MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Ayman Mohyeldin June 23, 2019

Happy. Missing from the stage will be somebody that won in a trump state, we need to win back some of the places we lost if were going to win in 2020. Somebody that has bridged divides, someone from a rural state which i think is important. No morning show interview of a 20 candidate getting more attention than the one with the candidate on the republican side, President Trump sitting down with chuck todd, starting with his message to the leaders of iran. Im not looking for war. And if there is, it will be obliteration like youve never seen before. Im not looking to do that. Do you think impeachment is good politics for you . I think i win the election easier but you know, im not sure i like having it. I would say if i have one do over, i would not appoint Jeff Sessions to be attorney general. In your mind. Yeah. Now, all of this comes a day after the South Carolina Democratic Convention. 21 candidates making a pitch to voters in the sight of the first primary of the 2020 race. While there was a lot of talk on stage, the news was made off stage. Frontrunner joe biden and the candidate who criticized him over comments about working with segregationist senators appeared in back to back exclusive interviews with al sharpton, take a listen. What he said, though, the way he said it caused hurt and harm in communities like the one i live in, saying this about racists, called me son, didnt call me boy. It evoked a lack of understanding, a hurtful ignorance. I do understand the consequence of the word boy but it wasnt said in any of that context at all. To the extent that anybody thought that i meant something different, thats not what i intended. Thats whats being said. Lets look at some of the numbers. Latest polling of voters in South Carolina finds joe biden leading with 37 . Elizabeth warren and Pete Buttigieg in second and third place, 20 points at least between the candidates. And senator Bernie Sanders in fourth with 9 . Lets go to Shaq Brewster live in rock hill, South Carolina, with the sanders campaign. Shaq, whats the center focusing on today, this as if youre a democrat at large, youre worried about what Bernie Sanders might do to the contest. Right, he is focused on the base of support he has. You mention recent polls. Whats noticeable, his performance in South Carolina is lagging behind what you see him do nationally and in other states. You remember, it is in 2016 that South Carolina thwarted his own progress, thwarted how he was able to do it as Hillary Clinton won in a landslide here. Thats why you have senator sanders in rock hill, South Carolina, speaking on the campus of clinton college, a historically black college in rock hill, and it is in a city thats 40 africanamerican. I was able to talk to voters ahead of the speej, get a sense of what theyre listening to and paying attention to. One of the gentlemen was a republican who supported President Trump four years ago. Listen here. Im tired of the establishment. I want to see some change. In what . We heard change last time, heard change the time before, we aint seen any change. My policy now, i dont vote for a single incumbent. We have to clean out washington completely otherwise were not going to see any change. You get to the point where they align with my morals and im okay with them being my leader, i figure out what, who is going to be an efficient president for the rest of the country, not just for me. Who is internationally going to help us get respect back. Reporter and on stage, you heard senator sanders not only mention economic disparity he talks about all the time but highlighted Racial Disparities he said he would fix. Talked about the economy, said he will fix a racist, broken criminal justice system. It shows you, he is trying to expand beyond the core base. He mentioned his core basis young voters, working class americans. Wants to expand that to appeal to African Americans in South Carolina as well. Building on what happened at the Democratic Convention there, when we look at what happened with joe biden and Pete Buttigieg, they havent had good weeks with Race Relations. Did that resonate with voters you had the opportunity to speak with today a day after the convention . Reporter as with anything, it is a mix. I talked with voters in columbia yesterday. I asked about that, were they paying attention to the back and forth, especially with Vice President biden and cory booker and some of the other candidates there over this issue of segregationists, and there was one gentleman in the barbershop said it didnt offend me. I dont think Vice President biden needs to apologize. Another lady said no, i have a problem with that, youre looking on relationships with people who arent likeable people, people who shouldnt be praised. You have a mix of both. The main thing i hear, the Common Thread with every voter i talk to is the priority on President Trump. They dont like when their candidates are going back and forth. They want attention focused on President Trump. That focus on beat the republican at the moment, donald trump specifically, definitely in the mix. Great to have you as always, shack brewster. Thank you. A story getting attention from democrats in South Carolina, the president s sudden delay of i. C. E. Raids that were set to start today to round up undocumented immigrants across the country. Trump says it is because democrats asked him for the delay for negotiations. Nbc reporting shows there were concerns in the white house about how the raids would be carried out, and the negative reaction to the plan. One candidate had intense reaction to the news. Take a listen. This is [bleep]. This is just [bleep] politics. People need to see through that and understand that this guy is