What the fbi director james comey said and also what he didnt say. Reporter lets start with the facts. He learned of the emails yesterday. The new emails came from an unrelated case. They dont know if they are significant or contain classified information. Fbi director james comey put the investigation into the investigation back into the pot light friday. They said that in connection with an unrelated case, the fbi has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation. The emails came to light after sexual text messaging from Anthony Wiener the estrange husband of clintons top aide. Trump jumped on the issue speaking in new hampshire, maine, and iowa. The fbi would have never reopened this case at this time unless they were a most egregious criminal offense. But the letter said that they cannot assess whether or not that it may be significant, campaigning in iowa as they countered. They deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately as we are calling on the fbi to release all their information that they have. He sent an internal memo internal memo saying that they would be misleading the American People not to supplement the record. At the same time however given that we dont know the significance of the newly discovered collection of e mails i dont want to create a misleading impression. But the big question that everyone left tonight is where does this lead . Trumps running mate mike pence would make the same call as clinton and the fbi should clear the air and release these new emails. So there is a little bit of, you know, the kind of criticism. Yes, certainly is, joining us to continue the conversation tonight as the professor of politics at the university of San Francisco. James, many people, they have already voted as we all know that many more are getting ready to vote. Does it change things in a significant way . It changes things for some people, but not in a significant way. I dont think that enough information is out. It is a smoking gun aside from this laptop itself being a smoking gun that we could actually identify now before the next 11 to 12 days that it might have a more direct impact. But as it is, they just feed the ongoing narrative that Hillary Clinton is underhanded that she is not sincere or honest that she is a typical politician. But it will give donald trump some momentum to take the focus off of kelly and their recent conversations, deleting information will be a part of it. This has helped donald trump, but its not enough to ship wreck Hillary Clintons campaign. It seems like james comey on one hand if he doesnt release the information and people found out about it after the election they will say why didnt you do that . On the other hand you have people saying theres only 11 days left and youre releasing this information. It feels like there is no other action other than to release all of the information. Hes played it halfway, but you cant do this halfway. That is the real problem. Immediately one of the things we need to learn from this is a question of october surprises. Donald trump has had his. He managed it. Whether he mismanaged it or not we can talk about that later. But Hillary Clinton is facing her october surprise. It was bound to come. This is so important in terms of the arc of the president ial campaigns in general historically. How did nixon handle the debate . How did they handle the last weeks of the 1988 campaign . And how did john mccain respond when the 2008 economy of september fell on his head and he said that the fundamental of the economy are faced . How did barack obama deal with the inflammatory campaign . Put all of that together and it is more important how you respond to your crisis and the crisis itself, for the fact that Hillary Clinton got out in front of this, managed it, and actually called the director back to the microphone to say get back here and tell us what you actually mean, Hillary Clinton actually is managing this perfectly. This is actually a blessing for Hillary Clinton in disguise. And james one of the things that were hearing, this are all these leaks from the fbi. Exactly, some people are saying that there are 1,000 e mails, some are saying 10,000, some are saying they dont know. So in terms of the october surprise does that weaken it at all . That there is so much that is unknown . Yes, and because of the elections are unknown that it is also because donald trump would have his. That this is a conventional campaign with the conventional candidate and a closer race, that this would hurt Hillary Clinton. But because of all of those factors that are not in place that shes fine and up by many points, you know, significantly and nationally from the popular vote as well as the electoral vote. You dont think that it will hurt her . Just minimally with those people that dont already like her. I dont think that she lost a single vote. Lawyers talk about the fruit of the poison tree that comes in this case. It is the source of the information thats corrupt then the evidence is corrupt. If the source is Wikileaks International or putin or donald trump or rudy giuliani. Think of what Hillary Clinton and im not a fan of Hillary Clinton, but think about what Hillary Clinton has had to endure. The russian government, the wealth of donald trump, the insurgency of Bernie Sanders, and now the constant drip of her emails. Let us see 35,000 of donald trump emails. What will we find in 35,000 of Bernie Sanders emails . Why is only Hillary Clinton asked to show her emails . Im no fan of Hillary Clinton. Because she was secretary of state. And yes, its a double standard where she is being asked to bring in her emails. Donald trump isnt even bringing in his taxes. Tomorrow it will be interesting to see if the focus is on comey and if he will step forward and actually take some of the heat. Yes, hes going to have to. James, thank you. Thank you so much.
