Find the right balance between addressing the legitimate fears that people have and encouraging and incentivizing these heros. Health Workers Health incentivizing these workers. These workers going into the hot zone are heroes. We have to find ways to do that while ensuring the American People feel safe. Big debate breaking out over the weekend on how to handle Health Care Workers returning from affected parts of west africa. Its exploded across the tristate area with mayors threating governors. Nurses threatening lawsuits. Good morning, everyone. Its monday, october 27th. We have Mike Barnacle with us as well as chairman of deutsche incorporated Donny Deutsche and Steve Rattner. In washington, columnist for Bloomberg View, al hunt. We got a lot of tight races. Its going downtothewire. You really cant tell who is going to take control of the senate. Steve will give us some numbers. How was your weekend . Very good. Parents weekend at johns hopkins. How was it . She loved it. She made me take her to the aquarium to make up for when i didnt do it when she was 5. It was wonderful and the campus is beautiful. Thats fantastic. Really fun. And you . I sat at home alone and stared at the wall by myself. Come on, did you not. Another sad, pathetic weekend. Donny, tell me what do you think . Are you on de blasios side or christie and cuomos side im on cuomos new side,
revised side. Which is what . A moderate version. These are heroes. They cant be penalized. They are heroes. Having also said that if somebody chooses to risk their life and i salute them and other people back home have not chosen they need to be safeguard. Theres hysteria here. Theres hysteria on both sides. Theres a lot of dumb liberals, this is their chance to feel smart one time so they will speak out against any moderate measures. Joe, thats not fair. Weve seen it on tv, on the twitter feed, editorial pages, a lot of stupid liberals and this is their one chance to feel like they are morally superior and somehow i mean they are not because they are really stupid. So any measure whatsoever to protect Public Health, they love to scream about hysteria and it makes them feel good. And it really clogs up the debate so we cant take a reasoned approach to salute heroes while protecting people from going to Bowling Alleys, putting on sweating shoes. If you dont think 99. 8 of americans dont agree with me youre disconnected from 99. 8 of americans. I believe people who go there how is that that was a little fierce. Its true, because so many stupid people in the past three weeks be nice about it. This moderate who tends to be more conservative as he gets older believes there has to be some protocol for a 21 day, i hate the word are quarantine but kind of, even if its a daily check up where people have to come in, you choose your individual freedom to go over
and help people. Let other people make their choices to not, in effect steve, there does as a corporate leader if you were having to set something up like this, you would take a reasoned middle ground approach. A lot of people think cuomo and christie were playing for the cheap seats because elections are coming up. There has to be a middle ground here. I saw the pictures of the tent that this nurse was forced to stay in, which would strike, again, 95 of americans as deeply offensive. This is not how you treat heroes that go to west africa. This is not. There has to be a middle ground here. We have to be reasonable enough. So the question really is whether to donnys point where cuomo has found a balance or not. We all agree requiring every Single Person coming back to be stuck at some unheated tent or
equally unpleasant quarantine facility is not fair to them, wont work an you have thousands of military people coming back from their service and its not going to work. And will this home quarantine be a fair balance. I think its a pretty fair balance. I saw that tent, that took me back. No, it did. To this weekend. No when Steve Rattner invited me up to his yeah the tent, the estate, the tent when he invited me to Marthas Vineyard, he said stay in your guest house. I said thats a nice guest house. He put me in a tent. It was cold all weekend. It was at the gate. Not up on the property. We wanted to make sure there wasnt going to be a return visit. All right. Lets set the scene here. Lets set the scene. Mike, what do you think . Its interesting the near hysteria on both sides of this
argument. When you look at what is happening you have to ask yourself first of all who are the people returning. What do they do for a living . They are professional Health Care Workers. They know more about what they have been dealing with than the people interviewing them when they come through airport turnstiles. So there has to be some balance here. I think youre pretty close to it, oddly enough. But it cant be that they are immediately quarantined. I cannot believe that. On the flip side cant have the freedom to just go into a Bowling Alley and put shoes on. Exactly. I understand the hysteria. I understand the concerns. But if you watched dr. Anthony fauci who doesnt have a dog in the fight, the chances of anybody catching ebola, his words, from dr. Spencer were virtually nil. Less than nil. Because he wasnt symptomatic at all. You can catch it just from touching somebody. Heres the problem, steve. With these Health Care Officials, under stating the danger for the past nine months. I