Obamacare on day one of his administration. But does he have a backup plan in place . Executive action. The president with drawing the u. S. From a key trade agreement he says thats good for American Workers but what does it really mean for manufacturing job at home . Lets start with the briefing one of the most hotly anticipated in my memory for sure press Secretary Sean Spicer has become a punchline after a widely ridiculed statement from the Briefing Room podium on saturday. Spicer said in particular President Trumps inauguration featured the largest audience to witness an inauguration. That is false. Check out the two shots, one on the level from president obamas first term inauguration in 2009, on the right from President Trumps inaugural on friday. Spicer also claimed the Floor Coverings you see in the photo on the right were a first for this inauguration, gave an improper view of how many people were there, unfairly highlighting areas of no crowds. January 2013, Floor Coverings there as well, claims the audience was the largest ever, untrue. While tv ratings did weight the second obama administrations, obamas first had far more viewers. Kristen welker and carol lee of the wall street journal join me to start this hour. Both familiar faces around the white house. Kristen, let me start with you. President trump clearly trying to put the focus back on him, his agenda today. Give us the lay of the land. Reporter chronologically youre absolutely right hes trying to turn the page. The white house casting this as a day of action. It started with the president meeting with a number of ceos, from dell, lockheed martin, just to name a few. And vowing he was going to decrease regulations by 75 , that he would lower taxes on middle class americans and that would slap new taxes on companies that tried to outsource jobs. Take a listen to a little bit of what he had to say today. If you go to another country and you decide youre going to close and get rid of 2,000 people or 5,000 people, if that happens, we are going to be imposing a very major border tax on the product when it comes in, which think is fair. Reporter a strong warning to u. S. Companies and a short while ago the president signing three executive orders, chris, in the headline he announced his intention to withdraw from tpp the huge multinational trade deal, we covered it under the obama administration. This is something that never was approved by congress, so ultimately President Trump does have the authority to pull out of that deal and im told according to a white house official hes going to task some of his top economic and trade advisers to renegotiate deals with the individual countries. Im also told that this is step one in trying to renegotiate nafta. Of course, that agreement with mexico and canada, the president set to meet with those leaders in the coming weeks. Listen to how john mccain is reacting to all of this, calling the decision to pull out of the tpp a serious mistake that will have lasting consequences for americas economy and our strategic position in the asiapacific region. So getting some backlash from members of his own party on this first full day of his first week in the white house, and again, press Secretary Sean Spicer set to come to the Briefing Room in about a half hour from now and pressed on all of this as well as the rocky start over the weekend. Chris . Let me go to you, carol. You and i spent a lot of time together in the Briefing Room. Sean spicers comments on saturday even had steve kerr an nba coach, making jokes about it in a press conference. What are the expectations today . Is there a sense in the white house he needs to somehow right this ship . Reporter well, as you know very well, its really, theres always a very kind of rocky transition from going from campaign into governing and i think were definitely seeing that. We saw that on saturday for sure. Theres no question if anyone had a question about whether or not sean spicer speaks for donald trump i think that question was answered on saturday. He was very combative and i think what people are looking for heading into the first briefing is whether that sense of the fact that when youre standing at that podium youre not just speaking for the president and the white house, youre speaking for the entire United States. Youre not just speaking to a press corps. Youre speaking broadly to the world. Whether or not that has sunk in a little bit is one thing that people are looking for, but you know, it was a very unusual, i dont know you cant even call it a briefing because he didnt take any questions, very unusual statement on saturday, and whether or not he comes out and is that combative is one of the main things everybodys going to be looking for. Also were expecting some changes in the way that briefing is operated and how it flows, so that well be looking for those, too. Kristen, in addition to that, while sean spicer was doing that, you have the new president going before the cia, we all know about the tensions between him and the Intelligence Community and the things he said about them, but then he stands before Memorial Wall with stars, not names, because many of the people were undercover, who died to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy and hes talking about crowd size tell us what the reaction has been. Reporter it has gotten a strong reaction. Former cia director john brennan blasting President Trump over the weekend calling it totally inappropriate. The white house pushing back he had a message for all of the intelligence officials at the cia. Did you hear him say i respect you a thousand percent but he also tried to put the fact that there was some type of tension between him and intelligence communities on the media when thats not the case. He did send out a series of tweets that were quite combative, including trying to compare the Intelligence Community to nazi germany and that of course set off fireworks as well. The president trying to mend faces making that his first visit to the cia. Theres a sense he may have made things more complicated for himself. So theres no doubt based on my conversations with white house officials, chris, i can tell you they understand the enormity and significance of this relationship. I expect it is one he will continue to work on. Thanks so both of you as we wait for that press conference. Andy card was president bushs first chief of staff, now occupied by Reince Priebus. Good afternoon. Great to be with you. Thanks for having me on. Any of us who worked at the white house you have those moments with the press secretary whether its when hes behind the podium or youre up in his office and hes trying to give us some spin and youre pushing back. Can you remember when a press secretary went out and said things that were demonstrably false . No i do not. The Gold Standard for White House Press secretary during my experience was Marlin Fitzwater and he was very good at number one, speaking truth to power, but he was also very good at making sure that power spoke the truth, and yes, i think sean kind of had a learning curve experience yesterday, hopefully he learned from that experience, and wont repeat it again. Does he need to come out and say i was wrong . I think he should know hes wrong. Its not a big deal to be upset at what the media is reporting but they should be fact based. You shouldnt