MSNBCW MSNBC - Democratic National Convention July 26, 2016

Going to just get cut at some point in the evening. Knowing that and knowing all floor reporters should wear flats, male and female, weve assembled them all. So halle jackson, start us off. Its the road warriors gang coming to you from the floor, brian, hi, senator franken. Hi. Thanks for joining the team. Were talking about minnesota corn beef. His mom is from my hometown. A jewish suburb. Reporter we were talking about Sarah Silverman during the commercial break also. What did you make of that moment . She had that bernie or bust comment. Well, you know, the latest polls ive seen, 90 of bernie supporters are for hillary. This is a little earlier in the night before michele and before bernie. [ inaudible ] youre an old pro. Reporter [ inaudible ]. Thats right. Reporter youre funny on the floor all the time, senator. The campaign asked me to be funny, to kind of do oh, okay. Really . On this you got to eat the mic here . They asked me to be to heap scorn and ridicule on trump with comedy. I said ill do anything for hillary, even be funny. Reporter what was it like back there with Sarah Silverman with a fellow comedian . It was fun. It was fun. We worked it out very quickly. At one point when i was going to let her do her speech, she said get out of my frame. Then i realized i wont get out of your frame until she told me. Reporter but she had the moment when she said to the bernie and bust people youre being ridiculous. Where are we with Democratic Unity . As i said, 90 of bernie supporters now are going to vote for hillary. This was early you know, there are people who worked very passionately, you can see that if you cut to them on the floor, there were people crying during bernies speech. They feel very passionate about that. I can understand that. But i think by the time we leave here, well be a very, very united party. Reporter can you ask you about the that young lady, she was going to vote for what state was she from . California. A swing state. Im not worried about her. Bernie made the case tonight, he made the case that Hillary Clinton has been fighting for the same stuff that hes been fighting for all her life, and he made the case about the Supreme Court and he made the case about just the values of bringing people together instead of dividing people, which is what trump did all last week. And he said that hes going to do everything he can to make sure that hillary is elected and hes very powerful guy and doing that he will reporter andrea . Your caucus for months and months has been so heavily Bernie Sanders. How much pushback are you getting . How hostile is it . They love you there so well, thank you. You always were one of the great political reporter Hillary Clinton is not at all popular with the majority of your no, thats not true. It was pretty interesting because when i went to the 8th district, thats where duluth is, to the 8th district convention, i had a bernie supporter, a woman come up to me and she goes, i owe you an apology. I sent you a mean tweet. Now, this is very minnesota. It was like you dont have to apologize. She goes, no, no, i sent you a mean tweet. So i got no pushback there and then i went to the Minnesota Convention and, again, nothing. Now, minnesota, there is such a thing called minnesota nice. Reporter senator, can i ask you to be a little minnesota not nice and grade Bernie Sanders on his snl appearances, one to ten . I did not see bernies snl appearance. Reporter what . I saw larry david as bernie. Reporter what did you think of his performance . I told larry, i said you had to do nothing. I said like when tina fey did sara palin, she had to get that more midwestern accent, she had to do stuff. I said, larry, you had to do nothing, just be a cranky jew, which is what larry is, hes 70, hes from brooklyn. Did you have trump material that didnt make it to the podium tonight . I had five minute and i think i did a wellcrafted piece. Dont you think . Im asking you, what do you think . Well crafted. And do you think it got a lot of laughs . Reporter it got a lot of laughs. How did Hillary Clinton do playing val the bartender . I thought she did great. Reporter do you know donald trump . Have you met donald trump . I have never met him. Ive been in the same room with him but for some reason i havent struck up a conversation. Reporter what would you say to him . I probably would avoid talking to him. I wouldnt go up to him. I just wouldnt. I have some bad feelings about him. I think what hes been doing this whole campaign has been reprehensible, and the way hes dividing people by religion and, you know, lets remember that he was a birther, like he was like the birther for a while. All that stuff is disgusting. Reporter i wonder what he would say if he came up to you, i mean, hes someone who engages his critics, even tonight he was tweeting about lelizabeth warre, for months, donald trump has been trying to appeal to Bernie Sanders supporters. He said Bernie Sanders has abandoned his revolution. And i wonder if you think he would appeal to that. I havent heard one Bernie Sanders supporter say they would vote for trump. Reporter here tonight i also have not seen one bernie supporter say that. Its the reverse. Its been people who have been saying things like i want you to see this newspaper story that shows that Hillary Clinton cant be donald trump and Bernie Sanders can and the most important thing is beating donald trump but there were plenty of people, fine, point conceded on the fact that california is likely to remain blue. But there was a lot of blue. Theyre