Hello, good morning, thinks for joining us, here on the breakfast show. Irans barrage of drones and missiles was launched tonight. Irans first direct attack on israeli territory. But while iran says the attack is concluded, israel remains on high alert. Israels air Defense Systems brought down the vast majority of any incoming threat and no one was killed. It was an unprecedented attack and retaliation for a suspected israeli strike in the area that killed two uranian generals. Our middle east correspondent, Alastair Bungle begins our coverage. Reporter the drones arrived in israeli airspace at 2 00 in the morning, these were intercepts over jerusalem. The holy city was under attack and the skies above our life, with the trails of israels air defense system. The region had been on edge for days, but this was a bigger, far more dangerous retaliation than many expected. The u. S. Government seems to have warning that the attack was coming. President Biden Cut Short his weekend in delaware and flew back to the white house to be with his National Security team he was watching and monitoring events from the situation room, as the attacks unfolded. The Israeli Military want people to stay closer to bomb shelters as the nation braced. Dozens of Unmanned Aircraft were intercepted outside of the borders of the state of israel with the threats launched over 200. The idf does and will do everything that is required to protect the security of the citizens of the state of israel. Airspace was closed over jordan and iraq. Flights in the air headed for tel aviv were headed back. U. S. Embassy told its staff to take shelter and schools in israel have been ordered to close for the next two days. The Israeli Military says the vast majority of missiles were intercepted outside the border of israel, but the few that did fall within the country only caused minor damage. The u. S. President has condemned the attack and what he says, is the strongest possible terms. He spoke with israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu and reaffirmed the u. S. s commitments to the security of israel. Irans mission to the United Nations tweeted to say that the matter was concluded and the u. S. And israel were warned not to retaliate. The attacks were celebrated by Regime Supporters in tehran. They might be satisfied by the response that israel has no choice but to retaliate. This could, still, be just the beginning. And alastair joins us live, from jerusalem now. So, alastair, an unprecedented attack by iran directly on israeli soil. The question now is what israel will do next. Reporter yeah. It is. Iran, from its point of view, as i mentioned in my report is well, it is working on the basis that they have now relied retaliate into that attack that happened in damascus on the her eighth of april, and in their words, the retaliation has concluded. Israelis may not see it that way. Speaking to israelis, they dont trust the iranians, and so they remain on very high alert, either for further attacks from iran, or attacks through their proxies, from lebanon, syria, or yemen. No doubt in the top israeli political circles and military circles, another response from israel will be discussed, and it might be that they feel that such was the scale of the attack on israel last night they have no choice but to respond. I think they do, particularly, see the use of 120 Ballistic Missiles as being escalatory. However, the United States, their close ally, an ally that they have had differences with over recent weeks because of what was going on it in gaza, but an ally that stuck with them last night and helped defend the skies of israel, the United States will be urging calm. They do not want to be dragged into a bigger war. They do not want to see the region destabilized further, and so, i am sure they will be pressing israel not to do anything certainly in haste. Whether or not israels per minister will listen to the u. S. President , which he hasnt always done in recent weeks, we dont know. But this is a very, very dangerous situation for the middle east. If you thought things were tense here over recent months, it has just gone up quite a number of levels in the last few hours. Alastair, thank you very much indeed. So, u. S. President , joe biden, has said he will be convening g7 leaders to coordinate a diplomatic response to what he described as irans brazen attack. In a statement, the president said, earlier iran, and its proxies, operating out of yemen, syria, and iraq, launched an unprecedented air attack against Military Facilities in israel. I condemned these attacks in the strongest possible terms. I have spoken with Prime Minister, net yahoo, to reaffirm americas ironclad commitment to the security of israel. Tomorrow, i will convene my fellow g7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to irans brazen attack. Well, our International Affairs editor is here, dominic, and also our political correspondent, robert powell. But lets talk about the diplomacy going on behind the scenes. As we heard there, joe biden reiterating what he describes as u. S. s ironclad support for israel. What message will he be delivering behind the scenes . You will be delivering a message, urging restraint, as all israels allies have been, for a few weeks now, since israels attack on the iranian consulate in damascus that took everyone by surprise, including The Americans not told about the attack until israeli jets were in the air. So, i think the message statement saying is, they werent happy with that, because they regarded that as escalatory, and they knew they would be seeing some breach of international law, an attack on the sovereign territory of iran, that left iran with no alternative, but to retaliate. But they have been sing to israel, we have got your back, with this retaliation happens, whatever shape or form it is in we will help you, and clearly they did. Not just france and britain, but also it seems jordan, and a number of arab nations as well. We dont know the full details, but i think a lot of countries rallied around israel as these drugs increased. Missiles were coming in. So, in the sense, israelis, we have got your back, with the understanding that you try to strengthen, no one wants an escalation into an allout middle eastern war, which has been haunting the region, particularly by the attack from hamas, those Horrendous Massacres on october 7th, carried out by hamas, facing the biggest loss of jewish life, since the holocaust. So, i think the same message will be impressed on the israelis. We