When we breathe in allergens, our bodies react by overproducing 6 key inflammatory substances that cause our symptoms. Flonase helps block 6. Most allergy pills only block one and 6 is greater than 1. With more complete relief you can enjoy every beautiful moment to the fullest. Flonase. 6 is greater than 1 changes everything. Good morning. Im alex witt, 9 00 in the east, 6 00 in the west. A brandnew poll this morning shows where President Trumps job approval stands in the wake of protests. The nbc marist poll shows President Trump less than 40 in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. These states helped him get elected. This is after the charolettesville protests and the president s reaction to it. A group of yale classmates for Steve Mnuchin criticized him from not separating from President Trump. In a Statement Last newt, mnuchin said, while i find it ha hard to believe i should have to defend myself on this or the president , i feel compelled to let you know that the president in no way, shape or form believes that neonazi and other hate groups who endorse violence are equivalent to groups that demonstrate to peaceful lawful ways. Theres a person in charge whos had the same ideas, same goals and same philosophy for 30 years. The departure of steve bannon is an important measure but also something that is not a finite decision because that doesnt fundamentally change the way the president wants to operate. That givesmy more freedom to hold those individuals accountable not on the agenda. A number of those not on the agenda, will be up for reelection next year and there should be account act at the ballot box. Lets go to bridgewater, new jersey, not too far from the president autos bedminster estate. Kelly odonnell is there. A good sunday morning to you. Can you tell us about these new polls and what they mean for the president . Reporter good morning, alex. Day 17 of a 17day working vacation. The final day for the president s stretch to be in his new jersey home. Nbc has done new polling looking at three states essential to the president s victory and trying to get a sense what voters are thinking at this point. Were taushging about wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania. Were looking at more than 6 in 10 voters say trumps conduct as president has embarrassed them versus a quarter that have said it makes them proud. Thats an indication of some of the Different Things the president has said. Thats an accumulation of the tweets. Its the conduct weve seen in the q a from last tuesday. Those sorts whether they be outbursts, the president s temperament or even the policy of the president. Its a reflection of how they think the president is doing in terms of his demeanor. When we look ahead to the midterm elections, which is coming up in 2018, the president currently enjoys a majority with republicans in the senate and house and how do those voters thing about which party should be in control . Theyre looking at in michigan, for example, voters perform a democraticcontrolled congress. You look at the numbers in pennsylvania, majority also by a tenpoint spread of a democrat preference. In wisconsin, a bit nair o any narrower bit. President trump, who will be in arizona on tuesday may be already start campaigning in tough states. Arizona not in that trio, but states where there is a lot of volatility, and the president through tweets is encouraging the candidacy of kelly ward, who is a very conservative political figure trying to unseat jeff flake in the primary, the republican primary. Hes a current sitting senator. Alex . Lets get to reaction within the white house to the protests in boston yesterday. What did you hear . Reporter certainly the president was watching this at some point. He used his twitter feed to talk about it. He was able to send a couple different messages that on their face were different than what we saw with charolettesville. The president began by talking about Law Enforcement and he also applauded, as he put it, the many protesters in boston speaking out against bigotry and hate, our country will soon come together as one. The president are also said that our great country has been divided for decades and will come together. He talked about Law Enforcement and talked about antipolice agitatorings in an earlier tweet. You had the president talking about different sentiments going on in boston. As the day went on and the proportion of Peaceful Protesters as compared to those who were protesters, he seemed to have an uplifting message in his tweets. Thanks from bridgewater, near bedminster. For analysis, lets bring in roland martin, host on tv1. Good to see you. Likewise. You have less than 40 approving of the president in these key states, michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin. Those were pivotal states during the election. More than 60 are saying trumps overall conduct embarrass them. A quarter say its made them proud. What do you think of those numbers . I would love to know what the hell those folks were thinking last year when they voted for donald trump. We knew who he was. We saw the racial buttons he was pushing. We saw how degrading he was to women. Heres the problem. If you look at gerrymandering in this country, it doesnt matter what the overall numbers are. The question s what are the numbers in each Congressional District . 