16 days and counting. A brandnew nbc news poll just released this morning gives us new insight into the midterms as President Biden tells me whats at stake in our exclusive interview. When you are an undergraduate school, they talk about every generation has to protect democracy. It really does and i think were at one of those Inflection Points in history. And House Speaker nancy pelosi joins me live to talk about how democrats can keep control of the house and what could happen if they dont. Im Jonathan Kaye part. And this is The Sunday Show. This sunday, the midterms are just 16 days away in a new nbc news poll shows that the economy, threats to democracy and immigration are among the top issues for voters. It also showed intense polarization. Around 80 of both republicans and democrats think the opposing parties agenda poses a threat that will quote destroy america as we know it. And while republicans are still favored to take the house, the race for the senate is still a tossup. Setting up a fierce Battle Fork Erases in the states of georgia. Nevada, arizona and pennsylvania. We have an Allstar Group to break this all down. Fernando monte, msnbc political analyst and democratic pollster. Matthew dowd, msnbc political contributor and analyst and author of revelations on the river. And ali velshi, host of velshi here on msnbc. He joins me from detroit, michigan. Where hes been talking to voters. Good morning, ali. Good morning, jonathan. Ive had a great conversation with a six detroit residents. Kind of how i do it. I go crosscountry and certify the group of evil from across the political spectrum. As you would expect, they are divided on what they think the most important issue is motivating them for this election in 16 days. There are a lot of people generally speaking those influenced by Republican Campaign ads who believe, validly, that the economy is the most important issue to them because theyre watching these prices go up. But in michigan in particular. There is a valid question about abortion. It is the question that would make abortion legal in the state of michigan. Notwithstanding federal law or jurisprudence. I put it to my panel about what the most important issues are. Whether it comes to the economy or abortion. Here is a little of what they told me. The Biggest Issue in michigan is abortion. Im hearing that from, like i said, other parents. From the women that i work with. Through my profession and families in general just people want to know that they have reproductive rights. And they have access to health care when they need it. Its not just abortion. Its lots of other services that are related. Im dealing with a lot of Different Community groups and folks. Thats whats most important right now. Can i get a job . Can i pay for my home . Can i pay my rent . Im not taking on anybody on this abortion issue. That is a luxury for some people to be that to be the number one concern. I think that again, for suburban moms in for folks outside the inner city, that might be the Biggest Issue. But for the inner cities, its about jobs. I see reproductive freedom which abortion is one part of that. As both an economic issue and a rights issue. So its both. If you are being forced to have a baby that you didnt expect to have because you were raped, thats an economic issue for you. Its going to change the rest of your life. And of course, jonathan, the issue looming over all of this, which we saw on our brandnew nbc pulling this morning. Is for a whole lot of voters, democracy itself. Is the issue. They are worried, particularly here in the state of michigan where there were a farright extremist plot to kidnap the governor, particularly where malicious tend to be active. Particularly where three people on the ballot for the most Important Office in the state. Most Important Offices in the state. Including the governor, the attorney general and the Secretary Of State our 2020 election deniers. Democracy itself is leading some people to the polls. The bottom line is were expecting high turnout in michigan like in many other states. But there are issues in this Midterm Election that are unlike any that we face in recent times, jonathan. Ali, thank you very much for showing us that clip. That was an incredible back and forth between those two folks. I want to bring in Vernon Mondean matthew dowd to jump off that and talk about that. Thank you both very much for being here. Im changing up all the questions i was just but asked because that sound start with you, that we just heard between those two voters in michigan that la talked to was incredible. Where you have one saying abortion is the top issue. You have the other guy saying no, abortions a luxury, its the economy that we should be talking about. She comes back and says abortion is an economic issue. Is abortion really going to be the issue, not just in michigan but in the races across the country . I think the answer is both. Abortion is the animating issue that has created in the sense a jump ball new election for the democrats. Democrats and women especially are supercharged by this issue. But by the same token you cannot ignore the economy. There are concerns poll after poll say it. I dont think you can choose one over the other. I think what the democrats are doing here in the endgame, in these days and weeks before the election. Its a try to make at the abortion message front and center. But at the same, time talk about how they have taken an economy from the american carnage inherited by President Biden. And turn it into something that was about a path to recovery. All the numbers and says xray that while inflation is bad, worldwide, its better here in the United States. Matthew, your reaction to what fernando said but also what you heard in that back and forth between those two michigan voters. Abortion and economy. First is were in two separate worlds as this poll shows where both sides believe the other one is a threat to america stands for overwhelmingly so were in a completely cross current place where republicans believe one thing, hundred percent democrats believe another. Hunted percent. Its the world were in today. I would argue that what the democrats should be doing is making threats to democracy the dominant issue. And relating every single other issue including the abortion, including the economy. Where if we dont have a democracy, there will be no equity, zero equity in the economy. Broaden that issue, conversation. So its about threats to democracy. Specifically about the issue. This poll points out, and if you look at the cross tabs of this poll. Which they did just now before we came on the air. The dominant issue among democratss threats to the economy. Its threats to democracy. The third or second top of the issue among persuadable voterss threats to democracy. I think democrats by and large have missed a beat. Theyve spent Three Billion dollars already on ads. In this cycle. And theyve done very little, very little threats to democracy. Thats interesting. Do you agree. Because i seem to remember awhile back, democrats were hammering away at that. And the question was, shouldnt to be focusing on abortion . Shouldnt be focusing on the economy instead . I think they have to make a fullthroated case. If you fundamentally look at whats happening here. This concerns about the economy, they speak to the National Headache and the National Concern around order legitimate issues. The problem, jonathan, the democrats are trying to offer confidence. Here is an aspirant, well get you through the situation. The republican metric is the guillotine. The pulse of your headache. When its in more extreme chaotic version. I think thats the case that the democrats