Some homes were completely washed out to sea, and nearly a million customers are without power. Forecasters say fiona was the strongest hurricane of the 2022 atlantic season. At one point, it was a category four with sustained winds around 140 mph. Im hearing that theres devastation all over the island, and certainly charlottetown. Weve been hit hard here. I dont think theres a street that doesnt have a fallen tree or down power line, so we certainly are asking people to stay home. It is not safe to be out. Um and our First Responders are very overcast right now dealing with emergency situations. Forecasters are warning that fiona could still pack hurricane strength winds and bring drenching rains and huge waves. A state of emergency over Tropical Storm ian covers all of florida tonight. Governor Rhonda Santas expanded the state of emergency today, urging everyone not to wait to get ready. The storm works its way through the caribbean tonight, likely to pit florida next week. Reporter Marie Edinger shows us how people in that state are stocking up on supplies. Some people are already filling up, which is good. It means theyre getting prepared. But in situations like this, it is really easy to go into panic mode. And if people go overboard that can create a shortage. Realize that you know, there are a lot of people here that want to make sure that they have gasoline, too. There should be enough gas to go around. But if too many people buy more than they need that could change. We always like to wait and see how it goes. I feel like a little bit of media hype and pressure. And then everyone rushes so we will generally get some gas in a case of water and wait it out. Its not just about gas. Costco was packed with people prepping for the storm. Brian macdonald says hes already got some supplies at home, but he still wanted to grab some water and canned food just in case like its going to go to the west of us. Were not really going to get hit too bad, but we went through hurricane andrew. Hurricane andrew was going to carolina, then took a 90 degree turn. Christine together tropics have been fairly quiet all summer long, but it seems like for the month of september, things are ramping up. Especially just over the past few days. We have been watching fiona and as you can see that tight circulation moving up to the north, impacting canada with those torrential downpours and also the very strong winds, the latest on fiona once again no longer a hurricane, but still a very intense storm with winds of 70 miles an hour moving to the northeast and about eight miles an hour here is the eventual track into sunday and into monday yesterday at this time, were talking about a tropical depression that turned into a Tropical Storm and this is Tropical Storm ian. As you can see some development. This will eventually become Hurricane Ian right now. Winds of 50 miles an hour moving to the west at about 13 miles an hour, always tough to a forecast several days out. You cant see some of the forecast models all these different lines indicating a potential track and you can see theyre kind of kind of converging on that one line. So thats what the forecast is. At least were thinking with rallies from the hurricane center, and here is the forecast track from monday into tuesday could be impacting the western tip of cuba. Possibly as a category four storm. This is a major hurricane category three or above and then still approaching the florida category four. Well see if this happened. Its still a long ways out for wednesday and into thursday. This is possibly a weaker hurricane by that time frame, but a major event will be watching over the next several days as a Tropical Storm right now that could turn into a hurricane back here in the bay area, lots of low clouds and fog, some dense fog out toward the coast and making a push back into the bay.
