Chadwick boseman never discussed his diagnose publicly, but tonight the statement reveals he was diagnosed with stage iii colon cancer and battled the last four years as it progressed to stage iv. That battle has ended. Its really sad. Its heartbreaking. His opinion matters. Where the future was going. Reporter grief from englewood to hollywood, from the nfl to the mlb. The actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in the movie 42. Mmhmm. Has passed away. Reporter the dodgers, all of them, wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. It was the movie 42, and a role that would launch Chadwick Bosemans career. His portrayal of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in Major League Baseball. Boseman would go on to star as the god father of soul, james brown. I only represent innocent people, people accused because of their race. Thats my mission. I never touched that woman. Reporter as the first black Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. And Chadwick Boseman played the first black superhero in the megahit, black panther, one of the highest grossing films of all time. He created this character that really provoked the imagination of black people and others. The dean of social sciences at ucla, darnell hunt, says you cannot underestimate the impact of that movie. It was really about afro futurism, about possibility, about the highest aspirations of black people around the globe. Boseman was a Howard University graduate and classically trained in drama at oxford. He was an actor and he was an activist. Dreams still lives. And my dream is that our youth can reach their full line of potential without the threat of gun violence. Reporter bosemans alltooshort film career will not be forgotten because the roles were memorable. And now we know they were filmed between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. This was the last time we saw the black panther, dressed in a suit in avengeravengers en but we will be able to keep Chadwick Boseman with us, a true fighter, on screen and off. So sad to hear of his loss. You remember seeing Chadwick Boseman right here on msnbc a little while ago. Yeah, that was back when the film marshall came out, in 2017. He sat down with our own joy reid to discuss how the theme of racism tackled in the theme compared to present day. You see how the north sort of hid its racism, and thats similar to what we experience today. Its different words. We live in a, you know, racefree society. Like, we think just because we had a black president that all thats done now. People look at the advancements that africanamericans have made and they think all of that is in the past. And theyre just witnessing, you know, some cream that came to the top, not, you know, the countless neighborhoods that have basically desert food situations and schools that are still not up to par. And so all of that is, you know, why this movie ranks true right now. Were going to have much more reaction to the death of boseman throughout the morning, including more of his 2018 speech at Howard University, where he went to school. It was an amazing speech. I listened to it again this morning, talking about being a student there and talking about the protests that were taking place on campus. And kind of makes you think, wow, many of those people who were listening to that then in 2018 are probably some of todays protesters who listened to chad bose paman back then. And probably stood up to start an action of their own, who listened to him back then. And a lot of people are saying he filmed all of these iconic roles and some of them very physically demanding roles while he was fighting colon cancer, but also, he remained so active with the community and furthering the message of, you know, the civic unrest in right to get to a better place, even towards the end of his life. And speaking of civic unrest, there were perhaps some of the students who came from Howard University who were out on the mall yesterday, on the nations capital, demanding change for the countrys criminal justice system. New generations of leaders speaking at the site where the reverend Martin Luther king jr. Called for reforms decades ago in his iconic i have a dream speech. Of course, the country marches in solidarity, coming at a time of nationwide unrest and ongoing protests over Police Shootings of unarmed black americans, black men. Nbcs jeff bennett has more. Reporter thousands of demonstrators lined the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and packed the National Mall to demand justice, 57 years to the day after dr. Martin luther king jr. Delivered his seminole i have dream speech at the march on washington. We didnt just come today to have a show. Demonstration without legislation. Will not lead the change. Reporter the reverend al sharpton organized the event, following the Police Killing of george floyd to channel the outrage into action. Activists calling for policing reform while demanding equal access to the ballot box and an end to systemic racism. Fridays march taking place during a summer of protest over Police Violence against black americans. The latest, 29yearold jacob blake, shot 27 at times in the back at close range by police in wisconsin. His father traveled to washington for the march. We havent moved too far in 60 years, because when oppression is oppression, it only allows you to move so far. Reporter that sentiment shared by others we talked to. I hate for my daughter to see on social media her father getting killed. As a black man, youve got to be so strong, so powerful. I cant show my tears. You know what im saying . Thats going to make me look weak. And if you show the tears, it gives them the power again. I have a biracial family and we have our first son is going to be born in a couple of months. And when he learns about everything thats happening now and he asks me, well, what did you do, i cant tell him i cant look my son in the eye and tell him, i sat and i scrolled twitter, you know . Its important for me that i show him, your dad was there, your dad showed up. Are you going to march . Definitely. Yeah . Yeah. How do you think youre going to feel . Ill probably break down and cry, to be honest with you. Americans are marching together, many for the first time, and were demanding real, lasting, structural change. Reporter after the speeches, the tens of thousands of demonstrators set off to the Martin Luther king jr. Memorial, while fighting to make his dream ring true. Jeff bennett, nbc news, washington. We appreciate jeff for that report, reporting for us from washington. Thanks, jeff. To decision 2020 and 66 days to the election. And fresh off the convention, President Trump is picking up where his 72minutelong acceptance speech left off, slamming democratic nominee joe biden at a Campaign Rally in New Hampshire and telling the crowd, they wont be safe until Bidens America again, hes referring to nownowadays america. And theres trumps america, which we should get into as well. Josh letterman for us at the white house. Break down what the president is saying. Reporter after sticking largely to the script in his 70minute speech to the Republican National convention this week, the president was back to his usual style of ad libbing and riffing as he rallied supporters last night in New Hampshire, but interestingly the message was very much the same. It boils down to this. In joe Bidens