have to make now. We saw the chaos in the carnage under the republican policies. Your interview with President Biden. I was struck by what he said. I think its resonating. What is the republican plan . Whether its an inflation, the economy. We know they want to do an abortion. They won a national ban. So in the absence of anything real, i think the democrats have to make that case. Its a good case to make, jonathan. To the point that he was just making about the president. Warning about a national ban. Coming as we all know. Senator Lindsey Graham has made it clear that theyll try to he will try to institute a national restriction on Abortion Rights. If they take control of congress. I asked the president about that in my interview with him on friday. Listen. What happens if republicans take control of congress . How are you going to protect women . Veto anything they do. They have to for them to make dobbs for them to outlaw roe, outlaw the right of a woman to make a choice with her doctor. To not make exceptions for rape and incest. Et cetera. And pass it out of the congress to make at the law of the land. President has to sign it. All veto it. And so matthew, for democrats, abortion is a big motivating issue. But im wondering, is it a big motivating issue for republicans who hear what senator graham says and say yeah, actually, i am for that, im going to come out and vote so that we can make that happen. I dont think theres any downside to democrats stop by freeman choice. In abortion in this election. Its way down the list for republican. They believe theyve already got what they wanted. Which in many of us believe is a nightmare for the country. But they believe they got it. Their focus, their primary dominant focus seems to be inflation an immigration and crime. That seems to be the dominant focus. I think its a motivator for democrats. But ill go back to what i said. I think democrats need to have a broader message on the threat to democracy. Where abortion and Freedom Of Choice is at stake in that. And if we lose our democracy or we lose these races, if i were democrats saying this. If i lose the democrat then all of these things, Freedom Of Choice, everything goes out the window. So thats what i would do. Brought in the argument. And make abortion part of the argument. Lets bring attention to here in florida. We are in florida. Youve got two big races here. Youve got the governors race. You have the senate race. One, can congresswoman val demings of trying to unseat senator marco rubio. Senator rubio maintains a lead. Can she close that gap in the 16 days weve got left . Anything is possible, jonathan. Weve seen race around the country where democrats look like they have a disadvantage and then overperformed on election day. And pulled out some of victory select impossible. But i gotta be honest with you. Here in florida, its a different dynamic. If florida is a harbinger for these midterms, its good news for republicans, bad knees for the democrats. Consistently, val demings, despite being a credible candidate for democrats and having a very strong debate performance earlier this week against marco rubio. Still trail significantly by four or five points. Can she close that gap . Shes going to need a lot to help especially from the National Party that right now is looking whether or not they want to invest here in these final weeks before the election. The governors race. Former governor charlie chris. Now a member of congress. Running to unseat ron desantis who is the governor. Whats that look like . That once a lot tougher. If youre a democrat. Part of the reason there is just the gargantuan financial advantage that Rhonda Sanchez has over charlie chris. Its Something Like 140 million to 5 million. When you look at it. And also the Opinion Polls or make it very clear. Hes looking at anywhere between 6 to 11 point disadvantage. Charlie chris is gonna to work very hard in these last few days to close that gap. Matthew, last question to you. Early voting and started all over the country. But folks are focused in on georgia and the huge early voting numbers in that state. My question to you is how worried should democrats be about tickets folks voting for say senator warnock for senate. But skipping the democratic candidate for governor and voting for brian kemp. The democratic candidate stacey abrams. John, this is a really important point i think youre bringing up. It five or 6 of voters in many states. And this could happen in arizona to. As well as georgia and a couple of other states. One an opportunity to demonstrate their own mind if they are bipartisan. If they can vote for a democrat for u. S. Senate, lets say for warnock and then vote for a republican gives them a sense like okay, im not a straight good voter. But might the same thing could happen in arizona where they could vote for mark kelly for the United States senate. And the crazy woman, kari lake, for governor in that race. And so those five or 6 are looking for an opportunity to split their ticket. So they can say themselves, im a bipartisan voter. I just looked over my Twitter Machine and just got a cut up on the news that congresswoman val demings received the endorsement of the miami herald. Every little bit helps. Here and so with me. Matthew dowd, thank you both very much for coming back to The Sunday Show. Thank you. In the next hour The Sunday Show, House Speaker nancy pelosi will join me live to talk about democrats chances in the Midterm Elections. In the latest in the january six investigation. And the nations going through it. Record inflation, the pandemic, still a feisty Republican Party police to bring Election Denialism and other retrograde ideas to so its no wonder the new nbc news poll released this morning. Shows that 71 of voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction for the sixth time in the last seven polling sessions. But through it all, the president joe bidens Approval Rating has held steady at 45 . I sat down with the president in an exclusive interview on friday in his home state of delaware. At the hbcu delaware state university. Mister president , thank you very much for being here. Happy to with you. Ill be honest. Im scared. Millions of americans are scared. Theyre concerned about the concerted attacks on a democracy, on voting, and how thats going to impact the Midterm Elections. Were seeing everything from governor desantiss Election Police force arresting people for alleged violations of voter fraud. Were seeing Election Workers quitting because of threats. And then on top of it, youve got election deniers. Up and down the ballot. Running for election. Chunk of them could win. So why shouldnt we be scared . I think we should be concerned. Look, theres nothing automatic democracy. When you are an undergraduate school. They talk about every generation has to protect democracy. It really does and i think were at one of those Inflection Points in history. Where weve reached a point where there has been such a division that you have what i call the mega Maga Republicans who are think that its all right to threaten violence. Think its not an appropriate to talk about how they are concerned about security but yet saw what happened on january 6th the whole world solid. I think there is reason for concern but optimist about two things. Number one, weve been here before. I believe that yes essence of who we are as a nation. So what we are as a country is really about our commitment to the basic fundamental elements that make us americans. Which is the idea of fairness, decency, honesty. Its i think baked in to the majority of the American People. And i think as long as we take seriously the threat, i dont