That. Not true, not true cpac stunner. The crowd turns on a conservative writer after she calls some in her party hip k hypocrit hypocrites. This hour she joins me to tell us why herm message was so unwelcome. And ivanka in south korea and whether her efforts play any part in a diplomatic thaw. House intel chairman devin nunes squaring off with adam schiff over the fisa memo he offered. Its important for the public to see the facts that the fbi acted appropriately in seeking a warrant from carter page. Theyre not part of some deep state as the president apparently would like the public to believe. Ive been on the committee for ten years, jake. This is the first time the republicans have ever taken any issue with any fisa application. I dont think its a coincidence that it serves the president s interest to do so here. It should scare people that you have a Political Party in this country actually saying, dont worry, American Public, its okay. We do this all the time. Were going to go dig up dirt on our opponent, get it from russians, get it from the brits and were going to take it to the fbi and open up an investigation to another campaign. Thats what the democratic memo says. Meanwhile, President Trump airing his grievances against Ranking Member adam schiff. Then at one point appearing to take a swipe at attorney general jeff sessions. Heres what he said on an interview on fox last night. Hes a bad guy. But certainly the memo was a nothing. A lot of bad things happened on the other side, not on this side, but on the other side. And somebody should look into it, because what they did is really fraudulent, and somebody should be looking into that, and by somebody, im talking about youknowwho. You have all these committees, everybody is looking. There is no collusion. No phone calls, i had no phone calls, no meetings, no nothing. There is no collusion. I say it all the time, anybody that asks. There is no collusion. Helping us dig into this this hour, our top stories today, Nbcs Kelly Odonnell at the white house for us, nbc National Political reporter mike nemely along with Kimberly Adkins and jonathan remere from the associated press. Ill also be talking to representative steve cohen in just a little bit. Lets go to Kelly Odonnell with reaction at the white house on the democratic memo. Kelly, what can you tell us . Reporter when the president referred to the bad guy, he was smacking adam schiff, not the attorney general. He said youknowwho meaning the attorney general might examine that further, just to clarify on that. The president s spokesman was reacting as well today, and youve got this battle of the competing memos where republicans had three weeks to tell their story where they allege that the main basis of the surveillance that was obtained against a former Trump Campaign aide was this dossier written by the former British Intelligence officer. And they say that the fbi and department of justice did not fully disclose that it was paid for by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National committee as a work product, that what we learned now from the democrats is that the court was told there was a political incentive in that, that it was intended to discredit donald trump as a candidate, but it did not explicitly learn that it was the Clinton Campaign and the dnc. So both have a point to make there. The democrats are saying there was other evidence that was compelling prior to the dossier, that this individual carter page was already on the radar of officials and an investigation had already begun. So, therefore, there was not an improper use of that dossier. Some of it is quite complicated. Both sides have points theyre trying to make to steer the narrative. Here is how the president s spokesman rajah reacted to the president s reaction on this and whats clear about this battle. I think the president is right, this memo is a bust. It doesnt undercut the serious questions raised by the nunes memo on the departments conduct year before last in this fisa warrant and this investigation altogether. Reporter so the republicans have said there was partisan influence in the way certain fbi and department of justice leaders were presenting information to the National Security court, the fisa court. Democrats say thats just not the case, that there is abundant evidence that has not entirely been made public because of its sensitive nature that undercuts that argument. This is information that is typically not debated in an open way like this which makes the memo back and forth so compelling and, in fact, hard to follow. The president , of course, has in his interest to try to discredit the investigation. Weve seen that again and again, and theyre doing that with the president s comments calling in to fox news last night just after the memo was released to sort of tamp down its exposure and the spokesman continuing to criticize it as well, as democrats are trying to get their point out in this first day since its been made public. Aaron . Kelly odonnell at the white house for us this morning. Kelly, thank you. Lets bring in nbcs mike nemely now. What are you hearing . Is this memo a bust, as the president has said . As far as the substance, we can get into that a little bit. I think Kelly Odonnell did a good overview of that. Democrats here saying they had a complaint of this being released, it was the timing