Jana katsuyama is here to begin our coverage. President trump called for unity against hate, but some say the president as the nations leader was too slow to distance himself from supporters and hate groups. The fallout was evident today in a protest at trump tower and the resignations of three top ceos from a president ial advisory council. Reporter some 1,000 protesters lined the path to trump tower as President Trump returned to his new york home monday. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the kkk, neonazis, White Supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as americans. Reporter a clearer condemnation with a call for unity. We must love each other, show affection for each other, and unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry, and violence. A group of protesters held an emergency protest today to destroy the monument of a confederate soldier. Engraved on the front of the statue were the words the confederate state of america. Organizers say they took down the statue in response to the violence in charlottesville. A Pro Trump Group that held a contentious free speech rally in seattle this weekend is now planning a similar demonstration in the bay area later this month. Members of Patriot Prayer held their demonstration in downtown seattle one day after the violence in virginia. Seattle police and protesters clashed during the rally and counter demonstration that lasted several hours. There was a lot of pushing and shoving, but no reports of any serious injuries. That same group has already obtained permits for a demonstration in San Franciscos crissy field on saturday, august 26th. Another Pro Trump Group is planning a rally august 27th across the bay in downtown berkeley. Counter demonstrations are also being planned. Joining us now to talk more about charlottesville, ktvu political analyst brian and the Antidefamation League San Francisco office, seth. Seth, my first question to you, you told our producer that the neonazi rally we saw in charlottesville was the largest weve seen in a decade. Why are we seeing an increase in this activity . Its a confluence of events. We had the rhetoric of the president ial campaign where many in the extreme right felt emboldened. They felt that some of their views were being legitimizeed. So thats brought them together. Weve seen the use of social media in a very effective way in the part of these extremists to come together. They feed on the reactions we saw in some of the counterprotests. They look for places like seattle, berkeley, San Francisco, where they know there will be a strong progressive presence that will meet them and draw the kind of attention theyre looking for. Brian, why did it seem like the president was so reluctant to come out forcefully against these white supremacist groups . Its inexplicable. On the day of the event, he should have come out and condemned the violence and named names. He didnt do that. And were not inside his head, so we dont really know. What were seeing, and seth puts his finger on it, is that were seeing an uptick in protests counterprotests. That leads to violence and somehow we have to get in the middle of it all. But the white supremacist groups seem to indicate they support trump and trump supports them. I think thats what has to be clarified. I think the president needs to say in no Uncertain Terms im not aligned with you and youre not with me and we have to draw this to a close. Dont look to me to be your friend. Im not your friend. Im against everything you stand for. On that note, seth, do you think that the violence weve seen is going to continue with the two rallies planned in the bay area . Do you think that will continue until the Trump Administration does that exact thing . Or do you think were just going to continue to see violence . Its hard to predict. Nobody can really say what the future is going to hold but certainly it is something these groups are craving. They look for the attention to be able to drive their message home. What wed like to see from the Trump Administration is something more than simply identifying these groups by name, as he started to do today. There are actions and a plan of action that ought to be put in place. He can mobilize the department of justice, not only to investigate this as an act of domestic terrorism but also to offer instruction to local Law Enforcement so they can find ways to track and research and handle hate crimes and hate groups. He can instruct the department of education to do antibias trainings across the schools throughout the country. And the department of Homeland Security can have something reinstated in to their budget which was cut by the current budget, which is the countering Violent Extremism Program to seek out extremism from wherever it emanates, whether its the far left or the far right. And use that funding and impetus and the bully pulpit to develop a plan of action so theres not only his words but something that follows up. These are all things President Trump can do to possibly curb or prevent continued violence. Are you worried about whats going to happen next week . We are concerned. As you said at the beginning, this is the largest gathering of extremists on the right in well over a decade. They have continued to push. Theyre looking for these kinds of opportunities and this is something that theyre really seeking out. Who benefits and who pays a price politically as these things continue . If thesis result in more violences, is the Trump White House going to be further damaged by this . His approval numbers theyre abysmal. And they will only go down. This is not good for the Trump White House. The department of justice has started to react. We heard i think positive comments from Jeff Sessions about the domestic terrorism. But those are words. Lets see if they can turn words in to action. Thats going to be the key here. Brian sobel, thank you so much. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Seth, thank you so much. Business leaders are taking to social media to speak out against white supremacist protests and in some cases the president s reaction to them as we mentioned. Intel ceo stepped down from President Trumps manufacturing counsel. Tonight he tweeted, quote, there should be no hesitation in condemning hate speech or White Supremacy by name. Intel asks our countrys leadership to do the same. Apple ceo tweeted this message weve seen the terror of White Supremacy and racist violence before. Its a moral issue and a front to america.