700,000 will be deciding what takes place when it comes to congress, whether theyll flip or not. Thats the real issue. Republicans in many of these states, especially southern states, will be able to gerrymandering a lot of these districts. Set up super republican districts. The question is, how will independents in those areas flow . Will moderate republicans actually vote for a democrat . Thats the real issue we face, whether the house or senate will flip in 2018. Does anything you have seen thus far lead you to believe these kind of numbers reflecting the presidency will change between now and the midterms . One, you never know. The question is, will you see tax reform . Will you see bills passed by congress . Will you see a president whos 71 years old stop acting like a child and start acting like a grownup . This is august 2017. Youre talking about an election 14, 15 months away. They could potentially pass legislation that would be appealing to folks in those areas. I highly doubt, it but that could very well happen. So, can general kelly right the ship . Can by getting rid of steef bannon, can it stabilize this white house . I doubt it. The most predictable thing about this presidency, is that its unpredictable. Lets take a look at the high of the protests. The president was giving them praise and calling them antipolice agitators. He also praised steve ban saying he was going to be a bright voice at breitbart. It is undeniable that donald trump is appealing to White Supremacists, to racists in this country. He clearly understands the buttons hes pushing. When he descended on that elevator he attacked mexicans, calling them racist, calling them rapists, calling them killers. He told black folks a year ago, what the hell do you have to go . When Jeff Sessions targeting affirmative action when you see them basically wanting to use private prisons again. When you look at them trying to pull back on a descent decree in baltimore and chicago. Its real clear where donald trump stands when it comes to the issue of race in this country. What i appreciated yesterday was that you have white people of conscience who rose up to come out in boston to speak out against this. Black folks were here. Black folks knew about donald trump. 94 of black women voted against donald trump. 89 or so of black men voted against donald trump. Latinos knew that. 53 of White America actually, more than that. But white women also voted for donald trump. Thats the issue here. Will White America say, hey, this man is unfit and immoral to be president of the United States. Interestingly, you know, there was a decent percentage of the black evangelical vote that ended up supporting donald trump. I want to fold into the discussion the departure of the new yorkbased pastory from that new yorkbased pastory from reverend bernard. I want to play for you what he told my colleague, joy reid, yesterday. There was hope. As a christian were thinking hope, redemption. That is the window through which we see the world. There was hope there. After a while you have to make a decision. Every decision you make in life is a value of judgment. I had to determine cost versus worth. How much is this costing me to continue in this relationship and how much is it worth . Is it worth that time and effort. It took me 40 years to build my credibility. That goes away in four or eight years if it was that long. Not outright saying charolettesville was a last straw for him but why are other evangelical leaders stalg on . First, i know pastor a. R. Bernard. When he joined the pastoral panel, i asked him, why the hell are you aligning with this guy . Hes a longtime republican. I understand that. But we knew how donald trump was. This is no shock how hes acting and bhafing. The percentage of black evangelical vote is what he got is comparable to mitt romney. White conservative evangelicals have always played footsie with White Supremacists as well as White Nationalists. A couple months ago reverend mcidzik out of texas condemned the altright, and they initially balgd at that saying his resolution was not fully about the christian value chastised him. Overwhelmingly they passed it but it wasnt unanimous. Im calling out james robinson, im calling out the likes of paula white, people like Jerry Falwell jr. , and ralph reed. Ralph was a great guy, but white evangelicals tony perkins, im talking to you as well. White, conservative evangelicals need to stop being partisan and prophetic. You are called to serve jesus christ in your ministry. You have to remember, it was the church in america that also fostered segregation, that fostered White Supremacy. Many folks in the klan were also in the pulpit, they were in the pew. White conservative evangelicals need to get a backbone and understand they have a prophetic voice and they should be challenged at every turn. Unfortunately, they are aiding and abetting this nonsense with donald trump. Their silence is deafening. Amen to that. Very quickly, i do want to pass talk about the passing of the civil rights icon David Gregory last night. He sacrificed his career as a comedienne. He fought on the front lines of the civil rights movement. Comedy club owners were how did his actions help propel the work of dr. King and the activists during this dark period . First of all, have have an entertainer of his statue to stang alongside dr. King, andrew young and others, was critically important. He used his skills and his resources, and also sacrificed for his family, he was on the road. He was away from his family in the move. 11 kids to take care of. It was extraordinary. Pardon . 