Open, debora. Reporter frank, you will still be able to walk across the bridge. And the Golden Gate Bridge district buses will still be running. But there wont be any regular traffic. Which is bound to have a spill over effect. Reporter plastic tubes and a lot of luck are all that separates cars coming opposite directions on the Golden Gate Bridge. Of the 36 People Killed in crashes since the 70s, about half were in head on wrecks. So now the landmark is getting a rare structural change. Its a great idea, you cant argue against it. Inconvenience for two or three days its not a big deal. If it saves lives its a good thing. Reporter the barrier can be lifted, concrete and steel sections shifted to allow lanes to adapt to traffic flow. Hundreds of sections are ready for installation. The zipper truck one on each side of the bridge are visible now. With the Richmond Bridge which is problematic or take golden gate transit. Or ride my bike. Reporter the Richmond San Rafael bridge carries about 68,000 vehicles both directions on both saturday and sunday. The golden gate about 80,000 so the more northernly bridge could become twice as crowded. Now to the right side at the bottom. Reporter tourists are most likely to be blind sided by this shut down. Guides are reassuring them they can still walk across and by diverting buses into the presidio still get their scenic shots. For those comeing in we let them know the bridge is closing but we will be able to fix the way they get some pictures. Reporter the movable barrier on doyle drive already seems to work without a hitch. They understand that they have to put these barriers up on the bridge. Thats something thats relevantly necessary. And really needed. Reporter were lucky, im happy that we got to see it like right now. Other wise, i mean, a huge disappointment. Its iconic, everywhere in the world identifies the Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco. So its like its a great, i mean its a must see. Reporter a few changes for marin drivers with the barrier, the speed limit is extending on to the bridge will be 45 not 55 and the lanes will merge from right to left which is the opposite of how it is now. So there are definite adjustments to be made frank. And this bridge which is already narrow will become 6 inches narrower. So be careful. You dont want to be the first person to sideswipe that new barrier. Boy you sure dont. Debora how does the bay bridge measure in all of this. Reporter the bay bridge is going to feel it. Its the only way if in and out of city to head north. It already handles 6,000 vehicles on the weekend. What if i have a 415 area code and im dialing a 415. You will still need to dial one, plus the area code, plus the number. As long as theres no charges, i think its fine. Reporter but hes concerned the change will not come without problems. For the older folks like my father theres going to be a lot of confusion for the older ones.
