There was a call before 5 00. The fire has friendship to 2 alarms grown to 2 alarms. Water is shot at the flames from one of the rigs on the ground. A number of firefighters on the ground. The intersection is blocked off. When we get an exact lowcation, how many buildings are involved. This is largely a residential area. Theres a lot of new construction, a lot of buildings, a lot of retail on the ground floor. Were trying to find out where the fire is, if any people are evacuated. As we look at the pictures, its 5 00, a lot of people home at this time. It looks like the building where this is happening is a building under construction, im wondering if the pilot could pan over and show us where at t park is in relation to this. China basin is near at t park and again, you can see, this building right now is fully involved. Its next to what appears to be a condo complex or apartment building. Theres a lot of buildings that are packed into this area. They will try to keep this from spreading. Maybe we can see where this is specifically. I cant recognize it right off the bat here. Its not far. That may be the at t parking lot. Theres another shot. You can see this is not far from the freeway and a lot of construction. China basin a lot of construction, that area has taken off since at t ballpark was built with New Buildings on a monthly basis. Now you can get a better sense of where this is, theres the ballpark right to lefthand side. It looks like just south of at t park. That smoke is going up, it heading, gosh would that be north ward over the city. Weve been talking to bill martin, hes talking about the wind advisory in parts of the area. Bill if we are able to bring you in, where the smoke is going, what can you tell. The equipped is blowing today, they are coming out of the north east, they are blowing the smokeout to sea and not as strong in the area. The strongest are out by antioch, this area not fueled by massive wind. But the smoke plume was blowing off to ocean beach and San Francisco. We have mindy from San FranciscoFire Department on the phone. Are you there . Im here. Where is this happening. This looks like a serious fire. Yes. Right now weve got a twoalarm fire at four the and china basin. This is a building under construction. We are getting reports from the scene that the fire is moving down to block. Its apt to go to a threealarm fire. Are there any evacuations. This is a building under construction, i know they immediately started deploying the ladder pipes. Its a defensive fire at this time. As you were telling us that the fire is threatening to spread to other buildings, it looks like theres at least two buildings involved. We see active flames, a lot of dark smoke, home buildings involved . Actually, all i have is a report is that its moving down to block. I cant answer how many building are involved right now. They have not reported that. Whats your best advice to people thats where im heading home to. Is this a get out as a precaution. I cant imagine you want people to wait around. We want people to stay out of the area. You know, we need to get in and get our work done and try to get this out as soon as possible. This is a twoalarm fire, as we watch it is flames are growing. At what point do you call in a third or fourth alarm. Thats up to the actually, it is now a three alarm fire. They aretis patching a third alarm. When a building is under construction opposed to a building that completed. Being it is under construction, does that make it more difficult to fight . Yes. Everything is its up to us to get this under control. On i was work active or had it wrapped up. I dont know. We see a number of firefighters. How many crews are on hand. When we have a threealarm fire, we have nearly 100 firefighters. But the third alarm assignment has yet to arrive. We probably have 65 people on scene at the moment. This is a huge building under cop instruction. How likely the fire could spread across the street. Is that a realistic scenario or will they contain it to a single building. It is a possible scenario, one of the things they focus on when they are attacking the fire defensively is protecting the surrounding structures, thats in the game plan. Did you have a question. I was watching the smoke plume, when we started the fire it was white. Now the plume from the rooftop camera and the live chopper 2 is black. It is burping oil products. More billowing and aggressive. Another thing, the winds from the east today are helpful, its not as windy but helpful this time of day this time of the year the winds would be out of the northwest and the winds howl. It would be more of an issue if the winds were coming from the typical direction. The winds are east, blowing 10 miles an hour, fife to 10 miles an hour, the smoke is blowing toward twin peaks and out to sea. This is probably about maybe four blocks from the caltrans station and six blocks from at t park. In case you are joining us here, we have breaking news, a massive fire burning on a huge building. Looks like an apartment or condo complex that is under construction in the china basin area. At 4th and china basin. Not far from at t park. It gone from two alarms to 3 alarms. From what we have looked at, it looks like the fire is getting worse opposed to getting better. If we have lieutenent tallmadge on the phone, are you with us. Yes i am. Give us your thoughts, when were trying to read the picture from inside the studio, is