think the threat can come to fruition. On that point, mister president , there is a startling headline in the New York Times. Let me see if i can find it. Where it said that a majority of americans believe that democracy is under threat. And yet, they dont see it as a priority. Protecting democracy. I think they do. I think under threat and concern on other issues meld. In other words, when they say its under threat, they worry about basic rights being taken away. They worry about the idea that youre going to have a people in public life talked about one another in the way they do with such bitterness. Look, you know, the organizing were unique in all of history. Where the most unique nation in the world and im not being not trying to beat our chest about it who we are as americans. Where the only nation that is not build on ethnicity, geography, whatever. Its on a notion that we hold these truths to be safe of it and. That all men and women are created equal. Weve never fully lived up to it. Weve never walked away from it. Its a core of all of this, i think, is that concern. Its a concern that the soul is sort of the breath and the essence of who we are. Ultimately gets down to not supporting violence. Not supporting making sure that you have you count the votes when theyre cast not. Intimidating anyone whos at the poll. Not intimidating anyone who wants to vote. I still think thats rockbottom core issue in america. How did we get to this point, though . Well, i think there are a number of things that happened. Number one, i think that we began to we had a leader who concluded that the truth didnt matter a whole lot. And used the modern version of the old racist kind of baiting that used to be the case, 40, 50 years ago. In parts of the country. And i think it just, i dont think enough people took it seriously to begin with. And for me, would change things for me was i hadnt planned on running again. I think you know this. Im taking too much time, stop me. When i saw those folks down in charlottesville coming out of the fields, carrying not see swastikas. Torches, singing the same Antisemitic Bile that was some at the time in the 30s and germany. And accompanied by the way to premises. The young woman got killed. And they asked, i talk to her mom. When she got killed and the president was asked, what did you think. He said there are fine people on both sides. No president has ever said anything like that. Its a reflection of this notion that whatever it takes to have power, it is appropriate. I just find it disturbing and i believe, though, that in 2020, for example, more people shouldve to vote. Than any time in american history. I think theyre going to do it again. On that point about people being in it for a power, power sake. Farright conservative person said earlier this month about the senate race in georgia. And i quote. I dont care of Herschel Walker paid to abort endangered baby eagles, i want control of the senate. You are in the senate a long time. 1973 to 2008. You know that institution inside an out. Better than anybody probably whos ever served. And that time, you served with many republicans. Many conservative republicans. Super conservative republicans. My question to you, though, mister president. Can our democracy survive with the Republican Party is it only cares about power . Well, look, i think that if we allow the Republican Party to continue to metastasize into what a minority of the party of the hole is. I think one of the reasons theres not more mainstream conservative republicans running out there is because they are so concerned about not only their physical wellbeing but also the notion that how can they win and win a majority of republicans are showing up to vote and theyre really hard edge. I dont agree with anything that liz cheney believes about the substance of issue but i admire the hell out of her. She means what she says. She doesnt support the notion of the use of violence. She doesnt support the notion of basic fundamental roles. And it used to be that way all through the senate. I served with jim eastland, strom thurmond. I served really conservative members of the United States senate. But afterwards, after we go down to the dining room, everybody would be together. There was still an understanding that the differences may be profound but they dont justify the kind of activities you see today. More of my interview with President Biden in the next hour. Later in this hour, though, you dont want to miss how i surprise my and gloria with a phone call from the commander in chief. Donald trumps announcement in 2015 of his president ial prime to mark the beginning of walltowall coverage of his candidacy by every news outlet. If trump makes another run in 2024, however, my next guest says we cant cover him like that again. Joining me now is Margaret Sullivan at, media critic and author of Newsroom Confidential from an instinct life. Margaret, it is great to see you. Welcome to The Sunday Show. Thanks so much, jonathan. Thanks for having me. Margaret, whether the press got a wrong in covering trump as a candidate and in as president . Well we and i include all of us in this i think. We normalized him. We allowed him to spew lies and misinformation by repetition. By taking rallies live. By taking press conference live. By putting the outrageous statements into headlines and tweets and news alerts. We normalize something that was very abnormal. And we never really learned how to not do that until pretty late in his presidency. So we need to be very, very careful about not normalizing in not equalizing democratically positive candidates with anti democracy candidates. Whether thats in the midterms or with trump himself. Margaret, more specific, how do we end by we i mean us in the media. How do we do that. Its a by putting the publics agenda first. By not putting clicks and outrage and craziness first. But by thinking, by being very intentional about what were doing. And how our coverage matters. We have to relentlessly give context. We have to explain what were doing. And we have to be very careful about not magnifying lies and not handing them our immediate megaphone to people who are tearing down the democracy. And thats extremely important. There is a lot of things in our Media Ecosystem that pushes in the direction of sensationalism and a horse race coverage. And so on. We need to really think about our role in the democracy and a hinge time in american history. One of the things, you mentioned how it took a little too long in the press corps to get hip to what donald trump was doing. Into cover him accordingly. But talk about the real conflict that a lot of News Side Journalists have in having a president who was outright lying and yet the traditions of the press was to not say directly that the president was lying, even though we knew the president was lying. Thats right. There was a real hesitancy to even use that word until years into his administration. And i think that eventually changed. There was a reason for that. The feeling was really not inside the president s head. And we cant say whether hes intentionally giving these falsehoods and making misstatements. But after the tenth time of that statement being made, i think we can say that thats a lie. Its similar with a word like racism or racist. The press tends to tiptoe around that. Its very important to call things what they are. Lastly, in your book, margaret. Your book entitled news from confidential. Youre right the reality based press should rededicate itself to being pro democracy. What does that look like in practice . We have to really think about what we do and how important it is. Our job is to communicate the truth to