MSNBCW Deadline White House January 26, 2021

Importance of Coronavirus Relief alongside dr. Anthony fauci and francis collins, director of the National Institutes of health. That event coming as this new white house today is balancing action on a trio of crises gripping the nation. On the sixth day of his presidency, joe biden working to address Racial Injustice and the raging coronavirus pandemic as republicans in the senate seek to erase Donald Trumps role in inciting the insurrection at the capitol on january 6th. 45 republicans making clear today that they have no interest in weighing the facts in the president s latest impeachment trial. This time for literally inciting violence against them. Instead, they have revealed the depths of their political insecurity by essentially refusing to carry out their constitutional duty to serve as jurors. That news coming just last hour as the current president carries out a flurry of executive actions to address racial inequality. A stark contrast in itself, as the insurrectionist, as we know, include many white nationalists but the president and his administration harness the power of their bully pulpits to announce aggressive action against the raging and mutating coronavirus pandemic. That is as governors and local officials plead for more vaccine supply and Public Health officials warn that vaccinating the public is now a race against time. Later in the hour, an address to the nation from President Biden on the state of the pandemic with the country at a critical inflection point. White House Press Secretary jen psake said biden will provide clarity into how many more additional vaccine doses the administration will be able to distribute as his administration continues to sift through what was left for them by the last team. Distribution plan theyre calling worse than they ever imagined. According to the Washington Post, Bidens White House today is expected to tell the countrys governors theyll get desperately needed additional supply of vaccines starting next week. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will be here with us to discuss what hes learning from the federal government as the state of new york begins to run very low on vaccine supply. But the three crises converging on joe Bidens White House at this very hour is where we start today with some of our most favorite reporters and friends. National reporter with the Washington Post is back and joining us, msnbc medical contributor, dr. Kavita patel and my friend, msnbc contributor, Steve Schmidt, a former republican strategist, now cofounder of the lincoln project. Because it just happened, let me ask you about this Staggering Number of republicans who voted against even holding a trial in the senate for donald trump. Its not surprising. Look, right now when you look around the country, nicole, there are at least four or five republican state parties that are now q parties. They have been taken over fully by the qanon people. Matt gates has made clear that donald trump is the forever leader of the Republican Party and the America First movement and that America First movement has, just like the one that preceded it about that in this moment in time. And so that vote isnt surprising. Donald trump is in maralago. He is regrouping. Hes made his first endorsements. Hes opened up his former office. Well see what their next move is. But these republican senators will not be able to look away from what happened and what happened was incited to violence by the president of the United States, donald trump, that consisted of white supremacists, white nationalists, fascists, proud boys, extremist militias, violent and murderous thugs stormed the capitol of the United States. They bludgeoned to death a policeman. Six people were killed during that violent attack on the capitol of the United States, the American Flag was ripped down. The maga flag was raised in its place, raised over the American Flag. The floors of the senate and the house of representatives were desecrated. A constitutionally mandated function was interrupted on purpose on the basis of a big lie that those members like hawly and like cruz not only complicit but the fathers of. That incited mob pain, came for the purposes of denying the franchise apart. The millions of black voters who had decided to change course from the trump presidency. After that attack, seven senators, 140 house members voted in essence to throw out millions of black votes to install the loser of the election as the winner to make the loser the dictator and end the american republic. That was the consequence of that vote if it had succeeded. So no, this was weeks ago. Not years ago. There is no moving on from this. This is why corporate america, big company after big company, google today has said no more donations to you. The sedition caucus. And so what we see is a desire for fantasy, a desire for delusion, to turn away from the desecration of the capitol incited by the president , the Second Branch of government attacking the first. There will be accountability in this country. There will be justice in this country, and it wont just be for the incited. It will be for the inciters as well as this plays out. A disappointing vote but not surprising, but one much less grounded in reality than a fantasy that they believe wrongly that they can push away. And matt visor, the president showing more leg, if you will, with the poll last night saying basically the trial must happen. That there isnt unity, there isnt an opportunity for bipartisanship without it. Yeah, i think bidens answer was certainly