MSNBCW Morning Joe July 26, 2016 10:00:00

Hmm. Karla ortiz. Thats going to do it for me on way too early. Ill be back on morning joe a bit later this morning. But first joe and mika pick up the coverage live from philadelphia, right now. God, you have given us wisdom. Now give us courage for the facing of this hour. Hillary clinton and tim kaine want to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the people at the top. Im reminded today of all the important fights of the past 50 years. I have privilege to represent teachers and first responders, veterans and college students. She was in massachusetts going door to door collecting the stories of children with disabilities. Unity unity Hillary Hillary can he just say to the bernie or bust people, youre being ridiculous. That kind of turned the page that moment right there. Good morning, everyone. Its july 26th. Wow. Live in philadelphia on the second just the second day of the Democratic National convention. I dont even know where to begin. Me and willie have columnist and contributor Mike Barnicle. Mark halperin and msnbc political analyst and university of Michigan School of Public Policy former democratic congressman harold ford, jr. They booed the prayer, they booed everyone early on. Really rough start. Saw tom brokaw talking about this, Mike Barnicle, go ahead and fire it if you will. He said it reminded him maybe of 1972, the chaos early on this afternoon. Chuck todd said it was like nothing he had ever seen. It was just really out of control early on. 72 in miami. I remember that distinctly. That was back in the drinking days. It was a raucous convention at the beginning, very much like last night. I have to say two things about last night. One, theres a certain sense of admiration have you to have. They booed the prayer. The Bernie Sanders people. They went way over the line at one point during the night. But last night will be remember forever because of the first lady of the United States of america. Absolutely. She sort of chuckled when you heard Sarah Silverman sound bite. Coming from a comedian, because she had been a very strong bernie supporter all throughout this campaign. She was basically saying, guys, ive turned the page. Look at the alternative. Shell fight for us. Shell never be bernie. She took a serious turn. We have bernie supporters voting for hillary. Its one of those great moments in Convention History that Sarah Silverman wouldnt have had that moment if wall m simon had been ready to come on sage. He wasnt ready to come on stage. I guess he was tuning up the final string. That gave Sarah Silverman this wonderful moment. It was a wonderful moment. Again, ive been watching so many of these speeches over the past, everybody screaming and yelling, acting like they dont have a microphone in front of them. It just drives me crazy. Suddenly you get a pro, somebody who is not a politician, somebody who hasnt been in elected office before, somebody like Michelle Obama who actually schools all the politician and says this is how youre supposed to deliver a moving speech at a convention. Michelle obama, extraordinary last night. One of the best speeches ive seen at a convention. It fused the personal with a political for a purpose. She talked about her home life to try to make the home life to make the point that Hillary Clinton should be the next president. Some of the other speeches were solid. Bernie sanders and Elizabeth Warren came after her and she was a very tough act to follow. Very tough act to follow. Bernie, though, of course, had just a massive reception. He had a good night as well. Overall a decent night for democrats fl i think mikes point early on not having seen anything like this was real. I was on the show early in the evening and it was clear from the first couple of speakers it was going to go really bad. I thought overall the enthusiasm channeled to the right way. If this is the first night. Tonight will be a better night. We get ready for tim kaine and Hillary Clinton. Lets get through the day. It started out a bit raucous as we mentioned on opening day of the Democratic Convention when the message of unity overcome by the primary reopened by those leaked party emails showing favoritism leading to rebellion around the city. The disruptions began over breakfast, spilled into the street and flooded the Convention Hall. It started after 9 00 a. M. When ousted dnc chairwoman Debbie Wasserman schultz attempted to speak at the breakfast and was shouted down by Bernie Sanders supporters. Its so wonderful to be able to be here with my home state. All right, everybody, now, settle down. Everybody settle down, please. We must under president Hillary Clinton make sure we must under president Hillary Clinton make sure that our economy works for everyone. She was insisting im not sure why she did that. Why did she insist gaveling in the convention. We said yesterday morning, we could save her trouble, not to do it. I can save people to do it. Listen, she shouldnt have done that. She was insisting gaveling a convention. Shes in an alternative political reality. Its