of it, that it came out late on a saturday afternoon, we have the olympics going on, a lot of other news, a lot of other headlines. They think the white house was trying to bury this. The timeline is important. It was a month ago that republicans in the House Committee voted to make the nunes memo public. They voted against having the democrats release their own memo at the same time. Then two weeks later when they unanimously did vote to put the schiff memo out, the white house originally said they would not release it due to the highly classified nature of some of the information here. I was told by a democratic staffer on the House Intelligence Committee that the white house had a memo here that was finished with the process, working with the fbi to take out some of most Sensitive Information here for at least 72 hours before they released it. A big complaint here this was not allowed to be put into the public space here at a time there would be more attention to it. I will say democrats are actually quite pleased that the president felt the need to call in to fox news last night. If the intent was to bury this on the weekend, the president may have undone some of this by giving voice to this in his own words last night on fox news. So we have two memos out here now. Will any of these memos have an impact on the 2020 election . No, theyve been performing the investigation into the russian interference in the election of 2016. This is all about what Robert Mueller and his team do, but the democrats said they feel good about this memo getting out because they can use it to try to come to the defense of the fbi and the Justice Department when they feel republicans have really been running a sustained campaign here to discredit it. Now we have the extraordinary step here of democrats quoting directly from a fisa warrant, one of the most sensitive documents that we have, in order to help make the case that, in fact, the court was fully informed about some Political Commission here behind some of the information in that dossier, and as Congress Returns this week, youll see democrats continue to be able to use that trying to level the Playing Field here. Reporter from washington, mike nemely, thank you. Lets bring in nbc political analyst and Kimberly Adkins, chief washington reporter for the Boston Herald and msnbc contributor. The white house is trying to make the argument that the democrats failed to undercut the nunes memo. Whats your take on this . It simply about the politics. Youre right, the white house has done this time and time again, whether it be the conservatives on the hill, those friendly to the trump cause and those in the white house that try to tamp down anything that comes from russia, try to discredit and muddy the waters when it comes to the Mueller Probe and these ongoing congressional investigations. The memo here is no exception. Lets remember, when the nunes memo first surfaced a few weeks bag, t back, the president was telling people he would put it out, he was seizing on it, he wanted to release it before he even read it. We remember the video clip that it would be 100 that he would put it out. At the ap we know he was calling an informal Kitchen Cabinet in the phone calls of residents night after night telling them he believed this was something that would clear his name, or at vet least, muddy the waters in terms of the russian probe. And they put it out with, in some ways, a lot of fanfare. This was exactly the opposite. They haggled over it for weeks, released it on a saturday, buried it during a busy news weekend, at the height of the olympics, and van suggested that we had to redact some of it as well. But the president is trying to once again tamp down on this and suggest that he believes, of course, that he did nothing wrong. Hes suggesting this memo is the latest piece of evidence that proves that. Kimberly, i know youve taken a deep dive into both of these memos. From your analysis, is there anything that both republicans and democrats in those memos agree on . There are several things, and neither of them paint a positive picture in terms of the president s attempt to say there is nothing going on here. In both memos it states that the investigation into russian meddling preceded this dossier, the steele dossier that is the basis of the claims by President Trump and congressman nunes, that there was an inappropriate surveillance of carter page and thats really the basis of this whole probe. The probe preceded that. And the fact that carter page himself is at the center of this, i think its very interesting that the president keeps bringing all of this attention to it. Carter page, an aide to the Trump Campaign, was deeply connected with russians by his own admissions. The fbi was investigating him long before this probe began. So you would think that that would be a problematic thing, to have such a focus on him being connected to this campaign. But in the end, you know, as was already said, this does not this memo does not exonerate the president , or the nunes memo does not exonerate the president. Both these memos really underscore problems with the campaign in terms of its connection to people with connections to russia, and i think the biggest result of all of this is really just the House Intelligence Committee, which was formed in the wake of watergate, to be a key watchdog on the