe you are under the influence of a substance affecting your ability to drive. Reporter and lawmakers are getting involved here as well. San mateo state senator hill is trying to crack down on drugged driving with two bill thats are now moving through the capitol. One of the bills would make it illegal to smoke pot in a car. And the other would lower the threshold for Alcohol Consumption if a driver also has drugs in their system. We spoke about those is saliva tests. They are gaining acceptance among a number of Police Departments. A lot of departments starting to use the tests because just last year a judge accepted those results during a court case. But in terms of officers in the field, we spoke with the chp officer and he says that driving impaired is driving impaired, whether under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In terms of prosecution, things could get a little more complicated when you try to figure out from a legal standpoint how high is too high when youre behind the wheel. Alex, did the officer tell you how many people they have have arrested for being high or do they arrest a lot of people for being high . Reporter the officer did say that they have seen an uptick of sorts in the number of people that they are finding who are under the influence, especially of marijuana. And who are behind the wheel. And that is not necessarily a correlation with the voter approved law last year that legalizes the use of recreational marijuana. They are seeing an uptick in that. And obviously that is something concerning. Again, the point is no matter what youre under the influence of, alcohol or drugs, the same dangers exist if you get behind the wheel of a car. Alex savidge live in oakland. Thank you, alex. The plan to charge driver whos want to twist their way down lombard street has hit a temporary snag. The board of supervisors was scheduled to decide if the city should spend a quarter Million Dollars to study operations to make lombard street a toll road. The vote has been postponed until may 23rd. Supporters of the plan say the delay will not affect the study but something needs to be done. The number of cars on lombard street has nearly doubled in the last 18 years. What do you think of that, charging tourists to go down that stretch of road . Im not a fan. If you get charged for driving down there, maybe you might charge me it is a slippery slope. You want them to spend time in the city. They cant legally do it until they change the law for cities to charge tolls. I feel for people who live on lombard. Traffic is incredible and it has increased and you have to do something. But i dont know if charging people. It is not the spirit of San Francisco. Im not on board. Its not the spirit of the city. Dove has rolled out limited editions of body wash. Not everybody is on board. Take a look at the bolls. They come in varying shapes. The idea is that women come in varying shapes as well.