unbelievable, mike. She goes to this thing at 9 00 and shes got to know. But how many times have you, joe, and how many times has everyone in this room seen an example where someones ego stands in front of common sense. Here ego was so involved in who she is that she didnt recognize the reality around her. I think its one of the more extreme examples, mark halperin. Ive known debbie for a long time. Im not saying that to be critical of debbie, the person. But debbie, the political figure, has been clueless through the entire process about how people feel about her and whats in the best interest of the candidate she claims to support. There have been people in the white house and people that wanted her for a long time and it took this colossal controversy to get her to go. You think about the way they targeted, to have the chair forced out on the eve of the convention. Have not only her being booed but Bernie Sanders being booed. The Convention Starts with booing. At the end of the night, thanks to Michelle Obama and other speakers, they were able to turn around. The first half of the day, if it ended like that would be the worst first day of the convention weve ever seen. It ended fine. It was a little rocky at the start. You mentioned sanders being booed. Attempted to quell his supporters. Despite the fact that our people were a minority on the platform committee, we came out of that committee with by far the most platform ever written in the history of the Democratic Party. Immediately, right now, we have got to defeat donald trump. We have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. Brothers and sisters, this is this is the real world that we live in. Bernie sanders. Sanders he was standing up there in front of people Bernie Sanders, to his credit, has been saying the same thing for 40 to 50 years. He lit the match that ignited that fever that sweat across the country. As i said, its admiral the loyalty towards Bernie Sanders. Hes got to put this out. In november, the people who follow Bernie Sanders are going to have a couple of choices, either stay home, either vote for donald trump, reluctantly, holding their nose, however they might feel about it, vote for Hillary Clinton. He did that in his speech, made a clear case for Hillary Clinton. The truth is, the loud voices, shouting down Debbie Wasserman schultz and Bernie Sanders yesterday, polling shows that Something Like between 80 and 90 of Bernie Sanders supporters say they are going to vote for Hillary Clinton. Were seeing the loudest voices in philadelphia but most Bernie Sanders supporters will go for hillary. During the address he acknowledged his disappointment in the primary, hit on many topics in his stump speech over the last year, except the part about Hillary Clinton being president. This election is about which candidate understands the real problems facing this cub and has offered real solutions. Not just fear mongering, not just name calling and divisiveness. We need leadership in this country which will improve the lives of working families, the children, the elderly, the sick and the poor. We need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger. By these measures any objective observer will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States. As willie just mentioned, a new prew Research Found 90 of those that supported Bernie Sanders in the primary now back Hillary Clinton in the election over trump. Still, it was an emotional night for Bernie Sanders supporters. Some were brought to tears. Passed out and reprinted in team hillary font in a show of solidarity. Here is what Vice President ial candidate mike pence said last night about disaffected sanders supporters. To really find themselves shut out, to look at a ticket that doesnt give voice to what obviously millions of americans who align themselves with Bernie Sanders message in their party and in their ticket i think is frustrating to them and i understand that. Again, thats their party and they can cy if they want to as the songwriter says. Its hard to imagine anybody in the room crying voting for mr. Trump or mr. Pence and i give governor pence great credit for trying but its not going to happen. At the end of the day if you look at trumps message, you look at Bernie Sanders message, Bernie Sanders is closer to Hillary Clintons message. It may take 45, 50 days but i feel confident they will come around. I dont know if you feel the same way. I spent a lot of time with sanders delegates. As willie said, these are hard core supporters. Not surprised they would be the most reluctant to change their posture for her. A lot said booing because the whole program was geared toward the notion Hillary Clinton is our nominee. Shes not our nominee yet. I think she is. But shes not been nominated formally. A lot of them want form lets cast our vote. I think a lot of people in that room will fall in love. Willie, what do you think . By the end of the night, do we have the Bernie Sanders speech or do we really have the first ladys speech to point to to say this is the moment the Democratic Party came