a political con man. The candidate with the colorful language joins us now, julian castro, former hud secretary and former mayor of san antonio. Mr. Secretary, thank you for taking time today and being with us. Good to be with you, richard. Mr. Secretary, as we look at whats been offered by the president specific to introduction to the segment, isnt two weeks better than no weeks for the conversation, coming up potentially here with another solution . Well, what the administration should do is it should end family separation and family detention. For folks following this, and i know a lot of viewers watching do, you notice what happens time after time with this president , whether it is what he says he did with regard to pulling down an air strike with iran ten minutes before it was supposed to happen or yesterday saying that he suddenly called off i. C. E. Raids at the request of democrats. He likes to create a circus, but theres never a solution. He creates the crisis, pretends to solve it, but it never really gets solved. I believe what we need to focus on is when are we going to be sure that these children are no longer separated from families, no longer put in detention facilities with these conditions in the first place. I want to move to another topic youre certainly one of the experts of the country on, that has to do with housing, serving as secretary of hud for three years. There are new numbers that came out this month, show a large increase in homelessness in los angeles, for instance. Whats your solution if youre able to have that wish from the bottle, what would you do to stop this rise in homelessness across the country in major cities . Yes. To me, housing is a human right. So i put forward couple weeks ago a housing plan that would invest in creating millions more units of homes that are affordable to the middle class and poor. It would invest so we end family homelessness, chronic homelessness, youth homelessness, veteran homelessness by 2028, and connect the dots between homelessness, other housing opportunity, things like the fact that where you live often determines what kind of education your child can get, what transit opportunities and Job Opportunities you have. So we need to do all those things, but we absolutely need to address homelessness. By the way, richard, i hope this is one of the questions at the debate wednesday and thursday because this crisis that we have of housing opportunity, people paying so much for their rent, 50 or 60 of their income, it touches everybody, republican or democrat, but they never ask about it at the debates, the president ial debates. I hope that msnbc and nbc hosting it, that changes wednesday. Well get to that. Youll be there. Specifically you didnt give me any idea how you would change the dynamic, would you focus on transitional housing, long term housing, would you focus on emergency housing . What is that 15 to 20 second sound bite that can give us an idea because youre an expert on this again, what you would do . I would focus on permanent Supportive Housing with Housing First model. In other words, creating enough units so people can get housing right away, and they have support services so if they have a Mental Health issue or they have to go back and get their ged or some other issue, they have services around them. Using that basic model, we drove veteran homelessness down 47 between 2010 and 2016. So we have seen this can happen, what it takes. How did you do that . Youre giving a head nod to what some folks know and dont know. But you know well. Some say every night in america, one out of three of those homelessness are veterans. Thats right. It is one of the most shameful things about what happens in our country. This was example of washington working the way it should. In 2010, president obama released a vision that said were ending veteran homelessness, they appropriated housing choice vouchers and enough case managers to get vouchers into the hands of veterans that needed it. Cities across the United States and smaller communities adopted best practices like Housing First. They worked on prioritized driving down the number of homeless in their community. Because of that, there were three states and 36 different cities across the country that got to functional zero on veteran homelessness. In my plan, i say if we can do it there, wook do it for family homelessness and other types. We talked about veterans, related to immigration and the headline in the last week with the president and his moves toward deportations. You said you would allow veterans back into the United States if you win the white house. Tell us why veterans are important to you. Obviously youre mayor of a major city that represents veterans in the military, a former mayor. Yeah. I served as mayor of san antonio, san antonio probably calls itself military city, usa. We have thousands of veterans deported, mostly living in mexico today. There are communities of United States veterans who have been deported that are living down there. In my people first immigration plan, i say as soon as i get into office, we will bring the deported veterans back. They have served our country honorably, went above and beyond in service of this country, and i believe they ought to be granted citizenship for their service and it is that simple. I believe they deserve it. I want to move to another topic of reparations. Discussed for the last year with a lot of energy. You are not going to rule out direct checks to African Americans, unlike some of your other competitors here in the space. Why . Because i think we need to support hr 40, congresswoman sheila jacksonlees bill that would create a commission to look at reparations, people that are respected from across the country from different communities, and make a recommendation