put out a fact that is disputable and obviously not accurate. I hope hell recognize donald trump had a huge Television Audience around the country and world paying attention to his inauguration but the audience th was standing in front of him on the day that he took the oath of office wasot as big as Barack Obamas was in 2009, and its an obvious fact. I think he should acknowledge that fact. And look, people dont live or die by crowd size. No, they dont. Do you think that today the credibility of the press office is at stake here and i think by extension, i dont want to sioud hyperbolic, democracy isnt truth a basic tenet of democracy and when they make up their own version of the truth those countries are not democracies. You do sound hyperbolic. You have to give him a little bit of slack, its day one. Hopefully hes learned a valuable lesson and others at the white house acknowledge that valuable lesson. I dont expect it to happen again. Sean has a huge responsibility to eat a little bit of a meal of a crow and thats a hard thing to do. Ive had to eat meals of crow working at the white house many times. Its not easy, but you have to have the courage to do that. You want to be able to speak truth to power, which means question the socalled truth that youre being asked to spread around, and then not repeat something that is obviously not a fact. Do your homework before you speak on behalf of the United States of america to the world, and thats exactly what the press secretary of the United States does or the press secretary to the president. They speak on behalf of the United States to the entire world. You want to make sure your facts are in fact credible facts and they can be backed up by reality. I should at least say i dont want to speak for other people in the press room, a lot of us know sean from the rnc and have respect for him. Im curious to see what hes going to do. I want to play what is now an infamous statement friday Kellyanne Conway to chuck today about alternative facts. Take a listen. Well, i think you know the back and forth where she basically said alternative facts to which chuck responded alternative facts are falsehoods. What do you make of that statement and does it play into concerns that there have been throughout the campaign that donald trump often says things that are demonstrably not true or at the very best contradictory. I assume shes speaking about the crowd watching trump take the oath of office. It was not the record but close to a record of number of people around the world that were watching it. The Television Ratings were high and also a lot of people attending the inauguration that didnt make it onto the mall so didnt make it through the maggetteometers. Im not sure that i would call it an alternative fact, it was just another fact. The fact is the crowd on the mall was not the biggest in history, it was not bigger than president obamas in 2000, and its a fact that the audience outside of the mall was one of the biggest in history. Maybe not the biggest but one of the biggest. Im sure youre glad to be away from it as i think your old boss is as well. When you have a situation where you want to get off to a running start where you want to take advantage of being the new kid on the block, do you think that, by talking about these things, both sending sean spicer out there to be behind the podium but addressing it in front of a Memorial Wall in front of the cia that Reince Priebus needs to get control of the narrative. What are the one or two issues we need to push forward on and how do we message that . It takes a team to support the president. Reince priebus is leading that team and its his job to make sure that the president gets wise counsel, gets varied counsel to the extent possible is a process by which all of the discussions and all of the deliberations and all of the words that are going to be used by a president are actually anticipated and understood. You dont want unintended consequences to define the outcome of the day. You would like to minimize the number of unintended consequences to anything the president says and how people react to it. I think you need to have a strong process in place and thats the chief of staffs responsibility. Theyre going to get there. I think reince is a very good person, a very good manager, i do think he understands the nature of the responsibility and there are a lot of good people at the white house. I think this is still a steep learning curve. This is the first president who really never served in a washington fish bowl and had to deal with responsibility not just of leading but of governing. I think there will be a little bit of a learning curve and thats okay. Just dont make the mistakes on anything thats really big. I dont think the remarks at the cia were as well constructed as they should have been, given the setting. Youre standing in front of the stars that represent the ultimate sacrifice for this country, and we dont know their names, and so that was a solemn place, and the remarks did not seem to fit the backdrop at that particular moment. Andy card, always good to hear from you. Thank you so much, appreciate it. Thank you. We also want to head here, theres a lot of action on capitol hill, most of the president s nominees have had hearings, are still awaiting a confirmation vote. Nbcs kasie hunt joins me now. Lets get up to date on the votes, two confirmations so far, but more expected today and this week. What are we going to expect, and is it unusual to have had only two confirmations at this point in the process . Reporter chris, good afternoon. Were hanging outside of marco Rubios Senate office, because of course the news today coming that he would vote to approve Rex Tillersons nomination for secretary of state, that was a big question after that dramatic back and forth they had over russia at tillersons confirmation hearing but over the weekend, senators mccain and graham said theyll support tillerson on the senate floor and that helped push rubio into this decision, although he says he still does have reservations. So the Committee Vote for tillerson will take place today. re still waiting on scheduling for the final senate floor vote. We are going to see a vote on mike pompeo today. We expect to see one later today for cia director. There was a holdup, democrats were pushing back against that, mostly senator ron widen from oregon, who is somebody that is focused very intensely on intelligence issues over the years, and wanted a little bit more debate on pompeos nomination. The number of nominees that donald trump has confirmed on the day of his inauguration, two, its lower than it was for president obama. He had six nominees confirmed, he had one holdover from the previous administration, rob gates so Seven Members in place. Remember democrats controled the house and the senate at that time. Now of course but its not unprecedented to have this many nominees in president s past been in this situation before. Kasie, thanks so much. Well come back to you if you get anything with senator rubio. As we reported, President Trump is signing an executive order today to remove the u. S. From the tpp trade agreement. Were asking in todays microsoft pulse question do you think President Trumps executive orders today are good for the American Worker . Wed like to hear from you, let us know what you think at pulse.
