Us tonight. Debora villalon is in the north bay where in just a little while a freeze warning will take effect. But we begin with mark tamayo whos tracking these low temperatures from our weather center, mark. Clear and cold conditions for tonight. Parts of the area beginning to cool off rapidly. We have a frost advise advisory in place. Temperatures there mainly in the 30s. We will bring it up a level though. We have an area shaded in purple as you see closer in san jose. Including livermore, concord up to the parts of the north bay as well. Temperatures 25 to 32 degrees. This begins 11 00 tonight right on through tomorrow morning. Not only for friday morning but also into saturday morning as well. Clear skies looking out toward San Francisco and the bay bridge. You can see the trajectory of the winds moving in from the north. Thats a cold pattern. Take a look at some of the current numbers out there right now. It is 36 degrees in walnut creek. But also look at the north bay. We have a one little change with the temperature here of at least one exception. Thats up toward santa rosa. Right now its 50 degrees and the reason why the winds. The winds really kicking up up toward the sonoma airport. Gusting to 32 miles per hour. As a result the temperatures being held up up around santa rosa and the north bay as well. Were expecting very cold conditions overnight. Areas of frost with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Coming up well take a closer look at your lows. Thanks a lot, mark. The freezing or near freezing temperatures are forcing many people inside. In some parts of the bay area emergency cold weather shelters are opening up for the homeless. Ktvus Debora Villalon is in Sonoma County where a cold blue alert has just been activated. Debora. Reporter its the first alert of the season and its sooner than usual. And what that means is people are sitting in the administrative offices, on the floor, and next to the heater every Available Space to stay warm. Catholic charities brought out the heaters, the heat and the glow a comfort for those gathered around. Two out of three of Sonoma Countys homeless live outdoors but nights like these send it in. I loved it here. I mean last night i slept, i didnt want to get up this morning. I mean, i slept like a baby last night. I mean, i was warm. Reporter this couple became stranded in santa rosa a year ago on rout to oregon. Im a welder by trade. Reporter this is their second night signed up for the shelter. Its just hard to find work and an affordable place. I havent been back to california for 17 years. When i come back its skyrocketed, everything is skyrocketed. Reporter a code blue emergency adds 500 cots and mats into existing places. Up to 1,000 year round places. Hot drinks take the edge off but many people suffer poor health, chronic conditions, untreated and they become even more dangerous overnight. After thanksgiving dinner he says were going to one of the warmer stations i said okay lets go. Reporter this mother and son once homeless were helped by this same agency. Now mom works in the city as an elevator mechanic. They showed up after dinner to help without being called. They supported me and they helped me through it. Were successful now. My son, myself. You give some you take some. Theres people who have less. And theres many people here gives on this thanksgiving. Theres a lot of people that may not make it through this winter. We lost a lot of good people because of the cold. Reporter usually this office space is where people get their mail, apply for shelter, and take showers. But tonight theres people. The snow is piling up in the Sierra Nevada nearly 5 feet for the month of november. Some of that is thanks to the recent storm that brought us rain here in the bay area. Squaw valley, Alpine Meadows sent us these pictures of skiers. The resort got 17inches and that will allow it to open up even more runs this weekend. Now to developing news out of concord where right now contra costa firefighters are on the scene of a Furniture Store fire. Flames were first reported around 7 00 this evening. The fire quickly grew to two alarms. Near willow pass road and interstate 680. And it gave firefighters a real battle. We might also call in additional manpower later on because of the amount of work that needs to be done. We might have worn out the crews. We might have another alarm just to relieve the first two alarm crews. Sam clark was founded in downtown oakland back in 1939. No one was hurt. The cause of this fire still under investigation tonight. It may not officially be black friday yet but some stores are already open offering holiday deals, deals that had shoppers spending thanksgiving in line. Reporter this family says shopping together is becoming a thanksgiving tradition. As is sitting down for a meal. We had a beautiful thanksgiving, thought we would come out. The holiday spirit is on display at the line outside the toys r us and customers waited for the store to open. Kind of cold. Its freezing. Reporter but these two women say the chill in the air bearable because their shopping for a nonprofit that gives the toys to children whos families cannot afford holiday gifts. It makes my heart feel good. Yeah. Yes, it keeps me warm. We will be letting people in at a controlled pace. Reporter off to the race of the Holiday Shopping season. Whenever i see, just grab and run. Im here for the tablet. Reporter sales signs galore. Shelves poor, but not for long. Customers say shopping on this day is worth it. We saved over 100 by doing it this way. Reporter some say they no longer shop on black friday. It gets crazy tomorrow and its just too busy. Its too busy. And theres less people tonight. Reporter at best buy, the general manager says black friday is still busier than thanksgiving day. Tradition, people like to shop on that day. Its the kick of the season. Kick off the holiday season. And let me tell you, look at this pile right here. All these tvs have been sold. And weve seen people at endless line of people outside loading up their cars with those big screen tvs. Back to you, rob. Amber, here we go. The Christmas Shopping season is well underway. The holiday was made a little brighter for the less fortunate. Some of them enjoyed a warm thanksgiving dinner at st. Anthonys. Organizers served about 3,000 meals with the help from volunteers and donations. About 80 were the regulars and the rest just came in for the holiday. And some brought their family because they could not afford dinner themselves. Volunteers at glide served an estimated 5,000 people. Dinner included turkey, ham and all the trimmings. San francisco major ed mayor ed lee was one of 100 volunteers that helped put the dinner together. The band of morigian indians donated another 30 turkeys. The San Francisco police department, Sheriff Department and Fire Department all took part today in a thanksgiving tradition. They prepared and delivered hundreds of meals for seniors all around the city. Ktvus fox 2s tara moyarti takes us through the process of cooking the turkeys to carving them up and delivering them. Reporter then hundreds of firefighters, Police Officers and paramedics carve and slice. You really start thanksgiving on friday if youve done something for someone else. Reporter volunteers tripped the meet off of 350 turkeys. 