citizens. So that they can go to the polls. So they can be engaged citizens in their communities and in our nation. And if all were doing is magnifying lies and being stenographers, that is not doing the job. It calls for a mindset changed. And that has to come from the top News Organizations all the way through. I am seeing a lot of positive signs and i dont think its enough. Margaret sullivan, my former colleague at the washington post. Author of Newsroom Confidential. Americans remain deeply divided and polarized of the midterms. As we mentioned earlier, the latest nbc news poll shows 80 of republicans and democrats say the opposing partys agenda poses a threat to america as we know it. My next guest is not with the time a new book about a president who at the country when it was so divided, a civil war erupted. Joining me now, john peacham, rogers chair and the presidency at vanderbilt university. Host of the podcast, it was said. Author of and there was light, Abraham Lincoln and the american struggle. And you should note, he also occasionally advises President Biden. John, thank you very much for coming back to The Sunday Show in your book. You write the Lincoln Douglass debates matter because as lincoln knew words matter. In this and like communities public sentiment is everything. Lincoln remarked in the summer. Without with public sentiment, nothing and fail. Without it, nothing can succeed. That actually is one of Speaker Pelosis favorite, favorite quotes. From the president. He put country over everything. And famously said a house divided against itself cannot stand. How does history, how does that Thinking Guide us today . He put principal above everything else. And we often see lincoln as the master politician of this brilliant figure who maneuver it. And he was a brilliant figure who maneuver it. But the reason i want to do this book. Jonathan, as you know, lincoln is not an undercover subject. I dont think im rescuing him from obscurity. But i wanted to note not just how he did what he did but why. He lost two senate races in the 1850s. He only won 39 of the vote in 1860. He was an anti slavery politician. Thats not to celebrate him mindlessly. But he personally believed that slavery had to be contained to its existing theater in the hopes that it would be on a path as he put it to ultimate extinction. Over and against an interest that saw slavery as a positive good. The white south wanted slavery to expand. Not just to the western territories. But they wanted to take cuba. They want to take parts of mexico. There was a Mercenary Ban that actually reinstituted slavery in nicaragua in the late 18 50s. They had this vision that slavery is going to be an empire. It was called the golden circle. And the foot soldiers of that were the nights of the golden circle. Havana was going to be at the center. This is going to be a perpetual empire for slavery. Lincoln knew this. He understood it. And he would not bid on fighting that force. And so the lesson for us is there are some things that are more important than simply winning elections or being popular. And for lincoln, it was in fact that we were all created equal. He believed in the Declaration Of Independence. He was the one who elevated the Declaration Of Independence it was almost an had of a secondary status in the American Mind to the constitution. Heading into the civil war. But it was lincoln who returned us to that Mission Statement as opposed to the users guide. I think for us, if we put the practice an accumulation of power over the principle that were created equal and that this Journey Towards a more Perfect Union is the best thing weve got, even if its not the best thing that could be. Then we really are staring into an abyss. So it requires as fredericton was set up for the conscious of the nation to be roused. In listening to your response there, it, john. Listening to really the History Lesson you are given to us. The big thing was president lincoln openly, vocally ran against slavery. At a time when everybody wanted to keep that horrible institution in place. It made me think of where the Republican Party is now. The party of lincoln. Where you cant get republicans to even say that trump lost the election. The 2020 election was a free and fair election. That joe biden is the legitimately elected president of the United States. Why, how has the republican the party of Lincoln Fallen so far from the man whos been its standard bearer since the beginning . I think about this all the time. Obviously, you and i have discussed through the years. I really believe that its a failure of conscience. I think that its a almost its not almost, it is a moral question. And morrow means how we are with each other. So do we see each others enemies or his neighbors . Too many people who denied the election of 2020 and who therefore are Sowing Distrust and seeking explicit power over the Election Machinery of 2022 and 2024. Theyre putting themselves above all else. Which is the central drama of human nature. It goes back, since sunday morning. It goes back to genesis. Its putting your own appetite and your own ambition over everything else. And democracy requires us not just to take, which is the natural human impulse, but also to give. Democracy requires us to win humbly and lose graciously. Otherwise, it doesnt work. Otherwise, were back and lincoln knew this were back in just a hobbs ian struggle. The war of all against all. I would say this. Democracy is counterintuitive. I believe. Our natural impulse is to grab everything we can for ourselves. Democracy calls on us, as lincoln saw that this last best hope. Called on us to lend a hand as well as to take one. Jon meacham, as always, thank you very much for coming to The Sunday Show. And sharing your insight and perspective with us. There is a little more than two weeks into the Midterm Elections. According to a brandnew nbc news poll, 70 of voters expressed a high interest in the upcoming election, higher than the last three midterms. Democrats are hitting the Campaign Trail hard to capitalize on that enthusiasm, as they try to convince voters that there is the party best equipped to handle the top issues, like inflation, Abortion Rights and protecting our very democracy. But there is a growing fear among democrats that the momentum they saw a few weeks ago mate be slipping away. Joining me now is the speaker of the house, representative nancy pelosi. Madam speaker, welcome back to The Sunday Show. Good morning, my pleasure to be here. Good morning. Madam speaker, as you well know, republicans only need a net gain of five seats. You are always confident that the democrats prospects are golden and good. But do you think democrats can keep the chamber with such a slim majority . Yes i. Let me address what you have already set. I have been in the last month or so, to over 20 states. I have seen on the ground what is happening among the democrats. It is all very positive. They understand that our democracy and our rights on the ballot, that the planet and its safety is on the ballot. That our economy is on the ballot. But also understand the difference between inflation and Cost Of Living. Inflation is a global phenomenon. It is higher, in the european union, it is higher in the united kingdom. In england, so this is something that has to be addressed. Yes. But this is something we have been addressing even before this recent explosion of the inflation. We have been trying for decades to lower the cost of Prescription Drugs, and we have done so without one republican vote. Lowering the cost of Prescription Drugs as well as having a cap on what seniors on medicare will pay for Prescription Drugs, lowering the cost of energy with that one republican vote. We also know that under President Biden, who has been a great president , we have cut in half unemployment from a little more than 7 to 3 and a half percent, that the deficit has come down from 2. 