Bringing down an airport, bringing down an airplane has high value for terrorists. Cristina rendon tells us about this latest intrusion. Reporter San Jose Police tell ktvu, miguel saragosa was spoted in a restricted area. They brought him into the lobby of their building and called police. Zaragosa ran to the street and tried to get a Maintenance Worker to give him a ride to the terminal. The Maintenance Worker refused. Zaragosa reportedly stole the vehicle and ended up in the terminal where he was arrested. Its very scary. The one place you want to be safe. Reporter the public was never in any danger and operations were not affected. Our level of security workedded. Our part of the Security Program identified an unauthorized person on the ramp and took appropriate action in order to apprehend this individual. To be honest with you, its really not that big of a surprise because theres not that many people. Reporter zaragosa was arrested and is going to be facing several charging including stealing a vehicle. A woman walking on interstate 580 was struck by as many as three vehicles and killed. Investigators say its not clear why the unidentified woman was on that busy roadway. The three vehicles involved were towed from the scene. All westbound lanes of interstate 580 west of highway 238 were closed for more than three hours tonight after the investigation continued. In the north bay, investigators say alcohol played a role in a head on crash on highway 101 that killed two people. The chp says the drunk wrong way driver slammed into another vehicle in novato. Christien kafton is live at the scene. Im talking to investigator, he told us this wrong way driver hit this road just moments before the deadly accident turning here on highway 101. You can see the signs there warning anyone who take that is turn that theyre going if wrong way. That driver headed northbound in the southbound lanes traveling for miles before the collision. Roughly, almost four miles. He had driven four miles. Approximately, yes. That coincides with the number of calls we got before first call and time of collision which is four minutes apart which at 60 Miles Per Hour is exactly four miles. He made a last pit stop at this jack in the box moments before getting on the freeway. The food was still hot when investigators arrived at the scene of the accident. Investigators arent going into a lot of details but say there are indications the driver of the toyota camry was intoxicated at the time of the crash but say they are waiting for toxicology reports. Investigators say the 911 calls started coming in at two minutes after midnight about that wrong way driver. The call changed to report a collision. The 66yearold man driving this nissan was killed. His passenger survived and was hospitalized. In cases like these wrong way drivers tend to move to the most dangerous part of the road. Typically they move all the way to their right. In their mind their perception is its the slow lane but in fact, its the fast lane going the wrong way. Reporter Authorities Say the week heading into the holiday is their busiest. And the search is underway where the coast guard is looking for someone in the water. The search is taking place in Rock Away Beach in pacifica. They lost sight of the person and called the coast guard. The coast guard is now searching by helicopter. Investigators are looking into whether driver fatigue is to blame. The chp says the bus was traveling in los angeles to Washington State when it ran off the road and overturned. 30 were taken to the hospital, five of them seriously. The chp said earlier this morning this same bus crashed into a dennys. The window washer who fell from an 11 Story Building in San Francisco last week is still in life threatening condition. San Francisco Police say the man remains at San Francisco general hospital. The man fell friday morning from a building at the corner of montgomery and california in the Business Financial district. He landed on top of a toyota camry. The driver of that car was not hurt. The name of the victim has not yet been released. San jose fire crews rescued a boy who fell off a cliff. It happened at 10 00 in the morning at eagle rock peak. At first rescue crews could not spot him. They said he fell 30 to 40 feet but was conscious and not injured. He was air lifted by hospital to a trauma center. A visiting team brought a big crowd to levis stadium. Protesters filled the parking lot hours before kick off. It was the loudest noisy demonstrations to urge the owner of the Washington Redskins to change the teams name. The rally was peaceful but there was one moment when things got a little heated. Reporter American Indian groups performed a traditional tribal ceremony right outside of levis stadium. With the hopes that those going in to watch the redskins see what they see. A traditional ceremony, not a sports team mascot. There are plenty of native americans who are sports fans. We have to see them as native americans and totally tear our culture apart. A feather head piece is an honor to wear one, not everyone can wear one. Its our culture. If theres a specific group of people that feel upset or oppressed or disrespected by anything. Youre not going to oppress us anymore. Like that young man there. Reporter hes a fan of the team and doesnt care for the call. Im still a huge fan. Its not a fan im a fan. Its the team. I wouldnt have a problem with them changing the name. The owner of the Washington Team Dan Schneider has vowed to keep the name saying the term red skin honors native americans. The team has also sited polls that say people dont find the name offensive. He was acquitted on 21 charges. Its unclear at this point how many charges the next trial will involve. Martin a married father of two remains in the county jail on 10 million bail. A 12yearold boy was shot and killed by police in cleveland the this weekend after carrying what turns out to be a replica gun. The coroner identified the boy as wright. The boy was in a playground waving a gun and pointing it at people. One 911 caller said the suspect was probably a juvenile and that the gun was quote probably a fake. Police say when they arrived they spotted rice and ordered him to raise his hands. They say he reach into his waistband and thats when the officers opened fire. This case has a resemblance to the case of andy lopez. Lopez was killed by a sheriff deputy while he was wearing an air soft gun. In both of the cases the orange tip had been removed from the toy gun. The grand jury deciding whether or not to charge Darren Wilson who shot and killed a black unarmed man Michael Brown is set to reconvene tomorrow. Police have put barricades around a makeshift command center in ferguson where brown was killed. Today president obama called for calm. This is a country that allows everyone to express their views, but using any event as an excuse for violence is contrary to rule of law and contrary to who we are. Prosecutors say they dont expect it will take long for a decision. News director told me to go home and get some rest. You cant rest. I went home, showered, layed there and i said, what am i doing here. I got back up and back to work. He spent four decades anchoring and reporting on the biggest stories of the bay