interesting where hes addressing what he views as the need to move forward, but he was also indicating in that interview he does not think that the votes are there for a conviction for some of the reasons as steve just outlined. And i think for biden, hes ready to move past this impeachment trial. He sees the need for it, but he also is very focused on his own agenda. So i think theres some concern at the white house that they could get too bogged down, frankly, in talking about President Trump too much. He has a full plate, as weve seen just today. As you outlined kind of at the top, i mean, biden is addressing all sorts of crises simultaneously. Just today alone, hes talked with vladimir putin, taking on a much harder line than the prior president with the russian president. Hes done executive orders on racial equality. You saw the first female Vice President swearing in the first female treasury secretary. Theyre dealing with the coronavirus. Its just, on all fronts, dealing with these things and i do think that the impeachment trial is something that they dont want to be dragged into too much, so hes kept really an arms length as much as he can and thats why we have our first, like, little snippets from a brief pull aside that kaitlan had with the president yesterday. That is for congress to deal with. Thats where the trial will take place. There really isnt a role for biden, hes doing what he should be doing with handling the coronavirus pandemic but on the front pages of my hometown papers tabloid and a right leaning one at that, already sort of getting saddled with some of the blame when obviously, all the problems right now with vaccine supply are on the shoulders of the last administration but theres already a lot of pressure on thiS White House to the up the supply of vaccine to states. Obviously, new york state isnt obviously the one low on supply. Is that what were beginning to hear from biden specifically this hour . Yeah, i think well hear from biden this hour. Sort of about more with the vaccine supply that they have in the office as well as the plans going forward. You heard at the White House Briefing earlier today from jen psake, efforts to be in greater communication around the country about distributing that supply. One of the interesting things thats happened over the past couple of days is biden kind of starting to increase his goals. He came into office with a goal of 100 million vaccines within 100 days. An average of 1 million per day. Hes starting to talk and increase that to 1. 5 million. But theyre cautious about that in part because of the supply and a little bit counting their estimates of what their goals should be based on whether they think theres enough supply to up the number of vaccines in distributing them around different states. Dr. Patel, we usually talk to you wearing your physician hat. Im going to ask you to put on your policy hat and pick up some of these threads for me. The new cdc director was on fox news on sunday saying she did not know how much vaccine there was and i have to say too, i think before we chase the current news cycle and try to get to the bottom of what the Biden Administration is going to do about supply, we should put it in the frame that they inherited, which is Jared Kushner saying that the federal government would have no role. States were on their own. Let me play some of the sound to remind everyone sort of where we were seven days ago. The notion of the federal stockpile was supposed to be our stockpile. Not supposed to be state stockpiles they then use. We ensure states get the data they need from their local situations and then trying to fill it with the supplies weve given them. Were in very strong communication with the governors. Were going to be helping with testing. Theyre going to be doing the testing. Its got to be a localized thing and it really has been since ive been involved because i came in and federal government is supposed to do testing of parking lots in the middle of the certain state 2,000 miles away, thats ridiculous. But the testing has been so incredible. So just to be precise here, Jared Kushner was talking about ppe. Donald trump is talking about testing supplies. But these were the challenges at the time and the federal government, the white house under the previous management made abundantly clear it had no role in helping states. Just talk about what the effort is like to scale up the federal role and begin to be not just helping but providing. Its pulling back the black curtain the Trump Administration left and Biden Administration inherited. From a policy standpoint, down to understanding exactly what pfizer and moderna are shipping out and exactly where its received in the states and how much its allocated to longterm care facilities. A lot of whats happening around the country is vaccines are distributed to states and you can see theyre not all being used and even states dont exactly know where their own supply is going. From a federal kind of standpoint, they have to come in, assess exactly what the status currently is inheriting already the some 50 million doses have been kind of distributed by both manufacturers and then trying to understand, manufacturing, these are complex vaccines to put together. So you cant just build a factory overnight. So theyre trying to work on where the feds can step in from a policy standpoint, more syringes to extract more vaccine out of the vial and then the allocation across the United States, you get into really hard problems to solve. New york is ready to get more, but we know that we need to get more