KTVU The Ten OClock News On KTVU Fox 2 July 19, 2017

This far. 20 years ago there was one that made it all the way to bear valley and they stopped it there but these winds are totally different this year and theres a lot of fuel. This fire started sunday afternoon. There are now 700 firefighters on the front lines, including a strike team from San Francisco. So far the flames have destroyed one structure and damaged a second. The good news though, no reports of any injuries. Earlier tonight we spoke to jesse figueroa, the owner of a market in the Small Community of greeley hill. Hes also an Emergency Responder and he told us about the evacuations. Im Operations Manager for Mercy Medical transportation which is the ambulance provider in mariposa and everyone, the employees, theyre being evacuated and we had four ambulances staffed today which we normally only have three, just trying to get people moved out, helping the hospital. Everyone is trying to help out to get everyone out of here. Smoke from the fire can be clearly seen in the Yosemite National park about 50 miles away. These pictures from yosemite were taken late this afternoon. Winds are also pushing the smoke all the way to the lake tahoe area which is about 180 miles to the north. Chief meteorologist bill martin is monitoring the weather conditions. We know its hot up there and weve been talking about wind throughout the day. Whats the wind looking like tonight . The winds have been blowing pretty consistently up there, 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour and temperatures in the low 90s with humidities in the teens. Take a look, we had cooling around here, significant cooling the last couple of days. Look in the inland valleys. The fire zone is up in this area and you can see theyre still in the 90s. Theyre still in some areas near 100 degrees. So the heat has continued for the last two days in the mariposa area. What are we looking at in terms of topography . This thing is right in the foothills, leading up in to the conifers, in to the pines. So heres mariposa. This is 140. This road is closed. The fire is right in this area. And if you look at the terrain, what i was talking about earlier in the earlier newscasts, youve got oaks, the wild oak which is the tall dry grass and youve also got pine trees. The firefighters talked about it, its one of the more terraindriven fires youll get. Lots of vertical, lots of fuel, and on top of that, day upon day of above 90degree and even 100degree temperatures in this area. So definitely 20,000 acres burned. Its a tough area to fight fires. And the heat is going to come back up as we head toward the end of this week. So firefighters need to get a handle on it soon because by the weekend were back in to significant heat, possibly triple digits. New the north bay where tonight search crews are outlooking for a 70yearold man who may have fallen off his boat. The man works for the Bay Oyster Company in the town of marshall. He was out missing when he was reported missing. His unmanned motor boat was spotted in the bay going around in circles. A man saw it who works in a neighboring oyster company. Search and rescue boats from the Marin County Fire Department and the Sheriffs Department have been searching the area since late this afternoon. Authorities also say they dont believe the man was wearing a lifejacket. He was reported to be wearing some type of weighters, which could hinder our search because he could be submerged. Crews say there are 30mileperhour winds on the bay, making the water choppy and the search that much more difficult. Sheriffs deputies in Santa Clara County have arrested two men in connection with a very daring burglary at a Verizon Store in cupertino. This wasnt your typical breakin. The burglars went through extreme lengths, entering through the roof and cutting through a metal door to steal over 100,000 in merchandise. Azenith smith is live in cupertino for us tonight. Youve learned how the heist was foiled. The thieves disabled alarms and security cameras here at this Verizon Store. But what they didnt disable, a tracking device on one of the stolen items. Reporter what two burglars did, sheriffs deputies call bold and brazen. They entered through the roof, cutting a hole at this Verizon Store on Stevens Creek boulevard in cupertino. We should check to see if tom cruise is between movies. Maybe he needed a new phone. Thats very unusual, pretty creative. It happened monday right 5 45 in the morning. In the back of the building you can see how they may have gotten on top of the roof. This ladder has a brand new lock. Not in my time in the Sheriffs Office, i havent heard anything like this. Definitely requires some sort of preplanning, probably prior knowledge of the actual building. The Sheriffs Office says the burglars, armed with power tools, used a saw to cut through a metal storage door. Then they swiped 189 items, iphones, ipads, Samsung Galaxy phones worth 138,000. Its a surprise. Its like it came from, like, a movie. Something that doesnt happen here in cupertino. Reporter the Sheriffs Office says they did exit through a door, using trash cans to take the items to their car. Deputies caught up with them 10 miles away underneath the southwest expressway on meridian avenue in san jose. Inside their silver lexus in the back seat and in the trunk. The stolen goods. Sources say one of the items had a tracking device which led to their capture. Thats what i think is kind of foolish for a burglar to be going after iphones. Youve got too much security right now. Reporter deputies arrested 40yearold tran