agree with that. I dont believe him. Its not that i think hes lying. I dont believe that he knows completely. We have doctors and nurses that have been there, that have gotten ebola, that have come back and say i still have no clue how i got there. I did everything right. I keep going back to dr. Brantley who testified before congress saying, we did everything right, we prepared for a month, we followed every single protocol i still have no idea. You talk to nurses in spain, we followed everything they told us to do. Theres something well learn about, maybe in a year, maybe in five years. They will figure out this transmitted in a way that dr. Anthony fauci and everybody else had no idea how it transmitted. Im with you all of that really seems to be happening on the tail end when they are at 103, when they are throwing up, when they have diarrhea, when its exploding, but they dont know how. Really, do we want doctors within the 21 daytime period to be going to chelsea piers and playing basketball and running and sweating and coughing and wheezing. There has to be a middle ground. There was a piece that touched on this were a nation of cowards. Every time i run into somebody, im afraid of ebola. Shut up. Are you not getting yes this you know why they are afraid. Donny, you know why they are . They cant trust their leaders to handle things. I think they are also cowards. Americans have been so let down not just by this president. Hes let americans down horribly. Lets go back through impeachment in 99, 2000 recount, 2001 missed intel on september 11. Stock market crash. Enron. 2003 flawed intelligence into iraq. 2004, abu ghraib. Hurricane katrina. You can go year by year by year. Irs scandals. Bob woodward saying if he was a young reporter he would go to cincinnati because the irs scandal is so terrible. Americans have no reason to be anything but scared how their federal government responds to one crisis after another. We create our own individual mini everybody is so self absorbed that if something happens in dallas, oh, my god. By the way, that just came from Donny Deutsche, a man whose
chest hairs have their own instagram account. We have just now crossed theres a lack of trust. You dont force a woman to stay in a bubble against her will. Okay. So were going to leave it there and move on to polls. We crossed the rubicon with this discussion. Nbc news maris poll showing several republicans gaining grounds. Cory gardner has broken ahead of senator mark udall. Gardner leads 4645. Last month udall was ahead by six. In North Carolina, democrat senator kay hagan is tied with thom tillis. In kansas republican senator pat roberts appears to have come back into contention and independent greg orman led the
senator by ten points now orman is up by one. In Iowa Republican joni ernst is leading bruce bral lie 49 to 46 . And finally arkansas where Republican Congressman tom cotton is ahead of senator pryor, 45 to 43. These races are so close with one week to go. Al hunt, ive never seen anything like this before. You look at the real estates. There were some republicans trying to talk about how everything was breaking their way. Most things might be. But let me tell you something. When youre within the margin of error you dont know what will happen the last week. The socalled october surprise, whatever it might be pro or continue for either party. Kansas, pat roberts still down by one. Iowa looks like joni ernst is making slight moments still
within the margin of error. Arkansas plus two by cotton but he was up by five before. Very, very tight. Im curious. Youve done a lot of work in iowa. Does the endorsement by the Des Moines Register, a lot of endorsements dont matter,er with talked about this before, does the iowa race, does the Des Moines Register make a difference . I dont think it makes much difference because i dont think endorsements in general matter. I think what hurt her a little was her refusal to go talk to the Editorial Board of that paper and two or three other papers. Shes hiding a bit. That probably hurts. I dont think the endorsement per se means much. All of these races are within a margin of error. We do a poll we say plus or minus of 2 or 3 . When it comes out we feel its etched in stone. All these races are toss ups and
they were toss ups ten days ago. The only race i thought was competitive a week ago that now seems put away is south dakota. Theres still ten senate races that could go either way. What about louisiana . Mary is going to win by 6 1 2 points. Looks like that race is more of an uphill battle for her than we first thought. She face as runoff a month later and thats going to be challenging. Im very surprised mika im hearing a lot of insiders talking it might be a very good republican year but one race they were surprised by is georgia and that nunn is turning out to be a much better campaigner than people thought at the beginning and she may even cross. She may do that. I heard that. I heard this is big for republicans. In 2010 there was a seven. Point difference as far as americans wanted to see a Republican Congress than democrat and now its 11 points. Another point, if this week continues and its an ebola