feeling betrayed by Elizabeth Warren, theyre chanting Goldman Sachs when Elizabeth Warren was on the stage. Reporter do you think there is something more that Hillary Clinton needs to do to attract these disaffected bernie supporters over the next few days . I think she has to continue to make the case what the difference between the world that has a President Trump and a world that has a president clinton and those are starkly different. I mean, now as a senator, ive seen the presidency somewhat closer up than i did when i was a comedian. And, you know, like the trust issue, elizabeth said something today, she put a litany what you need from the president and she said well informed. You know, the president has to make decisions and youve seen this, has to make decisions that you didnt count on making a decision yesterday about. That means you have to be steeped in everything. And that means you have to work every day of your life to stay on top of everything. And donald trump is incapable of that. He has no interest in anything i think other than himself. Michelle obamas speech was for many people here on the floor the highlight. It was a beautiful speech. Shes an elegant, beautiful, wonderful woman. Dont know if well be hearing it at a Republican Convention sometime down the road, but i felt that it was informed or inspired and you know that during the 08 campaign, there was no [ inaudible ]. I think it was really informed by the Birther Movement and when she talked about her children [ inaudible ]. That was powerful. She spoke very powerfully about the birther stuff. And that was sort of trumps introduction to the Republican Party, wasnt it . I mean, that was like that was his entree in. I dont think you were born in the united states. And remember all the stuff that i sent people to hawaii and they found a lot of stuff . And he didnt send anybody there and they found nothing. I mean, he is, you know, a liar all the time. You know, he saw thousands of muslims cheering when the World Trade Center that didnt happen. Reporter facts dont seem to matter in this campaign. [ inaudible ]. I think they still matter. I still think at the end of the day they will still matter. And, you know, i would challenge you, all of you, to make them matter. To repeat them when there are lies. I would say that the media i think, you know, i used to write quaint books and i do think people think, oh, you know, wow there used to be books about when people lied but now no one cares. You guys have kind of a job to do. Reporter its a fair challenge. Reporter i hate to cut you off. Give us your best road trip story. Whats the craziest place youve been . I actually just had three weeks ago one of the greatest experiences of my life at the High School Graduation in wilmer, minnesota. Minnesota is a turkey largest turkey producer in the country and wilmer is kind of at the center of that and the population there, the graduating class was 60 white, 25 latino id say, 50 somali, i was there to introduce the class speaker, who was chosen by the class, a somali girl. And it was the most beautiful thing ive ever seen. The valedictorian was a latino school. And the presideshe had been a s thats why i introduced her. It was this town, 250 kids graduating, the orchestra was great. 80 of kids are going to postsecondary education. You know what, it made me realize that day that we who serve in Public Office have to be worthy of the people that we serve. And i think Hillary Clinton understands that. Reporter senator, thank you for joining our road warriors here at the convention. You never know whats going to happen. You never know. Thank you, hallie. About three quarters of that sounded like it was delivered down a tube of bounty. We had one or two really strong microphones in that group. Not so much. Senator franken has not started lounge singing out of laguardia. We asked him to put the mic up close, you may have heard. The stalwart tonight has been hugh hewitt. Now, imagine, if you will, being hugh hewitt, youre, a, in new york; b, youre in a studio and; c, youre listening to an evening of democratic politics. Hugh for the 120 odd not that theyre odd, 120 or so stations that carry your broadcast tomorrow, what will your take be and as honestly as you can put it, what kind of night did you think the dems had . There were two nights. It was a disaster for the democrats, a giant vat of acid fell on the democrats this morning and Chuck Schumer recommended that at the end of the first days proceedings in philadelphia, said he was worried this morning. I think its done lasting damage because of the trust issue, but beginning with corey booker, who gave a very good speech and theyre rare, he was followed by one of those extremely rare shining speeches. The first ladys speech reminded me when her then senator husband took the stage at the fleetcenter in boston and put one down in the books and i think she did that tonight and gave some hope of change from the nave tiff theyve been stuck in. But basically like the republicans lost their first day in 2008 and 2012 to hurricanes, the democrats lost their first day to the wikileaks. Michelle obama gave it back to them, the first ladys sparkling speech revived them. I didnt think Elizabeth Warren did much for them. In fact, the one thing i was missing tonight is that they made no appeal to trump voters, in the way that trump made an appeal to bernie voters, there was nothing of the reach across the aisle. I watched it all. Im a sucker for this sufficient. I can watch democrat and republicans conventions on an endless loop and be interested in it, but i was