dont escalate things further, except that the iranians have had their when they have made their point, i think those are the words that joe biden used talking to the israeli per minister yesterday. So you have got to wait, but dont make matters worse, the question really for the israelis is, if you have been attacked by 350 missiles and drones, if britain was attacked by the number of projectiles by iran or any other country, would you accept that as drawing a line under an a fair yielded by The Other Side, i think that is the question. Israel has to work out, visit deterrence, the power of its deterrence, which it has been struggling to put back together since october 7th, will that be served by not doing anything further . So, i think the allies will be diplomatically saying to the israelis, we have got your back, but also saying we are going to punish israel for this in a number of ways. The g7 is meeting via videoconference call this afternoon. The Un Security Council will be meeting as well at some point today. So, there will be diplomatic punishment for this. You dont need to punish the israelis and the israel iranians further. The question is, to the israelis accept that . Or do they feel they have to retaliate further for their own reasons . So, a lot of folks on israels next move. Rob, in the meantime, what has the uk response been . You can response, in terms of language, has been one of condemnation of the attack. But also urging the escalation. So, i think that concern of escalation, and that urging of restraint is present there too. In terms of the practical response of the uk has made, it is still a little bit unclear. We know that there was direct involvement, some sort of involvement, even if it wasnt shooting down drones last night for raf jets. They havent yet said if the rf did actually engage in shootdown a rainy and drones are missiles. That is still unclear. We know that they have moved more jets under the decade old decadelong operation shade, as the mission to combat Islamic State dietitian iraq and syria. So complaints were in operation last night over iraq and syria, not over israel. The mod did say that these jets were authorized to shoot down a rainy and drones and missiles, if they needed to. So, uk involvement feels like it was more second order to the u. S. Involvement last night, this wasnt a joint u. S. Uk defense, Israeli Defense mission. It may prove that they have more of a support, but yes, the language of the diplomacy from the uk, Condemnation Standing with israel and its security, that message coming out as well. But i think, deep concern about where this could go now. Rob and dominic, thank you very much indeed. Just let you know, coming up at half past eight, joe phillips will be getting more reaction to last nights attack from both the government and labor. He will be speaking to the health secretary, victoria atkins, she was behind just a moment ago, and shadow secretary, evette cooper. That is coming up in the program just got it 30. 30. Lets to take a look now at the weather. Cooler, as a Risk Northwesterly replaces a mild southwesterly flow, however, temperatures will be close to average for april. We go live now to sydney and you spoke to australian mp, very good morning to us thank you very much for talking to us. A terrible attack yesterday on the Shopping Center in your constituency. First of all, your response. It is absolutely horrific, and my community is really devastated. You know . It is a devastated where the junction is a place that everybody comes to. It is the heart of shopping in the area. So my people are there every week. Is the first day of the school holidays, and you know, everyone in my Community Know somebody who was either there or should have been there, or is connected. Is a really tightknit community, this is incredibly shocking. Well, yeah, and how much more detail is now emerging, how much do we now know about the victims of this attack we are still the families choose when we release the details of the victims. But we know that we have had a number of victims now, details released, and they their number of locals, people from different backgrounds who are just going about their business. You know . A young mom who was tragically stabbed and whose daughter is still in the icu. So, those are emerging details, and we still have, i think up to 12 people who are being hospitalized, some of those in a critical condition. So, we are praying, i think collectively, that not more people suffer from these commands just really thinking of everybodys families right now. And how much is emerging about the attack from themselves, the questions being asked about how this came to happen . Look, i think questions are being asked, and you know, the attacker, we are still getting details about him. I think, for us, the reassuring part for the community is that it appears he acted alone. And that theres no future threat to the community, and i think that is the most important thing for people right now. You know, but i think people are very concerned about how its got to this place. He was known to the Mental Health community. So, concerns that, perhaps this was a Mental Health episode, but he was dealing with, and this is what has happened. So, details are still emerging, and i think everyone is just being told to, sort of, lets not jump to conclusions, lets piece by piece methodically understand what has happened, why, you know, get as much as we can to understand why he did this. And clearly an appalling loss of life, but a feeling too that things couldve been much worse if it hadnt been for the actions of one police officer. Absolutely. It was incredibly fast. The reaction, in terms of, from the time that he started, he has effective rampage the time he was shot by a brave, local police woman who i have met personally, and she is absolutely remarkable, and just singlehandedly went in there with no backup and absolutely save lives, and i think the other people are reflecting on right now that we have very strict laws in this country and i think we are very grateful for those on a day like today, because we know what might have happened if somebody like that person had access to firearms as well. You talked about your Community Being in shock. Give us an idea of how people are reacting to what has happened. Look, i spent most of the day at the junction, where there is a vigil of flowers been together. You know, we hundreds of people come and lay their wreaths today. We had the Prime Minister and premier and others.