area. Coming up, my interview with Dennis Richmond six years after his retirement. And should never be an item on a bucket list. It was tonight for one south bay teen. Technically hes not supposed to be here right now. More proof of how a positive outlook is driving him to the next items on his list. Turning 18 is a milestone for anyone but especially so for a south bay teen. We recently told you about alex matlos cox. He is dying of brain cancer. But he has a bucket list still propelling him into the next week. It was an evening full of laughs. Reporter doctors didnt think he would see 18. But alex matlos cox got birthday wishes from dozens of people his mom calls alexs army. I really love to be able to thank everyone. Technically i shouldnt be here today. Reporter alex has beat cancer once. People who have known alex all his life joined with strangers to accomplish his bucket list. Sailing the bay, fencing, flying a plane. Rides in exotic cars. A dozen activities so far. Sometimes the bay area can be a little immerseful. Its a go getter type of environment. Its amazing how the Community Came together to make these things happen for him. Reporter this week a dream come true. A visit from george r. R. Martin creator of game of thrones. Alexs favorite show. Someone who is busy like him took the time out to meet a fan like me. I asked him a lot of questions. About how he started and a lot of other things. Reporter and tonight a chance to shelf illness for a few hours and just laugh. A dozen comics giving their time. I asked them if they wanted to do the show and they were more than happy to do it. I am still here. And i dont plan on leaving any time soon. Reporter reaching 18 was a goal. Christmas the next one. Then the new year, and his anniversary with his girlfriend. It starts out with every single day. Reporter inspiration, from game of thrones. What do we say to death . And arias says not today. Reporter alex spent time after the comedy show thanking people. Even when losing weight and getting weaker, he focusing on his bucket list. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. One pastor thought it may have been an electrical problem. Rain began to fall and temperatures rose. The buffalo area is under a flood warning. About 7 feet of snow fell on the area last week. Governor andrew cuomo told residents if they live in an area that floods they better prepare to evacuate. Were prepared for the worse. We have boats, we have pumps, we have 181,000 bags. We have everything you can imagine. The buffalo area received about a years worth of snowfall over three days last week. 86inches fell in some places. Officials say the weather contributed to at least 13 peoples deaths. A strong earthquake in western china has killed at least four people and damaged thousands of homes. Us geologists said it was 5. 9. But seismologists say it was stronger at 6. 6. Many children were caught in a stampede to get out of the building. One person is also missing. An earthquake also hit western japan. U. S. Geologists are calling it a 6. 2. Three dozen homes were damaged. Officials say there was no damage at three near by Nuclear Power plant which is have been idle since that devastating 2011 quake and tsunami. Gas prices are continuing to fall just over the last few weeks. The price at the pump has dropped. The downward trend began in maine and brought gas prices down a total of 88cents a gallon so far. According to aaa the Daily Fuel Gauge report says the National Average is now 2. 2. 82 a gallon for regular. In oakland the price is a little higher at 3. 11. San francisco has the highest prices in the nation at 3. 27 gallon. He was the consummate professional, unflappable in almost any situation. But not this time. The San Francisco Human Services agency and Episcopal Community teamed up to provide additional shelters to men and women. In the past the shelter provided housing for the men and this year for women as well. Were going to get bedding, and in the morning were getting breakfast before we leave. Reporter the Winter Shelter Program will operate through january 21st. A man is behind bars after invest investigators say they slammed into a car. Officers tried to pull the suspect over but they say he refused. Investigators say the pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle went up an enbankment. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. A look back with a bay area legend. And it was very emotional. Because you know, just about the time we went on they found the little girls body. And its still emotional. The story that brought him to tearing. After the break. We sit down with former ktvus anchor Dennis Richmond and we talk about his career that spanned almost four decades and we talk about the stories that impacted him the most. [ female announcer ] get your taste of the season, at raleys, bel air, and nob hill. Good evening im Dennis Richmond. Dennis richmond is nothing less than a bay area institution. He is still stopped in the street whenever he visits the bay area by the many viewers who grew up watching him. He was the face of ktvu for decades. Dennis richmond rarely needs an introduction, but many wonder what hes been up to. Good evening im elaine corral. And im Dennis Richmond. Reporter Dennis Richmond spent 20 years at ktvu. But he didnt set out to be a news man. I was working at channel 2 as an ad. Associate director. Associate director, behind the camera. Reporter he worked his way as a reporter job at a time when bay area was exploding with social unrest and when most reporters and their bosses were white men. That didnt dawn on me that much. It didnt matter that it was dominated by you know by white men. By 1976. He was the main anchor at ktvu. Reporter he says being in the studio didnt shield him from the drama that sometimes unfolded outside like the fire storm. We were in the newsroom day and night. And the news director told me to go home and get some rest. You cant rest in situations like that. I went home, showered, layed there and i said what the hell am i doing here. Got back up and went to work. This imposing 62 stoic man, inside he would bleed. There were young women and they were screaming. Their father had one little girl by the hand. And the mud just ripped the little girl from his hand. We had to go on the air. Somebody was going to do a remote from the scene. And we lost power and we had to do it from the studio. I had to do it. And it was very emotional. Just about the time we went on they found the little girls body. And its still emotional. And people think this is a callus. Reporter there were fun stories too he flew with the Thunder Birds and bleu angels. He went for a 40degree turn and i was gasping. It was killing me. Then he straightened up and he said, sorry about that. Are you all right. And i said yup. Im fine. After i told myself, if i knew how to fly this plane i would probably strangle him right now. Reporter one thing some viewers didnt know is dennis suffers from the hick ups, he even takes medications for it. You were always worried about getting the hick ups on the air. Did that ever happen. Once. Once. It was one little hick. It wasnt even a hick up. Just one hick. It was scary. The only person who noticed it was my daughter. She noticed it
