MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Craig Melvin May 14, 2018

Here, not too far away from where i am, chris, the Palestinian Authority president , Mahmoud Abbas was just speaking condemning obviously the violence thats happened today saying that he is calling for three days of natural mourning among the palestinians and calling for a major nationwide strike to take place tomorrow across the west bank and the gaza strip. We know we are still half way through these three days of what are expected to be very tense and violent days including tomorrow. Contrast that to what you saw today where you are in jerusalem. Reporter today it was actually very peaceful day here in jerusalem. A very festive atmosphere. No doubt israel has bent over backwards to put forward a very celebratory face to the american delegation that was here celebrating this as they see it as a historic event but there were protests outside of the american embassy. The new american embassy, not large in numbers, significant in the sense they were members of the jewish diaspora. Part of a coalition of jewish organizations who oppose israels occupation of the palestinian territory. So they were here at least to send a symbolic message that what is happening at the new embassy is not something condoned, supported by jews around the world. And, matt, today marks the bloodiest single day of this campaign of demonstrations thats been going on for several weeks now. Any sense of any, i guess, settlement insight, end of this in sight . Reporter chris, not only the bloodiest single day in the almost seven weeks of protests going on being led by this great march of return group, this was the bloodiest single day since 2014 when israelis launched a weeks long bombardment of this small enclave of palestinians. As far as a resolution, eamon mentioned, tomorrow well see more protests. Whats called the nakba day, or catastrophe. Those in the gaza strip, west bank and throughout the work mark the an verse niversary of state of israel. This is the 70th anniversary coming right after the United States decided to open its new embassy in jerusalem. The thereby kind of leapfrogging ahead of negotiations going on for decades. Kind of expecting hamas and other organizations here to try to decide what theyll be doing in terms of calling out protesters for the following day of protests. Given that hamas called out, called all of its people back from the border at 6 00 today, and seemed to bring todays events to a somewhat earlier than expected resolution, we arent entirely sure what to expect tomorrow but know there could be more protests, violence and indeed more death. As we talk about more protests, is it any surprise to people in that part of the world now these protests have spread in this case obviously to turkey . Reporter it really does not come as a surprise. A few months ago in this a few months ago in december, i think when the decision was initially made, people were expecting there to be largescale protests across arab capitals and that certainly didnt materialize. Not on the scale people were expecting. But given what were seeing today, over the past three days, the decision obviously to have the Embassy Opening on a very sensitive time. Just between jerusalem they had a controversial day for palestinians, one they describe as being very provocative and on the nakba day, catastrophe day comes tomorrow, significant commemorating mass exodus of Palestinian Refugees when the state of israel was created and you understand why there is a largescale sent money sympathetic whats happening in gaza. Its not a surprise were seeing the protests that erupted in istanbul. It is a somewhat surprise other arab capitals including cairo havent shown largescale demonstrations but heard from the u. S. Government theyve added dozens of marines to american famplts facilities, e in turk jordan and israel. Gives you a sense the United States government is anticipating largescale protests perhaps a security threat. For now, as we understand it from our own reporting, that the pentagon has deployed additional marines to those embassies. Eamon mohyeldin, matt bradley, well be i know youll be standing by for us, and as information comes in we will go back to you. I want to bring in now, though, martin indyk, former ambassador to israel, currently Vice President of the brookings institution, and White House Correspondent for the Washington Post, staff writer with the atlantic. Ambassador, start with you and your reaction to what youre seeing unfold right now . That splitscreen image you described and viewers are seeing i think tells it all. The conveyed nonpeace between israelis and palestinians if its a zero sum game. Israel irs ais are celebrating palestinians dieing. Thats what we face at the moment. All the happy talk about this somehow advancing the Peace Process is ludicrous. And we famously remember, the president , when he said this wasnt going to be middle east peace middle east peace wasnt going to be as difficult as many thought it was going to be. At the white house, is there anything here thats unexpected . Or is this a case where perhaps the president knew what was coming and decided it was worth the gamble . What are you hearing . Reporter chris, its really a little bit of both of those things. The white house certainly knew that there would be backlash from their decision, first announced, as you remember, back in december, to unilaterally declare jerusalem and israels capital and move the u. S. Embassy there. They did not anticipate the strength of that backlash. The palestinians boycotted all meetings with highlevel officials ever since. You cannot have a Peace Process or any meaningful advance on that front so long as the palestinians not only are not at the negotiating table with israel, but not even talking to the United States. The strength and length of that backlash was really something that the administration underestimated, and certainly todays violence is on an order that the white house was not expecting either. I mean, more than 50 dead. Really, an absolute unleashing of violence and rage in gaza. This is not conducive in any way to the Jared Kushnerled peace effort. And we have yet to really hear very much from the white house about what they would like to see done by israel or by others to address the crisis in gaza. And we have a situation literally simultaneously as we showed those two things on one hand, you have a deadly violence and on the other you see the kushners standing, smiling, steve mnuchin, ambassador, standing and smiling. A pretty stunning split screen, if you will, about the two different ways in which this is viewed. What does this mean for the middle east Peace Process . Is there a middle east Peace Process . Reporter well, right now there isnt. Right now you have a an expressed willingness on the part of israel to come to the table under circumstance circumstances, and you had until december a similar expressed willingness on the palestinians side. We dont really know where that stands now, and you have standing between them donald trump saying he would like to meet, to make the ultimate deal and it really shouldnt be as difficult as it has been for for more than 40 years, since the Israeli Occupation of the west bank and jerusalem, parts of jerusalem. So he really sees it as a real estate transaction, as a way theres a limited amount of land there to two competing claims to the land. Ought to be able to work it out. Hes not necessarily wrong on that. The bounds of a deal as ambassador indyk knows well have been at least, you know, present, visible for many years. But