story which basically is one more story our leaders not performing, one more story that goes barack obama versus what the democrats want to talk about. If theres another isis break. If this news cycle in the next five, six days, i think the republicans sweep, it will be dependent because then its a story no matter how you like it on the indictment on the current management. Say what you will about barack obama. Ill say yesterday the white house coming out and telling Chris Christie and cuomo to back down, politically courageous thing to do for a president of the United States one week away on, for the reasons that donny said right there. Whether i agree with what he said or not, it was a courageous thing for him to do and im sure there are democrats running for office all over america when they heard that yesterday, did he have to say that right now. But he said it. Lets go New Hampshire where Elizabeth Warren finds herself in familiar territory,
campaigning against scott brown the massachusetts senator who defeated senator brown in 2012. Rallied democrats in favor of incumbent New Hampshire senator jean shaheen. It did not cross my mind [ laughter ] that after beating scott brown that what he would do is he would pack up his pick up truck and move to his Vacation Home in New Hampshire to become the candidate to try to run against jean shaheen. You can pack up your pickup truck. But i dont care how fast you drive it, youre not going to out run your voting record in the United States senate. Mika, i wont have you say it. No, dont. One person expressed skepticism about her ability to lead the country but another
said she may be the democratic nominee. It wasnt me. If she ran she would have a lot of support. She would be formidable. Shes passionate. She has conviction. She knows what she wants to do. This this strain in the Democratic Party thats reis your against as reflect by bill de blasio election thats to see the Democratic Party to become more progressive. Theres a place for her in the fight. Hillary clinton would be the perfect candidate for her to go up against. The perfect. An establishment candidate with really close ties to wall street who has supported a lot of wars. So lets talk about New Hampshire, mike. Mark halperin showed me an email from a democratic friend up there this weekend who said a lot of people are Walking Around here angry. They dont love scott brown but it feels a lot like 2009 when he
won. A lot of angry people want to be able to voice their displeasure and hes the only vehicle they got on the ballot. Thats true. Governor shaheen thats not to knock scott brown thats just to say this is, at least, up, there a lot of reporters are telling me its an antivote against barack obama, not even jean shaheen. Joe, you can not escape or avoid that fact on the ground in New Hampshire. Senator shaheen is carrying an enormous burden in the president s unpopularity, a huge burden. This is a ground game election. Its very close right now. It will depend who can get the vote out the best and the suspicion is that governor shaheen, former governor shaheen, senator shaheen now will be able to get the vote out better than scott brown will be able to get his vote out because shes been up there her entire life he hasnt. But the anger is palpable. Anger might be the wrong word. Its a combination of its like the rest of the country. I was in minnesota last week. The anger mixed with the anxiety in this country is palpable. And the feeling that people have been let down and, you know what . It hurts to be let down when you really, really fall in love. I actually said after barack obama got elected in 2008, i didnt vote for him but my god if this guy fails theres going to be so many people going to crash hard because they put so much hope. Unrealistic hope which i said from the very beginning. I thought it was pure lunacy how people thought this guy who didnt know how washington worked was going to be able to as he said make the waters recede and all the crazy stuff he was saying and people just ate it all up. And the let down has been so dramatic and so harsh. This isnt even a democratic
problem. I was worried at the time, right after the election that this was a problem, a bigger problem in our country so many people got in the process and so excited about this guy who clearly wasnt up to the task of doing the things he promised to do. Well talk more about this coming up. We got something really exciting. Jeb bush is going to run. Bush versus clinton 25 years later. Oh, my god wouldnt that be exciting. Everybody in his family wants him to run except his mom. Wait we knew that. Still ahead on morning joe, why is it a huge story. We reported this. Whats the story . The son goes on television on sunday and says dad will probably run. We know this already he might run. And that the mom doesnt want him to. Hes probably going to run. Actor bill paxton will be
here. Former adviser to president Obama David Axelrod joins us in our 7 00 hour. You behave. Plus senators jeff flake and Martin Heinrich go to extreme measures to see if bipartisanship goes. And how the irs can seize your bank account even if no crime is committed. The irs comes in, they dont even commit a crime and have like all their cash seized. Biggest story in the paper yesterday. Wasnt that unbelievable . What is wrong with the irs . I was shocked. I was too. Oh, my god. The most amazing thing about the ford fusion isnt the way it looks. The most amazing thing . Is the way it sees. With blind spot technology, a lanekeeping system and a standard rearview camera, the fusion is ready for whatever comes your way. Go prepared. Go further.
