Following in the footsteps of his father who was a new York City Police department officer, and he died 22 years ago today, along with his brother who was a firefighter. This young man says service is in his dna. His mother is also was a police officer. It almost seems like it never crossed his mind not to follow in their footsteps. I said to him, considering what happened to your dad and uncle, dont you realize how dangerous this job is. He said, i do, but i also know i have to do this because its a part of my dna. We hear a lot of stories like that of young people whose parents, firefighters who died. He lost more than 343 firefighters on this day. Now children of those firefighters have become firefighters themselves. Theres such a tremendous sense of honor and gratitude for the sacrifice that the people made here. It is hard for people to go forward and go on without honoring that sacrifice, some of the children, begin doing what their loved one did for them and offering themselves up for service. This is obviously an event that has transformed our world, our country and so many lives in such a deep, deep, deep way. We are anticipaing another Moment Of Silence about a minute from now. As we await that moment, well takive live again. Monica, we know the president plans to address troops in alaska later today as we makes his way back from his overseas summit. What will his message be for the country today . Reporter the president is expected to address about a thousand service members, their families, First Responders at an Air Force Base in anchorage, alaska where he will be talking to them about how today is a day to reflect, to think about this sense of renewal and really to honor the resolve of the American People and those who lost so much on that day 22 years ago. Now, of course, this is a little bit less traditional for the president since he is wrapping up that overseas travel, but hes doing this event in alaska because its basically a way for him to mark the occasion while entering u. S. Airspace and as quickly as he can on that somer day. He will be there while Vice President harris monica, please stand by. We want to take another Moment Of Silence. [ bell tolling ] [ Moment Of Silence ]. Joan donna griffin. Ramon b. Grijalvo. David joseph okay. That was a Moment Of Silence marking the moment flight 93 crashed in shanksville or near shanksville, pennsylvania, when those brave passengers confronted the hijackers of that flight and they continue to read the names of nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on that fateful day. Monica, please continue. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will represent the Biden Administration. Hell be there as part of that ceremony. Vice president harris paid her respects at ground zero in New York City. First Lady Jill Biden went to participate in the traditional Wreath Laying Ceremony at the pentagon earlier this morning. So all angles of this white house and administration honoring those participating in these memorial services, and the fact that the president is going to be speaking at a Military Base in alaska, in particular im told, is meant to send this message that so many people after 9 11 were inspired to join the armed forces, and that that is a Ripple Effect that isnt always talked about as much. So thats something the white house wants to honor today, and the president will certainly thank those who so bravely will be a part of that day and the response, but also in the years and decades since when it comes to that public service. He will mark that moment there before returning here to the white house later today where there is a small memorial, two american flags draped over the north portico here to honor that. The Biden Administration also is announcing today, pledging about 4 million to the New York City memorial and museum there through part of a federal program, continuing to support that as everybody is thinking of those who lost their lives, the families and, again, looking back, but also trying to recognize the strength of those all these years later. Of course, the Health Effects are still impacting so Many Americans who were part of the response that day and the days that followed. So many lives lost in the years after 9 11 because of the toxins that were at the site. Rehema, whats really also quite interesting is that the work still continues today to identify remains of those who were lost at ground zero. This has been a painstaking mission for two decades now. What can you tell us about those efforts . Reporter thankfully, for two families, just friday the mayor and Chief Medical Examiner announced they had identified the remains of two people that died on that day as a result of enhanced dna technology. Theyve been able to match these remains with that of a man and woman. The families of these victims have asked their names not be released at this point. But it is as you point out, ana, this is an ongoing task for the city. There are about a thousand Human Remains that are still unidentified. Authorities say that task is going to go on endlessly until they have identified everyone. In the interim, as you also point out, Tens Of Thousands of families are still feeling Health Effects from what happened here at ground zero. Sadly, we know more than 4,000 people have died as a result of 9 11 illnesses. Even in the fire department, their casualties continue, now up to 341 who have died since this day 22 years ago, on this day, 343 New York City firefighters died. While this may be over for some people, its not over for Tens Of Thousands of people in this country because the illnesses go on, the pain of death goes on, and the memory continues about what happened here on September 11th in 2001. So well put. Rehema, i know the new York Fire Department added 43 names to the memorial just this year. Rehema ellis, monica alba, thank you both for being part of this remembrance. Well continue to monitor events and bring you additional live moments as they happen right here on msnbc. Were also following the Breaking News out of morocco this morning where the death toll from the devastating earth quick has now topped 2,400. Thousands more were injured as buildings collapsed during fridays 6. 8 magnitude earthquake. So now an urgent and International Effort to under way to rescue and help as many people as possible with many survivors now forced to sleep on the streets after their homes were destroyed. Here you see desperation as hundreds lined up earlier this morning for basic aid like food and clothes. Joining us from morocco is nbcs raf sanchez. Raf, what are you seeing, what are you hearing now that youve arrived there . We are seeing devastation all across the disaster zone. As you said, the moroccan military updating the death toll to 2,400 this morning. That number is climbing. Some of the worst damage weve seen is in remote mountain communities. To get here, you have to drive up a treacherous winding road. It is that remoteness which is complicating the race against time to find survivors. This morning the desperate search for survivors entering a critical phase. Rescue teams from morocco and Around The World racing to make every minute count. Its now been more than 48 hours since this 6. 