this an accurate assessment. It appears the fire is growing. When you see the light smoke, they have water on something thats burning. Thats a good sign when its dark, that means the fuel is burning. Its going back and forth, probably more fuel is catching on fire. The flames are growing in their intensity, we can see that from the pictures. At what point would you go to a fourth alarm. Who makes that decision and why . The Incident Commander would make the final call, but it anything on the scene recommends calling a fourth alarm. The Incident Commander would take that direction. Are there concerns with a building under construction versus an occupied building. Are there dangers that come with a building like this thats not as solid as one thats complete. Were approaching this is in a defensive manner which takes the safety of the firefighters into consideration. Were not sending anyone into the building. Were approaching it from that stand point. The bad news theres no suppression system in these buildings. The fuel will burn until we get it under control. Lieutenent hang on. Bill go ahead. As we watch this fire, it not often we see a fire build. Theres a lot of firefighters on scene. Its a building under construction, buildings in the San Francisco they are set up for fire safety. Sprinkler systems. Heres a building under construction perhaps the Sprinkler System is not in place. Typically they would get a handle on it quickly because of the fire protection. This seems to be increasing in its intensity. That goes to what you were saying about the nature of this firefighter versus occupied building. Anything else you can share with us. New information in the past couple minutes. It just one building thats directly involved thats burning. Fourth and china basin but it is moving up to the block. As we can see from the picture, its a very densely populated area. The buildings are tall and close to each other. To your knowledge is there a second building involved at this point . That has not been reported from where im at. It makes sense that the fire is very large, that is a possibility that could happen at any time. We are bringing our hose tender out there, comes out with a couple how to feet of hose line to get more water to the fire. Were aware this is a lightweight construction building, theres a high danger of roof collapse with this particular building. Can you see live pictures of the fire at all . I have accessed live pictures yet. It is roaring through this building. It looks like it is just a guest met fest mitt. They will fight this fire defensively. At this point, us the it look like they will be able to get a handle on it or is this the type of thing where the fire may have to burn itself out of it doesnt show signs of slowing down. They will surround it in one manner or another. When they have all the equipment they need to do that to minimize the spread of the fire. Again, we have access, were showing our viewers a live picture of the fire. Would you be putting crews on neighbors buildings to put water on the fire from above or is that too risky . You know, i would have to take a look at the building and see what that situation is to be able to even guess at that. Ive got live pictures up now, and this is definitely a very active fire at the moment. When you look at the live pictures, what do you see . I see a lot of fuel burping right now. The photos i have right now are not very close up. Its difficult to tell how many buildings are involved. I did see an area where they have water on the fire. The building is under construction, too dangerous to go inside. Is the thought to protect surrounding buildings or try to save this building . No, absolutely protect the structure not involved. That would be the goal. I tonight snow if we can do this in the control room. Our roof camera is show be the plume. When you look at it from across the bay thats massive. When we started this that was white smoke and dark smoke. It quadrupled in size. The winds are not out of the northwest as they would be this time of the year. You would have more of an issue fighting with the stronger winds. Its gone to 3 alarm. When we started it was two alarm. When it first started you could see some flames and now it looks like the whole side is on fire. I would guess that just in the amount of time weve been watching it, it has doubled in size, perhaps trippled in size. We would like to thank lieutenent tallmadge for her time and information on this breaking news. David stevenson, were waiting to get david on the phone. Hes close to fire. Im expecting he will tell us how it feels. I understand he will be close to whats happening. Looking at this. I guess down in san jose we had the big mall. We had a big fire. It burned almost to the ground. Fire suppression techniques are very good. Perhaps they are not in place. You dont have to sheet rock. It looks like a big triangle, when we started it was on one section. Now the smoke and flames have spread throughout the entire building. The flames are roaring through this. Youre right, you dont have that suppression system inside. Now they are trying to protect the building across the street. This is a dense area, buildings on 2 out of the three sides of the building very close. Lets bring in dave id stevenson live at the scene. What can you see. Left side, its a huge plume of smoke, quite a bit of construction as you can see from chopper 2 in this area here. I w
