I will be emailing you and venmoing you good dollars. Welcome to a busy day on capitol hill. Busy day as politico points ou. Attorney general william barr testified on the budget request. His first appearance since he released his principle findings on the Mueller Report. Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin testified on the 2020 budget request and fielded tough questions about Congress Request for Donald Trumps tax returns. Andrew wheeler testified on the epas budget cuts defending the white houses proposal to slash funding by over 30 and other top officials from the Obama Administration also testified on climate change, we had tech executives from google and facebook testifying on the global rise of hate crimes and White Nationalism online and executives from some of the biggest pharmacy and testified on Prescription Drug pricing. Officials from custom protections and Homeland Security testified on the recent influx of migrants at the southern border and right now mike pompeo is testifying on why the administration is cutting more money from the state departments budget. Everything i just said is happening today. But, first, who is factually accurate . That is one of the many questions that the democratic chair of the House Committee repeatedly asked william barr directly challenging trumps, but barrs fourpage Statement Reads while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, this part, it also does not exonerate him. Barr refused to directly answer questions on that. Saying, hed deliver a redacted version of the Mueller Report to congress and the public within a week and then respond to questions then. But that didnt stop lawmakers from trying and trying again. You will recognize that im operating under a regulation that was put together during the Clinton Administration and does not provide for the publication of the report. But i am relying on my own discretion to make as much public as i can. Thinking of the special counsel was not a mystery to the people at the department of justice prior to his submission of the report. He and his people have been interacting with the Deputy Attorney general and lawyers supporting the Deputy Attorney general. I said what i am going to say about the report today. I have issued three letters about it. I already laid out the process that is Going Forward to release these reports. Hopefully within a week. And im not going to say anything more about it until the report is out and everybody has a chance to look at it. All right, he says that is going to happen within the week. Lets go to nbcs jeff bennett at capitol hill. I have laid out a buffet of stuff happening in washington. Take your pick where you want to start. That barr hearing goes down as one of the more memorable congressional hearings. And he was there to talk about the doj budget for incoming year but because that was his first public appearance since he released his summary of the Mueller Report, their questions were focused on all things Robert Mueller. I think it might be helpful to break down the take aways into two columns. What barr says he will do and what he says he will not do. He says he will release a redacted version of this report. You heard him say there within the week. Lindsey graham put a finer point on it. He said he has spoken with the attorney general and the sense that he gets is that barr will release this report by the end of this week. So, perhaps, friday. But barr says that report will be redacted. And for all of those black boxes that might be in that document, hes going to also include a color coded explanation. So, theres heres the attorney general telling people in their own words what they should expect to see within just a few days. Right now the special counsel is working with us on identifying information in the reports that fall under those four categories. We will color code the excisions from the report and provide explanatory notes describing the basis for each redaction. So, for example, if a redaction is made because of court order and appending prosecution, well state that and we will distinguish between the various categories. And barr says he will also include in this redacted report, behavior that was investigated as possible obstruction that has not been previouslyert ro lly r. Thats what he said he is going to do. Hes not going to give democrats the thing that they want. He is not going to hand over to the House Judiciary Committee the full unredacted document. He will not release grand jury testimony and he is also, ali, not going to go to court to see if that grand jury testimony can be released. But, beyond that, he says, once this redacted version is made available to congress, hes willing to work with the heads of the relevant committees. In this case, the house and senate Judiciary Committees led by Jerry Lindsey graham. Thats fine with me, i get the redacted report, were good to go. Jerry nadler has the subpoenas in his back pocket and hes poised and ready to pounce. I spoke to her after this hearing that she held to get her view on all of this. Heres what she told me. It was clear that the attorney general is an appointee of the president of the United States. And his allegiance was to the president of the United States not necessarily to the truth. And this is what we have to pursue and i look forward to seeing the entire report without dedactions. I think he has an obligation to present it to us and to the congress and i need to know more about this discussion of the fourpage report with the white house. Fighting words from democrats. Because you have jerry nadler still fighting you will have a dispute between the legislative and executive branch that could work its way up to the supreme court. Thank you, Geoff Bennett on capitol hill. He will speak with the house and senate Judiciary Committee to decide if more is needed. Joining me now as a house of the Democratic Committee democratic congresswoman representing the Virgin Islands stacy. Representative, good to see you. Thank you for being with us. Good to see you. What questions do you have after hearing bill barr talking about the report and what will be redacted. Well, of course, i think that my colleagues did a great job in the questioning during the hearing. So the questions that remain are the questions that come from the actual report itself. So, its until we have that 400page report that we should at this point really be able to hone in on the questions that are plaguing not just us members of congress, but the nation. And my concern, of course, is as to the redaction process, barr says that there are going to be four categories in which he will do the redactions. We have incidents where reports in full were given to us and closed sessions that we could not take out so we could comb through it properly. My concerns is that those redacted pieces contain information that we should see, as well as the grand jury information, which barr says he will not go after. And that we should, if we are interested in it, fight the courts to allow that to come forward. Do you see any need to subpoena Robert Mueller . At this point, lets, i think, we should wait until we have the report. We were told it will be within the week and some coming days. Allow