We begin with the tragedy on interstate 5. We have updates on the bus crash where at least ten people were killed and several high school students. Good afternoon. Im tori campbell. Were hearing new details about the crash and the Rapid Response by emergency crews to reach and care for the injured passengers. Alex savidge is in the newsroom with new information released just in the past couple of hours. Good afternoon. Chp officers just updated their investigation a short time ago. They are going over safety records, doing mechanical checks as they try to figure out what led to this deadly crash last night. Authorities now say five of the ten victims were students from l. A. Area high schools. That charter bus was taken the teens on a college visit. Investigators gathered evidence throughout the night at the scene of this deadly crash along i5 near chico. Late this morning, the charred wreckage of the bus and tractor trailer were removed from the roadway. And in a morning news conference, chp investigators said there are trying to figure out why the driver of the fed ex truck lost control on the freeway yesterday and slammed head on into this charter bus that was filled with high school students. We dont know whether the fedex driver had fallen asleep, whether he experienced a mechanical failure with his vehicle or whether there was a separate collision on the southbound side that caused him to lose control. Well be looking into determining how exactly that happened. Federal investigators will also be looking into this deadly wreck. A team from the ntsb boarded a plane first thing this morning in washington, d. C. Headed here to california. The charter bus was carrying High School Seniors from all around the l. A. Area and was going to visit Humboldt State university. The president of the cal state system said the victims would have been the first in their families to attend college. Were doubly saddened by the fact many of them are first generation and students from low income who have done all of the right academic things and had their dream of going to humboldt take state taken away. Of the ten people killed, five were students, three chaperons, the other victims, the drivers of the bus and the big rig. More than 30 people were rushed to various hospitals after the crash. Some of them with serious burns. Many survivors say they kicked out windows to escape the burning bus. The coroner in glenn county said because many of those victims were badly turned, it may take some time to positively identify them. The chp also said they are still looking for witnesses in this case. Anyone who may have been driving in that area and saw what happened in the moments before that truck lost control. Jonathan gutierrez tweeted this self selfie tweeted this picture. He tweeted a photo of a bus early yesterday morning before he and other students left to go up to Humboldt State. During the 12hour ride, the teen tweeted out a picture from on board the bus. He chose to sit in the back row, a decision that may have saved his life. Suddenly, his bus was hit head on by a big rig. He said he heard screams and felt the impact. He tweeted this photo after climbing out of a window to escape the burning bus. That post read, cant believe this just happened. I was asleep and next thing you know, i was jumping out for my life. The 17yearold had only a few cuts and bruises and wanted to let everyone know he was okay. The Los Angeles Unified School district says the trip was not organized by the district. School Officials Say theyve been working to identify which of their students went on this trip. Very saddened by this traffic accident. Very tragic. But we currently have three groups heading to the crash site now to meet with parents. Meet with students to focus on giving these students gebting these students back getting these students back to l. A. 19 were from los angeles schools. They say two other buses were traveling and have arrived at Humboldt State. Were learning more about the Companies Involved in the tragedy. Heres what weve learned about the bus company. Its called silverado stages. It has 142 drivers and a good safety record. Its had two crashes one with an injury, one towaway. Neither were fatal. Three violations, one for excessive weight and one for not having a medical certificate. They have a statement on their website. The misdemeanor could be set down to the courts for a trial date and the felony could be set for a preliminary hearing. He was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly leaving the scene after he hit a bicyclist and crashed into a witnesss car. Police say illegal brass knuckles were found in his mustang. Yesterday, the reputation of Colin Kaepernick came into question when tmz reported he was being investigated for possible Sexual Assault for an alleged incident at a miami hotel last week. Ktvu has the Police Report and in there, theres no mention of Sexual Assault and police arent even sure if a crime was committed. With kaepernick being mentioned in the Police Report and two other 9ers having legal troubles, some fans are worried about the images. It definitely does affect their image. I think there should be counseling or guidance to help these young guys deal with the success, the money, the name theyve come into it fame theyve come into it. When up have a lot of money and time on your hands, you can get into trouble. Reporter in the Police Report, the woman says she did not have sex with kaepernick. He and his teammate, quinton patton, are not facing charges. This morning kaepernick tweeted the charges made in the tmz story and other stories ive seen are completely wrong. They make things up about me that never happened. I take great pride in who i am and what i do but i guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up. Citys soon to be tallest building will be called sales force tower. The 564 naming rights deal was announced three hours ago. The cloud commuting company will occupy most of the towers 61 floors. This is new video of a key figure in the corruption case, Keith Jackson arriving in court this morning. Earlier this week, yee and jackson both pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from wire fraud to conspiracy to illegally importing weapons. This morning, the judge is expected to review the evidence in yees case. Federal prosecutors now say there plan more charges in the case involving a total of 28 defendants but they wont say whether any of the new charges will be against yee. In south africa, it was another day of intense questioning and courtroom drama in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial. He faced more relentless cross examination on the witness stand. Once again, prosecutors grilled him about why he shot and killed his girlfriend, reeva steevkamp last year. He maintains he accidentally killed her thinking she was a nighttime intruder in his home. Australian authorities are offering conflicting statements as to whether they are close to finding the missing Malaysian Airlines plane. President of Humboldt State university spent the Early Morning hours visiting survivors of the crash. The University Said the students were on their way to attend the annual spring review an event that offers potential students a chance to see the campus. The schools president visited some survivors at a hospital in redding and said the victims were having a difficult time. To see young people get hurt, in this case, some were killed, thats a real tragedy. We wanted to come and do everything we can to help the young people that had survived the accident. The schools president said the survivors who suffered moderate injuries appear to be doing quite well. Flags are flying at half staff on the college campus. Victims who suff