1 3 of them for home bound seniors. Were so blessed to be cops in the best city in the world then being able to help folks who cant even get out. Then we all smell like turkey for three days. Reporter once the turkeys are cut, and boxes are stuffed. Theyre loaded on to patrol cars then comes the delivery. You got it grace. Reporter even the officers children help out. Reporter captain lozano and children ring doorbells and climb up dozens of stairs. Have a thanksgiving. Thank you, thank you. Reporter the recipients faces light up. Sometimes if no one answers they leave the meal at the door. But oftentimes they get to see the recipients smiles. Im 85 year old, my wife is bed bound. Thank you so much. You helped us. We received no comprehensive apology from turkey at a high diplomatic level. No offer of compensation for the harm and damage and no promise to hold those responsible of this crime. Reporter russia is turkeys largest trading partner. Already hundreds of turkish travelers are stuck at the airport. Cameron says it will be a long battle but it will make russia safer. And aaron dolan posted photos on instagram showing a holiday meal in chicago with 17 syrian refugee families. Chicago is one of a growing number of cities accepting syrian refugees. Dolan wrote on instagram that doolittle wanted to welcome them with one of americas biggest traditions. And she also wrote that chicago is lucky to have the families. Skiers and snow boarders definitely have something to be thankful for. A storm earlier this week brought almost a foot of snow to the mountains but the skies cleared just in time for the long holiday weekend. Reporter fresh snow relatively short lift lines and clearing skies are why skiers and snow boarders were giving thanks today at sugar bowl ski resort. We got here, a little windy up top. But its a good day. A good first day, sure. Reporter after opening for a couple of days last week, sugar bowl opened today for the season. With about 1 3 of the lifts up. Thanksgiving in tahoe is not always a given and boy did we get it this year. Reporter not a lot of people from out of state just yet. Many are families with young kids, now off from school all thanksgiving week. When i grew up it was just a wednesday, thursday, friday vacation. So we got to entertain the kids and Nothing Better than getting them out for some fresh air. This is how you will spend your thanksgiving or will you get off the hill and go eat. We will get off the hill and go back to auburn and have a big turkey dinner. Reporter whos doing the cooking . My motherinlaw. Reporter temperatures never got above freezing, but few people complained especially not the ones bundled up. How long did it take you to get all those clothes on . A while. Reporter the colder temperatures also mean that sugar bowl and other tahoe area resorts can keep their snow guns going 24 hours a day. Sugar bowl says only Mother Nature can cover some of its rockiest steepest slopes. You need good tahoe 3foot dumps to get a lot of that terrain open but were well on our way. And theres still a lot of winter left to come. A great start to the ski season. In fact, across the entire west coast we have cold air in place for truckee. The overnight low will be eight to 10 degrees. Single digits there. You can see the reason why. You can see the upper level pattern. You have the air moving from the north. The winds have been picking up. With that it might help keep up temperatures overnight especially up in the north bay. Right now take a look at the current temps. Its very localized. Look at sfo a north wind at 20 miles per hour. Especially up in the north bay. Were having a big impact on the santa rosa temperatures sustained at 23. Gusting to 32. Also out toward fairfield the wind gusts to 25 miles per hour. And as a result temperatures if the wind were lighter would be a lot colder than what they are right now. You can see right now in santa rosa, 50 degrees. Napa mid40s. Walnut creek 35 and San Francisco in the upper 40s at 49. Were in the clear right now across the entire bay area. And heres a look at the forecasted lows. For santa rosa were going to go 23 degrees but the wind does not back off. The temperature might be warmer but still where the wind are not a factor upper 20s to lower 30s out there. Oakland 36, livermore 30 degrees. So wake up very cold numbers frost out there and freeze warnings posted. Especially up in the north bay, the east bay and the Santa Clara Valley as well for the inland valleys, San Francisco forecast low of 40 degrees. And the fda is recalling several items. Taylor farms made the salad mix. That salad is being recalled including other items using cale farm celery. The outbreak has sickened 19 people in seven states. Five people have been hospitalized including two with kidney failure. Most people spent thanksgiving morning making dinner for family and friends. Reporter pippins has enough to feed 800 people. Thanksgiving morning she and her friends get up before dawn to prepare hundreds of meals. This is a lot of work. Why do you do this . Because i want everybody to share thanksgiving with me. Reporter eight years ago something inspired her and her husband to help people. We saw People Living in the street. They were homeless. Reporter her husband is now gone but his memory lives on. The current climate is theres thousands of people who are homeless, people who dont have enough to eat. Reporter once the meals are ready theyre packed up and carried out. Richardson pippens daughters and friends make the deliveries. The response they get is their reward. Thank you so much. Thank you. No problem, happy thanksgiving. Reporter while many of these meals will go to the homeless, they also bring it to friends that need a hand. Thanksgiving dinners can be expensive.