executive to make sure that Something Like watergate doesnt happen again. This committee has devolved into a partisan feud, and really, whatever comes out of it at this point, its hard to think it can be very effective anymore. I do want our viewers to hear two things. Weve talked about one of the points of contention is whether the fbi should have told the court specifically who was funding the steele dossier. First ill play republican congressman devin nunes argument on this and then democrat congressman adam schiff. Listen to this. They wanted out. This is why they wanted out and we didnt because it bolsters the case made specifically on the fisa abuse and that the democrats ended up paying for this dirt. It ended up being phony. That the democrats would attack the procedures requiring they minimize the names of u. S. Persons and u. S. Entities that are not the subject of a warrant. So even Hillary Clinton and donald trump are referred to as candidate 1 and candidate 2. Theyre supposed to mask the identities of people. So, jonathan, is it procedural not to disclose or is transparency required here . I think its largely procedural is what we know so far, but that doesnt matter to the president. The politics of this is whats so key. The phrase is witch hunt. He uses it time and time again, including in a recent tweet, that he believes this entire thing is politically motivated. Our line of defense is theres been no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russian officials and it was done by the obama era Justice Department and the fbi, that theyre probing something that doesnt exist. And that here the Clinton Campaign in the president s estimation is the one that bankrolled this steele dossier and therefore that should be disclosed. Again, as pointed out, it was said, though not clinton by name, that trying to discredit the Trump Campaign was in the original dossier, and therefore, in his mind, that means its all discredited. But again, these memos agree on a key point, that the fbis involvement carter page was already on their radar well before the steele dossier, and therefore it seems like that argument that the white house is making falls apart. Kimberly, very quickly here, what happens now . Is the ball in the inspector generals court at this point . I think what really happens now is that we keep an eye on what Robert Mueller is doing. The special counsel investigation is moving forward. They have all the information that the Senate Committees have and more. And i think thats the key thing here. Weve seen how meticulous he has been through the information that has come out from indictments and other filings in that case. The purpose of these Senate Committees is to investigate russian meddling and come up with some sort of solution, whether its legislation or recommendation of sanctions. I dont think we can really trust that to happen, at least on the house side. Well keep an eye on the senate intel committee, but at the end of the day what really will get to the bottom of everything is the mueller investigation. All right, Kimberly Adkins of the Boston Herald and jonathan limere of the associated press, thank you both. Thank you. He asked students in his own district about gun control. Thats next. I cant live with it. This has to stop with parkland and my daughters death cant be in vain. It has to be the last one. Andrew pollack whose daughter meadow was killed at Stoneman Douglas high school calls for no more killings, congressman, member of the judiciary committee. Are you sensing an appetite for any real change on capitol hill right now . I think theres always been a difference in the parties. I think the democrats want to have a study. They want the cdc to look into gun violence and they want to have changes in background checks that are universal background checks and limit access to assault weapons which we did in 2004. Most of the republicans voters are on that side and they dont want any votes whatsoever and havent brought a bill to the floor. They may bring some small bill that President Trump has talked about, that wouldnt be universal, and that will probably come to pass. But we cant bring amendments concerning the real issues. Raising the age limit to 21 for assault weapons, im all for that, but the Church Killers and killers in texas, they were over 21. It wasnt the average 19 or 20yearold who may have mental issues that caused them to lose the weapon. So do you think there will be lip service when congress is back in session tomorrow and nothing will actually happen . I think minor changes will happen, but it will be mostly lip service. You had it in las vegas. All of a sudden everybody, including the republicans, were all for outlawing bump stocks. Now the president goes to the atf which cant be legally done. It would be challenged in court and probably overthrown. It needs to be done by legislation. The nra and speaker ryan want nothing on the floor. We are controlled by republicans and im afraid we have to have a major blue wave in 2018 to give democrats the ability to speak on this issue, on issues of reform, on russia, you name it. The Republican Party has gone off the rails and they have lost all perspective on guns, on safety, on finances, on tax fairness, on income disparity, on voting rights, on civil rights, you name it. Theyre not the party that eisenhower or even reagan knew.