nguyen of san jose. This is his booking photo. Nguyen is held on a 125,000 bail. Also arrested, 38yearold mark tran of american canyon. Tran bailed out so deputies did not provide a photo. Its kind of a cat and mouse game. These suspects and crooks think of ways to beat the system and the system tries to catch up with new security protocols. I went inside earlier and verizon has now hired a Security Guard to man the store inside. Im also told deputies are working with other bay area Law Enforcement to see if these men are connected to other burglaries. Azenith smith live for us in cupertino tonight. Thank you. Now to washington where President Trump has invited republican senators to the white house tomorrow for an urgent meeting following the collapse of the gops healthcare legislation. Jana katsuyama is in the newsroom with the options on the table tonight. Republicans control everything right now; congress and the white house. But they just could not get this bill to a vote. And already some are saying theyre not onboard with President Trumps plan b. Reporter the republican partys internal battle over healthcare reform is creating ill will within the party. President trump blasted senate republicans. We finally get a chance to repeal and replace. They dont take advantage of it. Thats disappointing. Reporter the senate bill faced sudden death after four gop senators rejected it. It wasnt a decision that was made just on the spur of the moment or just last evening. Reporter Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell announced tuesday hell call for a vote next week, a straight repeal of obamas Affordable Care act just as the gop senators did in 2015. After consulting with our members, well have the vote on the motion to proceed on the Obamacare Repeal bill early next week. Reporter the repeal would take effect in two years, giving congress a deadline for passing a replacement plan. The republican right wing praised the idea. Im in favor of moving forward with partial repeal. The Affordable Care act is so interwoven in our Healthcare System that to repeal it completely with no idea what its going to be replaced with is not the right approach. Reporter along with maine senator susan collins, three other republicans from alaska, west virginia, and ohio agree. He wants to throw up his hands rather than roll up his sleeves to work with us and solve the problem. Reporter democrats say republicans need to sit down with them at the table. Its time to move on. Its time to start over. Reporter Gregory Cochran is associate director of the health law and policy program at uc hastings. He says the republicans Campaign Promises to repeal are at odds with the political reality. Historically in the united states, when a social program has been implemented, its never been able to be repealed. Reporter cochran says the best path forward is finding bipartisan ways to improve the Affordable Care act, because a straight republican repeal could mean tens of millions of people. Democrats and republicans losing their health insurance. Once its been given, once the Entitlement Program is out there and people see it and like it, they start losing concerns about whether or not its a republican or democratic policy. President trump reportedly wants a repeal by the august recess. Insurers are already nervous saying open enrollment for their health plans begins in just three months. Im sure just the beginning of another long road to a healthcare plan. Thank you so much. Tonight the president is defending a previously undisclosed meeting between himself and russian president vladimir putin. The white house acknowledged today that the two leaders actually met twice while attending the g20 summit in germany. We initially knew about one meeting when President Trump met with putin for two hours in a formal setting which included other u. S. And russian officials. But later that same day they spoke a second time for about an hour during a dinner for the 20 heads of state. Theres no official government record of the meeting or of what the two men discussed. The president took to twitter to defend himself today saying, quote, fake news story of secret dinner with putin is sick. All g20 leaders and spouses were invited by the chancellor of germany. Press knew. Also today, President Trump announced hes picked former utah governor John Huntsman to be the new ambassador to russia. He served as ambassador to china during the obama administration. He also ran for president in 2012. Huntsman endorsed trump during last years election, then called on him to drop out of the race after the access Hollywood Tape surfaced. Torched by an arsonist twice. At 10 30 well take you inside an east Bay Development now under construction for a third time. Big wall here. And two days in a row now of significant temperature drop. The temperatures will warm up again. Ill let you know when that happens. Well see you after the break. Changes are coming to one of San Franciscos busiest muni lines. Hear from supporters and opponents. Supporters and opponents live and ride the 38 gary bus. We spoke with opponents and supporters here in the richmond district. Everyone agrees the 38 line needs improvements. What they cannot agree on is what needs to be done and how. The 38 geary is among the busiest bus lines in the city. It serves 50,000 muni riders each day along the geary corridor that extends from downtown to the richmond district. The use of side running lanes in some segments will provide the bus space to travel without being blocked by congestion. Reporter there are already dedicated bus only lanes