8 to 1. 4, cut in half the deficit. So the Cost Of Living as well as reducing the deficit has been a successful demonstration of what the president is trying to do. Thats indicative, republicans say of inflation. They dont have a solution to inflation, because they dont even have one vote in favor of reducing the Cost Of Living for americas working families. Their solution is to extend their tax cuts. They give all of their benefits to the high and. Madam speaker, let me jump in here on the economy. Because i hear you on all of the good things the president has said. I even asked the president , why is it that the voting public trust democrats when it comes to stewardship of the economy, despite wage increases, record low unemployment, record job creation . Why dont the American People, according to the surveys trust democrats and instead trust republicans . Let me just say, you talked about what you perceive to be a change in momentum. Let me just tell you what i have seen over this past month. I dont subscribe to what you said, that they dont trust us. The fact is that in the last few weeks, the republicans are now recognizing that they have a problem in this election, and you are telling them they will win in a year and a half. But they are seeing what is happening on the ground. So they have placed Unlimited Money, Unlimited Money into these races with unlimited fact, misrepresenting what the reality is. And that takes its toll, there is just no question. We will have unlimited, we will have to have enough, but we have to fight that perception that we are putting out there of inflation, that they dont have one solution and we are saying no, inflation we will have to address this. But bringing down the Cost Of Living costs bigger paychecks with our legislation, lower costs with our legislation and safer communities. So again what you see in that change is not a lack of trust of democrats, but a Big Infusion Of big, dark, special interests. Spot fossil fuels, guns, Pharma Money Coming after us. Madam speaker, one of the questions i asked the president , starting to ask the president , i told him i am scared. Millions of americans are scared. That is because of what is going on within the Republican Party. I want to read a quote from congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene, that she told the New York Times magazine, where she said about the potential of a Speaker Shift of Kevin Mccarthy. She says quote, i think that to be the best speaker of the house and to please the base, he is going to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway. Madam speaker, why should that prospect worry the American People . I dont have any time to dwell on not winning the house. So look, that is so scary, i agree with you. There is reason to be scared when we hear that. But the fact is we only intend to win. We have far superior candidates. Our nominees are challengers, should we say and our incumbents are far superior. Better candidates, well organized on the ground, owning the ground with our mobilization. Clear with our message into these districts. Maybe you want to overturn Social Security and medicare or you want to have a national ban on abortion, you want to respect the womans right to choose. We had a planet that was safe for future generations, or you want to call it a hoax. Our message, contrast between the candidates who are on the ballot, having nothing to do with you, me, the president or anything else. What is the choice that these people have . So our focus is on winning the election. I mean, you hear them say they will not support ukraine, possibly . We have never said anybody had a blank check. Ukraine has handled our contribution for their fight for democracy, which is a fight for all of us with great integrity, with great transparency, with great accountability. So when we say we are not giving a blank check, the impetus is to be drawn the perhaps someone is drawing a blank check, no. But be very wary of them walking away from our support for democracy. And i wanted to bring that up, because that has more salient than anything that he has said. Let me get your reaction really quickly. Do you think that comment which was made by House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy about a blank check, is that a disqualifying comment for someone third in line to the presidency . Was not clear . We are going to win this election no, i understand. I understand. I mean, i dont know if this is disqualifying, but it, people should take that into consideration if they care about democracy. And democracy is on the ballot. Not just because of the support for ukraine, but because of trying to nullify elections, overturning elections, voter suppression, overturning them because they dont like the outcome, a very clear way i have given notice. It is not just nullifying but given the impression that the elections will be taking place. There is something very wrong with that. But again, democracy on a ballot. We want it to be strong. The planet on the ballot, we want it to be safe. Our values on the ballot, we want them to be respected and we fully intend to win. Well, speaking of democracy on the ballot, all right, take it to the bank. I have to ask about the january Six Committee. On friday, they officially subpoenaed donald trump. Do you think he will actually appear for the deposition . What is a say to the American People if he does not . I dont think he is man enough to show up. Sorry, Madam Speaker. I literally could not hear what you said. I said, you asked me if i thought he would show up . And i said, i dont think he is man enough to show up. I dont think that his lawyers will want him to show up, because he has to testify under oath. But i dont think he is man enough, we will see if he is man enough to show up. And the public can make their judgment no one is above the law if we believe that, then they should make a judgment about how he responds to that request. And if he does not respond to that request, what should the American People take from that . They should take that he thinks he is above the law, whatever actions the committee might take is up to them. I kept my distance from their decision making. But whatever they decide will also send a message about his respect. Its an oath we take to protect and defend the constitution of the United States. That is a serious oath that we all take. Clearly, the rest of us had more respect for the office he held, then he had. We are talking about the future. Babies born now it will live into the next century. We want to make sure we have a world which is safe for them, democracy which is strong for them, values which are respected, the dignity and worth of every person. Speaker of the house, congresswoman from california, madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Thank you as always for coming to The Sunday Show. My pleasure. Jonathan, thank. You love to your mom and to your auntie. [laughs] all right. They are both watching, they just heard that. Thank you, Madam Speaker when we return, after being called to testify by the january six select committee this week, donald trump responded at a rally in texas last night. What he said, next. E said, next i have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Now, theres skyrizi. Things are getting clearer i feel free to bare my skin yeah, thats all me nothing and me go hand in hand nothing on my skin thats my new plan nothing is everything achieve clearer skin with skyrizi. 