8 magnitude quake struck south of marrakech. The most powerful tremor in this region for more than a hundred years sending locals and tourists alike running for their lives. This Wedding Singer cut off mid song. Petrified. Some people were crying and screaming. Reporter the worst of the devastation in remote villages in the high Atlas Mountains where adobe homes couldnt withstand the force of the quake. Moments of exhausted joy when survivors are found in the rubble. But also heartbreak when rescuers arrive too late. Working in these situations, Search And Rescue is still of paramount importance. Reporter we traveled up a winding Mountain Road to reach the village of moulay brahim. Locals say at least 40 have been killed here, more than 1 of the population. Reporter among them, this mans three daughters, baby son and wife. Im all alone now he says. I had a home and a family. Now i have nothing. This i. D. Card, the only photograph he has left. The u. N. Says 300,000 people across the region were impacted by the quake. In small villages and major cities, many families are still sleeping in the streets, terrified that aftershocks could yet bring their homes crashing down. Ana, in terms of half shock, you can see the house behind me is partially collapsed. It wouldnt take much for it to collapse completely. The family who lives there have been sleeping in tents off to my right here for three nights now. They have no idea when, if ever, they will be able to return to hair home. That is the situation for so many families all across this region right now. So painful to see some of those images and to understand what really happened to so many of their homes and their loved ones. Raf sanchez, thank you. Joining us with mill lall lali, a San Francisco Restaurant Owner who has family in marrakech. And Caroline Holt from the International Federation of the red cross and red crescent society. Murad, thank you forgetting up to be part of this. I know its been a stressful few days for you. How is your family doing and what are they telling you about what happened . Thank you for having me. My family, thankfully, is very safe. They were not in the house when the quake happened. From my communications with them, the devastation is rampant. Everybody is affected. Everybody knows somebody who either lost some family members, some friends or lost a home. The situation is very dire, and i dont even think the horrible images that are shown on tv and on social media tell the real story of whats happening. In terms of human lives that are lost, the number is climbing. Officially its around 2,500 people who have lost their lives. I think at the end of the day, when you talk to people on the ground, they know for a fact there are people still buried under the rubble. People that used to make sounds are not making sounds anymore. So they cannot be declared officially dead until they are pulled out from under the rubble. So that number im expecting to climb. Ive been in contact with the Moroccan Embassy in washington, and theyre telling me the same thing. Ive been in contact with the State Department and im hearing stories that this numb bler climb significantly when everything is settled. We keep holding out hope as especially we see some of these videos of rescues that have taken place, and that work continues to try to reach people who may be drapd under the rubble. What goes through your mind when you see just how torn apart morocco is by this historic earthquake . For me its really hard to watch because i grew up in marrakech, im from marrakech. I know these neighborhoods that are shown on tv and on the screens all over the place. I can recognize the alleyways. The village that your reporter has spoken out i used to go there pretty much every couple months. I know what those homes meant to not just the people who lived in them, but also from a culture perspective. These are remote villages, remote communities. They have their own dialect. They dont even speak the moroccan dialect. Going there was like witnessing life from hundreds of years ago, and that was really special. These are not people connected to the world through the internet or wifi or iphone or ipads. They are people who live their live sustainably. They grow their own food, raise their own animals, they have their own schooling systems. Theyre very, very traditional in their ways. Im afraid most of it will be lost. At the least they will be displaced where they cant live the way they used to live any longer. We see the damage is so severe really throughout the areas impacted. But it does vary in some images. It appears like some buildings were reduced to dust. Whats your sense of why this earthquake was so, so devastating and so deadly . Well, you have to think about it from different perspective. When these homes and vees villages were put up hundreds of years ago, thinking about seismically retrofitting the buildings was not something on their minds. These are adobe buildings, buildings that are built to keep people from the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter. The walls are really think and made with clay and hay and materials that are not theyre heavy. When there is an earthquake like this, everything crumbles. Theres nothing that will keep the walls up, nothing that will keep the ceilings up. Morocco and especially marrakech has witnessed tremendous growth in tourism and people from other countries loving the country, falling in love with the country and they decided to come and move in and buy homes. The Construction Business just bloomed over the last 20 years. There were a lot of homes that were built rapidly to accommodate the demand. I think thats part of the problem. So its a doubleedged sword where the old homes crumbled because theyre old and the new homes crumbled because theyre not built in a way that is sustainable. Its all so sad to see. Thank you so much for taking the time. We wish you and your family all The Very Best in the recovery process. Appreciate you. Thank you for having me. Let me turn to caroline now. What is your reaction to what we just heard from m. Urad . Devastating. The images tell a thousand words. The bravery of the Search And Rescue teams, the emotional impact this is having on the families, we know that Search And Rescue window is only a limited one, and really its a race against time because the next two days really are the space in which we will find people alive under the rubble if they are still there. It is critically important that were able to reach those remote villages and get to those Atlas Mountains where the epicenter was. Also, as your reporter suggested, the devastation that will meet the Search And Rescue teams there is not necessarily known in its full extent at this point. So tell us about the work your organization is doing, and what is the biggest need as you understand it right now for the Hundreds And Thousands of people affected by this quake . Were working through our partner on the Ground T Moroccan Red Crescent who are working in close coordination with the government of morocco, the army, the Civil Defense service. The needs are clear. Search and rescue, critical to find the people still alive under the rubble, but also taking care of those that survived. There are many people with significant injuries be that head wounds or broken bones, and really triaging those people to identify the worst kaess, ensure they receive the medical support that they require, and then carrying out first aid in often makeshift medical facilities that are available to the local teams, certainly the moroccan red crescent to patch people up in the way we most effectively can. Mental health and psychosocial report is also a critical part of this because people will relive that trauma time and time again as those aftershocks are felt. For those that have survived, its food, its water and its shelter. Caroline holt, really appreciate the time. Thank you very much for joining us. Best of luck to all of those who are with your workization trying fast and furiously to make a difference on the ground. When were back in just 60 second, killer on the loose.
