New at 10 00 tonight, ktvus amber lee live in richmond after speaking with the artist about how it happened and how you can help. Reporter heather, the artest has reported the theft here to richmond police. So far, none of the stolen artwork has turned up these are just empty wooden pedestals. Reporter alexis silk says 20 pieces of glass work she created are gone. Silk is holding the only glass sculpture she still has after years worth of labor was stolen from her. There was a lot of time, and sweat, and energy in all of the artwork. Reporter by thursday morning, the trailer was gone. The stolen artwork included these life sized pieces. My soul and my heart to my livelihood. Reporter the trailer was parked across the street from a friend as house, when it was hauled away by thieves. Silk says her tools were also stolen, she had planned to transport everything to this weekend sausalito art show, where she hoped to sell some pieces. It was pretty shocking, and a very traumatic, both emotional and financial hit. Reporter she doesnt think the thieves targeted her. Police recovered the empty trailer thursday, a few hours after it was reported stolen. This is just all bubble wrap again. Reporter it was found behind a business on mcdoneal avenue, just a few blocks from where it was stolen. Tomorrow, she returns to the studio to start to create new pieces, but says they cannot replace the ones that were stolen. Incredibly sad, because these pieces have so much value to me. But i know that they will have absolutely no value to the people that stole them. Reporter soul estimates her total loss to be about 150,000. She is offering a 1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of her artwork. So disappointing, amber, when you talk about her artwork and her tools. You and i were talking, and you said it takes a really long time for her to create each one of these pieces. Reporter they said its very labor intensive. In fact, how long it takes depends on each piece and sometimes it takes up to six assistants to create a piece. Each one very unique and special. The Highway Patrol says a tire blowout caused a Chain Reaction crash on interstate 880 in oakland this evening, that ended up sending seven people to the hospital. Three vehicles were involved. The crash happened just before 6 30 near the jackson street onramp to northbound 880, not far from the 980 interchange. Authorities say one car traveling on 880 had a blowout. It then swerved and hit a van, and both of those vehicles then went over the side of the freeway, pauling about four feet down. In all, 11 people were traveling in those three vehicles. Seven were injured, and taken to hospitals. One person suffered moderate injuries. The rest were taken to the hospital as a precaution. And a developing story right now. Another accident on 23rd street in oakland thats causing a major backup tonight for southbound traffic on 880. Three of four lanes were closed after the crash on the 23rd street overpass sent debris falling and left the guardrail hanging above the freeway. Emergency repair work is now underway. But you can see the backup there. Heres how it looks on our traffic map. You can see that red line through oakland, the backup goes for about three miles. The estimated time for the reopening of the lanes is now about midnight. B. A. R. T. Says it is on track to resume service between San Francisco and the east bay. First thing tomorrow morning. Reporter so far so good is what im hearing. The buses have been coming through regularly. We just saw one pass by. These buses are going to be running until midnight tonight. Many of the passengers are telling me that its been a lot easier and faster than they expected. Reporter for b. A. R. T. Workers. The Labor Day Weekend has been hard work. In trying to keep the estimated 160,000 b. A. R. T. Workers on the right track isnt always easy. They guided us. Reporter david romany says he was listening to music when he boarded b. A. R. T. It kept going straight toward richmond. Reporter he didnt realize he needed to get off the b. A. R. T. Train in oakland and take a bus. One of more than 70 buses that b. A. R. T. Has called into Service Provides a free ride across the bridge. My band mate doesnt have a cell phone, so hes sitting there wondering where i am. Reporter workers could perform critical maintenance work, including grinding the rail smooth. That friction is what creates the noise that everybody hears. Especially when you go through the transbay tube. Were hoping that the trip through the tube will be quieter and smoother. Theyll be pretty thoroughly inspected and tested before the track crews leave for the night. Reporter passengers said they didnt run into any anticipated holiday delays. They were given dedicated lanes to the bay bridge toll plaza. By 6 00 p. M. Saturday, traffic was still light. They did good. They really did good. Yeah, there was no lines when i left this morning. A man was struck and killed by a truck in alameda today. He was hit as he was walking in the crosswalk. The accident happened about noon at the intersection of Marina Village parkway and constitution way. Police said the truck had just come out of the webster tube when it hit a 65yearold man who was trying to cross the street. The victim was on his way back home from the grocery store. Police said the driver stopped immediately, and is cooperating with the investigation. New at 10 00, a search underway for a man who disappeared from angel island. His name is howder van lyra. He is described as 6 feet tall, 190 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Marin search and rescue, tiburon police, and the u. S. Coast guard have all been actively searching for him. Temperatures around the bay area are expected to reach the triple digits in some inland areas this weekend. Anderson reservoir and morgan hill is likely to be one of those spots. Park rangers monitored that area, and say theyll be on the lookout for people suffering from dehydration, and other heat related illnesses. At noon, it turns like 100 degrees, and theyre out there, and still not back. Hot spots dont have phone reception, they might not be able to call for help. Anyone out for a hike in the coming days is advised to carry a lot of water for yourself. Those soaring temperatures have prompted air quality officials to issue a spare the air alert for tomorrow. They say the hot weather coupled with vehicle exhaust will create unhealthy ozone levels and smoggy conditions. People are asked to use public transit, rideshare, or perhaps bike to work. There are countries that would like to build walls and not take in a single refugee. The president returned to the white house this evening after his labor day announcement in boston. On the way there he signed an executive order, granting up to seven days a year of sick leave to federal contractors. That will affect some 300,000 americans. The speech turned political as well, when the president hammered at republicans for failing to help the middle class. This is the party that says it wants to rebrand themselves. Theyre doing everything they can to bust unions. And then they want to claim to be the party of the American Worker. Here in the bay area, tom vacar spent this labor day talking to people about the current state of the u. S. Labor market and the overall economy. A constant battle to keep what theyve fought for. Weve seen an uptick in members coming in, and members organizing which, when Union Members get increases, that tide floats all boats. For nonunion workers, many jobs available, but for often disappointing pay. We also see a new resurgence in people just getting tired of being paid low wages and lack of benefits. So were, our organizing is picking up to a level that i havent seen for 40 years. Reporter employment lawyer, Michael Burnick says its still better than labor day four years ago, when more than 1 million jobs had been lost. Our Unemployment Rate is down to 6. 2 . Weve gained over 1. 8 million jobs this past month we gained 80,000 jobs. So its a very different labor day. Reporter but many of the new jobs are for part timers, freelancers, and independent contractors without benefits. Its getting much, much, much tougher to get that traditional full time job with benefits. In a word, labor day 2015 is uncertain. For workers, theyre not popping the champagne. Maybe a light beer for labor day. You look a little below the average, theyre very uneven, and very uncertain. Reporter low wages have a whip saw affect. Uc berkeley says state and federal assistance to the low wage working poor cost the nation 153 billion. 31billion in california alone. I think people are ready 30 push back. They just want a piece of the pie that makes life decent for them and their family. I dont think thats too much to ask for. Reporter if those policy changes are not forthcoming, some folks think that more and more workers will do what the longshoremen did.