11 kids to take care of. Absolutely. He was a friend. He appeared on my show last june 23rd when he was honored in d. C. Hell be missed. People need to understand, he understood consciousness. We were talking about White Conservative evangelicals. Dick gregory did not say, im going to go out and make my money on the stage and, hey, ill send the check. He said, im going to put my body on the line. He was there physically, not just when it came to a check. So a tree Freedom Fighter and somebody who people should know, understand and respect. Hell be greatly missed. Well be paying tribute to him all week long on tv one tomorrow and a special show on friday, every interview he did on my show. A great guy. Ill miss seeing him, talking to him. An amazing individual, an american hero. I remember donald trump tweeted about these beautiful statue. You want to put a statue, put one up for dick gregory. Appreciate your time. Hes out but will steve bannon haunt the white house. Hes called a bomb thrower who clashed with top officials, so will he seek revenge . Mr. Bannon is a friend of mine. I like him. Hes a good man. He is not a racist, hes a good person. S 6 am. 40 million americans are waking up to a gillette shave. The president s response over the weekend and then again at his press conference really energized the American Public and, frankly, scared the dalts out of him. The president has to say the lead role and say those organizations are not and should not be part of the american fabric. Unfortunately, hes been wishywashy on that subject. Democratic congressman from california on the estimated turn out of 40,000 people of an antiracism march yesterday, after the president equated the charolettesville with the counterdemonstrations there. Do you think well see more public responses like this if the president doesnt walk his comments back . I think certainly the public does seem energized. You do have those people out there who really want to send him a message that naziism, White Supremacy isnt acceptable in this country and they feel the president s response was not strong enough. I dont know that the president has any plans to walk back his comments. He seems to think his comments were sufficient and he made very clear on tuesday there were issues on both sides. There are a lot of his supporters backing him up in that. And a majority of republicans agree with him. So, i think hes so, i dont see the president walking back his response so that may lead to more actions like you saw in boston. The Washington Post is reporting maralago, the club there, has lost its ninth Charity Event this week after the president s controversial comments on charolettesville. More than half have bolted. Do these kind of responses resonate deeply with the president more than any backlash . He may be sitting in empty balance rooms the next time he goes tomaralago . Its quite possible. Well see what happens this fall but its part of a broader trend he should be taking note of because its not just people at maralago. Its also the Business Executives pulling out of his advisory councils. The generals who all made comments directly at odds of his assessment in charolettesville as well as the party leaders. Here is the irony of this situation, alex, is going into this presidency, you know there was huge controversy about the president not divesting himself from his businesses because he would be benefiting from people trying to curry favor. What were seeing here is it can go two ways. Because he didnt divest, now his businesses are a symbol for people who want to express themselves, whether that be they support him or in this case, displeasure. So, you do see the potential here that if this president continues to respond to the situations we know will continue to come up with these rallies, there are morallies planned, this could be a onetime thing this week of people responding in this news cycle or could be a part of a much more serious trend for his business of people backing out. Interesting point there. Ladies, lets look at the new nbc marist polls out this morning. What do you think, do you think the white house is intepting these numbers in any serious way that could cause them to change their tactics or, poll numbers, we dont Pay Attention to them . I think thats what theyve been doing thus far. I think even you saw the president s social media adviser talking about putting something out on twitter about the polls and how wrong they were during the election. I think theres a comfort in that that they find that, well, you know, the polls all said that, you know, that he that president could and when, they were looking at the national vote. Obviously, he didnt win the popular vote. They look at that and say, look, he overcame all of those odds so we can kind of discount some of these polls. It has to be concerning to a certain extent when youre looking at poll numbers at the level this president has seen. Your thoughts, michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, key states to his victory, heidi. Well, at the same time, alex, if you look at what happened in this moment with charolettesville and drill down to the polls and ask his voters, his base, specifically of what they thought of his response to charolettesville, he only lost two points. This was part of a broader trend that happened before charolettesville. Its a bigger problem that has to do with the failure on health care. I was out in his base in Southern Illinois, a district he won by 12 points. People were generally supportive. They dont blame him right now, they blame congress. As much as they might discuss their displeasure but at what point do they blame the president and Congress Instead of the media. Well see in 14, 15 months w
