According to a new report by the San Francisco transportation authority, every week dade, uber and lyft vehicles log more than half a million miles on city streets. New data suggests all of the trips taken by the Ride Sharing Services are significantly adding to congestion on city streets. Recently i took a look at the problem. Reporter slow traffic is nothing new in San Francisco. There is a new source of congestion never seen before. You knower and lyft adding thousands of drivers to city streets. We sit here on the corner of market and 10th and watch as the cars went by. Most of them had an uber sticker on them. According to city records, San Francisco has 45,000 you knower and lyft drives. To put that into perspective, new york city, eight times big as an estimated 155,000 ride share drivers. Uber and lift are regulated by the California Public utilities commission. It is unclear what power the city of San Francisco has over the companies, including the ability to limit how many ride share drivers are on the streets. But the city says what it can do is make sure that existing laws are being followed. San francisco has always been a city that welcomes ing. Reporter nuity. We see the benefit that Ride Sharing Companies provide. But convenience cant come at the cost of safety for everyone in the city. What were trying to do here is really strike the right balance. Reporter this month the San FranciscoCity Attorneys Office ifed records from on demand companies and once to know how many miles are logged by drivers, if the drivers receive training and if the companies provide incentive thats attract drivers to San Francisco. Critics say so many drivers on streets is not only slowing traffic but results in fewer people using public trapsity and changes the quality of life in the city. I get that people are trying to make money. Uber and lyft has done a great job gallon vannizing the workforce. The problem is in the city when there is congestion, invariably at the center of it an uber or lyft driver that doesnt know the city. I think the thing that kind of ticks me off the most is the double parking. That gets to me. Especially if im like driving my car in either the far right or left lane and theres a car that just like stops in front of me. Reporter the Ride Sharing Companies say they will cooperate with the city. Uber issued a statement that read in part, were more than happy to work with the city to address congestion but it should be a comprehensive solution, including construction, the citys population increase, and the rise of online delivery services. Some who use Ride Sharing Services say they are willing to tolerate slower traffic in exchange for the experience of on demand transportation. Like i use it all the time. And so i tell myself mentally im okay with that. Im okay with them double parking if like im going to use the service. Reporter youre likely to continue seeing ride sharing cars on the roads. The question of the day is about sals report. Do you consider the increase of ride sharing cars on city streets a nuisance, a convenience or both. We see 59 say it is a convenience. Only 41 say it is an inconvenience. Using lyft since they started. The only way to get to appointments and physical therapy after multiple surgeries. Cabs fail to come or are late. Grace says im a lyft driver. What about those people who gave up their cars. Which means less cars on the roads. Theyre an absolute nuisance unless im the one taking the lyft. Tongue in cheek there. Thank you for being honest and using the hashing to ktvu. We have been reporting on the shooting throughout the morning. The attack left House Majority whip scalise injured and the gunman is dead. Joining us on the phone is jackie spear. Thank you for joining us, Congress Woman. Your reaction first. Well, we just came from a briefing. The whole caucus, democrats and republicans. Very emotional, sobering. Standing ovation given to the Police Officers, Capitol Police. A lot of discussion about the importance counting down the rhetoric. We all held hands and prayed together. And were now on our way to the house floor where there will be comments made by the speaker and the leader and we will adjourn for the day. Theres a great deal of concern for peoples safety right now. And i think it is really important for the members of congress to stand together, to show the American People that we will not tolerate a kind of violence and hate speech and that we will we will rise above it. Congress woman, sorry to interrupt. I had to ask because you just had briefing with other members of the house. I imagine security for members of congress was brought up as well. Scalise had his own security detail because he is majority in congress. Most do not. Do you think that will change. Would you like to have security . Well, the issue is when a large group of house members are together, i think a real question has to be asked should there be Capitol Police or police protection. Because in fact they become a target. As individuals, we we, you know, do not have any kind of security detail. Only the leadership of the house. So it is the speakers, the majority leader and the minority leader and the whips that have that kind of protection. Whether or not that is something that we want to look at, i you know, i dont want to become a police state certainly. But i think that personal protection is serious. One member said she was church on sunday and they come and put tomb stones on her lawn and picket her outside of the church. So, look, weve got to convey to the American People that we can differ in terms of policies without creating a hateful and, you know, vicious environment. I was going to ask you about that. Do you think that the political atmosphere in this country has directly led to these acts of violence or is it that, you know, unfortunately there are disturbed people out there who will do this. And no matter what, its going to happen . Well, i think theres both. I think the president needs to step up and show that we can differ without calling names and being vengeful and that will be distributed throughout the populous. And i think we as members of congress can show by our own personal affects that we are capable of being dignified and respectful of others opinions and work to common ground. I think you said your congressional work is being adjourned for today. What does tomorrow look for you and your colleagues and friday . Are there any immediate changes that youre learning of . No. I dont believe so. In fact, there was a decision made that the baseball game that is a traditional summer event that takes place and is a Charity Event will go on as scheduled tomorrow. All the members applauded that. It is a traditional that congressional baseball game that has gone on for more than a hundred years. It is seen as a nonpart nonpartison things that democrats and republicans take place in. Next week is the womens game. We serve on the same team against members of the press for charity. Lets hope this can be the start of a moment. Congress woman, where were you when you heard about the shooting . And did someone come to check on your safety, you know, after i assume the safety was ramped up after this happened. Well, it was around 7 00 in the morning. I was just getting ready for work. And i got a text from a member of my staff. And then a number of texts. There was no one who came to my apartment. All right. Jackie spear, thank you for joining us on the phone this morning from washington, d. C. We appreciate it. Again, we will mention briefly the update to the breaking news. The attacker who opened fire at republican lawmakers at an Early Morning baseball practice, the attacker has been shot and killed by police. Scalise was wounded and is in the hospital recovering. It is breaking news that we will stay on throughout the day on ktvu. Now we bring you back home to breaking news in San Francisco. Heavy Police Activity in 17th and vermont. Ambulances, Police Officers, et cetera, as we work to figure out exactly what is going on. Sal, can you talk about the pocket of the city . What is happening here. 17th and vermont, a lot of Tech Companies there. Near the Design Centers and right under the freeway, the 80 split and 101. It is a pretty busy area. It used to be an area that no one went to. With all of the companies popping up in this area, theres a lot of construction there. So it is a good area to avoid with your car. Coincidentally when i was doing my uber story i was down in this area. A lot of uber drivers hang out here waiting for their rides. This is a busy area. A lot of the streets, 17th is a major one but 16th will be clogged up. Brendan and townsend in that area. It is a good area to avoid in general, especially with your car. You see sheriffs units and the Fire Department and police all active at the scene. We should mention were gathering more information about what is transpiring here. There is conflicting reports of what is going on. The message overall is it is an area to avoid because of the heavy Police Presence. You can see from the live picture of the city streets at 17th and vermont, many of the streets in the area are closed off. We have a crew on the scene gathering more information as we speak.