to the president on how we would do reparations. I see this as analogous to truth and Reconciliation Commission in south africa, in other words, the healing that goes with that process is as important as the actual solution. So i wont rule anything out. I believe everything is on the table there. Is there a range, mr. Secretary, in terms of what you would consider . Again, i believe at this point we need to focus on the process and that we can get to a reasonable abrooch to this. I dont think we should skip over that, thats the important part of bringing americans together, realizing we have to address the original sin of slavery. I dont believe we can move forward as one nation with one destiny in the 21st century, until we address that in a meaningful way. There are a range of options how to do it. First, you have to go through a process thats meaningful. You mention the debate, youre probably doing a couple of preparations for it, mr. Secretary, and i might ask you, what do you hope to accomplish . This as you stand next to senator cory booker, an individual who youve seen on the circuit if you will, just yesterday, speaking in South Carolina. How will you stand out next to a person who many may call very charismatic . The first thing is i asked cory the other day when i saw him what color tie he is wearing. I want to stand out not wearing the same color. He told me blue. He said he would text me what he is going to wear. For me as a lot of folks watching out there know, my name id is not as high as some of the other candidates, so this is the moment where more people are watching whats happening in this 2020 campaign than have watched before. It is a moment where i need to introduce myself to a lot of American Voters who may not have been paying attention until now. I have that opportunity. I have laid out a strong vision for our countrys future, to be the smartest, healthiest, fairest, most prosperous nation on earth. What i want to do wednesday night when i have a chance to answer questions, let americans know how i plan to do that. We released plans on immigration, housing, police, getting led contamination out of the country. I want people to know what i would do to improve their lives. As a closing to the segment, what would your 15 second closing statement be at the debate . We actually have 45 seconds, thankfully. I am giving you 15. Yeah. I would say look, together we can create a prosperous america where everybody counts and everybody will be able to reach their american dream, and i have the right experience and vision to make it happen for our country. Secretary julian castro. Thank you so much. Good luck next week. Thank you. This week. Breaking news, south bend mayor Pete Buttigieg talking about candidates running for the presidency being repeatedly interrupted by shouting and heckling at an extremely tense town hall after the deadly shooting of a black man by a white Police Officer. Josh lieberman is in south bend. The mayor hasnt had an easy pathway after this incident. Just from this weekend, in terms of how he is answering questions from those that are critical of him. How is he doing now . Reporter thats right, he has been struggling for a week since the shooting last sunday to figure out how to respond, what to say to a community thats extremely emotional now. The tensions here in this room in south bend at this high school are very high. Pete buttigieg is trying to explain to the public what is the process after the police shoot a resident and how do they do the investigation, how it has to follow the law, but it is not satisfying people here who have a very visceral reaction. They want action to be taken now. Theyre repeatedly interrupting him, shouting profanities at him, shouting profanities at the naacp chapter president , who is trying to keep things calm, trying to moderate the discussion. It is a reflection of the fact that buttigieg is struggling to figure out what to say to a community thats not satisfied by some of the policy responses that he has come up with to address the issues of race and policing. Josh, the real question is what do folks think that are sitting in the seats behind you. When he was asked the question about do black lives matter, the criticism from the critics is he did not handle it in an understanding way, in a human way, and that he could have done much better. Have they felt he has done much better today and what are they telling you, the folks sitting in this gathering here behind you . Reporter well, it has been a mixed reaction, and it is unfolding literally as we speak in the room. But a lot of people are not satisfied. Pete buttigieg is someone usually unflappable in the public eye, in the last week have seen him a few occasions respond in a way thats shaky, such as when he was asked whether black lives matter, and a few minutes ago when he was heckled, had a terse response to the crowd of are you going to let me finish. Do you want me to actually speak, showing frustration in the fact what he is trying to say to convey how much he cares about the Africanamerican Community in south bend and around the nation is not satisfying the critics. Josh lieberman, covering the town hall meeting there with Pete Buttigieg, to his own residents. Huge test for him as he moves across the country to show his ability to understand major issues related to garnering votes from the Africanamerican Community, from the minority community, and for those who are sensitive to whats happened in the last ten years across america, something that president barack obama also had to address very early in his presidency. Pete buttigieg being tested on that in his hometown. We will be following that throughout the day. Well go back if we see more. For now, a short break. See you in a couple minutes. See you in
