P. R. And comforted the officer first. It could be you it could have been you reporter this morning the governor stood outside the governors residence demanding justice. I wanted everybody in the world to see what the police do and how they roll, and its not right. Its not acceptable. Reporter governor mark dayton called for the department of justice to open an investigation. Would this have happened if it the passenger or driver were white . I dont think it would have. Reporter Philando Castile worked for the st. Paul Public Schools since 2002. One coworker described him as quiet, respectful and kind. I knew him as warm and funny. Antonio johnson is his cousin. Were not buying the body cameras fell off. Reporter Chris Stewart represents Alton Sterlings oldest son and his mother. Stewart says this video fuels the belief that there is an epidemic of young black men dying at the hands of black Police Officers. If you dont care, theres something wrong with you. If youre getting dessenstizeed to seeing this so many time, theres something wrong. Im just urging everybody to use restraint. Reporter former Baton Rouge Police chief knew alton sterling. So im looking at it, and it tore me up because i got to see what you all see. If i wasnt a Police Officer and i wasnt on the inside, i would be saying, look at this racist stuff, look at this, and it hurt me. I am my brother and my sisters keeper. Thats why im going to keep this uniform on, because today i wanted to quit when i saw that video. But i need for yall to support the ones of us that are right, and i need for you to stand for those that are not right. I wasnt born rich, but dont get it twisted, see how i look, my white skin is my privilege. I dont get watched when i go to the mall. If i get stopped for a ticket, it doesnt ned a brawl. I dont know what its like to go out for snacks and end up lying dead on my back. My cars never been watched or followed around, my kids dont play in parks and then get gunned down. Dubois former new York City Police detective mark claxton is director of the black Law Enforcement alliance. Mark, thanks for joining us here. Let me ask you this people are profoundly upset and shaken. How and why on the most basic level does this keep happening . It keeps happening because we fail to really learn lessons from history. And i think what youre seeing now, witnessing now and the expressions of anger and frustration by the community and by the entire nation, across the nation, is because its not about just these individuals, two cases now. Its about the history, the pattern of cases that have occurred over the last several decades involving failed shootings by Police Officers of primarily young black men. Dubois so what is it that we do to change this as an officer, as a father, as a member of the community . Certainly you have to have some idea of a solution. Absolutely. You have to change the part of the Police Culture itself. We can no longer operate under this militarized, owe thatdriven, heavy handed enforcement model. Its time to inform policing and incorporate some really serious public safety, public service, communitybased models into these structures. But we cannot, no matter what we do, we cannot avoid the conversation about the role that race has played historically in policing and take affirmative action toward improving it and penalize those who cooperate outside of the standards. Dubois mark, how do officers discuss this among themselves . They must feel as though the public has an opinion of them. Do they feel its fair, unfair . What do they say . Police officers are not in denial about it, but when you have a Police Culture that requires the outside appearance to be that were all one and we all believe the same thing, then the outside world, the civilian population believes that all Police Officers share that same mentality. But quite frankly, there are thousands of Police Officers across this country who are desperately hoping that there is a significant and comprehensive reform to change the modality of policing away from this militarized, heavy handed structure into more community service, public servicebased model. Dubois inside tonight from retired detective mark claxton. Mark, thanks so much. Thank you, maurice. Dubois president obama and Hillary Clinton posted reactions to the shooting. Donald trump has not. The president on facebook said, all americans should be deeply troubled. We can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in Law Enforcement. On twitter clinton wrote, america woke up to yet another tragedy of a life cut down too soon. Black lives matter. And at a conditional hearing, House Democrat Elijah Cummings made a plea to f. B. I. Director james comey. We cannot allow black men to continue to be slaughtered. This morning i woke up to my wife literally crying, watching the tape, and i hope you watched it. There is something wrong with this picture. Mr. Director, if you do nothing nels your 2,000 plus days left, you have got to help us get ahold of this situation. Dubois and well have more reaction from across america later in the broadcast. Now, the hearing at which you saw the f. B. I. Director was called by republicans to grill him over his recommendation not to charge Hillary Clinton in the email scandal. More on that now from jan crawford. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth . I do. Thank you. Reporter for more than four hours, f. B. I. Director james comey held his ground, staunchly defending the independence of his investigation. I did not coordinate that with anyone. The white house, the department of justice, nobody outside the f. B. I. Family had any idea what i was about to say. Reporter democrats called the republicanled hearing a sham. Everyone knows what this committee is doing. Todays hearing is political theater. Reporter but comey, appearing voluntarily, said he was eager to testify. I think she was extremely careless. I think she was negligent. Reporter he pulled no punches, like in this exchange with South Carolina republican trey gowdy. Secretary clinton said, i did not email any classified material to anyone on my email, there is no classified material. Was that true . There was classified material. Secretary clinton said she used just one device. Was that true . She used multiple devices during the four years of her term as secretary of state. Secretary clinton said, all workrelated emails were returned to the state department. Was that true . No. We found workrelated email, thousands, that were not returned. Reporter so what comey didnt find, compelling evidence clinton intended to mishandle classified information, which made her case different from those prosecuted in the past. We dont want to put people in jail unless we prove that they knew they were doing something they shouldnt do. Reporter this may not be the end of it. Comey revealed that he did not investigate whether clinton made any false statements while she was testifying under oath about her email. Maurice, republicans said they now will formally ask him to investigate whether any of her misstatements were criminal. Dubois jan crawford in washington, thank you. Also at the capitol does was donald trump, not for hearing, but for some listening and talking with fellow republicans. Heres major garrett. [siren blares]. Reporter donald trump came to capitol hill in search of unity, and for the most part he found it amongst 200 house republicans, starting with speaker paul ryan. I think we had a great meeting with the republican presumptive nominee. It was very, very encourage. Look, i dont agree with everything donald trump says. I dont agree with everything my dear mother says. Donald trump is the answer. Its his time. Its our time. This is a breath of fresh air i saw here today. Reporter despite a majority of upbeat appraisal, charlie dented of pennsylvania says trump remains a loose cannon, only interested in unity as trump and his advisers define it. They said they didnt need unity. They were pretty aggressive about that. I think thats partly what we heard again today. Reporter trump later met with senate republicans, frequent critics jeff flake of arizona confronted trump about his comments regarding latinos and criticism of prisoners of war. Unity in the room dissolved into unease. Why did you ask him about that . I wanted to talk about a few of the concerns that we have. I want to support our nominee, i really do, but given some of the statements that have been made, im finding it difficult. Reporter trump also met privately with texas senator and former president ial rival ted cruz. There was no discussion of any endorsement. He asked me if i would speak at the convention. I said i would be very glad to do so. Reporter senator ben sasse emerged from the meeting calling a trumpHillary Clinton election the political qift of a dumpster fire. Reince priebus pushed hard for unity, calling complaints from others maddening. Dubois major garrett, thank you. Coming up next on the cbs evening news, Gretchen Carlsons lawyer says more women are accusing fox news boss roger ales of sexual harassment. And later taiwan gets a direct hit from a super typhoon. Gretchen carlson is suing the man who hired her and fired her from fox news, suing him for sexual harassment. Today her lawyer said, we are prepared, girding for the bomb thats going the fall on all of us. Vinita nair has more on this. Hi, everyone. Im Gretchen Carlson. Reporter former fox news an coverwoman Gretchen Carlson says she was not the only woman sexually harassed by her former boss, roger ailes. A statement says many women have come forward to report similar sexist and harassing we heat waver by mr. Ailes. Carlson alleges she was fired because she refused his sexual advances and complained about severe and pervasive sexual harassment. Wow. Reporter according to carlson, those complaints were the reason ailes replaced her from the highly rated morning show fox and friends in 2013. When carlson, a stanford graduate and former miss america, accused other fox employees of discriminatory treatment, she claims ailes said, i think you and i should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago. In a statement to cbs news, ailes denied the accusations. Fox news provided her with more onair opportunity. Gretchen carlson may have some problems with her past statements about roger ailes. She has praised him in the past over and over again. Once you put those things in print, once youve said those things out loud, it is very hard to say simultaneously, this boss, this brilliant boss, was sexually harassing me. Reporter carlsons Attorney Says she was not allowed to speak to the press, or publish anything, including her 2015 book, without ailes approval.