to another state because they actually havent had that much in the first place and the allocation was inequitable and from there, you have states that are asking the feds for help in going even further and saying, look, weve got vaccine but we need warm bodies on the ground to help put the shots into arms. You heard jen mention tiberius, a third party large data company that had its own issues and its being asked to kind of operate. It had been on the contract to operate operation warp speed supply. So coming into that, you have to be able to do all things at the same time. Number one, navigate the supply. Number two, try to figure out how to ramp up supply in the event as dr. Walensky referred to several times that the two manufacturers we currently have dont have enough for the entire country and thats a fact. We hope more manufacturers will be authorized. Thats also a fact but we dont know when that will happen so those are all the kind of variables to think through. So going behind the curtain, you know President Biden made this his top priority and every office out on the phone with mayors, with governors, with their people with Public Health departments and literally trying to keep a sense of where are we in the country right now but then also, at the same time, literally trying how to meet the goal of 1. 5 million shots a day which doesnt seem hard but the steps to get there are not incredibly easy but this is what the force of the white house does. Gets the whole of government response we heard and unlike previously, every agency is working on this and if youre not working on it 24 7, then well find someone else who will work on it and thats exactly whats happening. Also, working with the office of management and budget, by the way, nicole, to find funding for the states while were arguing about a covid relief bill. Thats also whats happening behind the scenes. So its a lot but you know what, as we look at thousands of people dying a day, i know that president is up all night feeling that pressure. I know he is. You know, steve, just listening to dr. Patel talk and matt visor talking about that, im thinking about transitions. How dangerous a transition is for the country, National Security and threats from foreign adversaries but its clear listening to matt and dr. Patel, all the reporting, with the trump, if there were a white house parakeet, you wouldnt trust that the parakeet were in good health from the Trump White House to the biden white house. He was handing off the most elaborate high stakes detailed multilevel operational endeavor, probably in modern history. And then the notion that its a mess seems obvious in hindsight but slightly terrifying. Just talk about the task of coming in at this level in the midst of crisis and what you imagine ron clain is contending with. Not a mess but a catastrophe. Were in the middle of one of the great catastrophes in american history. And so this is the sixth day of the biden presidency, and so there is no president with the possible exception of lincoln at the edge of civil war who has been dealt a tougher hand than this president because like lincoln, and this stood until trump became president , lincoln followed the worst president in american history, and you talked about Jared Kushner. This is important to understand. Because we throw around words like evil loosely but there was a meeting in the white house. We worked in the white house and familiar with those rooms in the west wing of the white house. And there was power point and there were computers. There was coffee and bagels im sure and they made a deliberate and premeditative decision in the meeting led by Jared Kushner, the president s incompetent soninlaw who had no business being in the white house, no business of being in charge of anything in the white house but made a decision there would be no National Response because the virus in his estimation was going to do the damage in the blue states. And that would hurt the president s enemies and that zero sum thinking that would therefore be good for trump. Because of that decision, lets think about it. Was that an evil decision . That was an evil decision. If its not an evil decision, what else could you possibly call it . Was not just an incompetent decision. It was purposeful and premeditated. It is the amorality. It is the incompetence. It is the staggering malice that in the middle of this catastrophe, donald trump did everything he possibly could out of spite, out of his own failing campaign and bruised ego to make it harder to fix the catastrophe trump had wrought. It will take more time than it otherwise would have taken. But we have very, very competent and able people back at the helm of government who know exactly what theyre doing. The president has communicated clearly and honesty. Hes talked about the difficulties. Hes talked about the stakes and the challenges we have to unify as a country to fix. Its not a mess, its a catastrophe, will be the name of whatever tshirt or ice cream flavor im asked to design in my life. Thank you so much for starting us off this hour on another remarkable day. When we come back, as weve discussed, the senators are sworn in and preparing to hear the case against former President Trump for incitement of an insurrection that led to the deadly riot on the capitol. Can republicans successfully pretend that day never happened . That appears to be their plan. Fresh off his call with the Biden Administration, new york governor Governor Cuomo will join us on how he plans to up the supply of Vaccines Available to citizens of his state.