the members of congress, as well as our outstanding staff to go through that and from that we will determine what our next steps are. Either, one, asking for the full report because the redactions are so great that were unable to see what is really behind it. And or having mueller come and testify in front of us. Or in a closed session. The redactions are, you know, were beginning to understand that some of the redactions are what we would be called for under the law. There are some, the 6e the grand jury redactions which arguably if they were in the national interest, the attorney general could ask a judge to have them made available to you, members of the Judiciary Committee or members of congress or the public. Then there is that fourth category that barr talks about. The unrelated, the third parties. Are you concerned redactions are sometimes in the eye of the redactor . Of course. I have been a prosecutor and worked at main justice and i understand redactions are subjective. Thats why the concern that we all have as to what the redactions are. I think that there should be a full report unredacted that are given to members of congress. We have security clearances, so do our staff. We can look at that behind closed doors and be responsible about it and the public should see the redacted version and we, representing the people, will make the determination whether or not that is sufficient information for the public to see. Stacy plasket, t, thank you r talking to me. Thank you. Earlier barr denied reports that he was urging his administration to reinstate the family separation policy. I want to go to the white house. Nbc hans nichols is there. Brandnew numbers from dhs about things going on at the border. Official numbers for march and the numbers of apprehension that the border for march are over 100,000. 103,000. That works out to about 3,000 a day and thats why you have officials down on the border talking about the crisis. Now, lets break these numbers down. More than half of them are family units. Family units trying to get here from those northern triangle countries. You have 30,000 single adults and close to 9,000 unaccompanied children. Of the 103,000, 92,000 were picked up or apprehended between ports of entry. Not through the points of entry. And thats why potentially you have on the southern border you hear all these officials talking about how difficult it is. Take a brief moment here, a Conference Call to talk about the difference in rhetoric between what youre hearing from the Border Patrol and youre hearing from the white house. From the Border Patrol in this briefing, they said you need to change the message to those southern american countries that if you come to this country with a child, youll get in. They apparently want to change that on the border. Now, you contrast that with what we just heard from the president a couple hours ago in the oval office. He seemed to be saying that family separation would not be a policy that he would be returning to. Remember, over the summer they announced this. They have this zero tolerance that led to family separations and then the president backtracked. Today they doubled down and said thats not something that well be going back to. The rhetoric coming from his own border officials down there on the border seem to suggest that they want to send a message. A message to central america. If you have a child, that doesnt necessarily mean youll make it into this country. This is a very tense and complicated situation. Were getting all these numbers from all these different places, ali. Those are the latest. Hans, thank you for your reporting on this. Breaking news from boston where more charges have been filed against some of the parents caught up in the College Admission cheating scandal. 16 parents, including Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband have now been charged with Money Laundering and conspiring to commit fraud. Loughlin and her husband are accused of paying 500,000 to help their two daughters get into the university of southern california. Just yesterday we learned Felicity Huffman was among several parent who agreed to plead guilty in connection with the scandal. Joining us to talk more about this is tom winter and miguel. Tom, first of all, these are more charges against people we already knew were going to be charged. What is the distinction . When you get charged on a complaint which happened first. Youre presented for a preliminary hearing which almost never happens or prosecutors go to a grand jury and say, we want you to review the evidence. If you vote for theseurg ch cha that perp son is indicted. Prosecutors based on my understanding of what happened behind the scene were very clear. You can plead guilty to the things we charged you on a complaint or youre going to be indicted and face additional charges and thats where we are. It was a carrot and a stick. Some people took it. Exactly. Miguel, we know that Felicity Huffman took, its not a deal. She pled guilty and she said what she had done and as a result or at least were seeing shes now not been charged additionally. Yeah, the guidelines for Felicity Huffman are anywhere from four to ten months in federal prison. Her lawyers will argue that shes never been convicted of a crime before and this is, of course, a white collar crime. She should serve no time in prison. But for Lori Loughlin she could face more charges. Prosecutors are weighing their guidelines based on how much the defendants in this case paid for their children to cheat the system. Lo loughlin paid upwards of 500,000 and huffman paid 15,000. When comparing loughlin versus another person she was looking at two years minimum in prison according to the federal guidelines if she pled guilty. Now that she has not been pled guilty, that number could certainly go much higher. Tom, talk to me about the conspiracy, the added charges. What do they relate to . Money laundering. It is all the same. What you saw in the indictment is what we talked about after she was first charged. Were adding this Money Laundering because if youre using the funds in an illegal way and what theyre saying is this is just a donation to a Key Foundation that helped out our daughter. This is not something we are paying for a service, then at that point you have committed fraud. If you use funds to do that illegally, you can be hit with the Money Laundering charge. You have to tie it altogether as part of a same crime as part of a broader conspiracy. Guys, thank you very much. All right. Breaking news. Netanyahu who has led israel for the past decade is facing a tough reelection battle from a party led by former Israeli Military chief benny gantz. The party admitted it hired and gave cameras to 1,200 polling station observers in what it said was an effort to expose voter fraud. According to Jerusalem Post the cameras were sound in several israeli arab towns and recording in polling places is illegal. Several people have been detained. One person not on the ballot but looming large over this election is president donald trump. Trump is popular in israel and some of his recent actions are seen as an action to bolster netanyahus election chances. I want to take a look at some of what he has done.