there has not been political will on either side. Israeli or palestinian, to actually make the compromises required to make any kind of a real estate transaction stick, and trump so far hasnt imposed his own will to try to get israel to make some concessions that might bring the palestinians back to the table. For example. Or to make some other guarantee to the palestinians on his own that might break the current impasse. Jared kushner was very open about the politics of all of this today. I want to play just a little bit of what he had to say. As we have seen from the protests of the last month and even today, those provoking violence are part of the problem and not part of the solution. The United States is prepared to support a Peace Agreement in every way that we can. We believe that it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give. So ambassador, President Trump fulfill as Campaign Promise but what are the wider implications here . Well, just to comment on that, hamas is definitely a pro provocateur here, but they could have picked any day to do it and the way theyve done it, they, too, are provoking, and the violence is in part because of whats happening today. So the notion that somehow this is helping, that they are helping to advance the Peace Process by recognizing ready, eready, reality, even though they are recognizing reality is flying in the face of a different reality. The palestinians have left the table, and theres no way in which donald trump and Jared Kushner are going to be able to bring them back, except if they were to acknowledge that the palestinians also aspire to have their capital in east jerusalem. And they have gone out of their way to avoid anything that suggests that the palestinians have anything to hope for in jerusalem. In fact, the president himself has said repeatedly that hes taken jerusalem off the table. Which sends the signal to the palestinians that theres nothing there for them. And that combined with the violence creates an environment where the arabs that Jared Kushner has been cultivating to try to bring them to the table and get them to provide political cover for the palestinians, they dont want to go anywhere near this now. So i think fracture advancing the Peace Process, they have actually set it back. As if all of this wasnt enough. As you know, they invited pastor Robert Jeffress to give the prayer at the ceremony. He is known for his comments against other religions outside of what he considers to be outside of christianity, including mormonism, and had some choice things to say about islam. Prompting mitt romney, obviously a prominent mormon to tweet yesterday, Robert Jeffress says you cant be saved by being a jew and mormonism is heresy from the pit of hell. He said the same about islam. Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States embassy in jerusalem. Look, you cover mitt romney. His response is no surprise, but why would the white house, in the middle of what they already know is controversial, choose someone controversial . Yes, thats a great question. I think that bringing this controversial baptist preacher to the opens of the embassy, given the things he said in particular about jews but other religious denomen arngss as well, illustrates the degree to which this is a political move aimed at pleasing the evangelicals in Donald Trumps base as much as it is a geopolitical move or a Foreign Policy move. I mean, this is something trump explicitly promised he would do and something frankly ive heard from many conservative evangelicals during the campaign and since they would cite at a reason they were willing to vote for a man who frankly has not upheld christian mores standards. Look, i dont like the way hes conducted his personal life but will give us our jumps and other things including moving the embassy to jerusalem. Dont they have to separate that and people can have their own opinions about it, from a person who has said the things that this past hear said . We should also say after mitt romney tweeted saying he was a religious bigot, we called, nbc called the pastor, and i want to play just a little of what he told our von hilliard. Im not a religious bigot. My comments were pulled out of context. So he says that he was taken out of context there. Having said go ahead. Well, i mean, ive looked at the context of the things he said. I think it is a fair defense and ive seen him make this defense in other places, that his particular religious beliefs mean that other religious denominations are less true than his. Why hes an evangelical christian. Thats fine. But its also true he has not only played the role of a preacher, he has elevated himself to be one of the most politically outspoken, and i would sea partisan figures, in evangelical christianity. He is on fox news constantly defending the president. Constantly attacking the president s critics. He is as much a political figure as a religious figure and the things hes said in the past should theyre worth examining when you invite him to a situation like this to play the role hes playing representing the United States at the opening of a u. S. Embassy in jerusalemjerusalem. Thank you so much. First chance for reporters to ask questions since Sarah Sanders dressed down the immediamedia for questioning. Where is the public apology that a white house aide promised to Meghan Mccain . Shes still waiting for kelly sadler to keep her word she would make a Public Statement for her insensitive remarks about senator john mccain. Mccain says she did apologize on the phone. Had i had a conversation with kelly i asked her to publicly apologize. She said would. I have not spoken to her since and i assume it will never come. Heres mccain on the view talking about her family. Talking about my father and my family and i had a very long weekend and i have six brothers and sisters and five nieces and nephews. A really big family and emphasize i have a really big family involved in all this. My take on all this i said everything i had to say friday and to abcs Tara Palmieri on sunday people have to answer for their own conscience. And the white house has had absolutely no apology, but i understand that Sarah Sanders was indeed very angry, but about the leak. Not about what was said. Thats right, chris. Look, it appears white house officials think by framing this as a leak problem, theyre taking some attention away from the crude comment problem. Although by drawing attention to the fact the press shop is apparently leaking like a sieve doesnt reflect too well on the white house either, but there is, i think, one reason why this apology has been slow in coming and may not ever arrive at all. One person whos familiar with the deliberations happening here at the white house says without officials are all too aware of the fact President Trump himself has said things, disparaging about john mccain we can say might be degrees worse than what kelly sadler said. To punish sadler, make her make a public mea culpa could create a problematic internal precedent. Maybe problematic internally but on capitol hill a problem, too, because john mccain is extraordinarily respected for not just the time obviously that he served as a prisoner of war and the fact hes a vietnam war hero of the era, has dedicated 60 years of his life roughly to Public Service . Right. Were hearing from lawmakers reflecting that very fact. A tweet from dan sullivan, republican from alaska still serves in the Marine Corps Reserve unit and you can see the tweet there. The white house official who offed an insult, show respect and apologize. Add to that the Public Comments lindsey graham, r