3 out of 4 people achieved 90 clearer skin at 4 months. These crooked people, these crooked people are the, the only thing that they dont want to investigate, the only thing they dont want to you, they will not investigate, was the corruption that took place in that election, which was massive. Wow, former President Trump spoke yesterday at a rally in texas, responding to the january Six Committee subpoena for the first time. And as you heard, he repeated his lie that the 2020 election was corrupt. His deposition is scheduled for november 14th. He might talk big, but we now know what will happen if he does not show. Trumps longtime ally, steve bannon was sentenced to four months in prison on friday for defying a subpoena from the committee. Joining me now, Charles Comey junior, former brooklyn prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst. And Kimberly Atkins store, Senior Writer and columnist of the boston globe. Also a cohost of the hashtag sisters in law podcast. Thank you both so much for coming back to The Sunday Show, charles, unlike bannon, trump does not seem to be risking much if he does not comply because he can simply wait out the canadians of the republicans will take back the house, but do you think hell actually appear to the deposition . Jonathan, regardless of what donald trump says on the road, regardless of what it does is accolades, what he shouts from the mountain tops during different rallies, i can tell you, the answers it resounding no. Donald trump knows and has also been advised that it is in his best interest to do everything he can to delay this until after the elections, because he knows more than likely, come january, on a new Congress Takes office, this committee is likely going to be dissolved. Because of that he knows if you want to resist the subpoena, if you want to claim Executive Privilege and fight it out in court over the documents that made it through the subpoena, by a committee, ultimately this will be something, and he will be in position where this will be an issue once the committee is resolved. So we can talk the talk but he also knows that it is more than likely not, he will ever step foot in front of congress and testified before that committee. You know, kimberly, listening to charles, that makes me think of something rather than fast forwarding to you know, going to jail if he defies the subpoena then, the committee that has to decide on a criminal referral, that is a whole new kettle of fish, isnt it . Yes. But i think that is one reason why the timing over here, with the bannon sentencing is key. Even if donald trump runs out the clock, if he refuses to sit before the committee and if it expands for the get testimony, that does erased a Potential Liability here for contempt of congress. It does come with criminal penalties, and bannon is an example of that. It will be up to the committee and Justice Department to decide whether they would want to pursue those charges. I am sure they would way a lot of factors including the public reaction to it. But it does not take that potential Criminal Liability away even if he does not testify, runs out the clock in the committee no longer exists. Charles, we should switch gears here and talk about senator Lindsey Graham. Hes asked the Supreme Court to halt a subpoena which would have him testify in the investigation of trump which is happening in georgia about potential interference in the 2020 election. Does his request have any legal merit . You know jonathan, the short answer is no, again. I think that we have heard that from the 11th circuit and the court of appeals, where he basically tried to argue that. He was covered in terms of these two phone calls, under the speech and calls, the speech, if people do not know, especially protect members of congress, members of the senate for conversations, for things that are statements, made in the commission of their duties, with United States senators or as United States congressman. So things related to legislation, things related to policy, things that are related to their duties as legislators are protected when they say them. I dont see a world in which a Court Decides that these two phone calls related to the 2020 election that Lindsey Graham made, somehow, are covered by the speech and debate clause. Thats his main defense as to why he should not have to testify in front of the grand jury down in the county. But i dont think he has a legal basis and i dont see this as a way for him right now. Kimberly, we have 90 seconds left. But i have to ask you, the one investigation which wont be disbanded, no matter who maintains, gets the majority after the Midterm Elections is the Justice Departments investigation of those maralago documents, the Renewed Reporting that the fbi found documents containing classified intel on iran and china, that seem to be missing. What, what do you, what do you make of this . And the fact that we now know this new piece of information, should we start to think that the former president is in even deeper legal peril than we can imagine . I think potentially, yes. I think one thing that this latest bit of information underscores is i think some people may dismiss this investigation by saying, okay, he was the president , he took somethings home, what is the big deal . The big deals National Security. And if there is sensitive information, particularly about adversaries like china and iran, that can be incredibly dangerous, not only to u. S. National security, but to the National Security of our allies, like israel. We already know this is a president who was careless with classified information while he was in office. There is no place, there is no scif, no secure place at maralago for any of these documents to be. And so, if this is the case, he could face serious Criminal Liability for that, not just for the president ial records act, but for National Security violations here. So the more we hear about this, the more concerning it really is. We will have to leave it there. Kimberly atkins stohr and Charles Coleman junior, as always, thank you both for coming to The Sunday Show. Up next, more of my exclusive interview with President Biden that you have not seen. But we save the best for last. Listen, as President Biden describes how he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris is doing, and just why he called himself old joe biden when he called my and gloria. From delaware state university, hbcu, in your home state. Of course, this makes me probably think of the most preeminent hbcu graduate in the United States, the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. How is it doing . Shes two years in, how is she doing . She is doing great. First of all, she is smart as hell. She has a backbone, and enormous integrity. But if you take a look out there, there is not any public figure that is, you know, 60 favorable ratings. But she is doing a great job. And she is really, really thoroughly informed. Particularly on areas of Foreign Policy, National Security issues. So i find her to be extremely, extremely well qualified and a great asset. We have lunch once a week. And there is nothing that she is cut off from. We engage her in everything. But it is, i think she is doing a great job. Since we are on a college campus, you gave a speech about college affordability, or student loan program, which got a couple of winds yesterday, with judges ruling in your programs favor. Mister president , in addition to that you also did that Blanket Pardon for people, with federal charges of simple marijuana possession. The commentary is you did this as a way of getting the youth vote. Do you think that is going to work . I got 60 