together as one to fight again trump. I think history will remember first ladys speech as one of the greatest in history at conventions, in the pantheon of great speeches. But Bernie Sanders for the room. Chaos, Debbie Wasserman schultz, Bernie Sanders booed. The room, the prayer was booed. Sarah silvermans moment started to turn it. When the first lady walked in, the room got quiet. Lets listen to a little bit of the first ladys speech. I will never forgot that winter moment, 7 and 10 years old pile into black suvs with all those big men with guns. I saw their little faces pressed up against the window. At that moment, i realized that our time in the white house would form the foundation for who they would become. How well we managed this experience could truly make or break them. How we urge them to ignore those who questioned their fathers citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you dont stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high. That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to the stage tonight. The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation but kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And i watched my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. So dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth. Well, there you go. [ applause ] you dont have to make America Great again, america is great. That is something that when Michelle Obama says that, she connects not just with democrats, not just with liberals, but with a lot of republicans and a lot of independents that have been saying that for a very long time. America is great. And that speech, by the way, such a moving speech. This network, a programming note, this network is going to be playing parts of that speech again four years from now at the next Republican Convention. I was very moved by it. I thought were talking about the pantheon of great speeches. We can go to ted kennedys speech in 1980 against jimmy carter. The speech it reminds me of the most is Barack Obamas 2004 speech in boston, the United States of america speech. Theres not a red state america, theres not a blue state of america, theres a United States of america. Extraordinary. And thats the message to my republican brothers and sisters that are campaigning this fall and wondering what you need to do, you need to follow that message, because people are scared. People are worried. But they still are proud of their country. As Mike Barnicle always says, thats what they have got. They have got this country, and its the greatest country in the world. Think about day one now. I thought this would happen. I really felt like, first of all, democrats know how to put on a convention. It was interesting that very rocky start. These speeches, that speech, now think about day one of the Republican Convention. Say no more. Charles in charge. We were all talking about this last week, that the democrats were going to steamroll the republicans because they were going to have one star after another star after another star. Willie, its like zeppelin in 71 followed by, you know, the Rolling Stones in 72 followed by Peter Frampton in 76. They have the stars lined up one after another after another. Last week we had scott baio followed by an underwear model, followed by a soap opera star. Followed by a plagiarized speech. Michelle obamas words. On and on, ted cruz, followed by ucf fighter, whomever. It was bizarre. Who do we have this week . More stars coming on stage. Compare speech of second place finisher. Youve got ted cruz up there refusing to endorse the nominee, getting booed on stage. Last night you have Bernie Sanders not stoking the flames of people hesitant to support the nominee but putting them down and making the case for Hillary Clinton. Michelle obama talking about living in a home slaves built and her children, parallel that story and sense of wonder to how great this country is and what hurdles we can overcome to, well, donald trump spent five minutes with me on the phone. These stories at the Republican National convention were a joke. They werent real. They werent personal. They didnt have a sense of history or connection with this country. They were like this sort of whitewash. I know they were trying to personalize donald trump but listen to Michelle Obamas speech and tell me what feels personal. You hit on what i think is the key of the greatness of her speech, how her speech will resonate. Ive seen a lot of great speeches at conventions, mario cuomo, 1984, ted kennedy, 1980, barack obama in 2004. Bill clinton in 2012. I have never seen a speech, given the presentation from a nonpolitician, the first lady. From the heart. The presentation, the content of the speech from the beginning about watching her children go off to school. Chilling. The speech was about our children. The speech was about us more than it was about politics. It really was. I draw my attention to republicans, see me with clinched fist up in the air about Michelle Obamas speech to say, i dont know Michelle Obamawould appreciate what im about to say, but her optimism a
