Eyewitness News ReporterAlicia Nieves headed to the philadelphia zoo to give us a peek at some of the wild reactions we may see during the eclipse. Reporter in just a few days millions of people will likely turn their eyes to the sky to witness the first total Solar Eclipse in nearly century. But what may be equally interesting to look at on monday, maybe how animals on the ground react to the rare natural phenomenon. Animals are very attentive to their environment, and primates and many on the animals are pretty smart. I can imagine them being interested in something that is different. Theyll recognize it as this is not part of our normal experience. Reporter dr. Andy baker at the philadelphia zoo is among the many animal experts around the country that will be paying close attention to wildlife during the eclipse. Its going to be fascinating. Going to be interesting to see whether we see animals that are somewhat confused or they just accept that, okay, things are a little different today. Reporter dr. Baker believes well likely see a few things from animals on monday depending on how dark it gets and if theres any change in the temperature. Those changes could trick these normally nocturnal barn owls at the zoo into suched wakely up and being active. Conversely animals that tend to rest as nightfall approaches they may suddenly start heading in when the eclipse suddenly causes it to get darker midday. Giving i was chance to potentially see a flock of peacocks for example go from lounging on the ground to racing up trees where they sleep. One team of researchers in 1984 during a different kind of eclipse observed chimps climbing to the top of their enclosure appearing to watch the eclipse and then one stood up and gestured at the direction of the sun and the moon. So on monday, theres a chance we could see some animals a iteming to enjoy the eclipse as much as we will. It will be interesting to watch. So of course our staff will be attentive to whats going on with the animals during this period. Reporter and the philadelphia zoo will actually be open on monday during the Solar Eclipse giving people a chance to observe the animals for themselves and the zoo is actually encouraging anyone had comes here to download an app on your phone.