of the youth vote last time and did not do that. But here is what it is. It is not what is going to work, it is what is fair. The idea that someone would sit in a federal prison for the possession and use, not the sale, not the sale to minors, not the trafficking, but just the possession, sitting in a federal prison, makes no sense to me. None. And it just, anyways, so i have been thinking about this for a long time. Ive done a fair amount of research, on whether or not just the mere use of marijuana, not talking about legalizing it, by the use of it, is so detrimental. The idea of putting someone in prison, and then jonathan, what happens is, what happens is everything about their background gets put on hold. They cant borrow money. They cant buy a house, because they have a record. They have been in a federal prison. Its not just they have been out of prison, but wipe the record clean, wipe it clean. Theres no rationale, mind you, for someone, thousands of young people to be in a situation where they are put behind the eight ball the rest of their life because they used marijuana. Mister president , i cannot be with you and not ask you a question concerning my and gloria, who you may recall was your biggest fan in 2020, because she said, we need an old white duty to take on an old white dude. [laughs] when i asked her if you should run for election, still, she loves you but she said she is not sure that you should. Given your age. That was her one caveat, if donald trump runs again, you absolutely have to run again. So lets say trump does not run again. Convince aunt gloria that she should stick with you . Well i think aunt gloria should take a look, i think its a legitimate thing to be concerned about, anyones age, including mine. Thats totally a predicament. But the best way to make a judgment is to, you know, watch me. Am i slowing up . Do i not have the same pace . And that old joke, you know, everybody talks about the new 70s, 50s, all that stuff . It could be, i am a Great Respect or of faith. I could get a disease tomorrow, drop dead tomorrow. In terms of my energy level, in terms of how much i am able to do, i think people should look and see, does he still have the same passion for what he is doing . If they think i do, then it is fine. If not, they should vote against me. This would encourage me not to go, but that is not how i feel. I cant even get it out of my mouth. I swear to god it is like, no. Come on, that cant be true you know i am not joking . I know you are not joking [laughs] but it is just strange. While, i think aunt gloria should take a real, hard look. And if she concludes i am missing a beat, then you know, she should support some other democrat if they decide to run. But jonathan, right now, Knock On Wood, i do not want to jinx myself, i am in good health. All of my, physically, everything about me is still functioning well. Developmentally as well. So, but i understand people wanting to ask that question. Which is the better job, senator or president . Theres only one reason, i like to be in public life, and that is, can you make life better for other people . There is no place you have a better opportunity to do that then as president of the United States. The difference between being a president , a senator, a Quote Unquote important senator, chairman, committees and all of that is that, nothing gets to the president that had not gotten to him because its not been solved in the meantime. So it is one of the things, the difficult part of the senate, literally, i get up to work at 8 00 in the morning, i go to bed at 11 00 at night. And they send me, tell my stuff, my staff not to get those big briefings when i walk out the door. [laughs] all kidding aside, theres not a whole lot out there, but am i going to say something, i do consider not saying it. Go say it. I have more experience on the issues facing the country, both in Foreign Policy and domestic policy than any president ever, and its because of my around schooling doing this. That part of it is, i feel like i am in the right position to make the right decisions. Some of the decisions are, they are almost toss ups, they are hard. And i am not saying i get everything right, but it is not the facts that are missing, it is the judgment about the other players. For example, i know every major world leader, i have known them for the last 20 years because of my role. As Vice President , i did a lot of Foreign Policy through the president. A lot of it is, well the same in the senate, knowing, accurately assessing what the other guy, womans thinking, and how to get to go. Because i still think, there is an enormous possibility, to compromise on important things. Cant always get it your own way, but you can move it a long way. And i just, right now, who knows what happens . Look, you know my history. I was elected to the senate when i was 29, thought i was at the top of the world. Six weeks later, my wife and daughter were killed, my two boys almost died because they were struck by a tractor trailer. I respect faith. But right now, i feel completely capable of doing the job as well as anybody can do the job. And, we will see. And up next, with the new movie, till, through the eyes of emmett tills family, i will talk to one of his cousins, still fighting for justice, when we come back. K. The film till tells the story, not just of the torture and lynching of emmett till in 1955, but the strength and power of his mother, Mamie Till Who decided you show the world what was done to her son was among the most pivotal moments of the civil rights movement. Joining me now is debra watts, cousin of emmett till and cofounder of the emmett till legacy foundation. Miss watts, thank you very much for coming to The Sunday Show. What was it like for you to watch this film . It was first of, all it is a privilege and an honor to be here. And this movie, it our family. So watching it, there are a lot of mixed emotions, one of just being proud that mamie till would be so happy and ecstatic that this movie is taking place. Secondly, seeing this true story played out in such a powerful way. I am so appreciative of all the directors, actors and others, producers, rioters who played a key role in making sure this story is told the way that it is told. And it is powerful. I want to play another clip, this one of mamie talking with her own mother. We have never been apart this long. But he is just going to see his cousins, it is not a bad thing for him to know what he comes from . Chuck aga is all he needs to know. I dont want him seeing himself the way those people are seen out there. Those people like me . Even you left mississippi, mom. Mamie, bo is growing up. You are going to have to let him go. What does that bring up for you . Oh, seeing those women who have had to endure the kind of racism, prejudice, that they were able to move forward from in chicago gives me great pride, because i knew him, and i knew what they endured and what they survived. And how they were able to bring so much dignity and care, and comfort to our family. Those two women. And it also says that we have a long way to go, because mississippi, and our country is still needing to move forward from the kind of prejudiced and hatred that they have experienced. So i just know that we are working very hard, our family, many many of our Family Members to try to move things forward, just as they would want us to do. Emmett did not really know what he was getting into, none of us really understand this part of the dna in america, he hatred. So it is unheard of, it is unexpected, certainly not something we are trained to deal with in our country. We had a blueprint for it, i dont think we would be sitting here talking about the same things that were talked about in 1955. Right. Last question to you in the time we have left, miss watts, a Statue Of Emmett was unveiled in greenwood, mississippi on friday. I would love to get your thoughts on that. Yes. I believe that the statue, i tell you, i cried this morning when i saw it. And i cried because i know that young man, that child still does not have justice. So i would hope that those in greenwood mississippi, Lafleur County would find it in their hearts to write a horrible wrong. But i hope it will give some people hope that changes coming. But i believe change is coming when there is justice, truth and accountability for emmett till. So that is my hope, my prayer. And i just hope that justice prevails. Caroline bryant donovan is still alive, and she has not been charged. We just need the warrant served to her. And for those citizens there, standing so proud, looking at that statue, that they will stand up for emmett one last time, and indict Caroline Bryant donovan. Deborah watts, cousin of emmett till. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had the line of the morning when i asked her if she thought donald trump would comply with the subpoena from the january Six Committee. Listen to what she had to say. I dont think that he is man enough to show up. I dont think that his lawyers will want him to show up, because he has to testify under oath. But, i dont think he will show up, i dont think he is man enough we will see, we will see if he is man enough to show up. [laughs] how many times did she say man enough . Donny now, adrian out, strategist and former senior aide for the biden harris campaign, and terrace at meyer, former gop Congressional Communications director and senior adviser, to the lincoln project. Okay, adrian, tara, i have to tell you i was like, hold up, what . What did you just say . Madam speaker, i would love to have each of you give your reactions to the speaker of the house. Adrian, you are making your debut on The Sunday Show, so you go first. Yes, jonathan. First of all there is no one who is better at kind of doing a little passive aggressive, i guess maybe not so passive aggressive answer to trump. The shade is real, it is fantastic. She is exactly right. What she is doing here is getting out in front of what we think will probably happen, where donald trump will find every excuse to not show up in person. You know, so she is going out there saying what i think a lot of us are thinking. She is making him look even that much smaller throughout the process, if i can say. I dont think he is man enough, very smart move on her part. Whether or not he shows up in person or whether or not he provides the enters behind closed doors, whatever it takes, this is a historic moment, that a former sitting president of the United States is being called, subpoenaed in front of a committee. I dont think we can lose sight of that. And tara, again, her words ring in my ears. I am thinking, Speaker Pelosi . She is just you know, not just taking a smack at him. It is like she is baiting him, getting under his skin. It is like she is begging for him to respond. Sure. Because she knows that his manhood being called into question has been something that is his achilles heel, for donald trump. Nancy pelosi has emasculated donald trump throughout her tenure as speaker, and during his presidency. How many times do we need to count it . We saw her leadership on january six, where she took over, was a leader, stood up where he did not. We have seen many times over, she has taken it to him. And it bothers him. Donald trumps entire life has been trying to prove his man enough in one respect or another. I think we already know the answer to that, if not, ask stormy daniels. [laughs] tara, every time every time you are on, you rendered me speechless speaking of emasculating donald trump, i keep thinking of the famous photo during the Trump Administration of Speaker Pelosi, leaning over the table. I believe it was in the cabinet room, pointing at him, way that. But anyways, enough about him, and her on this question. I will play what congresswoman liz cheney had to say on meet the press on the question about trump testifying, the possibility of it even being a live testimony. We will talk about that, on the other side. Is the committee open, that is supposed offer, the offer of going on Live Television . So the committee treats this matter with great seriousness. We are going to proceed in terms of the questioning of the former president under oath. It might take multiple days. It will be done with a level of rigor, discipline and the seriousness that it deserves. We will not allow the former president , he will not turn this into a circus. Adrian, is that hope springs eternal . Because if he testifies, live on television, how, how are they how . I dont see how this does not become a circus . Jonathan, i think thats probably why he would not testify live in person. I think what they might end up doing, if they end up with testimony, a video camera behind the scenes, probably it would be to play very specific clips of their testimony, creating an overall narrative they are doing. She is exactly right. We know what donald trump will be doing, the only reason why he want to testify in person, because he could make this into a circus, he can make this into a spectacle, he can get into this moment back on primetime television, which we have not seen a lot of in a while. So again i think, the way that this committee has handled the entire process has been so smart, so emphatically. Methodical. I dont think it allowed him to have the bully pulpit in the way that he tries to create a spectacle, tries to take it away from the seriousness of the matter. Away tara, what do you think . We are acting, acting as though donald trump is actually considering, with any good faith, but he is complying with this subpoena, right . He is not going to do that. Lets be honest here, they set the date for the second week of november, potentially . If democrats lose the house, donald trump will most likely declare he is running for president the day after. And then he will scoff at anything that has to do with any kind of legal oversight by the congress. He is not going to do this. If he does, i will be shocked. He is a professional it helps him in his debates, with republicans, and makes the committee look as though it is politicized if they do this after the election. Not saying its the right thing to do, i praise the january Six Committee, they have done an extraordinary job. And liz cheney should be commended for the work that she has done. Because speaking about not being man enough, liz cheney has emasculated the hell out of donald trump, all of the leadership as well, starting with Kevin Mccarthy. So they have done a great job of that, but does that translate with the American People . I am not so sure, that is what was alarming to me. Because democracy is on the ballot. You have these democracy deniers in various offices across the country, who might potentially win on november 8th. That is what we should be most focused on, worried about. The idea of donald trump, whether he testifies or not, i think it is moot at this point, because he will probably announce he is running for president on november 9th. Well, tara sent my, adrian arod, we have 16 days to see what the American People have to say. Tara setmayer, adrian elrod. Dont think i did not notice, adrian, bernie, curled up in the background. Thank you bernie, for also coming to The Sunday Show. Have a good rest of your weekend thanks, jonathan. We will be right back. E will be right back depression. It made me feel trapped in a fog.