surprised that they made no overt play for the center. Hugh, do you concur with your friends nicole and steve that tomorrow this starts to take a turn in tone and that may be necessary . It has to. I think that they really have to work on the wikileaks problem because the central problem with secretary clintons candidacy is nobody trusts her. Its a 68 negative rating. The wikileaks story reinforces that overarching narrative that people like Steve Schmidt have to spend years building around that opposition, you cant trust her, you cant trust her and dump out all of these despicable emails in the dnc that trade in religious bigotry and homophobia, all of stuff that you would think would be a parity of a republican email dump. So that was an inside rigged game, the word rigged if its a drinking game and the word rigged, everyone is drunk in whatever saidi istadium that wa it was a very bad day for the Clinton Campaign at large. Youve got to work on trust, trust, trust. Someone said you cant fix that. Maybe Chris Matthews said that. Theyve got to try. Hugh hewitt, who has been so patient with us in our fourth floor studio, thank you very much, hugh hewitt. Youre welcome. When we come back to independence mall, Chris Matthews and his guests when our coverage continues. And can you explain to me why you recommend synthetic over cedar . Super food . Is that a real thing . Its a great school, but is it the right the one for her . Is this really any better than the one you got last year . If we consolidate suppliers whats the savings there . So should we go with the 467 horsepower . Or is a 423 enough . Good question. You ask a lot of good questions. I think we should move you into our new fund. Ok. Sure. But are you asking enough about how your wealth is managed . Wealth management, at charles schwab. Words panera lives by. No artificial flavors, preservatives, sweeteners. No colors from artificial sources. 100 of our food will be clean by years end. Thats food as it should be. Using 60,000 points from my chase ink card i bought all the fruit. Veggies. Most beautiful hair ever, with our strongest prov formula ever. Strong is beautiful. Thats where it all began, Independence Hall right behind me. Im Chris Matthews here with a special late Night Edition of hardball in my hometown of philadelphia. Yay they never got a convention tonight. Highlighted by Michelle Obama and concluded by Bernie Sanders. It followed a contentious afternoon. Sanders texted his supporters at one point asking them as a personal courtesy not to engage in any kind of protest on the floor tonight but he was bood by his own supporters when he asked them to back clinton. And elect Hillary Clinton. [ crowd boos ] it was a rough afternoon. The heated drama of earlier today shows revolutions dont have mute buttons. Even sanders couldnt quiet the anger from his supporters this afternoon but when he spoke tonight, he called for a united front to take on donald trump and did so forcefully. We need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger not leadership which insults latinos and mexicans, insults muslims and women, africanamericans and veterans and seeks to divide us up. By these measures, any objective observer will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must be become the next president of the united states. Weve got all the highlights for you tonight. That was Bernie Sanders of course concluding the evening, including a crowd pleasing speech tonight by progressive leader lElizabeth Warren. It was a hell of a night. Michelle obama gave an emotional endorsement of Hillary Clinton. I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And i watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn, and because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. Only one word for the first lady tonight, wow. Also coming tonight, a peek of my hometown of philadelphia with a look at one of the many things that make this city unique, the philly cheesesteak, not to be confused with a steak and cheese sandwich. Stick around. Ill tell you what i think is the line of the night. Joining me, the best of the business, joy reid, chris hayes, the host of all in, and howard fineman, my friend global editorial director, global of the huffington post. Howard, i just want you to talk about it because we were there, the four of us five of us were there. We were there for hours. Hours. I loved it. I loved tonight. I thought tonight had stuff and what i saw ill just start with my thought. When im watch beiing the first lady, a beautiful woman, were allowed to say that, a beautiful woman, charming as hell, elevated by educated, charm and everything else, stood up there and i do watch people and some youngish africanamerican by my standards africanamerican women, theyre crying, theyre so proud of what she is and so proud of how she raised her kids and i say that about some conservative right wing men in america, this family has done everything good, never does a thing wrong, the kids doesnt do anything wrong, theyre perfect. And all these rightwing people keep hating them and i say what do they want . What did you see that wasnt on tv . When i first arrived in the hall, you really got the sense of seeing bernie people circulating around that there was a kind of reluctance, a regret and resignation, in some case a defiancdefiance. What time of night . 4 00, 5 00. And you sort of saw a tremendous number of bernie people. Doesnt forget, hes got 45 of the delegates. Theyre all kind of trudging around, okay. So then when Michelle Obama spoke, two things happened. First of all, she made everybody proud in