America, you will not be safe. And its a message centering around law and order that really the Trump Campaign that be congealing around in the past few days. That old messaging about joe biden not being apt mentally, kind of falling away with a real focus now on law and order. Trump Campaign Officials say that the events that americans are witnessing on the ground in kenosha, wisconsin, here in washington, and in other places is buttressing that message. So theyre really honing in on it. President trump last night describing protesters here in washington who were outside his speech as thugs, saying that we cannot let a group of nutjobs destroy the country. But if theres one thing that President Trump and the democrats agree on right now, its the stakes in this election. Take a listen. This november, each of you will vote in truly the most important election in the history of our country. I used to say it about 2016. This is now at a new level. Joe biden is the puppet of the radical Left Movement that seeks to obliterate and destroy everything that you hold dear. And snaeenator Kamala Harris the Vice President ial nominee is responding to the president s messaging in a fundraiser that she held last night. She says the president is deploying fear tactics and shes warning supporters that those tactics could actually work. But she says that if democrats hold firm with their truth, she hopes ultimately that message will prevail. And josh, speaking of biden and harris, do you have any sense of are we getting in guidance if they plan to leave the greater washington, d. C. And delaware area anytime soon . I know the president is traveling to texas and louisiana and New Hampshire. Hes out there on the campaign. What about the other guys . Reporter were starting to get a sense from the Biden Campaign that theyre beginning to have a little bit more travel, especially to some of these battleground states, where the president and the Vice President are really making their presence known on the ground. The Biden Campaign has tried to draw this contrast by showing that theyre the ones following the science and not putting people needlessly in harms way by doing this on the ground campaigning. For example, at this rally that the president had last night in New Hampshire, when it was announced on the loud speakers that everyone needed to put their masks on, there was booing taking place in this largely unsocial ll lly distanced campa there. What we hear from their aides, they understand that biden and harris need to be visual as well, so theyre trying to do that. Josh, thank you. This morning, National Guard members from three different states are in kenosha, wisconsin. This comes after days of protests in the city over the Police Shooting of jacob blake and a call for help from wisconsins governor. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is there. Reporter the Sheriffs Office says bond was posted in jacob blakes case and that hes no longer shackled to his hospital bed. Wisconsins top Law Enforcement officer responding late today. Do you believe that it was appropriate for him to be shackled to the bed, given that he was paralyzed from the waist down . I do not any that mr. Blake should have been in handcuffs, no. Reporter earlier, kenosha officials said the restraints were standard procedure. Hes being guarded because hes under arrest and it was for an outstanding warrant for thirddegree sexual assault. Reporter state authorities identified two more officers at the vascene of the shooting. Officers say officer vincent arains unsuccessfully deployed his taser and officer brittney meranek was also there. Wics attorney general says only officer Rusten Shesky fired his gun and that blake admitted to authorities he had a knife. He was interview after he had been shot seven times . There have been a number of interviews conducted in this case. Reporter Court Hearing was postponed in illinois for kyle rittenhouse, the white teenager now charged with the murder of two protesters earlier this week. Rittenhouses attorney tells nbc news, this was classic selfdefense and we are going to prove it. But rittenhouses case has outraged blakes family after he was seen in this video walking by police after the gunfire before being arrested hours later. They let him literally go home. So that tells you, a black man who is making no threat to the police, walking away from them, is shot seven times in the back. A white man kills two people and walks by the police and is not shot and not killed. The police chief says the officers did not know rittenhouse was a suspect. I believe everybody out there in Law Enforcement has been friendly to both sides. Reporter President Trump is blaming the summers violent protest across the country on poor leadership in what he calls democratrun cities. That is definitely someone who is illinformed of our community. Reporter John Antaramian is kenoshas mayor. How much of the increased tension is due to the militias that came here . I am one of those who think that the militias create part of the problem. Do not want them here. That is nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reporting from kenosha, wisconsin. Those ongoing protests only highlighting the tale of two countries during the rnc. You have the fires, the riots, a lone shooter there in kenosha, wisconsin, while republicans double down on law and order messaging, suggesting democrats are too lame. Your vote will decide whether we protect lawabiding americans or whether we give free rein to violent anarchists and agitators and criminals, who threaten our citizens. Democratrun cities across this country are being overrun by violent mobs. It is clear that a vote for biden and the democrats creates the risk that you will bring this lawlessness to your city, to your town, to your suburb. The hard truth is, you wont be safe in joe s america. Joining us now, nazita, an assistant professor in the department of Political Science at Michigan State university. Nazita, welcome in. You just heard some of the gops law and order messaging there. Lets do some Fact Checking here. How does the picture theyre painting stack up to reality . I mean, i think its pretty clear that the picture that the gop is painting is one that is quite biased. Its one that paints peaceful protests, a right that we have in this country, as one that is violent. Its a scare tactic being used. The word suburb is code for white. And i think that the gop is making a very distinct line about who is being affected by all of this. And is reshifting the lens from the tragedies and the devastation that, you know, black americans and people of color in this country face. And trying to rescript the narrative. For the most part, they didnt address a lot of what was taking place, or the core issues of what were taking place in kenosha, wisconsin, this week. Joe biden and Kamala Harris did. They responded to the unrest in kenosha. Heres a listen. I condemn violence in any form, whether its loot organize whatever it is. The problem we have right now is, were in Donald Trumps america. He views this as a political benefit to him. You know, hes rooting for more violence, not less. We must always defend peaceful protest, and peaceful protesters. We should not confusing them with those looting and committing acts of violence. We will not let these vigilantes and extremists derail the path to justice. You follow this stuff. Y
