I truly consider him an ambassador from an ancient time period. Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. The government is nenlisting your help tonight in the war against the sunni Muslim Terrorist Group known as isis. The f. B. I. Posted video today of an isis fighter it is trying to identify. He speaks english, and the bureau says hes appears to have a north american accent. The f. B. I. Describes the video as a recruitment tool to attract westerners to join isis, and we have more now from our National Security correspondent david martin. And were here with the soldiers of bashad. Reporter do you know this masked man . Shifting between arabic and english, he is oh, straight the execution of prisoners in a propaganda video put out boy isis last month. The f. B. I. Posted this clip on its web site in the hopes someone might recognize him through his voice and appearance. It is part of a larger appeal for the publics assistance in identifying americans going to join or fighting with terrorist groups overseas. About a dozen are believed to have joined isis in the reign of terror across syria and iraq. Isis fighters can be clearly seen as they close in on the town of kobani in syria, right on the turkish border. American aircraft have been attacking some of the isis positions, but a pentagon official admit, we do not have the capability to save kobani from the air. The defenders of kobani are not well enough organized to take advantage of the strikes, this official said, and isis is already inside the city where airstrikes run the risk of causing civilian casualties. The siege of kobani is turning into a public lesson in the limits of american airpower, and kobani is not unique. Kobani is horrible, one pentagon official said, but right now theres a lot of horrible in iraq and syria. Pelley david martin at the pentagon. David, thank you. Tonight we have a rare look at why the f. B. I. Is so concerned about western fighters in syria. Our Clarissa Ward managed to get inside syria where isis and other rebels are fighting amid the chaos of a threeyearold civil war. Who are these men . What do they want . Clarisa found out. And winter is coming. Reporter after months of negotiations, we met a 26yearold dutch fighter called yil madz, born in holland but now one of the thousand western jihadis fighting in syria. I will fight anybody. Even if it was my own father that was bombing these people i would fight him and kill him myself. Reporter do you feel this is your home . Yes, of course. We left everything behind. When we migrated here, everything, everything our families, our friends, basically our future. Reporter heist a soldier with the dutch army, but when special forces turned him down, he quit. Around the same time the uprising in syria began. Yilmaz says his world was turned upside down by the endless, gruesome videos of the assad regimes brutal crackdown. So i felt the need as a person, as a human, and, of course, as a muslim, that i had to just stand up and do stuff. Reporter so two years ago, without telling his family, he left holland and traveled to Northern Syria to work as a military trainer with a wide range of rebel groups. Its scary. Reporter do you miss anything about home or the west . The food. Electricity. Warm water. These are the things they miss, but the west ah. Hypocrisy. Its filled with hypocrisy. Reporter yilmaz has become more extreme during his two years in syria. He does not fight with isis but he wont condemn them, either. He argues that their crimes pale in comparison to those of the assad regime. Beheading people, crucifying people its very difficult for people in the west and in the u. S. To understand how those tactics could ever be justifiable. Theyre war crimes. War crimes. Whats a war crime . More than 200,000 dead is not a war crime . Barrel bombs, Chemical Attacks is not a war crime . Reporter yilmaz ultimate goal is to overthrow the assad dictatorship but his idea of what should replace it is radically different from the u. S. Backed moderate rebels. We dont want you. We want our own laws. We dont want your rules. We want our own rules. Reporter tell me about those rules. What kind of rules. Islamic law. Its the only solution. Reporter youre speak for you, though. What about the millions of Syrian People who dont want to live under islamic law . Where are these people, then. Reporter but this isnt your country. Were fighting for our country. Reporter these days, assad is not the only enemy. Recent u. S. Led airstrikes against Islamic Militant in iraq and syria have reignited the belief that the west is fighting a war on islam. The american government, american lobby thats waging this crusade against the muslims, all around the world, theyve always been our enemy. Reporter so do you think there will be more attacks on america, more terrorist attacks . If you keep on poking and cornering a wild dog that wants nothing but the freedom, well, he will bite you, and he will bite you hard. This fight never ends, never ends. This is our religion. This is our faith. This is what we believe in. Pelley well, that may be what he believes in, but millions of muslims would be outraged by that statement right about now. Clarissa ward is joining us this evening in our london bureau. Clarissa, what happens if some of these westerners decide they want to go home . Reporter well, scott, thats the question. Yilmaz says he has no intention of returning home to holland and says that he couldnt even if he wanted to because he is simply too well known. But with this burst of antiamerican sentiment that were seeing in syria now, there are thrs concern about american jihadis who could potentially return home, and tomorrow night, we will talk to one of them and hear about his journey from a College Student from the midwest to a fighter with a group thats backed by al qaeda. Pelley and well looked for to that on tomorrows broadcast right here on the evening news. Clarissa thank you very much. If you want to talk to clarissa about all of this, you can reach her in a Facebook Chat tomorrow at noon eastern. You can find it at facebook. Com cbsnews. That is noon earn tomorrow. Isis has worked its way into the congressional elections, too. Theyre just coming up four weeks from today. Nancy cordes tells us about some campaign ads that are getting a lot of attention. Are we secure . Are we protected . Reporter the ad was released yesterday by an Arizona Republican running for congress named wendy rogers. It woaps video of american journalist james foley just before he was beheaded. Keeping us safe and secure is congress job. Kirsten sinema hasnt done her job. Reporter a democratic spokesman called the ad reprehens and i believe accused rogers of using footage of an american tragedy for political gain. But the Rogers Campaign argued it was only using Current Events to show differences between the candidates, like several other republican challengers have done. While isis grew, obama kept waiting and kay hagan kept quiet. Reporter in ad after ad, republicans fault the president and, by extension, democrats in congress for allowing isis to grow unchecked. President obama and senator shaheen seem confused about the nature of the threat. Not me. Reporter its a potent argument for outsiders. In todays cbs news poll, 36 of americans said the obama administrations policies have made the country less safe from terrorism. 77 of respondents said congress did only a fair or poor job insurgency the isis threat. Anticipating such attacks, some incumbent democrats like colorados senator mark udall have released their own ads. Intelligence committee member, chair of the committee on strategic force, determined to defeat isis with full support for american airstrikes in syria and iraq. Reporter the president opened the door for attacks by republicans on this issue when he admitted back in august that the u. S. Did not have a strategy for taking on isis in syria. But what makes this a tricky campaign issue, scott, is that he does have a strategy now, and its one that a majority of members of congress from both sides say they support.
