Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. Tonight the number of measles cases is approaching 100 and weve learned that hundreds more people may have been exposed. As of tonight, there are at least 98 cases in 14 states, most of them in california, and most linked to that outbreak at disneyland. With each case, there is more pressure for those at risk to get vaccinated and heres ben tracy. Sixyearold Rhett Krawitt has battled leukemia. His immune system is too weak from chemo therapy to get a measles vaccination. Nearly 10 of the kids at his school are not vaccinated and that worried his parents carl and jodi. If his son got meas telz could kill him. Lets say if youre not vaccinated with a medical dpevmention, you cant come to school. Reporter but there are parents who have very strong beliefs about vaccinations and say i dont want them in my kid. We rely on the people that can be immunized to be immunized to protect the rest of the population. Reporter its what doctors called herd immunity. If the vast majority of the population is immunized they help prevent meas frelz spreading to atrisk populations such as infants and the elderly. In arizona 1,000 people are being contacted for possible exposure to measles including nearly 200 children at this one hospital. Theres the father size side of me that is just bleep off and angry and wanting to protect myself family. Reporter dr. Tim jacks said his two children were exposed. One is too young to be vaccinated and one is too sick. One of the best medical advancements in our lifetime is immunizations and that has increased lifespan, it has increased health. Reporter to stop the spread in california, the Kaiser Permanente Health Care System is robo calling 150,000 patients, urging them to get vaccinated. California is in the midst of of the largest outbreak of measles in over 20 years. Reporter dr. Eddie redmayne is chief the pediatrics at kaiser. I think our fear is if this outbreak were to grow, for a pediatrician theres nothing worse than seeing a child get terribly ill. Reporter now the centers for Disease Control said today for every 1,000 children who get the measles, one to three of them will die. They also said more adults are getting measles during this outbreak than the past and scott, they attribute that to adults traveling more often. They also said if youre concerned there is no risk in getting another vaccine. Pelley and adults are more likely to suffer complications like pneumonia. Ben, thanks very much. Tonight, more snow is falling in the northeast. While new england still digs out from that blizzard that dumped as much as three feet. Towns in Central Massachusetts were hardest hit. Eastern long island, rhode island boston, and portland, maine, got about two feet. Lets check in with eric fisher, the chief meteorologist at our cbs station in boston, wbz. Eric, whats coming next . Scott now our attention is turning towards the southwestern united states, over the super bowl where i have a wet forecast the next several days. The storm is slow moving heading eastward into the weekend glowft bringing in the rain around phoenix much of arizona but a lot of snow, mountains of new mexico, into the san wans, Southwestern Colorado seeing significant snowfall over the next 48 hours. That storm heads out to the plains on saturday and starts to head eastbound. Well get an area of snow moving across the ohio valley and d. C. , philly and boston as we head towards monday. Early indications on this one several days out a broad strip of six to 12inch snows and well have to watch this one very carefully scott. Anyone who has two to three feet in their backyard needs to see the progress because if it moves a little farther north on monday there arent many places to put that additional snow. Pelley thanks, eric. In the meeft, another deadline passed without a prisoner swap. Jordan is ready to trade a failed suicide bomber for an air force pilot held by isis, the islamic terrorist group. Isis has threatened to kill the pilot, as well as a japanese journalist, but everything is on hold because the terrorists have not proved that the pilot is alive. This week, two airliners landing in seattle were evacuated and a third flying from l. A. To orlando was diverted to dallasforth worth. These were just three of the incidents recently forced by bomb threats on twitter. Bob orr is looking into the disruption. Reporter the f. B. I. Is chasing computer leads trying to find out who is behind a large number of threats made against u. S. Passenger planes. The avalanche of threats began with this incident in raleigh north carolina, january 17. Passengers on delta flight 1803 were quickly evacuated after someone tweeted there was a bomb on board. No explosive was found but in the 12 days since sources say more than 50 threats have been made against other flights. In some cases fighter jets have been scrambled to escort planes. That happened twice saturday in atlanta. Bomb squads very called to rescreen jets and luggage and f. B. I. Agents have responded to airports and control towers. Reporter the threats most of them on twitter seem to come from multiple sources. Someone used the name commander data tweeted 4 planes will explode in 10 minutes. Another identified as allahuahkbar911 warned, isis is here. We are coming for you and your families. While none of the threats has been credible, the scares have done considerable economic damage with delayed flights and disrupted travel schedules. Investigators suspect some of the hoaxes may be coming from teenaged pranksters. Homeland security secretary jeh johnson said the government is working to identify the culprits. I want to see those responsible for that kind of activity tracked down and prosecuted frankly. Reporter Officials Say those responsible seem to be feeding off all of the publicity. It will probably take an arrest, scott, and serious charnlingses against a suspect to stop this flood of threat. Pelley and a typical penalty for a bomb threat conviction is about eight months. Bob orr in our washington newsroom. Thank you, bob. We learned the first officer not the more experienced captain, was at the controls of that air asia plane that crashed into java sea. 162 people died. Heres transportation correspondent jeff pegues. Reporter flying in bad weather, air asia 8501 made an abnormally steep climb from 32,000 to 37,000 feet in 30 seconds. The plane went went into an aerodynamic stall. The Computer Technology designed to prevent that may have malfunctioned or been turned off. After that, there was a terrifying fall to the java sea. The captain of the plane had more than 20,000 hours of flying time, but the first officer who was at the controls had a fraction of that 2200 hours. Planes have become increasingly automated with pilots simply punching naf gaiks directions into computers. Chesley Sully Sullenberger is a cbs news consultant. The increasing use of increasingly complex automation in our cockpit has meant pilots get fewer opportunities to manually fly the airplanes. They have lost some of their manual flying skills and confidence in them. Reporter the consequences have been deadly. In 2009 228 people perished when air france 447 crashed into atlantic ocean. Investigators said pilots were completely surprised by technical problems. In 2013 when asiana flight crashed in San Francisco the n. T. S. B. Concluded the flight crew relied relied on Automated Systems they did not understand. Michael barr is an aviation experkt expert at the University University of southern california. I think the public should be concerned but more realistically the f. A. A. Should be concerned. The longer the pilot just sits there, the further he basically becomes a satellite to the actual airplane itself. It gets outside the loop. Reporter and were not finding a lot of disagreement on this issue scott. Tonight, the Airline Pilots association told us the best and most important safety aspect of any plane is a welltrained, highly motivated professional pilot. Pelley jeff pegues, thank you, jeff. Reporter we asked what punishment students would face if they are caught with hard liquor. Scott, officials would only say penalties will be increased for students who are found in possession of hard alcohol especially for those students who provide and purchase alcohol to minors.