in the downtown and union square area. The new plan calls for bus only lanes on the far right extend all the way to palm avenue. And from there, bus only lanes to be installed in the middle where the median is now as far as 34th avenue. I dont believe they should build anything in the middle. This will really be very costly. Reporter transit Officials Say it will improve bus service, making it more reliable, faster, and safer. I think its long overdue. For decades this project has been in the planning process. The project has raised concerns. To make way for the bus only lane, the project will eliminate one lane from vehicle traffic in east direction and some Parking Spaces will be gone. All across the city it seems like theyre trying to essentially phase out driving. Its harder to park. Its harder to own the car. Reporter miriam gum is assistant manager with the Hobby Company on geary. She rides muni to work every day, but questions whether this plan is worth the time and effort since transit officials estimate the bus lanes will only save passengers about 10 minutes each way. Efficiency is always good. Is it making the bus more efficient just going to make Everything Else on geary less efficient. Reporter gum says the project will hurt business since it will make it harder for customers to drive and park in the area. That has to do with the timing of the lights. Reporter david is president of a citizens group, san franciscans for sensible transit formed to try to stop the construction of this project. He says if traffic lights were timed properly and muni added buses, that would provide reliability and service. All this construction is going to force people on the side streets. Theyre not going to be too good. All this construction. Some of the merchants will make it, some of the merchants wont. At the end of the day we want to put forward a project that helps 54,000 transit riders every single day and to make it safe for people and to make it work for as many people as possible. Reporter others say the city is trying to take away the option for residents to drive. Its just moving toward trying to discourage people from using their cars at all. This fall, they plan to hold Public Meetings to get input on design. Construction could start next year and the first phase of this project could be completed in two years. Amber lee in San Francisco tonight. Thank you. Just a week after launching in the east bay, a bike sharing station in oakland has been hit by vandals. Motivate, which offers the bike program, says the bikes at the station at telegraph avenue and 58th street were replaced within 90 minutes after riders reported yesterday that the tires had been slashed. The company says its seen the same kind of thing in other cities just after the initial rollout. The Bike Sharing Program plans to have 1500 bikes at stations across the east bay by labor day. New information tonight on a missing barbecue pit and trailer stolen from olivers Grocery Store in windsor. The thief hitched it to his truck and drove away. They received a tip and say they found items related to the stolen trailer and made an arrest. 34yearold gerald colin iii was booked for theft and possession of stolen property. Police are still looking for the barbecue pit. Human remains discovered in moraga have been identified as a man reported missing 19 years ago. Richard was 37 years old when he went missing in august of 1998. Family members say he vanished after going on an afternoon hike. Earlier this year remains were found in a secluded area. State investigators were able to identify him after taking a dna sample. An autopsy was unable to determine a cause of death. However, investigators did not find signs of foul play. In Santa Cruz County the death of a 20yearold woman who fell from a cliff is being called a tragic accident. Jennifer diaz campos fell on the cliff. High winds and surf were reported at the time and the womans body had to be recovered by helicopter. Sheriffs Officials Say ocampo was with her friends and was standing about a foot from the edge of the cliff when it partially collapsed. Temperatures dropped off again today. Good news for many firefighters, at least in the bay area and for air quality. The reason for the dropoff is a slow Pressure Center to the north as it spins, it releases High Pressure if you will. So the air gets a little bit lighter and it goes up in to the inland bay valleys and cools not just us but sacramento and modesto. A significant cooldown today for many. Last couple of days. And right now not seeing a lot of fog at the coast. There is patchy fog out there right now but not a lot of it. Temperatures, you can see where the marine air is based on the green colors. Thats how far inland that air is getting so its all the way up in to livermore, close to fairfield. 11 degrees cooler in concord tonight. The winds are blowing pretty briskly. Winds 15 Miles Per Hour in oakland. 21 Miles Per Hour in fairfield. Theyre all coming out of the west, 13 at sfo and that tells you its not going to be a hot day tomorrow. Fog at the Golden Gate Bridge. Not quite but there will be as we get in to tomorrow morning. Heres the microclimate forecast. Mid 70s to upper 70s around the bay. Warmer tomorrow. Over the hill, upper 80s, low 90s in the warmest spots. Most inland spots will be mid to upper 80s but warmest spots like antioch and fairfield will be in the low 90s. Slightly warmer tomorrow. That trend wants to continue in to the bay area weekend. When i come back well dial that in for you. Still to come, star power at tonights Sonoma Stompers game. In our ne
