Reporter we have the car, the plate and the picture of the suspects. Nearly seven weeks later, no arrests. So we asked, what was taking so long . There is a process to doing the identification to make sure we get the right people. Reporter we press them as to whether police had gotten warrants. I dont want to get into specifics. We do have leads. Reporter ktvu has been trying to find out why the car burglary problem has reached epidemic proportions. There are cracks throughout the system. Still not getting any time, straight to probation and then reoffending. The reality is that we have crime increased tremendously last year and there has not been a Significant Police action on it. Reporter the number of car burglaries in San Francisco quadrupled over the last four years. Nearly 26,000 last year alone. The ta took action on 80 of the cases they were given but that number is still only 1. 5 of all car burglaries that occur. But theres another problem. Before cases get to a courtroom, sometimes police can only prove a suspect has stolen property which is just a misdemeanor if the value is less than 950. Position doesnt necessarily mean they committed the burglary. Reporter many of these thieves are getting off the with like sentences and doing it again and again. If we can put them in jail and have them there for a while, it sends a clear message to the rest of them that were not horsing around. Reporter in the case of our burglary, the briefcase and contents are worth thousands which means these guys are on the hook for two felonies if they get caught and prosecuted. We are following the investigation. Like thousands of victims across San Francisco, we want to know, what does it take to get justice . They are getting away with it.
