A hunch made a driver a hero. Reporter right above people whizzing by on a freeway. Today one stopped when it mattered. Reporter when police and fire crews got on the scene about 9 00 this morning, they had a roaring car fire but no one to rescue, that had already been done. I went down there and smelled smoke, i had to get him out of car by the time i hopeed the door i was choking. Reporter he yelled at driver but he was gone. The unconscious man had careened across the lot and through a fence but altero didnt know anything of that. The car wasnt even smoking when he spotted it from the freeway. He thought maybe abandoned, maybe not. I was a heartbeat away from going to work. I thought i have to go check it out. The drivers seat, the liner, the dash were all borned massively. Reporter alteros hunch made the difference. If the driver had been there for a length of time he would have been killed. I just could not get a grip of him. Reporter after slipping and sliding on the slope, altero managed to drag the man for a couple of feet then other bystanders helped drag him to the side of the road. Altero has two children. An Alaska Airline flight out of oakland had to return to the airport after it apparently hit a bird after it took off. Alaska flight 589 was headed to San Francisco, within minutes the pilot today passengers they had go back to oakland. It was carrying 152 people. There were lots of emergency vehicles just waiting in case they had trouble landing because they didnt have the instruments and werent willing to go to seattle because the instruments werent working. Im sure they had a different kind of landing but it seemed quite smooth. Reporter Alaska Airlines was arranging to put passengers on another flight before 11 00 tonight. It happened at the busy intersection of church and market just after 7 30, you can see the damage there caused to the back of this silver suv. The trollly rear ended the car and that set off a Chain Reaction involving two more cars. A Fire Department dispatcher told us five or six people were injured but none of those injuries are believed to be critical. A San Mateo County sheriff deputy and two Corrections Officers are facing charges tonight for allegedly smuggling cell phones and drugs into the county jail in redwood city and putting them into the hands of a gang member behind bars. Maintenance workers were checking a heater in an unused classroom and thats when the explosion happened. No students were hurt but the school was evacuated. They said at one point the contractor stopped answered his phone. Restarted to investigate and we found out the contractor is operating on a stolen license. Reporter its the fact that his familys house is covered with a tarp. He say it is contractor he hired to replace the roof started the job two months ago. Galaviz has not seen a single shingle yet. Instead debris is piled in his front yard. See that little crack right there. Thats where it started to drip. Reporter when it rained wednesday, water was leaking over his daughters bed. We have no roof and its raining and were expecting rain next week. And so you know its very frustrating and its kind of heartbreaking too that people you know have no heart. Reporter galaviz showed two investigates a contract that he signed with an Apolonio Morales. He paid the contractor 500 up front to cover the materials. When they tore off everything, then he come up and said we agree that if the roof need plywood, you give me the extra money. Reporter he said he paid the contractor four times for the total of 9,000. After he did the gutters he took off and left. I tried to get in contact with him two weeks ago and nothing. Reporter when was that . That happened in the beginning of october. Reporter the contract names morales with a state license number in the corner. But when 2 investigates called the licensing board, they told us that the number was tied to alex lopez. We contacted lopez and he told us that he had worked with him months ago. I have nothing to do with this person. I continue to not have nothing to do with him in the future. I just want to make sure is this homeowner gets taken care of. Reporter i called Apolonio Morales but his messages were full. So many people go with contractors, one of the things they did say is its very important not to give the contractor money. Theyre entitled to 10 of the money but dont give them more. A warning about men lurking around schools trying to lure away young girls. An undercover operation led to todays arrest of 36yearold gary fong of San Francisco. He is facing charges for approaching minors. Police say they believe a different suspect is involved in a similar incident. A 19yearold woman there told us that just last night a man approached her with a strange request. He just goes, come with me, come get my car and well talk about you making some money. And i was just like, im not interested in anything you have to say to me. The woman is helping police create a sketch of the man, hes described as filipino weighing about 165 pounds. He had spike spikey hair. Gilroy Police Responded after getting called about a strong gas odor. They tracked the smell to a home where they say thigh found this. An active hash oil lab. Police arrested 31yearold rene vargas for making the hash oil and for position of marijuana. A stiff sentence of up to seven years behind bars for an oakland teenager who set another teenager on fire. Its a case that received a lot of attention last year. The victim was sleeping on a bus coming home from school and sustained serious burn injuries. But as ktvu john sasaki told us no one including the victims parents is happy with the sentence. People poured out of an oakland courtroom after Richard Thomas was sentenced. The thing that just struck me when he walked in was my god, hes just a kid. Reporter the 17yearold thomas seen in this sketch with his attorney set sashas skirt on fire. Thomas was sentenced to 51 2 years. 51 2 years he will have to serve in jail. Reporter sashas mother spoke. Its horrible what you did. But we dont hate you. We think hate creates more hate. We want you to come out of prison not being hateful. Reporter tomas wanted to give a statement but wasnt feeling well. His cousin told us what he would have said. He just wants him to forgive him for what happened. It was a big misunderstanding. He apologizing. I know i could see it in his eyes that he was genuinely sorry for what hes done. Reporter the good thing is sasha is now in college. Sashas family wanted thomas to be tried in juvenile court. To treat that decision that choice that he made on that day as, the choice of a grown person doesnt seem fair. Reporter in fremont the judge will evaluate thomas educational and rehabilitation process and will do so again next summer. If everything goes good, his sentence will be reduced. Reporter 16yearold rodney fraizer was shot and killed in front of his home one week ago tonight. Thats what he loved, up top. Reporter now his coach wants to build on what he calls his wall of success. Photos and newspaper clippings about former students including gang members who have turned their lives around with guidance from coaches and teachers. We want this opportunity, now is it going to work . I dont know. What we had been doing wasnt working good enough. Rodney is dead. He says the plan involves the police helping them identify at risk youth they can target. Its not going to be easy. Some of these kids are addicted to drugs. Theyre addicted to the life, theyre addicted to the streets but that doesnt mean we shouldnt try. Reporter the day before rodney died he left his basketball shoes with his teacher for safekeeping. Something many inner city students do to safeguard their valuables. Now their coach is trying to safeguard their lives with basketball and mentoring. I know it helps me stay out of a lot of trouble because its so much stuff that you can get into into the neighborhood that im from. Some of the warrior players will be here at the game and some of the executive that is run the team will talk to you to make sure were still feeling good about what were doing. Reporter coach collins received a phone call from the Golden State Warriors this evening he says members of the warriors plan to attend a game and these players are invited to attend a warriors game.
